After completing my Master of Science degree in Biotechnology from Pondichery Central University, India and Doctorate degree (Ph.D) in the subject of Biotechnology with specializations in Protein Chemistry and Bio/Nanotechnology from National Chemical Laboratory, India. I joined Prof. Jay L. Nadeaus group to pursue my further research as a postdoc, at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, McGill University, Montreal, Canada in collaboration with Prof. Yves-Alain Peter, Ecole Polytechnique. Owning to my versatile exposure, I am interested in the area of Nano-Biotechnology, Nano-Cancer, protein and carbohydrate chemistry, Microfluidics, Photonic Crystals, MEMS, structural and functional aspects of proteins, biocongugation of nanoparticles and molecular biology. I would like to be a part of a Group/Industry engaged in the synthesis of Quantum Dots (Bio as well as chemical methods), understanding the role of proteins in nanoparticles biosynthesis, protein characterization, nanoparticle production, characterization, conjugation of nanoparticles to various biologically significant molecules and application of nanoparticles in various biorelated and well as engineering applications at nano level in a multidisciplinary environment.

Nanotechnology, Nano-Biotechnology, Nano-Cancer, Protein biochemistry, Physical biochemistry, Microbiology, Glycobiology, Molecular Biology, Micro Electro Mechanical Systems. Professional Experience and Work Summary Presently working as a Post-Doc from June 1st 2007, with Prof. Jay Nadeau at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, McGill University, Canada in collaboration with Prof. Yves-Alain Peter, Micro and Nano Systems Laboratory, Ecole Polytechnique on the project entitled Enhanced optical multianalyte detection lab on chip for point-of-care diagnostics the final goal of the project is to make nano-chip for the easy detection of pathogens, replacing the radioactive compounds. My specific objectives for the project are to synthesize quantum dots using a novel biological system using fungus as well as chemical methods (So far made, Biological methods: Gold, Silver, CdS, CdSe and Organometallic Synthesis: CdSe, CdTe, CdSe-ZnS core shell), characterize them using XRD, TEM, AFM, XPS, used them to conjugate to different antibodies for the detection of pathogens. Simultaneously I have been working on the other project that involve, functionalization of quantum dots to various molecules (Dopamine, Doxorubicin) and use them to specifically target the mammalian (Cancerous) and bacterial cells; that lead to phototoxicity due to generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). And also we use QDs to distinguish bacteria for example, I have conjugated the QDs to WGA (wheat germ agglutinin) for labeling of Bacteria. The WGA conjugates were used to label a mixed bacterial culture-containing Gram

S. Anil Kumars CV negative (E. coli) and Gram positive (B. subtilis) cells. It was hoped that the WGA would increase the fluorescence of the particles, since previous work in our group has found enhancement of bare-core CdSe by WGA conjugation. Worked as Research Fellow from Dec 2001 to March 2007 under the guidance of Dr. M. I. Khan, Scientist, Division of Biochemical Sciences, National Chemical Laboratory, India on the Topic entitled Biosynthesis of sulfide nanoparticles by Fusarium oxysporum, purification and characterization of enzymes and proteins responsible for the extracellular synthesis. During which I have gained experience in field of protein biochemistry and nanotechology. I have biosynthesized CdSe quantum dots extracellularly using the fungus Fusarium oxysporum, I have purified and well characterized the enzymes sulphite and nitrate reductases and capping peptide involved in the extracellular synthesis of nanoparticles. In vitro synthesis of different metal nanoparticles such as gold, silver and technologically important semiconductor nanoparticles such as CdS and CdSe nanoparticles was carried out just by using the purified enzymes and capping peptide which is a first report of its kind, the nanoparticles being characterized by UV-Vis Spectroscopy, Fluorescence spectroscopy, Time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Conjugation of the in vitro synthesized CdS quantum dots to lectins (glycoproteins) for diagnostic applications was also performed. During my post graduation I have carried out a dissertation on a project entitled Characterization of the extracellular polysaccharides produced by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae strains, the bacterial blight pathogen of rice during which I have purified the exopolysaccharides produced by different strains of bacteria Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae that show varying degree of virulence among rice cultivars. I have characterized the polysaccharides by FTIR and Proton NMR and also identified the specific sugars composition by HPAEC so as to compare the exopolysaccharides composition that plays a role in the interaction with host. After my post graduation I also gained a five months of experience in Molecular Biology, carried out under the guidance of Dr. Yogesh Souche, NCCS, India during which I

S. Anil Kumars CV worked on a topic entitled Phylogeny of snakes in and around pune based on their 16 s rRNA". The objectives were to isolate DNA from different snake samples 40 (muscle), collected from different parts of Maharastra (India). Amplify the DNA by carrying out PCR (Polymerase chain reaction) using different 16 s rRNA primers (7 primers were used). Check for the PCR product, purify the PCR product, do DNA sequencing, and then phylogenetically align them using Bio-informatics programmers (BLASTA, FASTA) for easy classification and identification of Snakes. Technical Expertise Microbiology and Parasitology: Besides routine diagnostic laboratory work, Isolation, Identification, Culture and maintenance of bacteria and fungi. Molecular Biology and Biotechnology: DNA and RNA purification, Agarose gel electrophoresis, DNA cloning, PCR, DNA sequencing. Protein Chemistry and Biophysics: Standard protein purification techniques (All chromatographic techniques, HPLC, FPLC), 1-D and 2-D Electrophoresis and Blotting techniques, Rotofor Iso-electric focusing, co-immunoprecipitation as well as biophysical techniques including UV-Vis Spectroscopy, Fluorimetry, Time resolved spectrofluorimeter. Material Chemistry: X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Atomic force microscopy (AFM) for nanoparticle characterization. Cell Culture: Cell culture (mammalian cell lines), cell toxicity assays. Instrumental Expertise XRD, TEM, SEM, FTIR Times resolved fluorescence spectrophotometer Microscopes, Confocal Microscopy Centrifuge, Ultra-Centrifuge PCR HPLC Spectrofluorimeter Electrophoresis and Blotting systems Lyophilizer DNA Sequencer FPLC Spectropolarimeter 2D Electrophoresis Fermentor Rotofor isoelectric focusing
