Arjun Suri Mrs. Goodson English 2 Honors / 4th Period 2 May 2011 Terror In Auschwitz I. Introduction A. You read a sign which states Auschwitz Concentration Camp, your new home. There's a light in front of you and there's black smoke flowing into the air above it. You've heard of the rumors of what lies ahead of you but you never imagined it to be so depressing. You look at those who are directing you to move forward in the line, they look like yourself. The only difference is you are a Jew. B. Auschwitz was the worst experience for anyone who attended the camp, it's presence terrorized millions of people and the events which occurred in the building were devastating. II. When Auschwitz was planned in the 1930's it was meant to be a normal sized camp, but once it was finally built in 1942, it was the largest camp in the world. A. The camp is located 37 miles west from the German- Polish border in Krakow, it's easy to transport people there. 1. The Nazis wanted to find a remote vast area for the camps. 2. Since the camp was so far away, the German citizens had no idea that the Jews were being killed. B. The first prisoners were German criminals, along with Polish political criminals.

1. The Nazis wanted to have people believe that if they had German criminals go to the camps it wouldn't seem as though they were committing genocide amongst Jews. 2. The Polish political criminals were placed in to save room for their own prisons. III. There was three reasons to have this camp, to incarcerate enemies, have supply of forced laborers, and genocide of racial groups. A. There was always 15,000 to 20,000 plus prisoners at all times. 1. Since they were trying to commit genocide they had to keep the death rate high along with the amount of Jews in the camp. 2. They couldn't have more than 20,000 prisoners in the camp because it was already overflowing. B. When arriving to the camp, there were two lines, one was for strong men, and the other were for unfit men, females, elderly, and children. 1. The Nazis wanted strong men to work in the camp, so they could have forced laborers. 2. Those who weren't strong were placed into the crematorium right away. IV. Dr. Joseph Mengele was the head of science experiments, they would conduct strange experiments on prisoners. A. The experiments consisted of twins, dwarfs, sterilizations, castrations, and hypothermia. 1. Dr. Mengele later moved to South America and created a town which had a plethora of twins.

2. They would perform these deadly experiments on Jews, since they believed that they weren't human anyway. B. There was a gas chamber inside the basement of the building, it was called Block 11. 1. The chamber was later relocated outside, to have a larger one. 2. The gas chamber inside of the building was still used even though the outside one was built. V. The Concentration Camp would sometimes have to accept more people to live in the camp, since the crematorium was too overcrowded. A. The Jews were stripped of their clothes, had their heads shaven, and received tattoos of their kapo numbers. 1. They would shave the Jews hair, and later created the camp clothes from their hair. 2. They were known by numbers, since it was easier to kill someone who had lost all respect, including their name. B. There was a Black wall in the basement in between the experimental room, and the gas chamber. It is called the black wall since many people were brutally murdered against it. 1. The wall was used to kill many people whether it be by gunfire or by beatings. 2. They would also kill the experiments against this wall. VI. The average life of anyone who lived in the camps were about three to five months, this shows how badly the Jews were treated by the Nazis. A. Everyday about 6,000 people were killed in the camp itself. 1. This consisted of Jews and others. 2. If you didn't have blond hair and blue eyes you were targeted by Nazis.

B. By the end of the war, Auschwitz had the record of 1.3 to 1.5 million deaths in the gas chamber only. 1. This is a rather large number, the total of all camps was 6 million Jews. 2. The gas chamber was their method of killing since it didn't cause smoke to be in the air. VII. Conclusion A. Auschwitz was the worst experience for anyone who attended the camp, it's presence terrorized millions of people and the events which occurred in the building were devastating. B. The events which occurred in Auschwitz were horrible, they ranged from criminating people to killing them in gas chambers, to the extent of even experimenting on them. C. Auschwitz was the deadliest camp ever created, it is world renowned for its devastating history. It all could have ended if only we stepped in at the beginning.
