Socialisolationandlonelinessarekeychallengesforanageingpopulation, particularlyinthecontemporaryerawhenfamiliesmigrateacrosstheworld andwheretherearestarkdifferencesincommunitysupportivenessboth withinandacrossworldregions.Yetthereisgrowingevidenceofolderadults placeinfosteringcommunitycohesionandproductivityandofarangeof responsesaimedatintegratingandsupportingolderpeople.Muchof communityvitalitycanbecreditedtoolderpeoplethemselves,andinvolves understandinghowolderpeopleactivelycontributetocommunities. However,knowledgegapsalsoremaininourunderstandingofwhicholder adultsareatriskofexclusionfromsocialrelationships,materialresourcesand communitysettingsthatenhancequalityoflifeandwhicharemostlikelyto bemarginalized. Thisspecialissueaimstoexplorethisdiversityofolderpersonsandofthe communitiesinwhichtheylivebyestablishingadialoguebetweensocial/ communitypsychologyandsocialgerontology.Inparticular,wewantto examinehowspecificcommunityarrangementscanhelpfulfilanumberof socialpsychologicalfunctionssuchasidentitymaintenance,qualityoflifeand relationalwellbeingandallowforamoreempoweringsocialrepresentation ofageingandofolderpeople.Reciprocally,wewillwelcomepapersthatcan helpustounderstandbetterthesocialpsychologicalfactors,suchas stereotypesbetweenhistoricalgenerations,thatcanhinderorpromotethe developmentofagefriendlycommunitiesbetheyunderstoodintheformal contextoftheWHOsponsoredinitiativeorinlessformalarrangements.We willalsowelcomemanuscriptsthatexploreinnovativeresearchmethodsto studyageinginsocialandcommunitypsychology.Manuscriptsfromallworld regionsarewelcome.
