Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** A point in a strained material is subjected to two mutually perpendicular tensile stresses of 200 MPa and o 100 MPa. Determine the intensities of normal, tangential and resultant stresses on a plane inclined at 30 anti-clockwise to the axis of the minor stress using analytical method. (a) (b) Define the term polar modulus. Find the expressions for the polar modulus for both solid and hollow circular shafts. A solid shaft of 200 mm diameter is used to transmit torque. Find the maximum torque that can be transmitted by the shaft if the shear stress is not to exceed 50 MPa. A hollow alloy tube 5 m long with external and internal diameters of 40 mm and 25 mm respectively was found to extend 6.4 mm under a tensile load of 60 kN. Find the buckling load for the tube when used as a strut with both ends pinned. Also determine the safe load on the strut if the factor of safety is 4. Determine the maximum stress induced in a horizontal strut of length 3.1 m and of hollow circular cross section of 100 mm external diameter. The internal diameter is 0.7 times the external diameter. The strut carries an axial thrust of 88 kN and a vertical uniformly distributed lateral load of 5.2 kN/m length on the 2 whole length. The strut is pinned at both ends. Take E = 211 GN/m . A short column of diameter 400 mm carries an eccentric load of 80 kN at an eccentricity of 60 mm. Find the maximum and minimum stresses in the section. Also calculate the greatest eccentricity the load can have without producing tension on the cross section. A 90 mm X 90 mm X 10 mm steel angle is used as a cantilever of span 1.7 m and carries an end load. One leg of the angle is horizontal and the load at the end is vertical with its line of action passing through the centroid of the section. Determine the maximum allowable load if the bending stress is not to exceed 110 MPa. A semicircular beam of radius R is simply supported on three equally spaced columns. The beam carries a uniformly distributed load of intensity w per unit length. Derive expressions for (i) the shear force at the supports (ii) shear force at an angle from left support. Analyze the pin jointed cantilever truss shown in the figure below by method of sections and compute forces in all members.
