TGA names its new Head
THE Department of Health and
Ageing has appointed Dr John
Skerritt as the new National
Manager of the Therapeutic Goods
Administration.
Dr Skerritt has a PhD in
Pharmacology, is an adjunct
Professor at the University of
Queensland, and is currently the
Deputy Secretary of the
Department of Primary Industries
in the Victorian Government.
With 25 years worth of
experience in negotiating, leading
major technical and commercial
collaborations with OECD and Asia-
Pacific countries, Skerritt has also
previously served as the Deputy
CEO of the Australian Centre for
International Agricultural Research,
and was a two term Ministerial
appointee on the Gene Technology
Technical Advisory Committee.
Dr Skerritt currently leads more
than 1200 staff (including 700
regulatory staff in two major
science-based regulatory Divisions)
and has more than 17 years
experience managing laboratory
programs and operations in
diagnostics, cell culture, biomedical
instrumentation, chemistry and
biochemistry, said Secretary of the
DoHA, Professor Jane Halton.
He also has recent experience in
the regulatory reform of veterinary
drugs and agrochemicals, which
includes chairing a national
committee of Commonwealth and
State Regulators, Halton added.
Skerritt will take up the role at the
TGA by the end of the month.
MEANWHILE, the new
appointment has been widely
welcomed by the industry.
Speaking in the wake of the
announcement, the
Complementary Healthcare Council
of Australias Executive Director, Dr
Wendy Morrow said we look
forward to continuing the open and
mature dialogue which exists
between Industry and the TGA, and
working closely with Dr Skerritt on
implementing appropriate TGA and
industry reforms.
With the TGA Blueprint
document, levels of evidence
consultation and other reviews
being completed or in varying
stages of implementation, Dr
Skerritts background in regulatory
reform will stand him in good stead
in his new role, she added.
Start the conversation
THE National Association of
People Living with HIV/AIDS, has
launched a campaign which aims at
getting sufferers of the disease to
talk to their healthcare providers
about the latest HIV treatments.
As such, the Australasian Society
for HIV Medicine has put together
a basic tool kit designed to help
health practitioners answer
questions and provide guidance on
the clinical management of HIV.
The campaign follows on from
the release of new treatment
guidelines, which recommend HIV
treatment for all people living with
HIV, whether the infection is recent
or longer term, based on growing
evidence that delaying treatment
can have serious health impacts.

The PCHR closes its doors
THE Pharmacist Coalition for
Health Reform (PCHR), made up of
The Pharmaceutical Society of
Australia (PSA), the Society of
Hospital Pharmacists (SHPA) and
the Pharmacists Division of the
Association of Professional
Engineers, Scientists and Managers
Australia (APESMA) has announced
it will no longer operate as an
entity, and that it will end its
existence from this week.
The PCHR launched to great
aplomb in June last year, with the
aim of generating awareness within
the healthcare sector, the
Government, and the general
public, of the skills and knowledge
that pharmacists can bring to the
healthcare table, and which could
be better utilised to improve the
health outcomes of all Australians.
Despite the conclusion of the
PCHR, the PSA, SHPA and APESMA
have said that they remain
committed to the goals of the
Pharmacy Coalition for Health
Reform and will continue to build
on efforts to ensure the pharmacy
profession is better recognised and
integrated into the wider health
care sector.
The partners will continue to
seek opportunities to work
collaboratively in areas where such
collaboration will help meet our
common goals and those of their
members, the trio said in a
statement.

DEAD tired.
A Polish construction worker,
Bartek Bablewski, was reported
dead to police, after he decided
to grab 40-winks in the backseat
of his car.
Apparently Bablewski so
resembled a corpse when he
slept that he concerned multiple
members of the public.
Id taken my shirt off because I
was hot and I always sleep with
my arms across my chest,
Bablewski told reporters.
The next thing I knew police
and paramedics were trying to
tear the door off my car.
It scared the life out of me,
he added.
Bablewski added that it was
not only he that got a fright, and
that when his corpse moved it
scared the life out of the
emergency response team.
CYBERSPACE leads to love.
It seems to be a sign of the
ever increasingly technologically
advanced times, when a British
couple, Marie and Jay Coulbeck,
chose to get engaged online
during a game, before having
ever met.
The duos avatars Goddess of
the Orient and Gunner
reportedly hit it off instantly in
the online chat room IMVU, and
an internet romance was born.
The pair got engaged in the
game months later, and it was
only after a ring was exchanged
online that they anxiously
decided to swap photos.
Their worry came from the fact
that their avatars did not entirely
match their real world
incarnations, however sighting
photos did not dim their love,
with the each saying that the
other was their absolute dream.
We actually think the game is
a bit silly now, but thank God we
both joined or we would never
have
found
each
other,
Jay said.
