Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station was originally commissioned with four 500MW Parsons Generators in 1968. The power station originally utilised a magnetic amplifier excitation control system. This excitation equipment was later replaced with first generation digital excitation systems in the early 1990s. These first generation digital systems consisted of a general purpose rack mounted microsystem hardware which was becoming unreliable and increasingly difficult to support. With planned environmental upgrades including the addition of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) ensuring compliance with the LCPD (Large Combustion Plant Directive) 2, E.ON required reliable and well supported excitation systems. As a result E.ON chose BRUSH PRISMIC A50 Excitation Systems to replace the four aging digital excitation systems at Ratcliffe Power Station. BRUSH delivered the first replacement excitation system to Ratcliffe in June 2008 - only 14 weeks after order placement. The PRISMIC A50 Excitation System was installed during a major plant outage with BRUSH engineers providing flexible site support to accommodate the changing site timetable typical of such outages. National Grid site acceptance testing was successfully completed in early September 2008. Each generator at Ratcliffe Power Station is equipped with a rotating 3 phase a.c. main exciter feeding the main generator field via a stationary rectifier. Each generator is also equipped with a 3 phase a.c. pilot exciter which supplies power for the main exciter. BRUSH provided three excitation control panels for each generator at Ratcliffe. One control panel contained an operator console and the pilot exciter excitation system. The additional control panels contained the dual redundant excitation controllers for the main exciter. All of the excitation system channels were supplied complete with separate control electronics and power converters arranged to enable switching between channels and facilitating easy disconnection and replacement of components if needed whilst the generator is online The system was designed to integrate the local power station d.c. battery supply, to provide backup excitation capability for the pilot exciter. The excitation system also includes an existing supplementary pilot exciter field winding connected in series with the main exciter field.

Key Points

Installed Units

Full compliance with E.ON specifications. Rapid design, manufacture, testing and delivery. Fast time into service using BRUSH engineers. Environmental protection to IP54. High reliability - no need for converter cooling fans. Common control system components used for both the pilot exciter and the main generator excitation systems reducing number of spare parts needed. Generator availability is increased by designing the control panel to enable easy disconnection and replacement standby system components whilst the generator remains online. The PRISMIC A50 has compact and elegant design requiring very few additional components allowing the control panel design to be kept simple and easy to maintain. The PRISMIC A50 includes all necessary firmware and application logic so that no additional microsystem or programmable logic controller is necessary. Easily accessible test points are provided to enable connection of 3rd party recording equipment. Remote support via modem link. Worldwide engineering support with engineers based in UK, Holland, Czech Republic, USA, and Australia.
