At the end of the lesson, students should be able to identify the a. Manipulated variable Learning Outcomes b. Responding variable c. Constant variable Students background knowledge Basic knowledge of science process skills Scientific and thinking skills Controlling and determining variables, Compare and contrast, Making inferences, Making conclusion Scientific attitudes and noble values Being systematic, being cooperative and daring to try (1) Reference Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn Bhd : Hands on Practical Skills Teaching and learning resources (3) Equipment / apparatus Measuring tape, stop watch (5) Materials Airboard Teaching approach Enquiry discovery based learning Lesson Development Phase 1 SET INDUCTION / INTRODUCTION (5 minutes) Content / Concept Arouse students interest and introducing learning objective with a video clip Usain Bolt running 100m Teaching and Learning Process (Teacher action & student activity) a. Teacher arouse students interest about sport Usain Bolt World Champion 100m b. Teacher shows a video clip on the on Usain Bolt running 100m c. Teacher use questioning to gather information on physical condition of the runner immediately after the run. d. Teacher use questioning technique to relate the 1 Remark / note Part a &b Usain Bolt from Jamaica, winner for 100m World Athletic Champion (10.10s) Part c Sweating Heartbeat

physical condition (panting, breathing in and out increases deeply.) to the increase in heartbeat and pulse Pulse rate rate. increases e. Teacher relates heartbeat to pulse rate. Part f f. Teacher show and ask the students to take their Demonstration pulse rate. by teacher Phase 2 DEVELOPMENT A (Exploration) (7 minutes) Designing and planning the experiment to study the effect of different activities on the rate of heartbeat a) Students are numbered 1 to 4. b) Students are divided into four groups based on their number. c) Each group is provided with a stop watch, a measuring tape and a result table. Students are expected to design and conduct an experiment to study the effect of different activities on the rate of heartbeat. (Guide : The activities suggested are different running time and different running distances) a) Students conduct the experiment outside the classroom. b) Teacher use questioning technique to help students to gather information on the concept oxidation of food, release of energy for the activity and heartbeat. c) Students identify the manipulated variable, responding variable and constant variable for the experiment. a) Teacher asks the group leader to put up their results on the board. b) Teacher asks the students to identify the manipulated variable, responding variable and constant variable on the experiment carried out. Compare and contrast

Phase 3 DEVELOPMENT B (Explanation) (23 minutes)

Conducting the experiment. Manipulated variable what is changed Responding variablewhat is observed Constant variablekept constant Presentation and discussion of result.

Control and determine variables Identify variables

Phase 4 DEVELOPMENT C (Application / Elaboration) (15 minutes)

Identify variables

Phase 5 CLOSURE / ASSESSMENT (Evaluation) (10 minutes) REFLECTION

Conclusion

a) Teacher gives students a situation. b) Students are asked to write the manipulated variable, the responding variable and the constant variable on the paper provided for the given situation. Students have to hold up the answers to show to their friends and teacher. c) Teacher makes a conclusion for the topic.

Making inference and conclusion

Before teaching After teaching The lesson will be interesting. Students able to carry out the experiment systematically in their own groups. Students able to identify the manipulated variable, responding variable and constant variable in the experiment.
