Livelihood cross-sharing and learning workshop for Eastern SB at Kitui (27th Feb to 2nd March 2012) Participants

The cross-sharing workshop attracted world Vision staff from both WASH and Food security project in Eastern sub-branch. This included staff from the following programmes: Mwala, Mutito Andei, Yatta, Tseikuru, Kalawa, Mutomo, and Mutonguni among other invited programmes. The workshop was facilitated by Eastern Sub-branch and National office livelihood teams.

Food Security in WVK- Mrs. Carol Maua How we are implementing food security and alignment to government policies Definition of food security- availability, accessibility and utilization of food to ensure proper nutrition. Involves stability Agri. is backbone of Kenya economy Kenya is a low income food deficit country Food is a basic human right-adequate and safe 80% of Kenya is ASAL WV action o Goal: improve HH food security o Empower community and s/holders o Advocating for good environment/ policies- Food and nutrition security 2011 o Support initiates aimed at reducing effects of climate change and global warming

Why ED is a priority o Sustainability

Sector development programme in WV: ED, education and literacy, WASH, food and agriculture, Health and hygiene. ED strategy: empower community to meet their needs through- access to markets, appropriate technologies, proper training, relevant information and financial services AIM of strategy: sustainability ED target analysis o Most vulnerable need assistance o Vulnerable Middle group (majority)

o Least vulnerable Working with 2 and 3 groups will work well What will we do- set up systems- do economic surveys, putting up models and testing them relevant to the different communities, strengthening the capacity of staff, capacity building of CBOs/FBOs, cooperatives, local partners, vulnerable HHs, to access and implement viable and sustainable ED options. ED sustainability guidelines Proper capacity building of project management committees for ED projects is essential than implementing the project itself.

Quality Programming of projects- WASH (Mr. Kingoo) The water business hasnt been easy- lack of sustainability in implementation and management of water resources

Failure of WASH projects has been attributed to:

WASH project were and are still imposed on community that compromises ownership of community projects. Implementation is done without considering important processes. No consideration for sustainability- source of water and its sustainable period-recharge

o Water is not be considered as an economic good/activity


o

Demonstration of IMPOSSIBLE No adoption

o Poor design and supervision during construction Approach to sustainable WASH project development (implementation and sustainability) o Intense community mobilization a need is identified; acceptable to all o Formation of strong WRUAS and WUAS o Draw the implementation plan- role and responsibilities of each stakeholder o Set boundaries of supply o Validate design data o Determine value for money for the project- target population against benefit o Water is the means and not the end to development- water is an economic good o Set proper tariffs based on cost recovery- to enable rehabilitation and management of the project. o Know how water is changing lives of boys and girls Sustainability of WASH project tied on o Willingness of the people to pay for the service
