Quote of the Month

Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need have a present wit: and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not. --Francis Bacon

FROM THE DIRECTOR

The 2012 Hurricane season begins June 1 and continues until November 30. While weve not experienced any significant hurricanes since 2005, we need to be prepared and expect the unexpected. This also might be the time for you to invest in a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio that will operate on batteries or from an electrical outlet. Youll get weather alerts 24 hours a day and it is a very handy item to have. The Library has one and we use it year round, especially to alert us for stormy weather. Make sure that you are ready for our tropical storm season. During the month of April we offered a special deal to our patrons who had outstanding fines and overdue books. In recognition of National Library Week, we declared April to be Fine-Free Month. Many people took advantage of our offer and returned their library materials or checked in with us to have their fines removed. Thank you to all our patrons who took advantage of this offer. Our Book, Bake, and Plant Sale held at the end of April was a great success. We sold many books, goodies, and plants. Thanks to all the Friends of the Library and Claybank Master Gardeners who worked for months to get everything ready. Their hard work really paid off. Our Summer Reading Program starts Wednesday, June 6th at 2:00. You may register your child or grandchild from now until May 31st. This years theme is Dream Big Read. We will have programs about dreams, hopes, and wishes, and youll have the opportunity to think about what you want to be when you grow up! Well end with a Pajama Party. Youll find a registration form and a schedule of events in this newsletter. Join us for a fun-filled time. For other happenings at the Library, visit us on the web at www.odcpl.com. BOOK SALE AREA Our Friends Book Sale Area is open whenever the Library is open, and the offerings are updated every week. You may also note some carts at the entrance of the Library with books and videos for sale. Our selection is wide and were sure you will find something that will please you and at a reasonable price.

FROM THE CREEL RICHARDSON ROOM by Jocelyn Rayford In the Genealogy Room, Ancestry.com is available upon request. For those unacquainted with researching on this site or on a computer, help is available. Usually, those new to the site become comfortable with it very quickly. Of interest to experienced Ancestry researchers is the 1940 census that Ancestry.com has made available. However, if looking for a person who comes from a very populated area such as New York, New York, information is still limited. We have the Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses, 1790-1920 by William Thorndale and William Dollarhide. This can tell the researcher which censuses are not available for each state, and which lands belonged to Native Americans during census periods. This could be helpful to those researching their Native American origins. Also, helpful is The Dawes Commission and the Allotment of the Five Civilized Tribes 1893-1914 by Kent Carter. This book was provided by Llewellyn Jones who is researching the Evans, Hext, Jones and William Families; her phone number is available. Also, from Ms. Jones are the Directory of Scots Banished to the American Plantations 1650-1775, and Scots in the West Indies 1707-1857 Volume I, both by David Dobson. Scots in Georgia and the Deep South 1735-1845, is also authored by David Dobson. Scottish Family History, A Guide to Works of Reference on the History and Genealogy of Scottish Families was written by Margaret Stuart. A Topographical Dictionary of Scotland by Samuel Lewis is a helpful reference. Each book comprises Several Counties, Islands, Cities, Burgh and Market Towns, Parishes and Principal Villages with Historical and Statistical Descriptions, and Embellished with Engravings of the Seals and Arms of the Different Burghs and Universities. The first edition of this set was published in 1846, the second edition in 1851, reprinted in the U.S. in 1989.
