BOARD OF DIRECTORS
President-Jan Bush
B-3 Contractors, Inc. belle@aptalaska.net

From the Presidents Desk:

It is May and Prince of Wales Island is ready to welcome visitors to its shores! The small tour ships will be arriving for a weekly visit from mid May until September. Artisans will display their POWmade wares, and visitors will leave with treasured souvenirs to remember their time among us. Our island itself is a treasure, recognized by the knowing as one of the rarest ecosystems on the Earth. We forget sometimes that our abundant rain feeds this treasure and keeps the temperate rainforest alive and well! The Chamber of Commerce chose to recognize this unique quality on the banners that will soon hang in six portals on Prince of Wales Island. Memorial Day weekend will bring many to the area to take part in the 13th Annual Marathon, inaugural Half Marathon and relay options. We welcome Alabamas Will Wright and hope that many will be at the CTA on Friday evening, May 25th, to hear this 75 year-olds amazing running saga! He will begin his story about 7:15 PM after the ferry arrives with the last of the participants. The Visitor Committee will meet on May 16th and then take the summer months off. More details are inside! Its time to lay out the welcome mats! Lets also make sure our visitors know how very special is the island we call home! Rebecca Chester took on the editing tasks for the May Newsletter. I am so grateful to have some hours back in my time bank for other pursuits, and for our two grandchildren! Rebecca and Sharon scour all sources for news to share, and for the dates to put on the last page calendar. Help make their search easier by sending your news and dates to the office! I think she has done an awesome job! Congratulations, Rebecca!

The Marathon banner has been hung over the highway in Craig, refreshed with the newly copyrighted Raven and Shoe logo! We thank our AP&T line crew for hanging the banner and for the design on the posters and participant shirts. AP&Ts Mark McCready is once again the creative force behind the new logo. A huge thanks to Alaska Marine Lines for contributing the freight for the numerous items that have been ordered to improve the event. All the pieces are coming together and our friends at Alaska Marine Lines have made it possible!
..That a MARATHON is 26.2 miles and 385 yards. The word and that oddly specific distance date back to the 490 BC battle of Marathon, Greece, in which the Greeks defeated the Persians. A messenger carried news of the victory to Athens across some 26 miles. Centuries later, in the 1896 Olympics, the footrace debuted and adopted the name marathon in honor of the runner. 4

Sharon and I have completed taking inventory and the back room has been cleaned and organized! We have been experiencing some computer problems in the office and with that, this month has seen some real challenges for us. While doing inventory of the items in the back room we came across many vintage items that we are selling. We have Alaska Logger red suspenders for $10.00 each, they are a hot item and going very fast! Vintage logging show T-shirts and other vintage shirts-adult sizes are $6.00 each or 2 for $10.00, children sizes (logging show only) are $4.00 each. We have some vintage logging show volunteer hats$4.50 each. Please stop in and take a look at these and pick up an item for your relative that already has one of everything! Check out the website CLASSIFIED ADS page for sale to see these items.

Fish halibut, salmon and bottom fish with Capt. Lee Harper. Walk-ons welcome, reservations encouraged. Call now to guarantee your spot in the Silver Talon. We'll see you in Coffman Cove this summer! In efforts to help out our President Janice Bush, I have taken over the POWer News-

letter. WOW, thank you Jan for doing that for all these years. Many hours go into this, and it is much more than throwing some pretty words on a piece of paper. It is not to say that she has completely handed this project off. It is with her continued assistance and guidance that this newsletter is possible! Please send me your dates, meeting updates, and any other information you would like to go into the newsletter. Send this information to the office at info@princeofwalescoc.org. For the month of April 2012, Guides went to Michigan, Illinois, Montana, Washington, Arizona, Oregon, Idaho, and Colorado; in Alaska to Juneau and Anchorage. We still have 116 boxes of guides for a total of 8,700, and that is 1,275 less than last month! USFS maps of POW went to California, Idaho, Washington, and Utah. Featured photographer this month is Don Busse!

I recently completed 11 miles in my training for the 2012 Prince of Wales International Marathon! I ran all the way from Hemlock Street in Klawock to JT Brown Street in Craig and back! If I can do that then I know I can run the marathon, but the challenge will be running it after I work 8 hours! Also for the month of April I have a personal best of a total of 75.6 miles completed! If you see me out there running PLEASE give me a honk or a wave, you will never know how much this encourages me when I dont think I can go on anymore! This has been a busy spring so far. Last week, a floating netpen complex was towed from a dock in Port Saint Nick Bay all the way to the Klawock River estuary, and 6 anchors were set to position this unit. Thanks go out to Ken Quigley for allowing us to store the complex at his dock this past year! As well, thanks go out to Karl Demmert, and his use of the F/V Christopher David, for towing the complex, and setting the anchors! Many of you who live in the Craig/Klawock area have already seen this netpen complex, I'm sure! As you drive across the Klawock River bridge, you will be able to see this new system in the estuary. There is a red buoy that marks the position of each of the 6 anchors. In addition, we have deployed a transfer pipeline, 400 feet long, that runs from the shoreline out to the complex. (This pipeline is actually 8 sections of pipe, each 50 feet long, that are bolted together via flanges.) We will bring transfer truckloads of coho smolts from Klawock Lake to this pipeline (located at the Boom City Fireworks site) and deliver these fish to the netpens. Each net is 40 feet by 40 feet, and 18 feet deep. There are a total of 6 pens, so there's room for close to 1 million fish.

Primary care clinic serving residents and visitors of Prince of Wales. State of art medical, diagnostic and x-ray equipment; telemedicine; visiting specialists; During the month of May, we intend to feed these fish well, in order to attain home healthcare. extra growth. The estuary water should be warmer than Klawock Lake, so the
fish are expected to put on extra weight during this time. When the fish are released on June 1st, they will be heaver and larger than their cohorts, which stayed in the lake.

The transfer pipeline will only be in the water for as long as it takes to move the fish into the netpens, perhaps a couple of weeks. There will be a red buoy marking the location of each pipeline flange, every 50 feet. I wanted to inform as many boaters as possible of this situation. Boating will still be possible between this complex and Klawock Island (Klawock Island is west of the complex) but due to the presence of this pipeline, boating will be obstructed east of the complex.

The BEST place to stay in Craig, Alaska just got better!

The complex will be equipped with several small flashing lights, which will come on automatically from dusk to dawn, making the location of the complex obvious for anyone boating at night. Rearing cohos in saltwater netpens during their final weeks has resulted in increased survival of smolts, and greater production of coho adults. Our goal with the coho program is to maximize the production of coho adults, for the common property fishery, as well as for hatchery cost recovery opportunity.

Water Street Apartments is Under New Management! Short-term and Extended stay apartment rentals For Reservations and more information please call

907-826-2298
Or visit our website by following the link on the accommodations page of the Chamber Website!

I have a permit from the Department of Natural Resources, as well as the Army Corps of Engineers, to use this complex every spring, for the purpose described above. I wanted everyone to understand that this use is for only two months each spring. After the cohos are released on June 1st, the nets will be removed, washed, and stored, and all the anchors will be pulled, and the entire complex will be towed out of the estuary, and stored on a beach. The coho complex will therefore be long gone by the time the sockeye return, and subsistence fishing gets underway. If anyone has questions about this new coho rearing strategy, give us a call, or stop by the hatchery. Or you can email me, and I'll do my best to address everyone's concerns. Daniel F. FARMERS MARKET EVENTS BEGIN IN MAY

Submitted by Budd Burnett

ISLAND TO ISLAND VETERINARY SERVICE

907-617-8389
QUALITY AND COMPASSIONATE CARE FOR YOUR PETS

Island to Island Veterinary Service would like to remind you this is a great time to schedule a physical exam for your four legged buddy!

The Farmers Market Advisory Committee hired Brenda Sinclair as its manager to organize an oversee market events that will be held across the Island from May through September. The hiring took place at the Advisory Committees last meeting April 6 in Thorne Bay. Brenda is from Coffman Cove and is a very energetic person and she hit the ground running so to speak. She is doing a terrific job and is presently working on this years first Farmer's Market event that will be held in Craig on May 26 during the POW Marathon. One key to making the Farmers Market events a success is attracting vendors. There is a misconception out there that only specialty foods and produce are sold at the markets. Actually, vendors can sell games, crafts, arts, veggies, home made bread, cookies, etc. Vendors do have to a pay $10 per day fee for a table in a tent, or if they want to rent the whole tent, the fee is $30 per day and that includes two tables. A vendor can bring his/her own tent, but will still have to pay a $10 per day fee. Vendor applications, policies and procedures are available on the website. The Advisory Committees next meeting will be held in Craig on May 4 at the Community Connections Conference Room from 10 am to 12 noon. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. The Farmers Market now has its own website: www.powfarmersmarket.com and Brenda has a new email: manager@powfarmersmarket.com.

ISLAND WIDE VISITORS COMMITTEE

Submitted by Jeannie McFarland
Advertising for Island Events Heather Hedges reported that she was contacted by Alaska Magazine and offered a free full page ad for the Rainforest Island Ferry in the June/July issue. The ad space would have cost $5,770.00. In the ad she included the schedule of the Farmers Markets on the Island which gave our whole Island the visibility it needs. The Summer Tour Boat Traffic to Prince of Wales Island has increased with the addition of the Alaskan Dream from Allen Marine. The InnerSeas Discovery Boats will be stopping in Klawock and at the El Cap Caves again this year. The first date for the Discovery boats will be May 7th in Klawock and the Alaskan Dream May 18th in Thorne Bay and Kassan. US Forest Service Upcoming Activities and plans Maeve Taylor, Recreation & New Thorne Bay Ranger, Kent Nicholson Many projects will be moving forward this summer, they include; Construction of 3 sided shelters at Memorial Beach and Winter Harbor, A recycling program in partnership with the Craig Tribal Association at the day use sites of Gravely Creek and Sandy Beach, Historical restoration on a maintenance level for the Salmon Bay Lake Cabin while more studies are done, replacement of the outhouse at the Balls Lake picnic area and work on phase 2 of the Sunnahae Trail mainly by the 3 crews of YCC workers. El Cap Cave Tours are available 6 days a week this summer and the interpretive guide will be at Dog Salmon Creek in Polk Inlet in July and August. Please be aware there is a detour that begins at the Staney Creek turn off for those wanting to go to Naukati and North due to road construction. You can still get to the Coffman Cove turn off but the road is closed beyond there to Sarkar. Melissa Cady gave a presentation the Nature of Bird Watching on April the 21st, at the Craig Ranger District. The program is for interested birders over 15 years of age or anyone wanting to add bird watching to their lodge offerings. Melissa is available to make presentations at other times and can be contacted at the Craig Ranger District to set up a schedule. The Rainforest Islander is the name of the ferry purchased by the North end Port Authority to start operation in late July of this year. A Refit proposal will be accepted soon for the vessel that will handle 275 tons of freight and has a capacity of 70 passengers and 14 vehicles. Top speed of the vessel is 23knots. Information on the vessel and the progress to meet the July sailing date is available on the website www.rainforestislandferry.com. Updates from the IFA No one was available to attend the meeting. Discussion about the project Dennis Watson, interim manager had started to clear and reorganize the parking area were positive. All agreed he is the right person to get some much needed work done. Work on the DVD will begin again with the opportunity to take the final helicopter flights for the rest of the Island. A script is needed to give Fred an outline of what video footage and still photos to use for each community. Communities can send that information to Jim McFarland, alpfhafloatel@starband.net. . The committee is planning to have the DVD ready for presentation at the Southeast Conference in September. Funds are still needed to pay for production. Next Meeting: Wednesday, May 16th at St. Johns in Klawock. Meeting starts at 11AM to 2PM. Contact Jeannie: floatel@starband.net, 907-828-3335 for an Agenda prior to the meeting.

POW VOC TEC CENTER UPDATE

Submitted by Karen Cleary, Project Director

Joann Lott of Jensen Yorba Lott presented the proposed building schematic design via GoToMeeting to the POW V&T Advisory Committee at the April 16th meeting. At the April 23rd meeting, the design subcontractors (civil, mechanical, and structural engineers) presented their specific parts of the schematic design which were discussed by all. The groups suggestions will be incorporated into the final schematic design which JYL will provide by May 1, and the V&T Advisory group will consider at the next meeting on May 7. The project is on schedule to have the site prep work bid out on June 1 and the site prep work completed by the end of September 2012. The needs assessment survey collection is complete and will be collated and analyzed through May with the final report scheduled for June. The results of this survey will drive the curriculum design and will enable us to focus our efforts on the training most needed for POW. The next POW V&T Advisory Committee meeting is Monday, May 7 at 2:00 pm in the Klawock City Council Chambers. Joann Lott of JYL will present the final schematic design of the facility via GoToMeeting.

FOREST PRODUCTS TASK FORCE

Submitted by Karen Peterson The POW Forest Products Task Force met on Friday the 27th of April. We had 16 attendees, including 3 people on the phone. One of the phone attendees was Sue Tyler from Hoonah. Our task force is attracting the interest of others around the State! We had two agenda items: Pat Palcovic talked about the State Forestry plan. She said that they are focusing only on large sales right now since the Forest Service seems to be handling the small sales. They have two larger sales right now - to Viking and Harrison. They plan on putting 15 million board feet up for sale on POW next year (more than the 8mmbf from the USFS). Questions were posed by some small operators about "micro" style sales, and Pat said she could do those on an individual basis. Pat did say that as soon as Viking is done logging Indian Creek, they would be pulling the bridges. We had some discussion about fire wood cutters, and she said because of fish windows they did not have much time. She would try and contact the community of Hollis to let them know this - although she is trying to work out something to let people go in while Papac is still logging. Wade Zammit from Sealaska gave a presentation on what he was calling the "SE Working Forest Initiatives". This was a powerpoint that went pretty fast, but his point was that there was not much Old Growth left, and the Young Growth that would be available was still too young to harvest. This inventory has come out of the JEDC Cluster work, and he hopped back and forth between total acres available and Forest Service acres available so I am not really comfortable with the numbers for these notes. I do have a print out of his powerpoint if anyone is interested. There were two other topics that came up. One was that Linda Snow from Juneau Economic Development was looking for suggestions for scientific research to be done. If you have any suggestions send her an e-mail at lsnow@jedc.org The other topic was that Ted Sandoffer from the Forest Service said that the next three Forest Service small sales would be Stewardship Contracts. There will be two workshops to educate people on how to apply for these Stewardship Contracts. Our next meeting will take place after these meetings are held.
