Why north pole of a compass always points north pole of earth and south pole of compass points south

pole of earth ? The Earth itself acted like it had a big magnet inside. The North magnetic pole acts like it is the south pole of a magnet.

Why earth behaves like a magnet? Earth's core contains molten iron and nickel. A current is produced in the core which produces the magnetic field. Can we isolate North Pole or South Pole? No, because if we could break a magnet into microscopic parts, we would come across small regions within it that behave as tiny bar magnets with poles. These magnetized regions are called domains. Explain the statement repulsion is a sure test of magnetism. Both poles of a magnet will attract a magnetic material, only a magnet will be repelled by another magnet when their like poles face each other. So, only repulsion (and not attraction) by another magnet is a sure test of a magnet. Making a Magnet: Steel can be magnetized strongly by stroking it with one end of a magnet 30 to 40 times in one direction only.

Explaining magnetism with Domain theory A magnetic domain inside a magnet is region in which the molecular magnets are grouped together and aligned. In an unmagnetized object, all the magnetic domains are pointing in different directions. Magnetic domains that are oriented in opposite directions cancel one another out, so the material

does not produce a net magnetic field. But, when the metal became magnetized, all like magnetic poles lined up and pointed in the same direction

In an unmagnetized ferromagnetic material, domains point in random directions.

In a magnet, most or all of the domains point in same directions.

Loss and reduction of magnetization: A magnet loses its magnetism if it is hammered if it is dropped from great height when it is heated Uses of magnetism: Some common uses of magnet and magnetic materials are: In motors, generators and loudspeakers. In maglev trains. To store information in the magnetic material found on the computer hard disks, floppies, audio tapes, video tapes and in magnetic stripes found on credit cards, ATM cards. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) What is lodestone? What mineral does it contain? It is a rock that is a natural magnet. It contains the mineral magnetite. How is the Earth's magnetic field produced? It is produced by currents in the molten iron-nickel core of the Earth. Which metal is most strongly attracted to a magnet? Iron Name two other metals that are attracted to magnets. Nickel, Cobalt How can you show that a magnetic field exists around a magnet? Use a compass, or iron filings Draw the field lines around the magnet below. Show the direction of the field.

7)

Draw the field lines between the two magnets, when opposite poles are kept close to each other.

8)

Draw the field lines between the two magnets, when same poles are kept close to each other

9)

Where is the field strongest for a magnet? The strength of the field is strongest where the lines are close together, which is near the ends of a magnet.

10) Why can field lines never cross? Lines can't cross as this would mean a compass would point in two directions which is not possible. 11) State the Law of Attraction and Repulsion for magnets. Unlike poles of magnets attract other and like poles repel. 12) Draw the field lines for the Earth. Give the direction.
