During ninetieth century, in the era of bustles, petticoats and veils stifled women physically the society imposed

standards against women that stifled them mentally. Women in this era seemed molded into a prefect form since birth with guidelines on how they speak, act, dress and marry. They were unable to get education, working skills and rights in on way. In every part of their life male authority figure control them beginning with their father of birth and persisting them into early womanhood until marriage where their husband possessed control over them. Man believes to be superior and another inferior in womans life. They will be ruled over as children and could be seen but not being heard. As Kate Chopin lived in the height of the Victorian age and become aware to the suppression women went through and accepted in the late 19th century Chopin portrayed as more than a conformist. Kate showed more concern to the pledge of woman in Victorian era she responded to the womens pledge of women in Victorian era. She responded to the womens pledge through scandalous writing that focused on love, sex and marriage Women from 17th through 19th century had to access to power in various ways seemed restricted by how society believed on how a woman should be observed they faced difficulties on expressing themselves in a patriarchal system that basically avoid to give mend to womens views. Women were portrayed as weak and passive. This was standard idea that a woman should be looked. Furthermore she was not heard, chaste, silent but be obedient to her husband. Women were fully placid on never involving in violence and other hand the men were known as strong heroic leaders of the household. Society seemed to fulfill the patriarchal pattern through the centuries that strictly divided the male and female roles and expected behaviors connected to them. Education In this era womens education usually end at the age of twelve that at primary level. They had no opportunity to the academic and college which provided advanced education to boys. High professional qualification important only for the man. Seminaries the private secondary schools only develop during the early 1800s as the society begins to show interest in furthering educational opportunities for women. During the mid and late nineteenth century womens colleges were founded in order to obligate the need for advanced education in the most institutions f higher education. Societal trends like the growth of labor saving devices in the home , lack of teachers based on the incensement of common school , greater demand for reading materials for women , more deeds and lack of employment opportunities for women because civil war provoked to high demand go higher education for women. Although educational level of women rose by the end of the ninetieth century yet it unable to reach parallel to men. Employment The duty of lower class women could be women could be servants ., domestic help , factory workers , prostitutes and etc. middle and upper class women could help to certain extend , mainly with family business , but more importantly the economy and society stated that women should work in the home ,

taking care of home and hearth. Women could be educated and could study unless it did not disrupt with their housework. Passionate or serious study of any subject considered as harmful to the family expect if the study dealt with a social or religious issues or to the women , herself if a woman become too scholarly , her uterus unable to function well that can be lead to madness according to physicians belief. One such example on a women could be when charlotte Brontes request on pursuing career and send letter to Robert Southey , the poet laureate of England , he replied to her by saying literature is not business of a womens life and it cannot be that cause depression to the charlotte Bronte. Motherhood and domesticity Motherhood was described as a noble role and considered as the most important and the importantly responsibility for women. Women realized their responsibility for domestic affair and need to fulfill their domestic activities as naturally belonged to women naturally as childbirth. Husband is the head of the household and moral leader of the family. A wife role was to lover, honor and obey her husband based on her marriage wows stated. She needs to be pious, pure and submissive to men besides attainting their role in domesticity. She is only secondary to her husband and far from regards as unimportant. Victories considered them being wife they must tend to their husbands need and properly raised her children that is important cornerstones of social stability during that era. Women need to meet the society expectations or else they would receive harsh criticism for the society. The roles and assigned and responsibilities that need to perform by men and women were divided strictly based on their nature. The men was regarded as sensible , confidence , individualistic and materialistic in contrast women need to be depended , loving , leads a moral life , innocent , gentle and scarifying. Women were irrational, passive and compassion in the eyes of a Victorian because they were influenced by emotions and depends on their intuition nevertheless men were considered to be moral reasonable, active and powerful. The law the ninetieth venture highlighted that a wife identify was combined into that of the husband, the husband was a legal person but the wife was not. The husband got his entire wife personally property and took control all the property belonged to her. The husband was required to provide support to his wife and children. Therefore a wife shouldnt sign a contract without approval or signature from her husband. Marriage In the Victorian age, marriage was perhaps as one of the most considerable points in a women life. It was not a romanticized or fairy tale as presented in many novels of that era. Nevertheless love in fact played a very minor role in the most matrimony that took place. Most of the women did not although it was still important for a man to get married but it was not crucial as for women.
