Aims & Objectives


The objective of the course is to introduce students to methods and strategies that will help them improve communication skills. Students will learn to organize ideas clearly and logically, and gain a better grasp of grammatical structures and mechanics of writing. Interpersonal skills will be enhanced by involving students in class discussions, debates and presentations

Marks Distribution:
Assignments + Class Quizzes + Project(s) + Presentation(s) Midterm Examination Final Examination 25% 25% 50%

Assignments:
Assignments would be assigned at least one week before the due date and must be submitted on or before due date. No late assignment will be accepted. Total of 6 assignments would be assigned during the semester. You have to be very careful while you are solving your assignment. Please do not try copy from someone else in order to avoid any problem at the end of the semester.

Class Quizzes:
To check the class performance, sudden death test or class quizzes would be taken in class throughout the semester. At least 4 quizzes would be taken during the semester. These quizzes have to be solved in the class and they would be of short duration. There would be no LATE submission or MAKEUP for these quizzes.

Course Title: Basic English (Course Code: HUM112)


Week 1. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 Topic to be Covered Introduction to the course and its objective. Diagnostic test to check proficiency in English language. After peer connection, answers to be discussed and further explanations provided Statement and Questions: Word order used in statement and questions. Subject-verb agreement and the use of connectors and transitions. Articles and Prepositions: The use of articles and prepositions to be explained through examples and related exercises Adjectives and paragraph writing: Use of adjectives, paragraph development, topic sentence. Effective paragraphs using suitable adjectives. Presentations: Presentations in class by students on assigned topics Simple past and present perfect: Related exercises to be done for reenforcement. Writing activity using simple past and present perfect tense. Oral communication skills: How to improve interpersonal skills, the use to visual aids, evaluation criterion for oral presentations. Effective listening Change of voice: Active, passive and practice exercises. Paragraph writing in the passive Mid Term Examinations Letter writing: Introduction to letter writing. Format of full-block and semiblock. Writing simple direct request letters Article Presentation: Students to do presentations in class based on articles selected from newspapers, followed by Qs.-Ans session Reading Comprehension: Techniques of picking out the main and supporting details from passages. Vocabulary building exercise Summary writing: Summary writing techniques, preparation of rough and fair draft. Practice exercises Inquiry letter: Correction letters, and writing simple letters of inquiry. Business vocabulary, indirect Qs Reading Comprehension and summary writing: Further practice in reading and summarizing Final Presentations: Group presentations based on research work, followed by question-answer session.
