With an impressive stand and 42 models in its line-up, the Ingolstadt brand was careful enough to ensure that its top models and the next-smallest car didnt get lost in the traffic. The 2013 A3 made its unofficial appearance a couple of weeks ago before Geneva and in flesh the story is quite interesting. The overall dimensions are just about the same, but the wheelbase and interior dimensions have grown. The car has shed 80kg and 122 hp 1.4-litre engine will be one of three offered at launch, along with a 180-hp 1.8-liter TFSI and a 2.0-liter TDI -- all driven through the front wheels. Shifting will come in either fivespeed manual or six-speed S-tronic forms. Quattro versions come later and are reserved for more powerful engines.

he CX-5 is the first vehicle of a new Mazda generation that will adopt the full range of Mazdas breakthrough engineering and new design theme. Two of Mazdas concept cars -- Shinari and Minagi have influenced the design theme of the CX-5. The Minagi concept car was unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and the CX-5 becomes the first production model to feature Mazdas new design theme, KODO - Soul of Motion. The CX-5 is the first total vehicle application of a new engineering approach Mazda calls Skyactiv Technology. Mazda is promoting Skyactiv as a total design integration of engine, transmissions, and body shell, but the critical element is the new 2.0-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv engine. Designed for maximum efficiency, the new engine is light, with a number of friction-reducing measures, a new exhaust manifold design, an exceptionally high compression ratio (13:1), and runs on regular unleaded fuel. The engine has already propelled the Mazda 3 compact into the 40 mpg club. Although the CX-5 is a heavier vehicle, the SkyActiv combination of engine, compact transmission designs, and low vehicle weight should help the new crossover achieve stellar fuel economy. Safety features on all models include advanced dual front airbags, front-seat side-impact airbags, side air curtains front and rear with rollover protection, anti-lock brakes (ABS), DSC electronic stability control with traction control, and Hill Launch Assist. The CX-5 comes with three-point safety belts for all five positions, with pretensioners and force limiters on front seats. A blindspot monitoring system comes on Touring and Grand Touring models that can help alert the driver to vehicles alongside. Optional all-wheel drive can improve handling stability in slippery conditions. In terms of market positioning, for a while the CX-5 will overlap with the CX-7, but it will ultimately replace it when the CX-7 is retired. The CX-5 will also offer a choice between front- or all-wheel drive. Interestingly, despite the similar nomenclature, there is nothing common between the two models.

Simple logic: why settle for just having the worlds fastest coupe when you can have the worlds fastest convertible, too? As expected, Bugatti touts the Grand Sport Vitesse as the most powerful production roadster of all time. The Veyron Super Sport with a top tested speed of 428.9km/h holds the record for the worlds fastest production coupe. Is that enough? Not according to speed freak Bugatti, as it used the neutral venue to debut its next chapter of its top speed story. Take the 1,200hp, 8.0-litre, quad-turbocharged W16 from the Veyron Super Sport and fit it under the hood of the roofless Grand Sport and you get a package called Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse.

The arrival of the new V8 Continental models in the region this month fulfils Bentleys environmental commitment to produce a new powertrain that delivers a 40 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions

While the styling certainly isnt for everyone, theres no denying the performance on tap. Well now wait and see what Ferrari has in mind for the Enzo replacement. The F12 Berlinetta was the talking point at Geneva. As the replacement for its V12-powered 599, the cars 6.3-litre V12 is the most powerful from Ferrari ever. Spinning out 740hp and accelerating from zero to 62 mph in a reported 3.1 seconds with the help of its 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission. Extensive use of aluminum in the space-frame chassis means the F12 weighs an estimated 150 pounds less than the 599, and performance is improved thanks to a lower center of gravity, less drag and greater down force.

This years Geneva Motor Show served up a scintillating array of vehicles besides the usual wild and wacky themes. Heres Automans take on the good, the bad and the ugly

Its one thing to create a convertible version of the Aventador LP700-4 and an another to take off the roof, windscreen, and some basic amenities like climate control or satnav or infotainment. Lamborghini described the J Roadster an utterly indescribable experience of power and dynamics. The car uses the same 700hp, 6.5-litre V12 of the hardtop and Lamborghini states that this open-air model will hit speeds as high as 297km/h with ease. Lamborghini has been experimenting with new materials and has used a new carbon fibre fabric called Carbonskin that is apparently soft and supple enough to be used on the seats and interior trim.

espite the fact that Omans fuels prices is among the lowest in the region, the Sultanates automotive market respects marques that engineers products revolving around efficiency without compromising on performance. This focused attitude hasnt gone unnoticed at Crewe-based Bentley Motors who have decided to have the regional launch of its first new V8-powered Continental GT in Oman this month. To this extent, Bentleys new V8 engine delivers maximum power of 500bhp at 6,000rpm and an extraordinary peak torque of 660Nm

which is available across virtually the entire rev range from 1,700 to 5,000rpm providing exhilarating performance and effortless power delivery in the Bentley tradition. Combined with a new close-ratio 8-speed automatic transmission, this translates into a 0-60 mph sprint time of 4.7 seconds for the CGT (0-100 km/h in 5.0 seconds) and a top speed of 187 mph (301 km/h). At the same time, the new V8 Continental models achieve outstanding levels of fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions for the luxury performance sector and are capable of

travelling over 800km on a single tank of fuel. The new V8 engine features variable displacement with a highly sophisticated engine management system, ensuring a seamless and imperceptible transition from V8 to V4 mode under light throttle load. The V8 also uses high pressure direct injection, low friction bearings, thermal management, energy recuperation via the charging system, and innovative turbo charger packaging for greater efficiency. The instantly recognisable growl of the new 4.0 litre V8 engine sets it apart from its Bentley stablemates.

Expressing their potent, muscular character, both new Continental V8 models are distinguished by a black gloss matrix grille with chrome frame and centre bar, a red enamel Bentley B badge, and a black matrix three-segment lower front bumper divided by distinctive body-coloured strakes. At the rear, unique chromed figure eight exhaust tailpipes, a dark lower valance and red enamel B bootlid badge emphasise the sporty, contemporary identity of the new V8s. The new Continental V8 models can be specified with 20in alloy wheels as standard or an optional 21-inch sixspoke design which is available in dramatic

Diamond Black (exclusive to the Continental V8) or Diamond Silver finishes. The new-generation Continental GT, introduced in 2011, builds on this success. The latest body construction techniques, including aluminium Super-Formed front wings provide the feel of a truly coachbuilt coupe, while the familiar power lines and rear haunches now have sharper radii enhancing the highly distinctive, sculptured appearance of the Bentley coupe. With the recent introduction of a new, highefficiency 4.0-litre V8 engine (with 8-speed transmission) sitting just below the 6.0-

litre W12, Bentley is widening the appeal of the latest generation of Continental GT and GTC, while retaining the power, drama and performance one associates with the Bentley Continental. Automan has presented the 2011 Bentley Continental GT with the COTY for the Luxury Car segment in its W12 configuration and the newly configured engine ias all set to test the cars ability to hang on to the award for a second year in a row. The Automan team will be testing the car at the Oman launch and we will let you know our feedback in the next issue.

uilt to fill in the position being vacated by the Ford Escort, the Focus has, in two generations covering around fourteen years become a world leader in terms of a c-segment contender. But one point cant be ignored - you dont take a best-selling model and keep flogging it for years on end without losing some of the hardcore following that built its success in the first place. To be fair, a lot has happened to the car industry and to Ford itself through the time. The Focus started out as two completely different cars for the European and North American markets. Its overwhelming success in the European market always meant that the model was paid more attention - but the trend stayed addressing the needs of the two distinct markets with different cars on different platforms. Now some sense seems to have prevailed and the Focus is sold as a global car. The Middle East market gets the third generation Focus almost two years behind the rest of the world. In the meantime the facelift second generation has been gathering fleet buyers and a few die-hard retail buyers. But the third generation is about to change the equation completely. Staying with the shared new platform that has generated the current Mazda3 and the Volvo S40, the car is visually very distinct. You can almost imagine the Ford boffins gathering the essences of the Ford DNA and distilling the very best in the form of the new car. It is visually the most appealing Focus ever right from the large bumper and airdam below the miniaturised grille, to the headlights that have just a touch of the facelifted cars kink on the glass, to a very A-shaped and aggressive dark and light treatment of the airdam to add sportiness. The profile of the car is similarly rakish. Whether you look at the hatchback or the sedan, the hood and front windshield rise assertively to catch the roof that almost immediately starts descending in the 5-door hatch to the rear. The treatment of the area between the C and D-pillars is reminiscent of the first generation, but the taillight assembly sets it way outside the visual direction of that car. Fords new Kinetic design philosophy seems to have found its home here after the Fiesta. The interiors are similarly redesigned. The very European feel of the cabin remains and depending on the trim level you pick up, the combination of cabin plastics and fabrics ranges between mildly bland to really exciting. It really isnt hard to imagine the car kitted out as an RS but more to the point, the Titanium trim, which is not being offered in Oman is a combination of brushed metal, glossy ebonite and soft-feel plastics and leather wraps. The Trend trim level is a few steps behind that.

It is easy to wax eloquent on a car that belongs to a category that is a personal favourite. I have grown up on a staple of the quintessential British sportscar - even witnessing the putative demise of the once iconic breed. The formula was simple enough. A light chassis, preferably with a soft top to allow the driver to romance the countryside in the week long good weather the British Isles enjoys and a small, yet powerful engine. Not for the British the large V8s that spawned a few decades of muscle cars. It was all about elegance. But this drive is not about a British sportscar, let alone one of the Japanese two-litre or thereabouts cars that set another generation and other parts of the world on fire. Cars like the Miata or MX-5 are still all the rage. The Peugeot RCZ has a long line of cars to follow. Oddly enough, in these days and times the RCZ isnt really competing with any specific two-seater. With the advent of the small SUV, hot

We are glad to announce that 2012 began with a bang. After all the usual New Year parties that seemed to be a way of heaving a collective sigh that we have managed to get through another year without either blowing up the world or draining it of all its money, the first few months of 2012 were a welcome change. For the car industry too, 2011 went by with moderate to spectacular results depending on which part of the world you were based in and which segment of the market you addressed. To a large extent 2011 was the year of the alternate markets. With Japanese production in a slump, European consumers worried about whether they would have a job to pay for their cars mortgage and a US economy that seemed like it was falling off, only to claw its way back, the car industry had to look for volumes and quality buyers from as far afield as China, India, most of South-east Asia and Latin America. Of course the US car buyer continues to be the bellwether of the market, irrespective of the importance that the Chinese volume market now has in most companies strategies. In that respect the figures out of Detroit are encouraging especially for all three of the American majors, with GM back to a firm first place, Ford gaining profitability and product range and Chrysler outdoing all expectations in its bounce back from the

brink. 2012 promises a lot more of the same. Take the Middle East market in general. Other than Syria as a flashpoint and the worry of an Iranian crisis over the horizon, most of the region seems to be in a mood for consolidation, investment in local economies and growth. For the oil-producing nations the prognosis is even better, with the barrel of oil likely to remain over 100 dollars through the year, thereby allowing much needed funds towards growing infrastructure, investing in job generation and putting something aside for future needs. The GCC is likely to be a cash cow for most manufacturers this year too. We had seen the way in which all the German luxury manufacturers put in growth, in some cases registering the sort of growth you would expect from new markets. The wealth of some of the GCC countries and their ability to bounce back from the financial doldrums they were in has meant that fresh investment is happening on the ground and the rich are buying top-end cars. At the lower end too the revolution continues with the combined Hyundai-Kia juggernaut trying hard to catch up with the instant of the Japanese majors. These past few months have seen the Japanese brands wake up and return to the good fight the new Camry packs a punch never seen before, the new Sunny takes Nissan back a decade to its heydays and Japan-tsunami and Thai-floods ravaged Honda is swinging back with the all-new CR-V. In the meantime Japanese luxury offerings are also being rushed into the market to catch the spending come out of consumers purses. Geneva too was encouraging with more product launches than expected, some interesting direction being set for the near future and serving as a barometer of the good tidings the industry expects.

Already into its second year of model assessment and testing, Automans year long Car of the Year program has begun on a positive note with the small change to the programs logo that witnesses a pronounced metallic bevel adding a degree of contemporary appeal. As for the program itself - the basic parameters remain the same. Automan will test cars that are sold in the Oman market during 2012. this list could include cars that make a late entry during the second half of the year, but in many cases we will be driving cars that are steady sellers here. Isuzu D-Max proves its supremacy on long roads with advanced diesel engine
distances that need to be covered, often on difficult terrain and where service stations may not be available, hence the need for a pick up that doesnt use a lot of diesel. Unlike other regions, diesel fuel price in many Middle East countries is more than petrol. This is one of the biggest negative factors for us. However, over years, the customers and the market have come to understand that Isuzu D-Max with diesel engine is more durable and more fuel efficient than gasoline engine. This is why we developed the D-Max series, a proven performer that can withstand the Gulfs roads and climate conditions. The D-Max once again confirms that it is the worlds leading diesel pick up, with the latest technology to minimize diesel consumption, offering the driver a smooth ride with full comfort amenities, and all with unmatched reliability. And, today we are all here to witness the fuel efficiency of Isuzu D-Max in this GCC One-Tank challenge. The Isuzu D-Max is powered by a 2.5-litre twinturbo common rail diesel engine that produces 163PS and 400Nm at 1,400 rpm. The engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic. Its new shift-on-the-fly system lets the driver go from 2WD to 4WD at speeds up to 97 km/h. Several specifications are available including single and double cab architecture, an advanced safety package with features including electronic stability control, traction control, ABS, brake assist and a number of airbags.

In a one-of-a-kind demonstration of capabilities in the region, Isuzu put its Thailand-built 2012 D-Max pick-up truck to the ultimate performance test at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) last month after the vehicle successfully completing the GCC One Tank Challenge -- a gruelling 1,100 km drive through five GCC countries: Oman, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain on a single tank of diesel. The D-max One Tank Challenge kickedoff from Al Buraimi in Oman from the showroom of the local dealer Oman Trading Establishment L.L.C. At the showroom, an Isuzu representative used non-removable hologram stickers to seal the fuel tank after it was filled to ensure that no extra fuel could be added during the drive. The fuel tank capacity

is 76-litres. The pick-up began its non-stop journey from Oman to UAE, then into Saudi Arabia, made a detour to Qatar, back again to Saudi Arabia and finally concluded the journey at the Bahrain International Circuit, driving the distance without a refuel. This translates to an economy rate of 14.473km/litre in mixed urban and highway driving conditions. At the arrival point, over 45 media representatives from all of the GCC were present to verify that the original seal was untouched. Toshiaki Maekawa San, co-managing director of Isuzu Motors International Operations (Thailand) Co., Ltd. said: The Isuzu D-Max success stems from our concern to answer the particular needs of the GCC market. One of the most important aspects are the vast

The paintwork is contrasted by a full chrome pack including door mirrors, rear bumper protector and the 60th Diamond Edition logos. The interior lives up to the high expectations with specially embroidered leather front seats bearing the Patrol logo and one-off floor mats. The 60th Diamond Editions features add to the already substantial equipment levels of the base models on which it can be ordered. The SE trim option comes with 317bhp 5.6-litre V8 engine, offers satellite navigation, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, 8in LCD display in the front and DVD system for rear passengers. The flagship LE trim gets some power enhancements with 400bhp on tap from the 5.6-litre V8 and 7-speed automatic transmission. Advanced safety features include Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, Intelligent Cruise Control with Distance Control Assist and Brake Assist. Automans take Nissans investment in the development of the current Patrol has been a case study for many competitors. Gathering inputs from all markets where the vehicle is sold, engineers first tuned and tested 200 prototypes at the companys Motegi, Oppama and Tochigi proving grounds in Japan before sending them to the Middle East where they were exposed to every imaginable challenge; desert, rocky surfaces, highways and inner-city traffic. A further battery of tests was then carried out by Nissan engineers between early 2008 to the end of 2009, in the tough terrain areas close to the UAE and Saudi border. In fact more than 40 Japanese engineers completed a total of 13,265 hours of testing in the region to assess the vehicles performance and durability. Featuring unique and unprecedented specification, never previously seen, the 60th Diamond Edition should be able to represent the ultimate expression of this popular SUV.

Lotus has arrived in Lebanon with RYMCO and Zardman. Launched as Lotus Cars Lebanon, the new operation was introduced to the market on March 26 2012 with Lotus F1 Team driver and former World Champion Kimi Raikkonen, Group Lotus CEO Dany Bahar and CEO Lotus Cars Middle East Montaser AlKuzbari, in attendance. Lotus Cars Middle East (LCME), the official Lotus distributor based in the UAE is proud of launching Lotus Cars Lebanon as part of their mission to develop

the Middle East and North African market. Group Lotus, headed by CEO Dany Bahar, continues to reinvigorate Lotus with highly anticipated future range of vehicles supported by continued developments to the current Elise, Exige and Evora platforms The new Exige S model is in high demand, and the newly released Evora GTE road car is already receiving a very high number of orders. Lotus is scheduled to take the year ahead by storm, said Bahar.

Previous Ford Focus models were lauded for safety, driving dynamics and style, winning numerous accolades and the 2012 Focus aims to repeat these successes by surpassing the benchmark set by its previous generations using a host of sophisticated and classexclusive technologies developed by Ford. The new Focus technologies will be the centre of attention Fords recently launched inter-GCC Focus Rabaa Rally campaign. The new Ford Focus features class-exclusive cutting-edge innovations creating a remarkable car, said Paul Anderson, Ford Middle Easts Marketing director. Drivers of the all-new Ford Focus will benefit from a more enjoyable ownership and driving experience thanks to the latest technologies that the new model boasts.

Lotus has put a halt to all development of future models. The news comes after the Malaysian government sold its controlling stake in Lotus parent company Proton. According to EVO, the companys takeover regulations require all involved parties to enter into a lockdown wherein anything outside of normal business is brought to a halt. For Lotus, that means stalling development for 60 days and pushing back launch dates for vehicles like the Exige S, Evora GTE and the upcoming Esprit successor. Lotus CEO Dany Bahar is currently engaged in talks with DRB-Hicom, Protons new owner, in an attempt to ensure the industrial conglomerate holds onto the sports car maker.

aLL-new Lexus gs Launched in oman

As part of the Oman Japan Friendship Association initiative, an art exhibition by Morita Rieko, a renowned Japanese artist known for remarkable interpretation of Kyotos traditional culture, in Muscat recently formed the backdrop of an equally inspired and artistic launch of the all-new 2012 Lexus GS. The event was attended by high profile VIPs led by HH Sayyid Haitham bin Tareq al Said, minister of heritage and culture and honorary chairman who also inaugurated the art exhibition. Very much like the Morita Riekos amazing works of art, Lexus says the Japanese artistic elegance is perfectly embodied in the current design philosophy centred round the L-finesse concept with the GS being one of the beneficiaries of this new design application. In the region, the new GS will be available in three engine sizes. GS250 is powered by 2.5-litre V6 engine delivering 207hp whereas the GS350 comes with an improved carryover 3.5-litre V6 engine which now delivers 312hp. The GS450h - the hybrid model is due to be launched in a few months. The cars chassis is new and it has been made stiffer. The incoming model is also larger than its predecessor although the wheelbase remains unchanged at 112.2in and the overall length is still 190.9in. The front overhang is shorter by 0.4in and the rear overhang has grown by the same amount. The car is also 1.2in taller, which has increased headroom front and rear.

For a few days in the middle of March, MINI drew visitors and enthusiasts alike with an elaborate display of outdoor paraphernalia like Parasails, go-karts and some lifestyle cues like comic book displays to communicate the quirky, action image of MINI. The reason was the local launch of the MINI Roadster and Coupe. Commenting on the event, Rachid Zamani, General Manager of Al Jenaibi International Automobiles said, We wanted to give our two newest models an unconventional welcome to Oman and create something completely different for MINI enthusiasts. We took an interactive approach and focused on creativity and fun, two things that are fundamental to the MINI brand. The sixth model addition to the range is the MINI Roadster, the first open-top two-seater MINI. The compact Roadster marks a new chapter in the history of the MINI brand and embodies sportiness and open-air driving fun under the open sky. Emerging markets spurning new brand considerations

Ghosn confirms Datsun revival as a low cost brand
Automan was among the first to break the news about a possible comeback of the Datsun badge a few weeks ago. Now, Renault-Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn has confirmed that the Datsun name was being revived as a budget car brand in certain territories. Ghosn made the announcement during an address in Indonesia, and the south-east Asian nation will be one of the first to receive Datsun products, along with Russia and India. All three markets will get cars in 2014. For the Indian market, two hatchbacks are planned. The first model [internal code: K2] will be mechanically based on the two-generation old K11 Nissan Micra and will come with a 1-litre petrol engine. A cheaper model [internal code: I2] is also being developed to compete with the Indias top-selling entry level model, the Maruti Suzuki Alto. The I2 which is being developed by Ashok Leyland is likely to be shared with Renault as well. Ghosns policy of rehashing older platforms could help lower the price resistance in the Indian market. Intensive market research in emerging markets particularly Asia are suggesting that theres a challenge and opportunity to tap a price conscious segment estimated between 5,000- 7,000. Ulrich Hackenberg, head of research and development of VW told German magazine Auto Motor und Sport in comments published last month. The automaker has developed expertise in low-cost vehicles and will offer products tailored to individual markets. In India we build the Vento and a local version of the Polo that only costs around 7,000. In China were planning a more affordably priced car in the size of a Seat Toledo, said Hackenberg. There is a market segment between 5,000 and 7,000 euros, which is a real challenge and the trick is finding the right amount of content to take out of the car to make it affordable, he added. Hackenberg said no decision had been made whether such a car, most likely a roomy sedan that could also be built in a van body style, would be manufactured with a Chinese partner.

Service matters
Vehicle owners who visit dealer facilities for service are considerably more satisfied with their experience at dealerships than with service from independent facilities, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2012 Customer Service Index (CSI) Study in US
Among customers of dealer facilities, overall satisfaction with the service experience averages 38 points higher on a 1,000-point scale, compared with non-dealer facilities (787 vs. 749, respectively). In addition, 79 percent of all service visits among owners of one- to- three-year-old vehicles are performed at dealer facilities -- up from 74 percent in 2011 and 72 percent in 2010. Overall satisfaction with dealer service improves by 19 points in 2012, compared with 2011, with gains in all five study measures. Among the 33 rankeligible brands, 28 improve in service satisfaction from 2011, with eight brands improving by at least 20 points. Contributing to the overall improvement is a shift in the proportion of maintenance and repair work performed at dealer service centers. In 2012, 72 percent of vehicle owners indicate their latest dealer service visit was for maintenance rather than repair, an increase from 63 percent in 2011. Customer satisfaction with maintenance visits is typically higher than satisfaction with repair visits, since visits for routine maintenance tend to be less expensive and less time-consuming. The study examines satisfaction among vehicle owners who visit a service department for maintenance or repair work. The CSI rankings are based on dealer service performance during the first three years of new-vehicle ownership, which typically represents the majority of the vehicle warranty period. Five measures are examined to service (listed in order of importance): service quality; service initiation; service advisor; service facility; and vehicle pick-up. Lexus ranks highest in customer satisfaction with dealer service among luxury brands and receives an award for a fourth consecutive year. Lexus achieves an overall CSI score of 861 and performs particularly well in three of the five measures: service initiation, service facility and service quality. Rounding out the top five nameplates in the luxury segment are Cadillac (852); Jaguar (849); Acura (838); and Porsche (836). Among luxury brands, Audi achieves the greatest improvement (gaining 34 points) from 2011. Among mass market brands, MINI ranks highest for a second consecutive year with a score of 809. MINI performs particularly well in four of the five measures: service quality, service advisor, service facility and vehicle pick-up. Also among the top five brands in the mass market segment are Buick (805); GMC (803); Chevrolet (801); and Hyundai (791). Of mass market brands, Nissan (which gains 43 points) and Toyota (gains 31 points) achieve the greatest improvements from 2011.

Toyota Australia hopes high for 2016 Camry production

Australia-based car manufacturers are facing critical times. On one hand a rampant Australian dollar that has savaged its exports, and local cost of manufacturing cars has gone up. Despite the adverse situation, at least Toyota seems to be committed in continuing producing cars in this country. Toyota Australia has confirmed that it has a firm intention to build cars at its Australian manufacturing plant in Victoria beyond 2016, when the current Camry is up for replacement. Although the company has not specifically said that it will build the next generation Camry in Oz, Toyota Australia insiders have said that preparations were on going for the next Camry. The commitment from Japans biggest car manufacturer means a much needed lifeline for the plant which would in term remain in business until 2021 at least. However, Toyota Australia president Max Yasuda has also warned that unless Toyotas Oz car-building operations has to be internationally competitive otherwise the local operation could miss out on the investment needed to introduce new models into Altona in future.

Maserati trademarks Levante name for new small saloon

Automans take
After months of labour turmoil at Toyotas Altona plant ranging from industrial action over a new work agreement and management decision to lay off almost 10 per cent of the workforce earlier this year after 2012 production forecasts were slashed from about 120,000 units to 95,000 [mainly due to a drop in exports to the Middle East], theres a ray of hope -- the new AUS$300mn four-cylinder engine plant is now nearing completion at Altona and is seen as one of the keys to future manufacturing by Toyota in Australia. Meanwhile, management and labour unions need to sort out their differences for longterm survival.

Maseratis new product plans are quite ambitious and it also includes looking into untapped market segments where the brand has not been represented. So far, Maserati have presented a SUV idea/concept now it appears that there are plans for a new sports saloon to slot under the larger, next-generation Quattroporte. Internally it is said that the new sport saloon is called Maseratina, but an Italian publication has discovered a recent Maserati trademark for the name Levante. The Levante should be aimed at the midlevel executive saloon market, meaning the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class. Interestingly all the German models come with petrol and diesel powertrains besides some hybrid options. Maserati will either have to up the game in diesels/hybrids or remain slightly handicapped with this model.

The word Levante has several meanings. We think the one probably Maserati would want to emphasis is rising. But its also British slang for leave secretly or hurriedly to avoid paying debts, which is a humorous coincidence in light of recent events in Italy.

Volvo planning US production?

Horbury out, Ingenlath in

breaking news
Volvo sold 449,255 cars globally in 2011, with 67,240 of those sales in the US. By 2020, CEO Stefan Jacoby aims to boost those numbers to 800,000 sales globally and almost double sales in US. Jacoby is aware that such ambitions could be damped given the current exchange rate mismatch between the US dollar and the euro. Perhaps one of the reasons, according to a report in Automotive News, that the company will spend the next two or three years considering building a plant in the US or Mexico. Even on the optimistic end, if Volvo decided to go ahead and build a factory in 2014, it would probably be 2016 at the earliest before the market would benefit from locally produced cars.

Thomas Ingenlath, 48, has been appointed Vice President Design at Volvo Car Corporation, arriving from a position as head of the Volkswagen Design Center in Potsdam, Germany. Ingenlath will assume the position as Vice President Design, Volvo Car Corporation, on July 1, 2012, succeeding Peter Horbury, who is now Senior Vice President Design, Geely Group. Ingenlath has 20 years experience from the automotive industry, after completion of design studies at the Fachhochschule fr Gestaltung in Pforzheim and the Royal College of Art in London. He has since worked in top design positions at Audi (1991-1994), Volkswagen (1995-2000) and Skoda (2000-2006). As from 2006 he has been the Director for Design at the Volkswagen Design Center in Potsdam, designing for all brands of the Volkswagen Group. Li Shufu, Chairman of Geely Holding Group and Volvo Car Corporation, comments: The recruitment of Thomas Ingenlath to head Volvos Design department is another important step in the development of Volvo Car Corporation to become a truly luxury automotive b ra n d . Mixed response to Jaguars new visual identity logo
Four years after Indias Tata Motors took the reins of Jaguar, the brand has been on a mission to reinvent the product portfolio with new and exciting models and also establish itself a top player in the premium performance luxury segment image wise. In supporting the two-pronged approach, Automan reported last month that Jaguar has recently launched a new marketing campaign called Alive. The multi-faceted campaign is the biggest promotional push in recent times and also takes a look at revisiting the Jaguar. A recap: both the Leaper and the typeface have been reworked. The icon gets a metallic fill and shadow, the type gets wider and shorter, while its metallic look mimics the jewelry on vehicles like the XJ. However, on-line surveys have revealed mixed reactions to the new logo. Jaguars argument is that the dramatic alteration, including significant changes to the brand symbols of the leaper and growler, is the most extensive change Jaguar has made to its visual identification in 40 years. Well, it remains to be seen whether loyalists or punters are buying this idea!

One of the most interesting things about the new logo is that it isnt exactly new: Jaguar practically showed the same transformation to its logo in 2002.

MG back in the game

With full support from Chinas biggest motor car manufacturer, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), MG is all set to ride again globally. SAIC maintains a strong design and engineering presence at the traditional home of MG, in Longbridge, near Birmingham, where since 2011 it also has assembled cars from Chinese made CKD (completely knocked down) packs of parts for the European market. MG Motor UK has been selling the Cruze-sized MG6 sedan and five-door liftback range since mid-2011 a year after it debuted in China and is planning to add the new MG3 light hatchback and just-revealed VW Golf-sized MG5 next year. The British-engineered MG6 impressed pundits when it turned in a fourstar crash test performance in the European New Car Assessment Program (ENCAP) last year, dispelling the impression that Chinese cars struggle to meet western standards. The latest addition to the MG range is the MG5 which was shown to Chinese journalists last week ahead of its expected public unveiling at the Beijing motor show this month, a year after it was shown as a concept at the 2011 Shanghai show. The MG5 reportedly is built on the same platform as the Roewe 350 small sedan on a fresh development launched in China in 2010.

Thats not all. According to a UK-based source, SAICs British engineers are working on a new range of small and large four-cylinder engines to replace the current Rover-based units, along with a hybrid powertrain. A Land Rover Freelander-sized SUV is also said to be under development for release within a couple of years.

Although the Middle East market is a small market for MG, sales have suffered due to a small and aging product portfolio. But that will change very soon and Oman will also benefit from this new drive. Stay tuned for more breaking news from SAIC-MG.

Jaguar Land Rover inks deal with Chery

Having a production plant in China makes sense if production costs are to be brought down for domestic and export markets. Automan has been tracking this development and it seems that a joint venture between Tata Motor-owned Jaguar Land Rover and Chinese automaker Chery Automobile Company is closer to reality as both parties have filed the relevant paperwork before the Chinese authorities for approval.

Should all go well, then under the agreement, the JV set-up will manufacture cars for both Jaguar and Land Rover. There are also talks of developing a new line of vehicles co-developed with Chery also. The joint venture will also create a research and development lab and sell the products created by the partnership.

Electric Roller idea scrapped

Learn it the hard way. The bottom line is that RollsRoyce customers are basically uncompromizing types. It will take a lot of efforts to win them over, especially when it comes to moving into unfamiliar territory. Yes, we are referring to the one-year experiment that the carmaker carried out all over the globe, including Middle East with the electric Phantom 102EX. According to CEO Torsten Mller-tvs, in a recent media interview, he said that while the 500 or so potential customers who drove the 102EX praised the silence and power, they were less keen on the range and charging times. So when customer feedback suggested to RollsRoyce executives that the charging time and the range of its 102EX concept or the electric Phantom wasnt acceptable, the message was loud and clear. As a result, any plan for as production project has been axed.

Suzuki-Volkswagen partnership dissolve delayed

Any dispute that ends up in court will drag on with both sides trading charges at each other. The partnership between Volkswagen and Suzuki is more than two years old and in this period more acrimony and court proceedings have taken place than jointly created or developed products. Stories are in circulation have included Suzuki being upset at how VW has characterized the relationship and that VW hasnt shared its technology, while the German automaker has been suspicious with Suzuki buying diesel engines from Fiat. In a bid to settle the matter, Suzuki has filed for arbitration in a London court. It hopes to compel VW to sell back the 19.9-per cent stake it took in Suzuki in 2009. VWs annual report mentions this aspect and mentions it doesnt expect a court decision on Suzukis arbitration to come before 2013.

Nothing much you can do when you have a near perfect package! Geneva focuses a lot on style and the RX certainly wasnt the car with jaw dropping appeal at Geneva. And that doesnt matter because the Lexus RX crossover is hugely important in the US and Middle East. And while the 2013 model isnt an all-new model, it gets a host of upgrades that makes it a fresher, more attractive offering in the premium luxury CUV segment. The RX 350 will carry over with largely unchanged powertrains. Styling upgrades ensure that the 2013 RX now gets Lexus new corporate face, including the spindle grille similar to that on the GS, LX and CT, complete with LED running lamps. A new F Sport model is planned 2013, which is a stylish and sporty iteration with smoked out headlamps and taillamps, darker wheels, and a bolder, sportier front face.

Considering the downsizing trends and more attention in the entry-level segments by most car makers, Mercedes-Benz is planning ambitious growth in the premium compact segment globally, forecasting more than four million units within the next decade. We can see M-B having a far better chance with this car than its previous half-hearted C-Class hatchback attempts, provided the pricing is attractive. At the show, Daimler officials said that the A-Class will command similar pricing in Europe to outgoing models.

Eleven years after it first coined the term crossover, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) unveiled its third embodiment of this concept with the all-new next generation Mitsubishi Outlander. MMCs complete family of Passenger Vehicles / Crossovers / SUVs will also see a gradual transition to a re-focused design language and the new 2013 Outlander is the first application of such.

For the first time in the companys history, Mitsubishi has selected a European motor show as a launch pad for an all-new vehicle, perhaps reflecting its way of visualizing the most demanding global market for new vehicles. Similar in size to the current car, the 4,655mm Next Generation Mitsubishi Outlander follows a clear design brief where in true Mitsubishi fashion, key directions were for an engineers car with a Solid - Safe - Simple shape, blending substantial look with clean surfaces, as previewed in the Concept PX-MiEV and Concept PX-MiEV II show cars. The Outlander will continue to offer both five- and seven-seat configurations, with the third row reserved for small children. In addition to a range of petrol and diesel models available in various markets paired with a new six-speed automatic or manual gearbox, a plug-in hybrid variant is in the cards. More details will be available after Mitsubishi launches the production version first in Russia in summer, prior to European late summer, Japanese, Oceania, Chinese and North American debuts. 22

Aston debuted this car last months at Kuwait Concours dElegance. The relationship between automaker Aston Martin and Italian design house Zagato dates back over 50 years, beginning with the 1964 DB4 GT Zagato. Most recently, the companies collaborated on the Aston Martin V12 Zagato race car that ran in the 2011 Nrburgring 24 Hours. At Geneva, Aston presented the production version of its next flagship model, the V12 Zagato. The limited to only 150 units Zagato is based on the V12 Vantage architecture, but its body is handmade from aluminium and carbon fibre. Exterior highlights include wider mudguards, carbon-fibre A-pillars and rear spoiler, and unique 19-inch wheels. Under the bonnet is a 510hp version of the 6.0-litre V12 engine.

Jaguar and Geneva have always had a special connection. In 1961, the nowfamous E-Type was launched at the show. The XF Sportbrake has potential to be represented in non-traditional markets also. The XFs fluidic styling has made a successful transition from saloon to station wagon in the XF Sportbrake quite naturally and its so impressive that even the Americans who simply dont like wagons could start looking at this segment. The XF Sportbrake features a massive rear cargo hold with remote folding rear seats and an available power rear liftgate. A selfleveling air suspension helps even out the ride for those who want to tow their caravans in style. Jaguar says the setup has been tuned to deliver the same impressive handling as the saloons. Power comes from two turbodiesel engines, a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder or a 3.0-litre V6.

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is beginning to enjoy a successful career and its natural for the car maker to explore new options or market segments. By far, as one of the most talked-about vehicles at the show, the Evoque convertible concept is the worlds first premium SUV convertible. It is a bold design study that builds on the current models success and reflects Land Rovers expertise at identifying and leading new market segments. The soft-top concept vehicle features a fully retractable premium roof with a Roll Over Protection System (ROPS). The convertible cleverly combines capability and versatility with a drop-down tailgate and a comfortable four-seat setup. While there are no current plans to put the Evoque convertible into production, Land Rover will be gauging reaction to the concept and listening carefully to feedback.

The Emerg-E isnt destined for production for now, but, two working, drivable cars will be built for evaluation later this year. Built as part of a UK-sponsored technology initiative, the Infiniti Emerge-E electric sports car concept is the first Infiniti model to be designed in Europe.

Infiniti made one of the biggest impressions on the press corps at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show with the tagline ulitmate expression of Infinitis inspired performance, the mid-engined, twin-motored Emerg-E concept. Its no secret Infiniti is finding it tough to establish itself as a premium brand in Europe during the depths of a recession, so the brand definitely needs a sparkler to help it move forward. the Emerg-E extended-range electric vehicle

Morgan is a conservative low volume car maker and when change comes to Morgans Malvern, England factory, it comes slowly. However, change is now evident as Morgan has announced a partnership with a series of high-tech British firms to develop the Morgan E+, a prototype electric sports car. Production plans havent been announced. the Morgan Plus E on display at the Geneva Motor Show is a clear step into the blinding light of the future. For this project, Morgan provided the chassis and bodywork from its Aero SuperSports model, while Zytek Automotive kitted the 70 kilowatt electric drivetrain and lithium-ion battery pack. Chassis modifications were handled by Radshape, a precision metal former, and CENEX will provide funding for the project via its Niche Vehicle R&D Program. The Zytek electric motor cranks out 94hp and 221lb-ft of torque and Morgan claims the vehicle can do a 0-100km/h run in a quick-enough six seconds, and top speed sits at around 184km/h which not bad for a car that tips the scales at a relatively light 1,252kg. While theres a 180km range with the Plus E, theres no word on how long it will take to charge the machine.

We have seen how often a group of students can get an idea wrong, but the Geneva show is a bad place for such a blooper. Seen only as a profile, the concept still had a chance but it seems like IED will have to count this as one of their failures. On the other hand we are sure that individual talents behind this car will one day shine on the corporate automotive scene. The Cisitalia 202 E concept car designed by the students of design from Turin based IED was met with indifference at best and some nasty comments from commentators. It must have generated the most negative press other than Bentleys SUV and this can hardly be blamed on the level of great things happening at the show. The institute has been known to deliver some headturning designs for Italian firms. In this case the car was meant to connect back to the Cisitalia 202 of 1947, though the presence of the rear-mounted V8 engine couldnt undo the damage of the ugly shape. 24

Guigiaro is back to doing what he loves best. The sportscar is his element and his connect with the forms of various Lamborghinis is a statement of his appeal to the enthusiast. It is also good to see how he uses traditional elements with the most ultra-modern.

But more than that it is the headlight cluster that projects out and wraps around the body that draws ones attention as it ends mid-door. And the side mirrors are two cameras that emerge from the body of the car and these project their images on a monitor in the car. The three Kia premieres taking place at Geneva cover a broad spread of automotive segments and highlight the diversity of their present and future product line-up. The original ceed was a paradigm shift for Kia, taking the company into the hotly contested C-segment with a truly competitive car for the first time. Just as the original ceed represented a major step forward for Kia in 2007, this secondgeneration model represents a further leap for the brand - both in terms of the capability and sophistication of the vehicle.

KIa

The second generation Kia ceed [not sold in Middle East] had its global premiere at Geneva. More sophisticated, more efficient, more refined and with a more engaging driving experience than its predecessor, new ceed is expected to build on the success of the original model, further establishing Kia as one of the leading automotive brands in Europe. Launched in 2007, the first generation represented a landmark and game-changing model for Kia. Designed, developed and built in Europe, ceed was the first model to establish Kia as a serious contender to the established brands. Winning praise from media and public alike for its all-round ownership proposition, ceed claimed fourth place in the European Car of the Year Awards that year - the highest ever ranking for a Kia vehicle. The Kia stand also had the Trackster concept car and the Kia Ray EV (electric vehicle). These cars were joined by two innovative in-car infotainment concepts the IVI (In-Vehicle Infotainment) and UCD (UserCentred Driving) concepts that offer a glimpse into the future of in-car technologies.

The 208 will also make its entry in the Middle East and Oman should be a hot market for this car as more and more consumers look at thrifty, but stylish European models at Japanese price points.

After recently signing an agreement with General Motors, Peugeot was in full form at Geneva. Two bright concepts, revival of the GTI badging and the successor to the 207, the 208, made an impressive appearance under the bright lights. EU consumers may choose from either the three-door body style you see above or a more functional five-door configuration. Both vehicles feature smaller exterior dimensions than the old 207 but with greater interior volume than their predecessors. Going with the downsizing trend, Peugeot also shrank the available gasoline engine options in the 208. A 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine is good for 75hp, and punters looking for a little more grunt may step up to a 1.2-litre three pot good for 100hp. All told,

PEUGEoT
the 208 is available in five different configurations, including a range of dieselpowered options that include Peugeots next-generation stop/start system, which helps return nearly 83.1 mpg on the EU scale.

At this point, the only firm numbers are tied to the cars European production future. Nissan announced it was investing close to US$200 million to build the Invitation alongside the Juke at its plant in Sunderland, England.

Nissan didnt say much about the Invitation concept. The automaker maintains the Invitation previews its next mainstream B-segment contender. Powertrain details are also lacking, but Nissan says the completed vehicle should be able to emit no more than 100 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

NISSaN

The proposal looks at ways to extend Nissans leadership of the crossover market with a possible expansion of the current Juke-Qashqai-Murano portfolio. A dramatic new concept, the Hi-Cross from Nissan had its World Premiere at the Geneva. The crossover SUV heralds a possible new design direction for the company and could be the X-Trails replacement. Created in Japan, Hi-Cross Concept is compact yet surprisingly roomy, elegant yet purposeful and - being a Nissan - its clever with it.

Toyota can rightly lay claim to being the mainstream leader in hybrid powertrains and has used the Geneva show to demonstrate that it is back on track to maintaining that leadership. Additionally with display of the FT86 II Prototype and the announcement of the GT86 introduction into the European market, the halo days of the Celica and Supra are back.

The Japanese giant used Geneva to showcase some interesting concepts and future directions. The MPV-esque white supermini FT-Bh had its full details revealed, including the use of Toyotas Hybrid Synergy Drive focusing on two alternative powertrains including a compressed natural gas hybrid and a plug-in electric hybrid. The cars weight come in under 800kgs, while interior volume is more than most B-segment cars, with intelligent use of thin seat forms and a minimalist architecture. It may look futuristic but is made from mainstream construction techniques already used by the Company. Another highlight was the presence of the FT86 II Prototype. Covered under camouflage graphics and under the banner of Gazoo Racing, the car uses a new generation of 2.0-litre boxer engines co-developed with Subaru and using Toyotas D-4S injection system. The engine is coupled with a six-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox and an LSD and is in a front-engine, rear wheel drive layout.

The front seats are cleverly cantilevered on the central tunnel, releasing floor space underneath the seats for additional storage. Like every other automotive design house on the planet, Tats has focused heavily on the human machine interface (HMI). What does Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Aston Martin Rapide, VWs Karman Ghia [classic] and Mini Countryman have in common? Chevrolet developed both these concepts at the GM North America Advanced Design studio in Los Angeles with the goal of creating an attractive-yet-affordable sports car targeted to customers under 30 years.

Following the 2012 North American International Auto Show debut, Chevrolets focus shifted to Europe. Chevrolet is looking at inspiring nextgeneration buyers to take the wheel and has invited some talented young designers to co-create these two concept coupes. Chevrolet claims that it has always stood for making the aspirational attainable for all generations. These two concepts interpret that vision for a new generation, especially consumers approaching age 30 who represent 40 per cent of todays potential car-buying public and have the purchasing power. Over the past year, Chevrolet has conversed with young consumers across and based on their feedback, the two Chevrolet concepts explore the styling and functionality this group. Chevrolet Code 130R, the first Chevrolet concept, is a four-seat coupe with a simple upright profile. Painted in an all-new red metallic paint with matte

anodized gold wheels, Code 130R features heritage performanceinspired styling and rear-wheel drive. With an aggressive front fascia, Chevrolet mudguard flares, straight body side and Chevy logo, Code 130R makes a link to Chevrolets performance heritage. Code 130Rs designers conceived the turbocharged engine to be tuned to work in tandem with eAssist technology. By shutting off the engine at stops, recapturing braking energy, and smoothing torque during acceleration, this concept takes automotive electrification to the next level and balances turbocharged performance with fuel economy. Chevrolet Tru 140S, the second Chevrolet concept is a front-wheel-drive, affordable exotic fourseat sporty coupe. The three-door hatchback was designed to be an attractive-yet-affordable

Tru 140S is based off the same platform as the Chevrolet Cruze and the groundbreaking Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range capabilities. Tru 140S designers want to demonstrate technologies typically found in more expensive cars, including direct injection and a starterbased stop-start technology, balancing internal combustion and electrification to deliver high value and improved fuel economy.

The B-Max takes an innovative form just look at the way the doors operate. Ford designers and engineers have managed to eliminate the entire B-pillar, integrating it into the door itself to form an extra wide opening on both sides of the extra-small people-mover.

Critics described the design as awkward and unbecoming of nameplate like Bentley. Bentley says it wants to be 100 per cent sure about the design in as many markets as possible before finalizing the exterior. China and Middle East are expected to take the largest chunk of the sales pie. We hope Bentley does consider the feedback thoroughly and not end up with a controversial design for its first attempt in the SUV segment. If Bentley is bound and determined to sell an SUV, it should come up with something befitting for the brand that doesnt just mimic the classic look of its car line.

BENTlEy
You could say that theres a new player coming in the high-end SUV market which is good news for Middle East and China, where luxury SUVs enjoy unrivalled status. Bentley Motor finally has succumbed to the SUV idea [although in the past it has repeatedly said that there would never be a SUV in the line-up] and not surprisingly promoting the EXP 9 F as a possible third model range. Till Geneva, it was general consensus that Bentley was toying with the idea, however in a recent press release about an executive appointment has virtually confirmed the idea [see breaking news]. However, the big news is that Bentleys ambitious SUV concept which looks like a Mulsanne morphed into a Continental Flying Spur and a GT was the biggest design disappointment at Geneva despite the fact that the luxury sports carmaker left no stone unturned when it came to offering handcrafted materials and a large rear cargo hold with built-in picnic hampers. Mechanically, it gets all-wheel drive and a twinturbocharged 600-hp W12 engine and the new 500hp V8 could be a future possibility. Post Geneva, reports appeared in media that Bentley was reworking the design, according to a UK-base car magazine report which stated that Bentley officials admitted that the design was heavy handed and have promised to tone it down, as the SUV heads toward a likely 2015 on-sale date. Potential changes include slightly smaller headlights, and more traditional SUV proportions. Meanwhile, Automotive News has reported that Bentley is planning to bring the vehicle to the Beijing Motor Show exactly as it appeared at the Geneva Motor Show, despite the fact that the concept didnt exactly debut to resounding acclaim.

Bentley Motors appoints new head of media relations
Responsibilities also include launch of forthcoming unnamed Bentley SUV Bentley Motors has announced the appointment of Andrea Baker as Head of Media Relations who will report directly to Michael Baumann, Bentleys Director of Communications. Baker is a familiar face in UKs automotive industry as she joins Bentley from Porsche Cars Great Britain where as Head of Public Relations, shes currently responsible for Porsche UKs PR strategy encompassing product, motorsport, corporate and heritage communications. Prior to joining Porsche in 2008, Andrea spent eight years at Volvo Car UK, joining the company in 2000 as Media Relations Manager before being promoted to Head of PR, Events and Sponsorship in 2007. She began her career as a Press Officer at the SMMT, the UKs motor industry trade body, in 1998. The virtual giveaway about the imminent launch of the SUV came with a comment on the appointment by Baumann, who said: This is an important new role at Bentley and I am looking forward to Andrea joining the team. She will be responsible for co-ordinating Bentleys global media relations activity at an exciting and crucial time for the company as we look to build on our recent sales success and further expand our global brand awareness. Andrea will also play a key role in communicating the next steps in our plans to launch a Bentley SUV.

Seems that the Swedes are entering Italian supercar territory. Bugattis Veyron Super Sport may be the current land speed record holder for a production car, but it may not hold that title for long as there are at least two other supercars just around the corner and the Koenigsegg is one of them. At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show Koenigsegg presented the brand new Koenigsegg Agera R and making its world debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show is an upgraded Agera R with an official power rating of no less than 1,140hp when running on E85. Thats 25 per cent more horsepower than last years Agera R, which is made possible thanks to a new engine management system and higher revs. Besides that weight has also been reduced on last years model, with one element in particular, a world-first hollow carbon fiber wheel set helping to shave 20.5kg from the latest Agera Rs curb weight.

ou may think that everyone in town seems to be buying an SUV these days, but the midsize car segment doesnt look like its losing its importance at all. For years the segment was defined, depending on the market you were in, by the Camry, Accord, Mazda 6 and the Altima. To customers, these cars represented the essential values of the midsize segment and their runaway success was the envy of the rest of the manufacturers. Now, the times are different. It is not enough to offer reliability, smooth driving and trouble-

free ownership. The newer champions of this segment are barking at the heels of the leaders and surprisingly the interest is not only from Korea. Chevrolet has had a few rather interesting years. They went through a rough patch as did the whole of the car industry, a corporate renovation and some direction-changing policy and have negotiated their way through the past couple of years with success. At the heart of this revival is the importance being paid to product over sales. Secondly, the base of the small car product range is now taken care of by the Spark, Sonic and Cruze all designed and produced out of Korea. While the older Optra and Epica still have a role to play, it

is obvious that the midsize remains relatively weak for the brand, especially considering their long history of great cars in the large car segment. It is this gap that the new Malibu seeks to plug. The seventh-generation car sat in this segment, offering a good option to the Epica while racking in awards and sales figures in the United States. This is where the eighthgeneration car seeks a point of departure from the norm. No longer is it going to be sold as a US-specific car but a global one. Admittedly, Chevrolet have needed this car from a long time since the Epica couldnt take over the role. Now the question is whether the new version has what it takes?

The Malibu takes the best from the brand and sister products in order to jump-start its challenge. You dont have to look beyond the taillights and shoulder-line of the car to see the homage it pays to the Camaro. The Camaros butch look has been overlaid on the car, while it still retains the three-piece suit character of the previous Malibu. A large Chevy bowtie sits on the central bar over the grille and the headlights have a wraparound character that feed into the lines of the sides. The aerodynamic styling on the car has ensured a Cd of 0.29 comparable with the Corvettes and just a little less efficient than the Volts 0.28. The Malibu sits on a shorter wheelbase than before at 2,738mm it is 114mm shorter. This seems to go against the grain of cars getting longer wheelbases as they age through generations. As wheelbases lengthen cabin volume and ride comfort improve. But the Malibu has managed to do the same by changing another aspect of the floorpan the track. So the footprint is a bit squarer now with a larger front and rear track and the generous use of overhangs. You notice the cars overhangs along the lines of those on the end-century 300M and Concorde. Total

interior volume has gone up by 113 litres of which 27 litres has risen in the boot and the rest in a roomier cabin. However, the additional shoulder-room pairs with slightly lower legroom in the rear seat. The gains are mainly in a monstrous cargo space with almost no suspension intrusion. The platform shared with the Opel Insignia and Buick LaCrosse is modified to result in a more planted ride quality due to the wider track. At the same time the body itself has become 20% stiffer through the use of tailored blanks. Suspension elements have also been modified to offer tighter response. The larger looking car manages to avoid looking slab-sided by its intelligent styling. Depending on whether you go for the LS, LT or LTZ trim you can get a choice of wheels and wheel sizes which start from 16 and top out at 18 alloys. The 18 alloys fill the wheel bay and add a sense of correctness to the cars proportions. Again, in keeping with its role of midsize contender, the Malibu is offered in the region with two engines a fuel-efficient 2.4-litre 4-cylinder and the larger 3.0-litre V6. The smaller 4-cylinder unit is touted as a new

engine the ECOTEC unit offers dual overhead cams and direct injection with continuously variable valve timing to deliver 170bhp at 5800rpm and a healthy torque of 230Nm at 4600rpm. The larger engine looks like a carry over with CVVT and the SIDI (spark ignition direct injection) tag, but you really enjoy the torque of the 3.0-litre V6. The 290Nm peaking off at 5600rpm is more noticeable than the cars 260bhp at 6900rpm. The Malibu also gets a new 6-speed auto gearbox in its 6T40 unit. Smooth shifts are accompanied by the ability to maximise the lower torque of the 4-cylinder unit thereby making acceleration runs quick and effortless. While you are tempted to use the +/override on top of the stalk, you are limited by the positioning. One of the issues with the autoshift lever is that it has a relatively long throw, which doesnt match the visual points of the P to M on the console. So you shift the car into D looking at the IP to avoid slotting it into Neutral. Once you are in D all is fine until you decide you want to do a bit of manual selection. For that you have to slot the car into M, which means that in order to use your

AT THE LAUNCH IN DUBAI

The Malibu rolled out to a select group of journalists flown in to cover the event. The midsegment car is keenly anticipated by the GM team in the region as it takes Chevrolet into the volume territory of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, with a fighting chance.

A change in the wheelbase brings with it redesgned seats with more elbow and shoulder-room. While the front legroom remains largely unchanged, the rear does seem a bit more constricted. However the large boot gets even more handy with the flip open hatch in the rear seats as well as a fold-down convenience tray.

Full marks to Chevrolet on the interesting 7 LCD screen. Providing all navigation and info-tainment functions, it even flips open to let you store important stuff behind it. We havent been able to get the screen operational without switching the power on to the radio, but then we presume that the audio can be muted if not needed.

The Malibu is Chevrolets latest entry in our global car portfolio and positions us for continued growth in the passenger car segment. said John Stadwick, General Motors Middle East President and Managing Director presiding over the launch of the car. With expressive styling, a comfortable cabin, outstanding ride and handling, and top-notch safety, Chevrolet Malibu will exceed customers expectations added Stadwick.

thumb comfortably on the select button you have to rest your elbow on the centre armrest with your fits somewhere aligned with your stomach. The Malibu interiors have taken the signature cues of the new generation of Chevrolets with its twin cockpit them and highlighted centre console. The trim strip providing the consoles border draws your eyes along with the blue lighting theme. Higher grades of the car get a nice 7 colour LCD screen with touch activation. On our test drive
38

of the car we thought it would be a good idea to see what else the screen offered in addition to the large Chevy logo and discovered that to activate the screen or indeed any of its functions you had to switch on the power to the audio system. Now that the radio was on, everything else fell in place. Switch the radio off and the screen goes to standby. Thats just a little irritating. However the screen does do a nice trick by allowing you to flick a switch and open it to reveal lighted storage behind it

that is around 6 deep. The dual cockpit theme feels enhanced in the LTZ interiors as the wraparound effect for the driver and passenger is enhanced by the clever use of ambient strip lighting that adds a cool effect in blue just under the outer lip of the dashboard and over into the door handle area. The important features about the midsize cars interiors have all been addressed in this iteration of the Malibu. Right from the legroom, headroom, shoulder-room trio to the

size, form and composition of the seats and even to the excellent levels of NVH in the car. We conducted most of our test drive route in conditions of a sandstorm that had hit Dubai and while the sand across our screens was a distraction, the cars triple door seals, acoustic panelling and good aerodynamics made for a rather quiet drive. There was no buffeting from the wind on the drive path despite blowing crosswinds and no leakage of sand into the interiors.

The only points at which we actually were connected with the environment was when we drove across the growing patches of sand on the road and faced the uneven traction that offered. We drove both the engine variants and can find no fault with opting for the smaller 2.4-litre except that you will have to slog it a bit more if you are in a hurry. The 3.0-litre is where we would expect all the action to at in terms of numbers outside fleet buyers

because of the cars competitive pricing. During marketing presentations the price range of the Malibu was shown to be from 73,000AED to 99,464AED at the top of the order. That is a competitive price range indeed considering the way in which the broad spectrum of Japanese midsize cars have raised their selling prices. In Chevrolets opinion, they see the 3.0-litre LTZ taking on D+ segment cars like the Taurus and Aurion and frankly with this pricing it should be possible.

he selection of the Pebble Beach Concours dElegance last year as the venue for the global reveal of the allnew 2013 GS sedan was a stroke of brilliance. The excellent ambience created by the display of some of the finest cars in history was matched by this vision of the new Lexus. The previous generation of the car had drawn much attention for the new engineering processes that resulted in fit and finish levels not seen before in the breed. This generation takes all that and adds, sophistication, elegance and a level of performance that redefines the Sports

Sedan. The GS has been redrawn and built from the wheels up to embody the new direction at Lexus. No longer are the marketing talking about L-Finesse. Now the emphasis is on the way in which the LFA supercar has cast its halo over the brand. The GS incorporates design cues from the LFA, while retaining touches of the GS visual identity like the profile and treatment of the rear quarter glass and C-D pillar area. The split light assemblies that identified the car are also gone. The headlights are inspired by the LFA, while the

light assemblies inside the headlight have a touch of inspiration from before and an added appeal from the LED daytime running lights. The headlights sit on either side of the new spindle grille that is becoming a signature Lexus cue along with the powerful treatment of the lower air-dams, skirted bumpers and aggressive wheel design. The new GS sits on a wheelbase of 2850mm, which is partnered with the expected short overhang at the front and large rear overhang on the cars 4,850mm length. The front-engine, rear-wheel drive platform orientation remains

44

the gs was alw ays good in han dling but now with the tighter body, more pow erful engine and the active d amper control t he car is a blast to take ar ound curves. w e cant wait to get our hand s on a 450 F-sp ort to see whether it blow s away the germ ans

and the car benefits from a very good weight distribution. New manufacturing techniques partnered with new materials have kept the weight of the vehicle in control it runs a kerb weight of 1,685kgs, which is excellent for a car of the size. Additionally the car is stiffer as well and this is tangible in the quality of its slalom response as well as when it settles into high speed cruising. The interiors of the car have been completely overhauled. At the centre of all the excitement is a new 12.3 monitor that is so prominent that the dashboard looks like it is carved

around the monitor recess. Of course, being on the dashboard means that the monitor has a rather flat proportion so that we get an extended horizontal pane. That is very good for the stylized menu architecture built into the interface. Large icons with very contemporary graphics take you through the intricacies of each function. The basic interface to the menu is through the haptic feedback mouse attached to the centre console and two buttons and two arrow selectors. However, we found that most functions could be addressed through one call to the menu and then judicious use of

the mouse. The operating system is predictive and the tactile feedback is so habit forming that you wonder why your normal computer cant do that! Pairing a bluetooth connection is simple and it takes less than a minute to pair up and have a full streaming bluetooth media player session going. It would have been quicker if we had searched on the device when directed. The interiors of the GS350 sedan that was our test car are definitely among the best in its class. Supple leather feel dominates the dashboard, steering wheel, door trims and

45

fIRst dRIVE

gear knob. The leather continues to dominate the seats in the higher two grades of the trim levels. And the seats themselves are something to write home about with the drivers seat getting an 18-way power adjustment. We had asked the product team to spell out all the 18 ways in which it moves, but what you need to do instead is to seat yourself in the frame and then tailor every part of the seat to hug your body, because that is where the operational range excels. You get precise support around your neck and spine, lower back and even under your thighs and squab area. It is all about getting the man-machine interface just right and the GS has got one of the best seats to do that in, with three memory modes thrown in for good measure. With a 17-speaker Mark Levinson system, USB and iPod interfaces, audio bluetooth and other features including a blind-spot monitor thrown in, the goodie bag is relatively full. The steering wheel bridges the old with the new as it carries the familiar visual identity with new garnishes and the usual complement of levers behind it, including a

discrete paddle-shift. At the same time the IP cluster is less overtly Lexus and more new generation inspired. It is rather busy looking with the familiar large speedo and tach dials but it has room for a good multi-information display in between which even gives you a graphic of the car being scanned as the system starts up. In the entire time we drove the car, we didnt look at the speedo as the HUD throws the digital speed display to float on the windscreen somewhere between near and eternity. The background lighting of the IP changes from a neutral no colour in Normal drive mode to a cool blue in ECO mode and red in both the S.Sport and S.Sport+ mode. These modes are the drive modes that are selectable from the large knob on the centre console. This handy dial allows you to switch between the modes on the fly and controls how the engine, cars electronic and HVAC systems and the gearbox and suspension respond to throttle input. ECO dials back the engine to maximise fuel-efficiency and also monitors the HVAC and seat heaters to try to minimise energy consumption. You have to

push down on the selector and turn to put the car in Normal mode or alternately directly switch to S.Sport. The difference is apparent in the throttle response and acceleration. If you were immune to the physics you also get a nice graphic informing you of the change and of course the IP becomes red. As soon as you dial over one more stop to the right you get the + activated and the graphic shows you that the cars suspension elements are now engaged as well. While the car doesnt use ride height control normally, the hydraulic suspension uses variable pressure valves to allow each wheel to harden up and provide for a flatter ride with less recoil. Take this with an engine that is ready to spool in either direction faster and a gearbox that already holds its gear position so nicely and then throw in the manual mode and you have the stuff that sport sedans are made of. The GS comes to market with two engine choices. The entry level engine is a 2.5-litre V6 with direct injection and Dual VVT-i rated at 207 horsepower and generating a torque of 252Nm. The larger engine is on the 350 in the form of a 3.5-litre

46

Subtle links to the past exist, but the GS is all futuristic and very much influenced by the LFA supercars styling and aggressiveness

Yes, there is room for a 12.3 monitor, which hogs the dashboard. The sound and aircon controls are available as buttons on the flattened unit below

Boot space has risen by 25%, while the engine has a power boost. the ffront passenger gets three memory settings as well

unit with the same basic architecture but rated at a whopping 312 horsepower and 377Nm of torque. Sometime later this year the 450 will also come, which is essentially the 350 with an additional inline hybrid electric motor that does the job of raising it to the higher specification power-wise. The gearbox is a quick-changing six-speed automatic with manual mode. The cabin has been rearranged to give more headroom and some additional shoulder room, with the rear seats enjoying a rather elaborate control panel attached to their centre armrest. However the platform redesign has also resulted in boosting the boot volume by 25% and some good engineering has made the access to all these areas easier, with doors opening wider and the rear hatch opening out clear of the head. Load height is also good. Some things you come to expect of the Lexus car, irrespective of the model you drive. One of them is excellent NVH levels. In the GS the stiffer body-frame keeps noise down to a minimum and the acoustic panelling does the rest of the job. Driving performance is the highlight of this car. Straight line acceleration is great with the standing hundred achieved in just under 6 seconds. Take the GS on curves and you get the icing on the cake. Even without the S.Sport+ mode activated the body is tight and suspension distinctly European in feel. With + mode it rides somewhere between a Golf and a 3-series, tight, highly responsive and with no need to feather the brakes to regain control. And the braking is superb linear, non-fade and predictable. Should you feel like spending a lot more for performance you can get the F-Sport variant of the 350, which looks visually distinct with its dark alloy 19 wheels, mesh like grille background and features like active steering on the rear wheels too, a hard disk based navigation system, F-sport leather seats and steering wheel and pre-crash safety systems coupled with high speed adaptive cruise control. The GS is now perfectly positioned in the premium segment to get the buyer who traditionally went for the driver-centric orientation of the German models. This car is all about the driver and his passion for the road and if you just want to flaunt it the car has every feature that you could want. Our guess is that you will opt for the 350 just for the kick that it brings to the platform. While the 250 is reputed to be good, the extra torque is all the incentive you need to trade up.

SAUD BIN AHMED AL BUSAIDI
WITH JANE JAFFER

Saud bin Ahmed Al Busaidi recounts a life that mirrors the history of Zanzibar from 1914 to the Zanzibar Revolution of 1964. Like many other Omanis who were government o cials, he was imprisoned during the Revolution and feared for his life. One of the lucky ones, Saud bin Ahmed was released and soon ed, eventually settling in Libya where he lived in exile for seven long years. An unexpected turning point came with the rise to power of HM Sultan Qaboos bin Said. Mr Al Busaidis recalls how he felt on that momentous day, a day that was destined to become the most signi cant in the modern history of the Sultanate. This is no ordinary historical account. Saud Al Busaidi tells a gripping, action-packed story that begins by catapulting the reader into the violent outbreak of the Revolution and then ashes back to the idyllic days of his childhood and youth among the royalty of Zanzibar. A master story-teller in the great Omani oral tradition, Mr Al Busaidi speaks openly in a language of natural elegance. The unfolding story shows the author to be a re ective person with a deep love of family and passion for the heritage and future of his country. This is a book that is as informative and fascinating as it is heart-warming and inspiring.

the genre of two seater sports cars just got a lot more fun with the rcZ. and its not quite a two-seater to begin with.

50

51

{ROAd tEst}
hatches and some credible engineering advances that are seeing small-engined turbo-powered units take the place of larger blocks, the day of the dedicated sports car seem numbered. The current crop in the market (especially one like Oman) are limited to a couple of Lotus models, the MX-5 in an on-off availability and a few cars in the premium segment like the Audi TT, Z4, SLK and the Lexus IS-C. The S2000 is no longer sold and the larger brands This havent quite realised the significance of the small ten-spoke sportscar market. design is one of the The RCZ is an ingenious way to customise a best we have seen and sportscar. From the underpinnings and dimensions, an instant draw to the it is apparent that the sleek sportscar is built on the car front-wheel drive architecture of the 308. On its own the 308 uses a three-door hatchback form as well as its alluring CC form to draw in mainstream sporty types. But then these were always considered volume sellers. It is the RCZ that stands out. Using a platform is one thing - anyone can see by the shape and styling that not much metal has been carried over from the 308, especially when it comes to structural and skin elements. The RCZ sits on a wheelbase of 2612mm with a larger front overhang than the rear. This is because of the front transverse engine with front-wheel drive layout and the lack of a substantial boot. But in profile you would hardly notice the difference. The cars styling is handled so that the overhangs looked reasonably balanced and the overall proportions remain exciting. On a length of just a bit over 4.2 metres the car has a height of 1,359mm. The major draw of the RCZ is its taking these proportions, throwing in a greenhouse that is neither coupe, targa or open top in essence and coming out with the best in differentiation. The windshield rakes back to meet the two chrome-finish targa-like roof beams, which in turn curve away to meet the rather interesting shape of a swept tail. Understandably stylists have had to contend with the limitations of using an existing platform, but how can anyone complain when you see the work on the taillights or indeed a great interpretation of the Peugeot grille and hood? However, it is the glass canopy that really sets the car apart. The last time we saw a canopy this prominent was in the little Toyota Sera. Here too, the designers were allowed their moments of fun bringing in a double bubble shape on the glass that helps to add headroom where it is most needed as well as adds strength to the roof. So now you have a glass canopy for a roof what do you do with it? You cover the inside with a whole pile of insulation and roof lining. Talk about being counter-intuitive. Even using thermal glass cannot keep out the heat in summer, so why would you use glass in the first place except that St. Gobain so thoughtfully agreed to make the roofs for you. The interiors are a bit of a let down when you compare this sporty Peugeot with competition in the form of the Audi TT. The dark colours blend in to a sort of blandness offset only by the chrome inserts. And you then have to contend with the quality of instrumentation. There is nothing wrong with the normal set of speedo and tacho dials. The issue is that the expected multimedia interface is more than a

little basic. And the provision of an infographic up near the rearview mirror has nothing to do with the parking sensors (as you would expect), but deals with the seat harnesses. On the other hand the JBL sound system is worth at least a grand on its own. The engine is the strong point of the car being the 156bhp version of the shared 1.6litre turbo powered unit (shared by BMW and MINI that is). Known as the THP 156 in the Peugeot, this unit is a winner in its balance of fuel-efficiency, power delivery and balance. In the RCZ, the engine is mated with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed sequential automatic (we understand there is no demand for the manual in Oman) and the gearbox offers a quick-

shifting +/- mode. The AT6 was developed by the company Aisin AW to specifications set by Peugeot. However, in a theme that seems to be becoming a litany, there is no paddleshift arrangement on the steering column. My Citroen C4 Grand Picasso has it with a 4-speed auto gearbox! So what do we have here? A sportscar that looks like one, has a sporty engine (sadly in Oman we dont get the THP 200 with the bigger turbos), handles like it is on rails, but is shortchanged in terms of amenities and touch and feel elements. One can understand of course that the car is sold for so much less than the competition that has these. But in this day and age what does a 7 LCD monitor

cost? And even cheaper Korean cars gets paddleshifts. As we said, you cannot find fault with the handling and throttle response of the car. Big Plus! It drives like a sporty front-wheel drive should, with understeer just where you expect it and the ability to throw in some oversteer under braking. The body isnt as tight as we expected, but it is more than handy for a boulevard cruiser. We had last driven the car in Spain a couple of years ago and the handy mountain roads were the playground for enjoying the cars mix of nifty handling, a quick responding engine and dynamic steering. Interestingly, the RCZ comes with an active spoiler on the rear deck. It can be manually

the third generation of the Ford Focus builds upon the c-segment champions performance characteristics while adding technology to its handling
Author: Raj Warrior Photography: Raj Warrior

uilt to fill in the position being vacated by the Ford Escort, the Focus has, in two generations covering around fourteen years become a world leader in terms of a c-segment contender.

Fords Kinetic styling sees a new twist with the Focus, giving us the best dynamic fascia on the car since the model series began

The hatchback opens to over head height, with a thoughtful handle to pull it closed (for short people)

The challenge with the centre-console was to make it feel like a mobile phone interface. The cars engine bay is already packed even with the 1.6-litre Ti-VCT engine. What chances of a 2.5-litre turbo RS then?

58

Gen 3 hatchback tail has the kinked rear of Gen 1s, but does a great job of engaging with the pointed wraparound taillights and rear spoiler.

Gen 2 hatchbacks tail is in comparison a lot more muted in styling though it seemed revolutionary for the time. The rear spoiler is smaller and the lights sit higher up.

Gen 2 sedan took cues off the Mondeo of the time for the taillights that hogged the rear edges. Minimal wraparound and large glass area is prominent.

Gen 1 Focus sedan seems almost aged by this time. However you have to remember the huge step it tool in departure from the Escort. It even had a flip open logo to unlock the hood!

In between the two sits the Sport trim level, again best suited to the 2.0-litre engine that matches the name. In Oman the Ambiente and Trend trim levels are offered with the 1.6-litre Duratec Ti-VCT Engine and in all three body styles Hatchback, Sedan and Wagon. In our opinion the hatch and the wagon are the chic style leaders in their segments, the sedan gets a little toned down. The engine is a modified version of the carried over 1.6 unit. With a power output of 123HP @ 6000rpm and a reasonable torque of 227Nm @ 4000rpm. In this generation the engine is a twin-independent variable cam timing (hence the Ti-VCT) layout, which is Fords way of saying that the cams on the inlet and exhaust valves can be adjusted independently. That helps in ensuring that the fuel burn is complete at all ranges of the performance cycle as well as to ensure that exhaust gases get completely vented. We did mention that the torque was a little over middling, but the presence of the new 6-speed automatic transmission with sportshift is a blessing. Previously the European Focus only had a 4-speed auto or alternately a 7-position CVT box. We used to get the 4-speed with the 5-speed manual in the region. The 5-speed manual remains, but the 6-speed auto box is a pleasant change. Quick shifting, with the ability to hold gears on downhill driving, the box is also quite quick to respond to the manual override. You can get the engine to hit the 6,200 rpm redline and roar away. Handling has always been the strong point of the Focus, right from Gen 1. The third generation car carries over the control blade suspension arrangement on the rear axle (designed to optimise the use of the limited space available) in order to maximise cabin and luggage volume. The front suspension doesnt deviate from Fords love affair with

McPherson struts. But, get this - this time around Ford has added in torque-vectoring as a standard feature on its front-wheel drive Focus. Between the introduction of ESP in the previous generation car and this feature, the car has managed to have one of its finest features enhanced. You can take curves with complete confidence. The Focus was always an aim and shoot car. You had a bit of understeer under power, but now that has been reduced a lot. try imagining a pair of lines on the road, where your front wheels are to go and the wheels will follow. We tried it under braking as well and the torque shift handles the stress. We arent quite sure whether the brakes are being feathered at the same time. If at all it is so gentle as to not matter over the amount the ESP takes control. Body stiffness has been increased, NVH insulation added at various points and the building processes are as solid as any German built car has - after all the new Focus is also German made. You just need to shut a door to get the most reassuring thud as it locks in place. One of the features that we dont get in Oman, along with the two higher trim levels and the 2.0-litre Ti-VCT engine is the park assist function on the automatic. The car senses a parallel parking opportunity, asks you whether you need assistance and then all you need to do is touch the gas pedal and brakes as indicated. Quite a neat feature on a mainstream c-segment car, but one that along with the rest of the trim features tends to put the car in a uncompetitive price bracket. Whichever way you look at it the car is a huge improvement and stays loyal to the Focus DNA. High on utility value, with dynamic styling and some good interior features, including Fords Sync, the Focus builds on its handling and performance to deliver a youthful car.

The arrival of the new V8 Continental models in the region this month fulfils Bentleys environmental commitment to produce a new powertrain that delivers a 40 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions

espite the fact that Omans fuels prices is among the lowest in the region, the Sultanates automotive market respects marques that engineers products revolving around efficiency without compromising on performance.

62

Automan has presented the 2011 Bentley Continental GT with the COTY for the Luxury Car segment in its W12 configuration and the newly configured engine ias all set to test the cars ability to hang on to the award for a second year in a row. he CX-5 is the first vehicle of a new Mazda generation that will adopt the full range of Mazdas breakthrough engineering and new design theme. Interestingly, despite the similar nomenclature, there is nothing common between the two models.

he new Chevrolet Trailblazer is based on General Motors new global body-on-frame midsize truck architecture. Although, it has truck-based underpinnings the new Trailblazer has been specifically designed to feature premium ride comfort and handling dynamics for urban and highway driving, matched by superior off-road capabilities. The incoming model will feature leading interior space and intuitive three-row tumble and fold-flat seating, representing Chevrolets most significant play in the competitive body-onframe midsize SUV segment. To be sold in two- and fourwheel-drive configurations, the Trailblazer for Asian markets is powered by GMs new four-cylinder Duramax turbo-diesel engines that offer class-leading power and torque matched with efficiency and refinement. The smaller 2.5-litre engine is rated at 150 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the extra 300cc displacement bumps horsepower to 180 and torque to a particularly impressive 346 lb-ft. A fivespeed manual and six-speed automatic will be offered. The Trailblazer was developed alongside the all-new Chevrolet Colorado mid-size pick-up truck by GM engineers from Brazil. The bold road presence was created by the GM South America Design Centre in So Caetano do Sul, Brazil, and shares a number of design cues with its sister vehicle, the Chevrolet Colorado, in line with Chevrolets global design DNA. Exterior highlights include a body in-wheels out design that delivers high approach and departure angles. A dramatic power dome in the hood combined with a raised cowl designed to give the Chevrolet Trailblazer a strong, purposeful appearance, while higher-mounted dual projector headlamps are positioned beneath the power dome, emphasizing the visual strength in the face of the vehicle. Also prominent is the contemporary dual-port grille - an unmistakable Chevrolet cue - that carries a three-dimensional grille mesh. Ride and handling have been key issues during development as the SUVs core foundation support both on- and offroad capabilities. Independent five-link rear suspension, GM says will help the Trailblazer display none of the typical characteristics of conventional body-on-frame SUVs. In fact, it enjoys a combination of best-in-class luxurious ride and responsiveness. The use of coil springs throughout also should provide the car with better suspension articulation, a useful trait in off-road conditions, in addition to providing passenger car-like handling dynamics on the road. And depending on the specifications and markets, the mid-level LT and the range-topping LTZ will be offered with a pretty long list of standard features, including lots of safety equipment stability control, ABS, traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, and hill descent control.

tech talk

ost car buyers in the Middle East could be forgiven for assuming that having a larger engine capacity under the hood of a car necessarily means more horsepower and better performance. The breed of the American muscle car can be blamed for some of the misunderstanding and the rest on sheer assumption. The catch is that a petrol engine of any volume is largely a blank canvas for the engineer to decide how much power to extract from it, how fast to get the engine to crank over and in the balance to tune the best torque he can out of it. A very simple thumb rule is that you can take any four-stroke engine of a specified capacity and get different natures of output by varying broad characteristics. A 2.5-litre 4-cylinder behaves differently to a 2.5-litre V6, just as two 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engines can vary in their power and torque just by the simple expedient of changing their cylinder bore and stroke parameters. We will address the finer points of the options in later articles, but here we can dwell on one point. That is that in a 4-stroke engine, every fourth stroke is the power stroke. Hence in a 4-cylinder engine you technically have a power stroke on one cylinder at every stroke. The more times you can get the engine to deliver power strokes every minute or second, the more the engines power delivery. This is limited by many factors, primarily the engines ability to handle the stresses of high revolutions, the heat generated by friction and the lower torque that high-revs generate. Many decades ago, engineers realised there was a way to overcome many limitations of the 4-stroke engine. Right at the time when the internal combustion engine was getting accepted at the end of the 19th century, Gottlieb Daimler had patented a gear-driven pump that force fed air into the engine (or the supercharger as we know it). The turbocharger was invented by a Alfred Bchi in 1905. The difference between the two was that in the case of the screw driven

HUFF AND PUFF

AND ZOOM AWAY
This graphic courtesy AMG shows the location of the turbocharger and intercooler as well as a view of the intake cooling arrangement

compressor, the engine was the only handy power source to turn the screw, thereby using a fraction of the engines power to drive the very mechanism that made it run faster. This meant that there was a degree of power lost to the system, which is all very well when you are using the mechanism to increase power output by a significant amount. The turbocharger works on a completely different principle. It uses the exhaust gases from the engine to turn a compressor vane. The gases passed over one vane as they went out and the force generated by the rotation was used to directly push fresh intake air into the engine

intake manifold. The history of the development of the turbocharger traces the growth of both the aviation and motor industries. So how does a force feed help. 4-stroke engines operate the Otto-cycle, where there is a charge cycle that draws in the air-fuel mixture as the piston goes down, compresses the charge on the following upward stroke, rams the piston down on the ignition of the mixture through a spark plug and then pushes out the exhaust gasses as the piston rises again, only to repeat this ad nauseum. Expecting the suction to draw in a full charge is futile except in extremely finely tuned engines.

From a roots compressor on the right, to views of the turbocharger as used in modern cars

The latest generation of mainstream car are mostly opting for smaller engines paired with a turbocharger or supercharger. Whats the difference between the two? And why should you consider switching to a boosted engine?

In a force fed engine, the air-fuel mixture is delivered under positive pressure provided by the supercharger or turbocharger. Its the difference between you breathing on your own or breathing from a pump. The compressor takes air, compresses it and then pushes the larger mass of air into the same volume, thereby increasing the efficiency of air delivery and hence combustion. In principle it doesnt matter whether the compressor is driven by a chain from the engine or from the exhaust the effect is similar. But a turbocharger has to deal with the high thermal envelope of a modern engines exhaust system and generally comes into its own only after the engine crosses a barrier in terms of revolutions called the boost threshold, below which the vanes spin without any significant addition to boost pressure. One advantage of a turbocharger is that it can be used to compensate for high altitude performance where a normal engine may not get enough air. Thats why turbochargers are almost always used in aviation pistonengines as they can handles the rigours of rarified air. Over the past few decades, new materials and new manufacturing processes have moved the turbocharger into mainstream applications in automobiles.

The issue with turbochargers is that they operate in a super-hot environment and hence can fail due to heat, high velocity (spin) or forces and reliability needs to be addressed. The last decade has seen most issues with turbochargers being ironed out and a whole spectrum of companies are including turbopowered engines in their arsenal. And not always for the extra power that they can generate (as seen in the use of turbo-powered small volume engines in Formula 1). The new mantra is to use the power of the turbocharger to improve fuel efficiency, without sacrificing on power and performance. Take iconic cars like the Nissan GT-R, Porsche 911 and McLaren MP4 12C they all use 3.7 or thereabouts turbocharged engines with around 400 horsepower. Mercedes AMG have been downsizing their engines from the straight grunt provided by the V8 6.2-litre units to smaller force fed 5.5-litre engines, which are more powerful as a consequence. Most turbo-powered engines also get an intercooler or a charge air cooler. The very process of compressing a mass of air increases the temperature of the air mass. This can raise the temperature in the system to levels where the mechanism fails or runs at low efficiency levels. The intercooler is in effect a heat exchanger that draws out the heat from the charge and vents it elsewhere. This improves the efficiency of the charge and boosts output. Superchargers are also used for the same purposes and AMG has a long history with the Kompressor. Superchargers are powered from the engine crank or through a motor and can be either positive displacement (roots type or screw type) or dynamic displacement type. The type we are most commonly exposed to are the Roots type and Screw type, with the screw actually being two helical screws that compress air, these are usually motor driven. Some newer engines also use a combination of the turbocharger and supercharger, with the latter used to fill the performance envelope below the boost threshold and to overcome turbolag. Turbolag is a term that we commonly use in the pages of Automan and is used to describe the perceptible drop in performance as we stomp down on the accelerator, causing a mismatch between the need for forced air and its supply. This can be tuned down to a minimum but the supercharger has become a very effective tool to bridge the lag.

maserati series ends on spectacular note

ebanese driver Joe Ghanem came out on top of the inaugural Maserati Trofeo JBF RAK series after two sensational races at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Patrick Zamparini managed to secure two race victories after race-long battles with his closest rivals, it was Ghanems consistent running throughout the weekend that secured him series honours. So close was the action that the winner of both races was decided in the closing stages. In race one, Zamparini transformed pole position, which he acquired with a stellar lap in qualifying yesterday into victory ahead of Saudi Arabian national Faisal Shaker. It was really good, said a jubilant Italian

Zamparini. In the first race, I overtook two guys and had good pace, even without pushing too much. Then in the second I was having a great fight with Joe. He managed to get past me at one point, but I thought, no way. Im getting that position back again! And I managed to get back past him. I think it would not have been easy to overtake me. Not today! Shakers strong result also moved him into second place overall in the series ranking. Owing to an early safety car period, caused when Ramez Azzam and Mohammed Jawa came together in the midst of their own battle, Tanni Hanna finished close behind Shaker in third. The Lebanese rookie proved to be a very popular addition to the podium

given the reception he received. Zamparini also secured victory in the second race after a superb race-long three-way battle with Ghanem and Ramez Azzam. At the flag, it was the Canadian who secured second place ahead of Shaker, who secured his second podium of the day and his eighth national podium of the season. Argentinian Justino de Azcarte Riiveroll once again continued his strong run with fourth place, while Kuwaiti Khaled Al Mudhaf finished a sensational fifth after fighting his way through the field from twelfth on the grid. gears in 60 milliseconds and 4.7-litre engines producing 488bhp, the handling and precision engineering involved in these amazing racing machines are a true testament to both the sporting heritage the charisma and passion indicative of Maserati. At a celebratory dinner at the stunning Yas Hotel, Ghanem was crowned series winner, with Shaker and third-placed Zeehog also receiving their plaudits. So close has the racing been this year that less than a race victory separated Shaker and Zeehog in the final standings. Umberto Cini, Managing Director of Maserati Middle East and Africa, was thrilled to see such an exciting finale to a successful first season. This has been such a great first season for the Maserati Trofeo JBF RAK series. Weve seen more than twenty drivers from twelve countries compete in the series and produce some truly exciting racing at each of the world class venues weve visited. Congratulations to all the drivers for keeping us on the edge of our seats all through the year.

Formula One may, to outsiders, seem like a monolith, but it is in fact a gathering of rather disparate parties. Theres the FIA which governs the series from a sporting standpoint, theres the collective of teams competing in the series, and Formula One Management, the company that holds the sports commercial rights under the direction of one Bernie Ecclestone. The only way they all get along is through the terms of the Concorde Agreement the contract that divides up the spoils, namely television revenues and prize cash, between the parties. And that contract is coming up for renewal. Ecclestone is eager to please the teams and get them to sign what will become the seventh Concorde Agreement when the current one expires at the end of the year. And to get there, rather than negotiate with all the teams equally, Bernie has been offering big incentives to certain teams. Those include in particular Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull the teams which have, in the past dozen years or more, accounted for the lions share of the titles (both drivers and constructors). F1 would suffer a tremendous blow if any of these teams were to leave, so Ecclestone has reportedly offered them such incentives as cash bonuses, shares in Formula One Management and seats on its board, and performance incentives that would in theory be open to any team that achieves them but would in practice favor those three top team. One team being left out of those incentives is Mercedes, one of the largest automakers participating in the sport running its own team and supplying engines to two more (including McLaren), not to mention the safety and medical cars used at each grand prix. According to The Telegraph, Mercedes is now threatening to take legal action under European competition laws (regulations that are formulated to prevent the abuse of a dominant position) if it gets left out of the incentives being offered to other top teams. Ecclestone may be forced to cave to Mercedes demands, lest he find himself back in court while losing a top team and engine supplier from his roster. Formula1.com quoted Formula One Group Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone saying: I am very pleased to announce that we have reached commercial agreements with the majority of the current Formula One teams, including Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull Racing, about the terms on which they will continue competing in Formula One after the current Concorde Agreement expires at the end of this year. Surprising results from seasons first races

New regulations and some essential tweaks to the aerodynamics of the cars, with lowered noses and lessened aero assist from exhaust draft brought about two podiums in the season-opening races that could not have been foreseen with last years Vettel rampage.

e left off coverage last month at the point where Marussias car looked like it wouldnt get any test time as it had failed its final crash test and HRTs car had yet to be unveiled. But March turned out to be positive for both these teams as Australia opened. HRTs F112 came out from under the wraps on the Catalunya circuit with Narain Karthikeyan behind the wheel. Marussias MR01 also finally passed its test in time to allow the car to undertake a couple of days of promotional filming on the Silverstone circuit. Both Timo Glock and Charles Pic got opportunities to drive the car in non-test situations. We were all thrilled to see the new car out on track over the past two days, said the teams technical consultant Pat Symonds. And whilst we have a lot of catching up to do, we take heart from the fact that everything is back on a more positive trajectory. Marussia also remained in the news with the announcement of Maria de Villota joining their testing line-up. She is the daughter of ex-Formula One driver and British Formula One series champion Emilio de Villota. She had initially tested for Caterham (as Team Lotus) last year. A number of women have already competed in Formula One racing including Italians Giovanna Amati, Maria Teresa de Filippis and Lella Lombardi, Briton Divina Galica and South African Desire Wilson. The best finish for a female driver was Lombardis sixth place at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix.

melbourne sets a new standard

he opening day of practice saw the McLarens lead the way with Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton taking the first two spots with a difference of only 0.245secs between each other and 0.6 seconds ahead of Michael Schumachers Mercedes. The McLarens made their run at the end of a day punctuated with rain showers, beating Schumachers timing to grab their lead. The Mercedes F1 W03s passive nasal F-duct was cleared by the FIA stewards as legal. Other strong forms were shown by Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg. The final day of practice became a showdown between the two McLarens and the Mercedes silver arrows. However Michael Schumachers run ended in gravel, as did Sebastian Vettels. The last fifteen minutes of the session saw Lewis Hamilton shoot to the head with a time of 1m 25.681secs, in the process getting ahead of Romain Grosjean in his Lotus E20. Webber followed, showing that the Red Bull car was still on top form and he was followed by Button in the McLaren and Rosberg in the first Mercedes in turn followed by the other Mercedes of Michael Schumacher. After qualifying, back-runner Sergio Perez

had to suffer the further ignominy of dropping back five places on the grid because his team decided to replace the faulty gearbox which had seen him unable to attempt a run in Q2. The Sauber C31s gearbox was replaced and Perez had to start at the rear. The race on Sunday brought about a welcome change for McLaren with Button taking a charging lead off his team-mate Hamilton at the start and holding the lead through the race despite a safety car intervention brought about by Petrovs Caterham having to stop on the pit straight in the 36th lap. The timing was bad for McLaren because they had just pitted their cars and Vettel decided to keep his Red Bull out, allowing him to move his car into second spot. Buttons pace was unmatchable as the safety car withdrew on lap 42 and he ended the race 2.1 seconds ahead of Vettel, followed by Hamilton a further 1.9 seconds down the line. Hamiltons car never seemed as balanced as Buttons through the race, making him look lucky to fend of Webber who ended the race in fourth just 0.4 seconds behind him. A quick opening charge allowed Alonso to get his Ferrari up four spaces on the opening

lap and to end in fifth place. But Mercedes, who had shown such promise with their cars in practice seemed to lack the staying power and had to contend with Schumacher damaging his car and having to retire. The battle for sixth place may have almost gone to Pastor Maldonado, who had shown such promise in his Williams FW34 in second qualifying and during the race. However his hard charging ways that took out Romain Grosjean also saw him crash his car into the wall in turn six on the 57th lap, handing over the sixth place fight to the Saubers of Kobayashi and Perez among a clutch of others, with the former getting home in sixth with Perez in eighth with Raikkonen taking the spot in between. Rosberg with a deflated tyre as a result of a run-in with Perez ended up in 12th in a bad day for Mercedes, who had started the day with such hope. So the first race gave Button his 25 points while Mclaren start of the season with a combined 40 points.

malaysia continues mclarens run

As the teams moved across to Malaysia the teams were busy trying to get the best out of their cars, with some of the teams using the Melbourne session to tweak their cars for performance.

he practice days showed the strength of the Mercedes cars that had trouble in Melbourne. Rosberg pushed his Mercedes to the top of the practice sessions. But qualifying was a different ball game with the McLarens showing their new form Hamilton beat Button into P1 position as the Mercs of Schumacher and Rosberg took their positions on single runs in an attempt to conserve rubber on their tyres. Fifth position was up for grabs between Mark Webber in his Red Bull and Raikkonen in his Lotus, but the Finn had to drop five places because of his gearbox change during practice. Sundays race was however not won by any of the starters, as Fernando Alonso took his Ferrari to the winning spot, followed by the Sauber of Sergio Perez and Mclarens Lewis Hamilton. The race itself was dictated by the weather as any race in Sepang is likely to be the clouds were out as the cars gathered on the start line and the rain fell before the start. The wet start saw Romain Grosjean shoot through the second row to take third place temporarily before taking out Schumacher and himself later on. With everyone but the HRTs starting on intermediate tyres, the rain saw Perez in for wet tyres, followed by Ferraris Massa and a clutch of others. Hamilton stayed out till lap 5 despite sliding around, managing to change and get out ahead of Button. Perezs quick dash in for wets now saw him up in third ahead of a hard charging Webber staying at his tail. The safety car came out on track by the sixth lap and the cars followed in order till the race was red flagged. That meant that Hamilton led the race, followed by Perez, Webber, Alonso, the second Red Bull with Vettel, Toro Rossos Jean-Eric Vergne, Massa, Rosberg and Narain Karthikeyan who had read the weather correctly and started the race with wet tyres on his HRT. Then came the announcement that the race would be resumed at 5.15 pm behind

the safety car, with all the cars on wet tyres. Despite some light rain the track was drying up and the scarmble would be on to switch back to intermediates. Button switched to his set on lap 13, followed by Alonso on lap 14 with Hamilton and Webber. Perez took his Sauber in on the next lap along with Button who had clipped Karthikeyans HRT. While Buttons chances slid away, Perezs were improving through the use of good race strategy. All the way till the end, Perez doggedly chased up the car of Alonso, allowing Alonso to open a lead but then steadily whittling it away as the laps progressed. With more rain forecast the gamble was to make the intermediate tyres last as long a s possible. With his lead shrinking on Perez, Alonso shot into the pits on lap 40 changing his tyres to medium slicks with Perez following in and changing his tyres to a harder setting. By lap 49 perez had got to a stage where he was practically on Alonsos tail. But he made a costly mistake by sliding and even though he recovered he was no longer challenging for lead by the end. Alonso had a great drive, but by his performance Perez was really the man of the minute. Hamilton came in third without any of the drama the leaders were going through, though it took Vettel hitting Karthikeyans HRT to give Webber his fourth place. A quick pit stop and change of his wing saw him end the race in 11th after Pastor Maldonados engine gave way. Fifth place was taken by Raikkonen in his Lotus followed in by Bruno Senna who had moved himself up the order from a lowly 22nd on the start line. Karthikeyans race ended with a 22nd place after he had 20 seconds added on as penalty for causing the crash with Vettel. Kobayashi, Perezs team-mate had to retire. Now we move on to China with a switch around in the order. Ferrari finally have something to smile about with Alonso leading the order with 35 points, ahead of Hamiltons 30 and Buttons 25. But McLaren still stays ahead of the constructors championship with 55 points, followed by Red Bull.

An FF as thanks

After winning the second race of the season and taking the lead in the standings, Alonso swung by Ferrari headquarters for a nice long chat with chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, some training in the on-site gym and the traditional raising of the flag to mark the occasion, after which the two-time world champion apparently was gifted a brand-spankin new Ferrari FF. Whether the four-seat, all-wheel-drive, V12-powered shooting brake was a bonus outlined in his contract or a simple gesture of appreciation from his employers is likely known only by Alonso, Montezemolo and very few others, but either way, we doubt Fernando is complaining. The FF joins a growing stable of cars the star driver has received since signing with Ferrari, including a custom 458 Italia, a Maserati GranTourismo Convertible, an Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari and a special edition Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Nice work if you can get it.

MOtOR sPORts -f1 Pirelli to use 2010 Renault for tyre testing
Official tyre supplier Pirelli have announced they will replace their current Toyota TF109 test car with the more contemporary Renault R30 for this season. The 2010 car will be adapted to simulate the latest technical and aerodynamic regulations to aid tyre development. With official in-season testing limited to one further session at Mugello in May, a test programme with a contemporary car will play a vital part in Pirellis tyre development throughout the year. It was clear from an early point that we needed a more modern solution for our test car, as while the Toyota TF109 has served us extremely well, it is now three years-old, said Pirellis motorsport director Paul Hembery. Technology as well as the regulations have moved on considerably since then, and the Toyota is no longer able to generate the same sort of forces that we need to simulate in order to meet the current requirements of Formula One.

Williams chairman Parr leaves team

Williams announced that their chairman Adam Parr will depart the team at the end of the week. Parr joined Williams as chief executive officer just over five years ago to assist team founder Frank Williams. I asked Adam to join Williams at the end of 2006 to support me in the running of our team, said Williams. Over five years, Adams achievements have surpassed my expectations and I must thank him for his service. Not least for the decisive role he played in the technical changes made last year which are beginning to show through in the teams improved competitiveness this season, and for leading this company to a successful IPO. Adam leaves us on good terms to pursue a better balance in his life for which I wish him and his family well. He has left us in good shape and I have every confidence that the Board and senior management team at Williams will continue to drive the business forward into a promising future.

The F2012s problems are far from over

Formula One finances

Formula One Group has launched a process to extend its current financing facilities. This will involve raising $2.27bn of new facilities with maturities in 2017/18, replacing the companys existing $2.92bn facilities which are due to mature in 2013/14. The new facilities will provide the business with a secure, long term capital structure. Proceeds raised will be kept within the Group for general corporate purposes and the company has no current plans to pay a dividend.

Nine different teams in Malaysia top ten

An amazing nine of the sports 12 teams had a presence among the top-ten finishers (only Force India brought both cars home in the points) - something which hasnt happened since Europe 2010. Not only that, incredibly, those ten cars were covered by less than 50 seconds after an intense 310.408 kilometres of racing. As a result, with just two rounds of the 2012 FIA Formula One World Championship gone, nine teams - 75 percent of the grid - have scored points. Last year that situation didnt arise until round six of the season in Monaco.

Fernando Alonso may have may have left Malaysia victorious and leading the drivers championship, but Ferrari arent about to start resting on their laurels just yet. Although pleased with the Sepang win, team principal Stefano Domenicali is under no illusions about the F2012s shortfall to its rivals and is determined the hard work at Maranello continues apace. I asked all my people to push to the maximum to try and bring forward as much as possible the developments planned for the next few races, Domenicali told Ferraris official website. Ferraris engineers and mechanics had regrouped in Italy to analyse the Malaysian weekend and start their preparations for next months Chinese and Bahrain Grands Prix. With the F2012 a few tenths shy of the pace of its fastest rivals, Domenicali believes that as well as improving the car they must be ready to swoop when a chance presents itself, as Alonso did in Malaysias changeable conditions, if they are to repeat their Sepang success.

rally mexico sees another win for loeb

Sebastien Loeb made it the sixth successive win at Rally Mexico for himself and Team Citroen. In doing so, Loeb and co-driver Daniel Elena have increased their lead at the top of the FIA World Rally Championship powered by Nokia. It was the factory Citroen duos second victory of the season and their 69th in the WRC. I am very happy, said Loeb. I always win here! It is a great result for the team as well, with Mikko [Hirvonen] finishing second, a onetwo for us. Behind Hirvonen, who won the monster 54.30kilometre Guanajuatito test, Power Stage winner Petter Solberg claimed the final place on the podium following a dramatic closing morning on the gravel stages around host city Leon. Solbergs factory Ford team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala was on course to finish third having recovered from a host of setbacks earlier in the event only for disaster to strike on Guanajuatito when went off the road he rolled after getting distracted when Evgeny Novikov crashed ahead of him. Although Latvala was able to limp to the stage finish, damage to the roll cage of his Fiesta was too severe to the extent he was unable to tackle the final two stages of the event, forcing his second retirement of the 2012 season. I saw from far away Novikovs car and I was very confused, said the Finn. I first thought the car was on the road and I made a movement to avoid it and my car went off and rolled. It took a lot to get it back on the road. Mads Ostberg survived a puncture on Guanajuatito to finish a strong fourth in his Adapta Fiesta with Ott Tanak fifth for M-Sport and Nasser Al-Attiyah sixth for the Qatar World Rally Team. Armindo Araujo was seventh for WRC Team MINI Portugal, one place ahead of Sebastien Ogier, who claimed his and Volkswagen Motorsports first points of 2012. Monster World Rally Teams Ken Block took ninth with Ricardo Trivino finishing as the top Mexican in 10th overall to finally bag his first WRC point, four years after he was excluded from a points finish on the same event due to a rules infringement. Countryman Benito Guerra finished 11th overall for his maiden victory in the Production Car World Rally Championship with category rival Nicolas Fuchs next up in his similar Mitsubishi Lancer. Michal Kosciuszko continues to lead the PWRC standings by returning under Rally 2 regulations to finish third in class and 14th overall. Citroen Junior driver Thierry Neuville started the final day by claiming his first stage victory in the WRC when he went fastest on the Leon Autodromo Super Special. He made it to the finish in 13th position following his return to the action under Rally 2 on Saturday morning. Chris Atkinson restarted on the final day but retired his Monster-backed Fiesta on Guanajuatito with damaged suspension.

volkswagen takes lessons from mexico

Volkswagen Motorsport had every reason to be satisfied at the finish of Rally Guanajuato Mexico and not just because Sebastien Ogier scored his and the teams first World Rally Championship powered by Nokia points of 2012. With the squad using the trip to Leon to refine its logistical operations prior to the start of 2013, when it will compete with its all-new Polo R WRC, team manager Sven Smeets said many valuable lessons had been learned. We learned a lot, and although it might seem like small things, put together they add up to a lot, said Smeets. Firstly it was important to give Sebastien and Julien experience of the stages, as many of them are different this year. But its also important to give the team experience. This was our very first experience outside of Europe, so we needed to see how the logistics and containers would work and give our mechanics experience of working in these circumstances. It was also important to get to know the city, the hotels, and Volkswagen Mexico. If we were coming in next year with no experience of these things, it could detract from our real work. That is why this practical experience we are getting on the WRC is so important this year.

Jerez tests prove critical

Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa conclude winter testing without ever dropping out of the top three on the various timesheets. After three days of testing in Southern Spain, Stoner showed that he was the rider to beat and recorded the fastest time of the Jerez visit. Yamahas Lorenzo placed in between the Australian and Repsol teammate Pedrosa, who concluded the test in third position. Only Stoner and Lorenzo were able to break the 139 mark, whilst Pedrosa came exceedingly close. Only three tenths of a second separated the three riders in the final standings.

a thought for life

Ive never really waxed philosophical on anything - including automobiles. But I have been called a philosopher by my secondary school English teacher as he caught me gazing out at the squirrels climbing the tree outside our classroom instead of listening to him describe the emotions behind Charge of the Light Brigade. The sobriquet stuck through school and I tried to live it down as much as I could. Adult life, thankfully brought with it a fresh set of adjectives, some of them quite unrepeatable. But try as I might, I cant forget the philosopher label since almost everything I read in media, the people and events I encounter and the way in which our society is evolving brings with it a share of thinkers moments. Rodin hit the spot with his sculpture of the man caught in deep reflection - it is as good a portrait of oneself as one could desire. Take away the muscled body, lack of clothes and stony countenance and it could be me. But I digress - thinking is something that defines the human species and keeps us ahead of animals, that is until some monkey learns to talk and tells us just what they think of us. My first thought for this month is for the 22 children who perished in a Swiss tunnel. Three countries grieved for them, thousands of flowers were laid and hundreds of hours were devoted on mainstream media channels to ponder over the tragedy. I share the feeling of it being a tragedy - after all my son is almost the same age and I know how I would feel to lose him. But how many of you heard of the bus tragedy the next week in central India that took the lives of 14 children? Or the school bus tragedy in China a few months ago that took almost 20 lives? Or indeed how many spare a thought for the college girls who lost their lives here in Oman last year? Werent they all tragedies of similar scale? How come the whole globe mourns for kids who die in Europe and America, yet doesnt spare a thought for the rest of the worlds kids? My second thought is that somewhere down the line, we as members of society, as parents and as individuals live with double standards. It is usually based around the importance of some factors as they apply to us. How is it fair that they apply to everyone equally? One caveat that applies here is that oddly enough in the realm of personal safety we seem to think that good fortune will save us and our kids, while the rest of the world needs airbags, seatbelts and child seats. Another thought that warrants the crooked arm under our collective chin is the value that we attach to a human life. Agreed, in different parts of the world it is different. All that separates you from another unfortunate halfway around the globe is the number of zeroes at the end of the insurance amount. Now that is surely something that you need to philosophise on. But then, that is the beauty of being a professional philosopher - you can think a thought threadbare, yet dont have to act as a result of all the thinking. Accidents are called that because they happen accidently. Lives are saved in such situations by passive safety systems like airbags and seat restraints. Designers and engineers are responsible for saving more lives than all the worlds philosophers since the times of Socrates. You could also argue, like any of Rodins thinkers should, that it is the very same designer and engineer who is responsible for the tunnel, the road and the bus in the first place and hence the reason that people lose lives. Albert Einstein is reputed to have said, When I study philosophical works I feel I am swallowing something which I dont have in my mouth. The worlds leading name in theoretical physics and the father of Relativity seems to have missed the point. A philosopher would have been able to assign a taste to that emptiness.
