NID (National Institute of Design) CAREERS and EXAM PATTERN

Product Design (GDPD)

Product Design is concerned primarily with the relationship between products and systems and those who use them. The Product Design program at NID inculcates a user-centered approach and processes. Responsibility and concern towards the social, physical and ecological environment is emphasized in the process of developing innovative ideas. The NID students are placed in: General Motors Design, LG Electronics Ind. Pvt. Ltd., Lifestyle, Renault India Pvt. Ltd. etc.

Furniture & Interior Design

The Furniture and Interior Design program provides an integrated approach to furniture as part of living and work spaces & habitat and challenges and defining the boundaries of such objects in system context. It enables the students to explore the relationship of furniture elements to interior spaces. The inter-relationship of the furniture systems in living and public spaces and lifestyles are explored. The NID students are placed in: HCP Interior Architecture Pvt. Ltd, FUEGO FURNITURE PVT LTD , Total Environment Building Systems Private Limited etc.

Ceramic & Glass Design

The ceramic designer in India must have the capability to work with equal ease at any level of production, including studio pottery. Ceramic designers find rewarding careers in the area of lifestyle products, tableware and sanitary ware industries. There are also ample opportunities to work in the craft and NGO sectors, as well as to become entrepreneurs with independent batch production studios.

Graphic Design

Today, the potential of graphic design covers areas ranging from social communication to corporate communication. The areas covered include typography & type design, photography, illustration, computer graphics & graphic interface design, multimedia & web design, packaging, print design, corporate identity and information systems like signage. The NID students are placed in: Falkon Design Studio, Wrap Art & Design etc.

Animation & Film Design

The core of this program is the learning of the art, craft and business side of the medium. Students are thoroughly grounded in the various techniques of 2D and 3D animation, including the film production process of both, conventional and computer animation. Graduates of this Program have found rewarding careers as creative directors and producers in TV channels and in production houses. The NID students are placed in: Quicksand Design Studio, Star TV Network, Tata Interactive, Western Outdoor Interactive etc.

Film & Video Communication

The primary aim of the Film and Video Communication programme is to train versatile design-informed communicators, fluent in the conception and production of short films, on a range of educational, cultural, social, entertainment and marketing communication needs.. Graduates of this Program have found rewarding careers as creative directors and producers in moving image industry. They include feature films, Television Channels, Production Houses etc. The NID students are placed in: NDS Services Pay TV Technology Pvt Ltd etc.

Exhibition Spatial Design

An exhibition designer is known to conceptualize and give shape to spaces in relation to varied and multiple uses - mega events, business specific trade fairs, sets, thematic interiors, and thematic exhibitions to showcase cultural heritage, or for museums. For retail environments an exhibition designer, by virtue of the multidisciplinary training, can exert effective influence on visual merchandising , enhance identities and convey idioms of lifestyle.

Textile Design

The program commences with the learning of fundamentals of textile design. These include elementary ergonomics, textile fibers, color, composition, and basic textile design for weaving and printing. It also covers dyeing techniques, printing methods, sewing techniques, and construction of fabrics and surface design. students are encouraged to apply their abilities to resolving specific design problems. The NID students are placed in: Madura Garments - Aditya Birla Nuvo, Swadeshi Silks etc.

Graduates Diploma Program in Design (GDPD) in 3 major faculties comprising of 8 disciplines: Industrial Design Product Design, Furniture & Interior Design, Ceramic & Glass Design Communications Design Graphic Design, Animation & Film Design, Film & Video Communication, Exhibition Design Textile, Apparel & Lifestyle Design Textile Design Seat : 100 Eligibility : 10 + 2 pass

ENTRANCE EXAM PATTERN NID UG (DAT) The NID examination is divided into two phases: (i) Phase I Design Aptitude Test (DAT) comprises of questions that check the drawing skills, color sense, creativity, aesthetics sense, composition etc. (ii) Phase II Studio Test / Interview which test the ability of the student to models etc. with the help of material like wire, clay, pop, plastecene, paper, thermocol etc.
