Conference Presenters

Cynthia Hetherington, MLS, MSM, CFE has more than 18 years of experience in research, investigations, and corporate intelligence. She is the founder of Hetherington Group, a consulting, publishing, and training firm focusing on intelligence, security, and investigations. Cynthias experience includes establishing and leading of Aon Consultings Corporate Strategic Intelligence Group. Cynthia applies her expertise in library science and information systems to provide clients with strategic insight into research and complex investigations. During her career, she has assisted a vast number of clients with Internet investigations related to employee theft and intellectual property loss. Cynthia has also applied her research skills while conducting online and database research to uncover well-hidden relations between fraudulent associates, their assets, and their secrets. She has experience overseeing international investigations for Fortune 500 companies and other organizations in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

A widely published author, Cynthia authored Business Background Investigations (2007) and the Manual to Online Public Records (2008), published by Facts on Demand Press. She is the publisher of Data2know.com: Internet & Online Intelligence Newsletter and has co-authored articles on steganography, computer forensics, Internet investigations, and other securityfocused monographs. She is also recognized for providing corporate security officials; military intelligence units; and federal, state, and local agencies with training on online intelligence practices. Cynthias classes are ACFE, NASBA, DHS and ASIS approved for continuing professional education credits. J. Nick Augustine, J.D., Principal of Pro Serve PR Marketing, practices litigation public relations for law firms in Chicagoland and Southern California. Nick earned his communications and rhetorical studies degree from Marquette University and his law degree from The John Marshall Law School where he sits on the Alumni Association Board. Regarding litigation public relations and strategy, he is national speaker and weekly columnist, writing for several major publications including Chicago Lawyer Magazine. Additionally, Nick produces and hosts several Internet radio programs as well as educational workshops and seminars.

Andrea D. Lyon is a clinical professor of law, associate dean of Clinical Programs, and director of the Center for Justice in Capital Cases. Lyon received her undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and her law degree from Antioch School of Law. After graduating, she worked for the Cook County Public Defenders Office in the felony trial division, post-conviction/habeas corpus unit, preliminary hearing/first municipal (misdemeanor) unit and the appeals division. Her last position there was chief of the Homicide Task Force, a 22-lawyer unit representing persons accused of homicides. She has tried over 130 homicide cases, both while in the Public Defenders Office and since. She has defended more than 30 potential capital cases at the trial level and has taken 19 through penalty phase; she won all 19. In 1990, she founded the Illinois Capital Resource Center and served as its director until joining the University of Michigan Law School faculty as an assistant clinical professor in 1995. A winner of the prestigious National Legal Aid and Defender Associations Reginald Heber Smith Award for best advocate for the poor in the country, she is a nationally recognized expert in the field of death penalty defense and a frequent continuing legal education teacher throughout the country. In 1998, she was awarded the Justice for All Award at the National Conference on Wrongful Convictions and the Death Penalty. In 2003, she received the lifetime achievement award from the Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. In 2005, she received the presidents commendation from the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers for her death penalty work.

National Association of Legal Investigators - Presenters - 45th Annual Conference 2012 Thomas Green founded Dynamic Safety Inc. in 1997. With a degree in mechanical engineering and extensive hands-on experience in automotive systems analysis, diagnosis and repair, he has more than 20 years of experience investigating and reconstructing collisions. During that time, he has disassembled, inspected, tested and analyzed virtually every vehicle system in hundreds of crash vehicles ranging from passenger cars to heavy vehicles to ATVs. He is also an adjunct faculty instructor at the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, holds a patent for a Safety Vehicular Fuel System and has spoken at numerous conferences. Plus, Mr. Green has written an SAE technical paper and co-authored two chapters in the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety textbook Traffic Crash Reconstruction.

Todd A. Thorne is currently working in both the law enforcement and private communities. Todd is well versed in Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, Forensic Photography, Evidence Processing Techniques as well as Crime Scene Reconstruction. He is also a Latent Fingerprint Examiner. Todd has a variety of published articles and photographs in these disciplines. Todd has been working in the field of criminalistics for over 25 years and continually offers expert testimony/consultation. He is a certified State of Wisconsin and Illinois Instructor and has served on staff with the Nebraska Institute of Forensic Science. Todd is a sought after speaker and is an adjunct instructor in the area of Forensic Science for several colleges through out the country. In addition, he has served on Wisconsins Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Evidence Training Team. Todd has been a member of the Federal Governments U.S. Department of Homeland Security, serving with the DMORT V Disaster Response Unit. He operates Todd A. Thorne & Associates Forensic Consultants and Photography Services, LLC, which has exposed him to both national and international cases. Todd instructs throughout the country for The Lynn Peavey Company and has been called upon for technical consultation/research by various entities.

Joseph P. Buckley, CRT - Joe is a graduate of Loyola University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, has a Master of Science degree in the detection of deception, and is certified in The Reid Technique(R). He has been employed by John E. Reid and Associates since 1971 and has been president of the company since 1982. Joe has conducted in excess of 10,000 interviews and interrogations and has been a speaker in the seminars for over 35 years. Joe is a frequent guest on many radio talk shows, TVs McNeil-Lehrer, 60 Minutes and a much sought-after guest speaker for police and security organizations throughout the country, discussing the art of interrogation and interviewing. He has authored numerous articles on the topic, and is also co-author of the books, Criminal Interrogation and Confessions, (5th edition, 2011), The Investigator Anthology (2001), and Essentials of The Reid Technique: Criminal Interrogation and Confessions (2004). Joes vast knowledge of interviewing and interrogation procedures has made him one of the foremost authorities on investigative tactics and techniques in the law enforcement and security field today.

Jed Stone is a criminal defense lawyer in Waukegan, Illinois. For over thirty-five years, Jed has defended persons charged with serious crimes. He has earned a nation-wide reputation as an outstanding advocate. A Fellow of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers, Jed and his firm are also listed in the Bar Register of Pre-eminent Lawyers. He is listed as a Leading Lawyer in the areas of criminal defense and appellate law. Jed holds a faculty appointment at Lake Forest College where he teaches criminal law and procedure. Crains Chicago Business recently called Jed one of Chicagos most influential lawyers. The Chicago Lawyer has named him a top lawyer in Illinois. Jed has served as a president of the Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and chaired the Illinois Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.
