Letter Essay Due Date: Friday, March 1 (no later than 3:45 pm) Essay Prompt: For the past three months, while reading The Scarlet Letter, we have taken a close look at how the Puritan society within the novel has brashly labeled the characters. For this essay, please answer the following questions regarding these brash labels: Choose a character from the book and analyze (with sufficient textual evidence) the following questions: 1. What brash label did the Puritan society within the novel place on this character? 2. How did this character EITHER defy or go with this label? Please remember, that you must provide sufficient textual evidence to support your thesis. Other Requirements: -Length: This essay should be approximately 750 words (3 pages) in length -Formatting: Times New Roman, 12-point font. Please also double space. -Style: Please submit he paper using proper APA citation style Suggestions: -Between now and next week, please think of what character you may want to use for this essay. Next week in class, we will have a visual drawing activity and this will require you to chose a character ad find a quote that shows a brash label or generalization placed upon him or her. Then, we will use art supplies to visually represent the quote. This will be a good start for your essay, as it can help give the basis for your argument. -Once you have the character and quote showing the label, look at the specific actions that the character performs throughout the book. Outline these and decide if these actions are either going with or against the label. Remember to please think of these specific actions in terms of the impact within the Puritan Society. -By doing these two things, and providing sufficient textual evidence, you should have a good basis for this essay.
