Silent Letters Cloze Activity: Read the story below, and choose the spelling word that best fits.
Anne swung her (1)_______________ on her back and headed out the front door of the school. Anne glanced at her watch and began to walk a bit faster. If she didnt hurry she was going to be late for soccer practice. As she rushed around the last corner before her street, Anne almost got hit in the face by the low hanging (2)______________ of a maple tree. That would have hurt! she thought to herself. She grabbed the (3)_______________ of her front door and hurried inside. If she hustled she hopefully wouldnt end up being late. Anne began to (4)_______________ her left ankle. Last week during one of their games she had twisted it the wrong way, and it was still a bit sore. After changing into her uniform Anne ran a (5)_____________ quickly through her hair to pull it up into a ponytail. When Anne went into the kitchen to fill a water bottle, she found a (6)_____________ working in the cabinet under the sink with a (7)________________. Anne decided to (8)_______________ down beside him to see what he was fixing. What happened? she asked curiously. Your mother called me after she tried to shred some (9)_________________ in the garbage disposal. It seems to have gotten clogged, so Im trying to fix it. the plumber answered. Do you think it will be hard to fix? Anne wondered. I hope not, Im hoping I can (10)______________ with it a little more and be able to get it out. the plumber replied hopefully. Well, good luck! Anne said as she stood up, grabbed her equipment bag, and headed out to practice. At the soccer field the rest of Annes teammates had already put their gear down in a pile and started running their first lap around the field. Anne added her equipment bag that had a purple (11)___________________ on it to the pile right next to her best friend Maddys bag that had two creepy pictures of a (12)___________________, and a (13)_____________________ on it. Maddy loved all things creepy. Books, movies, you name it, if it was spooky then Maddy enjoyed it. Anne caught up with the rest of her team and finished running laps with them. They met back up with their coach at the center of the field. The first drill they were practicing was one of Annes favorites. They had to run the ball down the field, weaving in between cones, and finally around a two foot tall cement (14)______________________ before returning back the way they had come to the starting point. Anne had a (15)____________________ look on her face as guided her soccer ball in between the cones. She finished with a smile, pleased that she hadnt hit a single one of them. She looked up to see her mother smile and wave at her from where she was sitting in the bleachers. Her mom loved to come to every practice. Not only was she able to watch Anne practice, it gave her time to relax and work on her (16)____________________. Each (17)______________________ when

it began to get cooler, Annes mother would knit everyone in their family a new sweater. Her sweaters were always so much more comfy that the ones that you could buy from the store. Anne loved being able to pick out the colors and design that she wanted. It was neat seeing the different steps in making them, and they kept Anne warm and toasty during chilly practices. Today during practice Anne was playing the position of goalie. It wasnt her usual position, but their regular goalie had blocked a ball the wrong way and had gotten her (18)___________________ jammed. She had to keep it in a splint for a week, so Anne was filling in her for in the mean time. Anne was hoping that it wouldnt take any longer than that to heal, because she was afraid she would (19)_____________________ her team to a loss. She wasnt feeling very confident in her skills as a goalie. Her coach had faith in her, and Anne put her best effort into the practice. She was actually feeling pretty good when they finished up, she hadnt done too badly after all. One their way home from practice, Annes mother stopped at the local craft store. They were having a big sale, and she wanted to pick up a new fall (20)____________________ to hang on their front door. Her mother really enjoyed decorating. When they pulled into the driveway at home Anne saw her father shaking hands with the plumber, who was on his way out of the house. The disposals all set maam, I was able to get all of that rhubarb out, and it is working just fine now, the plumber said as he climbed into his van. Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. Annes mother responded. What do you say we go get supper going? her mother asked her. Sure thing! Anne ran inside ahead of her mother, just realizing how hungry she was.
