eff Saturday has served as a Player Representative for the Indianapolis Colts since 2002 and sits on the NFLPA Executive Committee. He joined the Colts as a free agent in 1999 and has since been a dominant center for the offensive line. The three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion stresses that players need to understand what unity is at a time like this as bargaining negotiations continue.

I didnt necessarily understand how we got our benets or why we had the benets that we did. My teammates knew that I was interested in understanding why we had what we had, what makes our benet plans so good, why it is so important that we have a 401(k) and why we would give up salary for those things. As I began to learn, I wanted to share that with the guys and let them understand why things happen the way they do and what decisions were made to get us where we are now.

The biggest thing to communicate to my teammates is the importance of saving money. I tell guys to put money away and dont make purchases that you may have thought you were going to do, like a bigger house, more cars or all those things that sometimes come along with money and being young. Also, understand where you are in your free agency timeline and when it is the time for you to be able to hit the market. All those things are very important issues that guys need to understand.

I think nding time during the season to talk to teammates is probably the toughest challenge for Player Reps. We have such a busy schedule, working six days out of the week. We all have families; we all have things outside of the game that are important to us. That is probably the toughest thingto get guys together during the season for true dialogue.

Understanding how the lockout can truly affect us as players is important. I think players need to understand what unity is at a time like this. If we stick together and show that we are united, that we are in this together and that we are willing to save money, we show the owners that we understand how important this business is. This is our business as well as theirs. That is the most important thing that I can relate to my players.

I love to hang out with my wife. Thats our day to hang out and to be a couple.
