CLEVELAND- Every parent wants their child to succeed in school. They hope to give them every opportunity to succeed in life. We know that a good quality of life that we hope for our kids is going to be determined by the quality of their education they receive. It is important that every student, whether in elementary school, high school or college; be aware of the basics of being a good student. These skills, of doing well in school, can be carried over to many other aspects of life. The qualities of a good student are going to have a great impact to determine the student's bright academic future and career....Page 8

CLEVELAND-The problem plaguing America today --- job loss --was not caused by immigrants. But immigrants could be the solution. Immigrants are Americas secret weapon --- they are the job-creators. Recent research confirms what many of us see in our daily experience. Immigrants, those who embrace risk and hardship to start a new life in the New World, are twice as likely as native-born to launch a new business, whether its a small restaurant bringing new vitality to a neighborhood corner or a tech business in Silicon Valley, where over 50% of the businesses were founded by immigrants (think Google, Intel, YouTube, PayPal, eBay, Yahoo!). In American cities across the country, Hispanic immigrants are leading the way in launching new businesses. There are now 2.8 million Hispanic owned companies, generating over $400 billion in sales, carrying a $65 billion payroll, and employing over 2.2 million people. Depopulating cities like Detroit and Cleveland would do well to welcome Hispanic and other immigrant families to launch new businesses, Page 4

recommends staff layoffs, employee separation plan and facility relocation to address $66 million deficit Cleveland, Ohio The Board of Education of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District is considering a number of options for addressing the districts $66 million deficit, including recommendations in three key areas presented to them at the Boards regular meeting by Chief Executive Officer Eric Gordon. While our Academic Transformation strategies continue to drive our work, we are exploring options to address our fiscal challenges, said Gordon. This does not mean we have to stop working toward these goals, even as we make difficult choices. Scenarios shared with the Board include Reductions in Force, implementation of an employee separation plan and a master facilities relocation study, three of six areas the CEO said would allow the district to meet its legal requirement to enter 2012 fiscal year without a budget deficit. Solutions to our ongoing budget crisis demand not only public accountability but also adherence to a pledge to resolve CMSDs academic and fiscal problems not with temporary fixes, but with long-term, sustainable strategies, said Gordon. In the last two years, CMSD has cut $117 million from its budget in ways the CEO said have affected staff and operations in every area of the school system. Recommendations presented to the Board this evening included: A reduction of at least 600 teachers and at least 50 members of the districts support staff.

Elected as a National Democratic Delegate of the 13th district for the National Democratic Convention for President Obama. The Democratic and Republican parties in each state have their own rules for selecting delegates. Richard Romero was a National Delegate for President Bill Clinton in 1992.
By: Vocero Latino staff Richard Romero of Lorain Ohio was elected as a National Democratic Delegate of the 13th district to go to the National Democratic Convention for President Obama. A delegate to the Democratic National Convention has a huge responsibility of supporting and representing their district at the convention. He or she will be voting on behalf of thousands of people in his party from a particular district on who will be the presidential candidate. Richard Romero was a National Delegate for President Bill Clinton in 1992. How Delegates are Chosen in Ohio. Specific rules for selecting delegates vary by party and state. The Democratic and Republican parties in each state have their own rules for selecting delegates. In general, someone who is interested in becoming a delegate should register at the state party headquarters for the political party of their choice. If you register to be a delegate, you may also have to state a candidate preference, as many delegates are pledged to vote for a particular candidate. Delegates are then chosen at various tiers of political party conventions, starting at the precinct or district level, then proceeding, in many cases, to the county level and finally the state level, in which national convention delegates are chosen. In addition to pledged delegates who get involved with their local political party organizations, both parties have persons who are automatically delegates by virtue of their elected office or position in the parties. Governors and members of Congress from each party, for example, serve as delegates for their parties and states at the national conventions. News reports on the 2008 campaign referred to these delegates as "superdelegates." The parties have superdelegates so that party activists and elected officials have some influence in choosing their parties' presidential nominees. Charlotte is excited to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention the week of September 3, 2012. The Democratic National Convention Committee is a not-for-profit organization responsible for planning and executing the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, the week of September 3, 2012. The DNCC has committed to performing 2012 hours of service to the Charlotte community in the months leading up to the convention.

By Richard Romero 25% say the same for the Republican Partya Democratic advantage of 37 percentage points. Latino voters have moved sharply into the Democratic camp in the past two years, reversing a pro-GOP tide. According to the Census Bureau, 50.5 million Hispanics were counted by the 2010 Census, up from 35.3 million in 2000. Over the same decade, the number of Latino eligible votersadults who are U.S. citizensalso increased, from 13.2 million in 2000 to 21.3 million in 2010. In 2010, 31.3% of Latino eligible voters were ages 18 to 29, while 19.2% of white, 25.6% of black, and 20.7% of Asian eligible voters were under 30. Family and pocketbook issues, such as education (93%), the cost of living (92%), jobs (91%) and health care (90%), are most important to Hispanic registered voters. Fewer Hispanics say that crime (82%), the war in Iraq (75%), or immigration (75%) are extremely important or very important issues to them personally. The Pew Hispanic survey also reveals that, heading into the 2012 presidential campaign, Obama and the Democratic Party continue to enjoy strong support from Latino registered voters, but they shouldnt take it for granted. Most Latinos dont like the anti- immigrant rhetoric in this election. Latinos are hardworking family people that are helping our U.S. economy. Because Latinos do not like the way immigration reform has been handled by some candidates, Latinos will be motivated to vote and participate in this upcoming important election. All elections are local, and the Northeast Ohio Latinos will come together and show that we come together when needed. Getting the local Latino community involved and organized for this campaign will be the key to how big the turn out could be. So lets not wait to be invited to show our support for Obama. Consider this our invitation. Recently the Cleveland Latino Community had a Tu Decides rally to register and get out the Latino Vote. This event took place Saturday April 21st at Saigon Plaza (5400 Detroit Avenue). Theres a plan to organize a campaign in Lorain, which will register Latinos and get them out to vote. Its time to show how important the Latino Community Ohio will be in this presidential election. Tu Voto Es Tu Voz so let your voices be heard. Sondhe, a successful entrepreneur from India, who first came to America in the 1960s to study polymer chemistry at the University of Akron. Sondhe, who now lives comfortably in the Cleveland area after recently selling his road-surfacing technology company to Dow Chemical (also a company founded by an immigrant, Herbert Henry Dow, who studied chemistry in northeast Ohio generations ago), knows something is special about the combination of immigrants and the American Dream. They go hand in hand. "Immigrants are those with the starkest sense of how this country differs from all others, and their very belief in that difference makes it -- partly -- come true," writes James M. Jasper, author of "Restless Nation: Starting Over in America." Driven by an unshakable vision of a land of opportunity, often described by Ronald Reagan as a "shining city on the hill," immigrants bring the American Dream with them. In the process, the hardy new arrivals continually renew the country's belief that the dream exists and is attainable to all, regardless of who you are or where you start, through hard work, perseverance and appreciation of the freedom and opportunities that are abundant in America. Renowned chef and Chicago restauranteur Generoso Bahena, an immigrant from Mexico and master of the moles, said that upon first arriving in the U.S., I found myself in the middle of nowhere and I had to prove to myself that I could do something. Every day we see immigrants who came with nothing achieving great things. If they can do it, so can I, we say to ourselves. Or should. The immigrants themselves become evangelists for the dream, preaching to anyone who will listen that America is the promised land for those eager to develop their full potential. And the dream becomes contagious. Without a fervent, and sometimes delusionary, reverence for the dream, America loses much of what makes it so special. When those with a crazy dream stop coming to America, or are being kicked out or marginalized, more of the pixels of the shining dream begin to fade. Still looking to regain our footing after the Great Recession, America needs to get its swagger back. To do that, we have to embrace the Dream-Keepers. Echoing that observation, author and historian Harold Evans observed in his book They Made America: "it is commonly said that these later immigrants brought their dreams. In fact, they brought ours."

With the newest Census data out about the Latino community in the U.S., theres no question how important the Latino vote will be in this election. The Latino community in Ohio knows how important this election will be and understands what this election means to our community. Latinos in Ohio are not waiting for anyone to ask us to get involved. We are going to take it upon ourselves to do whatever we need to do in order to get President Obama re-elected. Hispanics voted for Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden over Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin by a margin of more than two-to-one in the 2008 presidential election (67% versus 31%, according the Pew Hispanic Center of exit polls from Edison Media Research as published by CNN). Nationally, all Latino demographic sub-groups voted for Obama by heavy margins. According to the national exit poll, 64% of Hispanic males and 68% of Hispanic females supported Obama. Latino youth, just as all youth nationwide, supported Obama over McCain by a lopsided margin 76% versus 19%. In an election year when voter participation rose across the board, Latinos increased their share of the national vote to 9% from 8% in 2004 according to the national exit poll. Nationwide, the Latino vote was significantly more Democratic this year than in 2004, when President Bush captured an estimated 40% of the Hispanic vote, a modern high for a Republican presidential candidate. The new survey also reveals that the Democratic Party continues to hold a large advantage over the Republican Party in party identification among Latino registered voters. More than 62% of Latino registered voters say they identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party. Only

The problem plaguing America today --- job loss --- was not caused by immigrants. But immigrants could be the solution. Immigrants are Americas secret weapon --they are the job-creators. There are now 2.8 million Hispanic owned companies, generating over $400 billion in sales, carrying a $65 billion payroll, and employing over 2.2 million people. Depopulating cities like Detroit and Cleveland would do well to welcome Hispanic and other immigrant families to launch new businesses, renovate homes, and breathe fresh life into declining neighborhoods. New research also tells us that startups are the key to the nations economic recovery, inasmuch as new companies, those less than 5 years old, account for all net job creation in America since 1980. And immigrants are driving startups, from retail to robotics! In fact, 40% of the Fortune 500 companies were founded by either an immigrant, or a child of an immigrant. Think Apple, Goya Foods,

GE, Procter & Gamble, McDonalds, Bank of America, Budweiser and many others, creating millions of jobs and trillions of dollars in annual revenue. So, if America really wants to create a lot more new jobs, the country will need to have a new conversation about immigration. The hostile, emotional sanctimonious arguments used today regarding both undocumented and documented immigration misses the point. Instead of demonizing immigrants, the country should discuss ways to leverage the immigrant dividend. The objective should be to grow the economy, plain and simple. Immigrants can help us with that. If we let them. And not just in terms of launching new businesses, creating new jobs, boosting exports, and priming the economy with a new wave of consumerism ---- these are all huge drivers of growth. But immigrants help us in another but equally important way: by creating an optimistic and confident tone in the country. In effect, immigrants are the living embodiment of the American Dream. They are the Dream-Keepers. Part myth, part religion, part reality, the American Dream is essential because it is what unites us. It is the shared belief that, in America, anything is possible, that people starting at the very bottom can catapult themselves to the very top. It is a belief in tomorrow. And immigrants keep this flame alive. "Before we arrive, we already know that America is the best that mankind can offer. So when we arrive, we go full blast!" says Ratanjit

This worries members of the Nevada Gaming Commission, who claim the wildly fluctuating peso exchange rate will cause confusion among even the most skilled gamblers. But Fernandez insists that the decision to use Mexican currency is designed to provide as authentic an experience as possible so that visitors will feel that they are truly south of the border.

Academic Success
By Richard Romero

Every parent wants their child to succeed in school.

The qualities of a good student are going to have a great impact to determine the student's bright academic future and career. You can achieve things by setting real goals for yourself and working towards them. Nobody is perfect in every subject. You have strengths and weaknesses that you have to accept. Knowing your learning style is one of the most important del colombiano Juan Manuel Santos, ms preocupado en restaurar las things you will ever learn. As long buenas relaciones entre la dictadura de los Castro y Estados Unidos que as you work hard and try hard every day, you will be successful. Era la lgica de la Guerra Fra. times success is knowing that you tried your best and you did all that you can do and the only thing left to do is just go to bed at night. That's all anyone can ask of you.

Heres something you could keep in check as a parent or as a student. Five Pillars to Academic Success.

Self-confidence Allowing the student to have confidence in themselves so they can perform academically at their highest potential by developing their own individual learning style. Support From parents, teachers, counselors, coaches, family members, or friends reinforcing the students self-confidence and belief in the students ability. Should have four of these to be most effective. Motivation Identifying what motivates each student (financial, fame, intrinsic sense of accomplishment, other measures of success) and helping them understand that their quality of life will be enhanced by their pursuit of and success in academics Competition Developing the realization that there is competition in every endeavor and preparing students to manage the stresses that are inherent in a competitive environment. It is the process of competing, not the outcome of the competition, that is motivating. In team settings, each student contributes to the success of the team and each other. (Competition can also be with oneself.) Work ethic Developing a strong work ethic and understanding that for success to truly be meaningful that it should not be easy. Demonstrating that a strong work ethic can overcome the most difficult obstacle. With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are possible. Thomas Foxwell Buxton No pain, no Gain.

Chilling video 'reveals moment 12 border guards tasered and beat Mexican illegal immigrant to death'
The report, seen by ABC News, notes that when Rojas's family visited in hospital - where he died days later - they saw signs he had been beaten, such as bruises and sores over his body. In a new video taken from an overpass the night the attack occurred, Rojas appears to be lying on the ground surrounded by a group of officers. He is apparently struck and tasered repeatedly. On the second video reportedly taken by the compound, Rojas cannot be seen, yet his screams of Please!, No! and Help! can be heard in Spanish as he pleads the officers to stop. Eyewitness accounts add that Rojas was not fighting back as he was beaten, PBS said. One told Need to Know she felt as if she was watching someone being murdered. The death was ruled a homicide by the San Diego medical examiner and was investigated by police, yet no border control agents were charged for their part in the incident. An autopsy report noted Rojas had had a heart attack. The coroner said it was not clear whether it was the result of the taser gun, a heart condition or his use of methamphetamine, found in his blood. For Video and more info go to: www.vocerolatino.com
