Helensburgh Hig
Celebrating 125 Years

PRINCIPAL REPORT

STUDENT LEADERSHIP
Last Thursday 3 May 2012 our school captains attended a
training day at Bulli High School. The leadership
development sessions were led by senior students from
Bulli High School. Our school leaders were challenged to
be active role models in their schools and to identify areas
of the school they would like to see improved. Students
from across the Seacliff Community of Schools attended
the day and reported that they found the activities
challenging and enjoyable.

NEW SPORTS EQUIPMENT
Helensburgh Public School has recently taken delivery of a
large consignment of sporting equipment thanks to the
generosity of the Helensburgh community. The school has
been overwhelmed by the support it has received during
the ColesfBi Lo Sports equipment for dockets promotion
"Sports for Schools." The school has received a large
variety of new sports equipment which will be used right
across the school.

MOTHERS DAY
Next Thursday 10 May 2012 the Parents Auxiliary will be
holding its annual Mothers Day stall at school. Students are
asked to bring their money to school by Tuesday 8 May,
so that selection of a present for mum becomes their focus
for the day.

SCHOOL CALENDAR
Parents are reminded that information about coming
events is posted on the school calendar on the school
website. I encourage parents to check our site regularly.

STUDENT WELFARE
As part of the school's ongoing commitment to student
welfare, students from all grades attended a wonderful anti
-bullying show Stamp Out Bullying". Through the show
students received valuable strategies to combat bullying
and to develop resilience. Teachers will be following up the
show with a series of eight lessons to strengthen the
message and to build a culture that nurtures positive
behaviours.

HISTORY SPOT 'LG<RX.QRZ"
Each week the school will be publishing a special snippet
about the history of our school. This is being done as part
of our 125
th
celebration. I hope people find these both
informative and entertaining. If any members of the
community have any interesting stories about the school I
would encourage them to ring Mrs Bev Clarke 42941332 as
we are gathering a large array of stories, photos, old
uniforms, memorabilia of any type. If you can help please
contact Bev at the school.

Anniversary Year

'LG<RX.QRZ
The enrolment of pupils at Helensburgh Public
School continued to increase until 1890, when a
larger school was needed. There were 130
children enrolled and a further 60 pupils were
expected to be moving into the area. The
estimated cost was 1,000, including out
offices, two weather sheds, water tanks and
furniture.
In 1891, a new school building was completed.
It was a brick construction consisting of four
classrooms with a large open veranda at one
end. An additional classroom was later added
(this is now the 1/2K classroom).
The main entrance in Lukin Street had a large
foyer with a lovely stained glass arch over the
door, which can still be seen today.

Opportunity Class Placements 2013
Parents seeking opportunity class placement for Year 5
entry in 2013 are required to submit an application by 18
May 2012. Generally students are in Year 4 in 2012 when
applying for Year 5 entry in 2013. Parents seeking
opportunity class placement for students in 2013 will be
able to apply for up to two schools of their choice. It is
expected that parents will make appropriate decisions
when choosing a school that is within reasonable travelling
distance. Parents are strongly encouraged to give careful
consideration to the time taken and modes of transport
involved when choosing a school with an opportunity
class. Parents of students currently enrolled in a NSW
public school with access to the internet, a printer and
their own email address (not the student's) should apply
for opportunity class placement online by going to the
NSW Public Schools website. Online applications open on
Monday 30 April 2012. All other applicants must
complete an official printed application form. Application
packages will be available in schools from 7 May 2012.
The number of application packages dispatched will be
reduced this year in response to the high demand for
online applications. Application forms whether submitted
online or lodged with the principal should be received by
the student's current primary school by Friday 18 May
2012.

125th Questionnaire
As part of our 125 celebrations we are collating a
commemorative yearbook that will be available to
purchase in Term 3. We would love to include some of
the memories of people who have attended or worked at
this school in the last 125 years. If you, someone you
know or are related to went to this school at any time in
the past 125 years please complete the questionnaire we
would love to share as many stories as possible in the
yearbook. Also if you have any old photos from excursions
or sporting events or times in the playground at school we
would appreciate if you could bring them into the office so
they can be scanned for possible inclusion in the
commemorative book. Please have any completed
questionnaires or photos into the office as soon as
possible. Anything received after 11 May will be included
in a separate booklet of school memories. Thank you so
much for your help with this, we hope that you will enjoy
the commemorative book when it is finalised.

Stewart House Donation Drive 2012
You could win a $4,000 holiday for your family to the
destination of your choice! Just place a ($2) coin or the
equivalent in the envelope and return it to the school office
to be eligible for the draw. Your donation helps fund the
program that supports the 1,800 public school children
who experience a healthy and much needed break at
Stewart House each year. Please return envelopes to
school no later than Friday 18th May.

Hubbard St Reading
Thank you to the people who have kindly donated their
time to become tutors for our special reading program. I
have almost been able to get all students needing
assistance onto the program. If anyone else is interested in
helping for as little as half an hour a week I would be very
grateful. Please leave your name and number with the
office. Merle McPherson (SLST)

White Elephant Stall
At our fete later in the year one of the favourite stalls will
be running again - The White Elephant stall. I will be again
coordinating the stall. If you have been putting off that
Spring Cleaning this is your chance. I will gratefully accept
any goods in working, clean order (except clothing and
shoes). Great sellers are puzzles/games, toys, bric and
brac, household items, photo frames, really anything that
you think might be a treasure for someone else. You can
start dropping off your donations from this week directly to
Mrs McPherson's room which is located up the southern
end stairs in A block (down from Fun for U). Thank you for
your support.

SCHOOL BANKING

The Commonwealth Bank School Banking program is here!
The School Banking program includes an exciting Rewards Program designed to encourage children to get into a
regular savings habit. Every time your child makes a deposit at school they receive a Dollarmites token. The first token
will be received after the first deposit at school. Once your child has individually saved 10 tokens, they can redeem
them for an exclusive Dollarmites reward item. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. The school
receives $5 when children make their first deposit at school and a commission on every deposit made through the
School Banking program. Taking part in School Banking is easy. If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank
Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every Tuesday,
using their Dollarmites deposit wallet (see below).

!f your child doesn't have a Youthsaver account and you would like them to participate in the School Banking program,
we will have a representative from the Commonwealth Bank available to open accounts on Wednesday, 9 May between
8.30 and 9am. Please download an Application Form from www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking, complete, and bring
to school next Wednesday along with Photo Identification (eg. Drivers Licence or Passport). No identification is required
for your child.
Please Note: If you are unable to attend the account opening at school on 9 May, you can still open an
account at any Commonwealth Bank branch, no forms to fill in! Remember to take identification for you
and your child (eg. Drivers Licence and Birth Certificate). Alternatively, if you are an existing
Commonwealth Bank customer with access to NetBank, you can apply online.

week. If any parents want to visit the book fair it will be
open before school for half an hour on Tuesday and Wednesday
and after school for half an hour on Wednesday. Happy Reading
