CIVIL AIR PATROL CALIFORNIA WING ENCAMPMENT

CAMP SAN LUIS OBISPO 1119 AUGUST 2007

WELCOME
TO THE CADET TRAINING GROUP
THE CADET TRAINING GROUP WAS FOUNDED

in the Summer of 1975 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. In the 32 years since, the CTG has welcomed and graduated more than 10,000 cadets into its ranks. As CTG graduates have gone on to success in their CAP careers, they have become even more successful in other aspects of their life. CTG alumni have gone on to the four service academies and become successful leaders in the armed forces of the United States. Others have become successful businessmen and women as a result of

the training they received in the CTG. Former cadets are now serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other theaters of operations throughout the world. This weekbook is dedicated to the thousands of CTG graduates who welcome you into their proud ranks. Membership in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program can be a substantial influence on your life, and being part of the Cadet Training Group will undoubtedly be a treasured experience in your life.

Lt.Col.Christine.O..Lee. Encampment.Commander
I congratulate you on successfully completing the 2007 California Wing Encampment. You have had an adventure at Camp San Luis Obispo. You have had Helicopter ORides, Marksmanship Training, the Obstacle Course, competitions in Drill and Volleyball, as well as a Group Run. You have had a variety of classes, activities, and inspections. You have learned to work as a team. You have been tested physically and mentally. The standards for success were set high and you have met those standards and succeeded. I hope that your accomplishment here will give you the confidence to try new adventures back in your CAP home unit as well as in your personal life. I also hope to see you again at a CAP activity. I look forward to hearing about your new adventures and your new successes.

Lt.Col.Robert.A..Fauteux. Commandant.of.Cadets
Congratulations Cadets! Youve completed one of the most challenging weeks of your year and even your life. Encampment is an opportunity to learn about ourselves, push our limits and accomplish things we never dreamed we could doand you did it. Most importantly, Encampment taught us how to pull together as a team and accomplish so much more than we could ever do on our own, even when we didnt have as much time as we might have wanted. Dont forget the new friends youve made and the successes youve had as you return back to your normal life. Use your skills to make success in all you do, and make us proud with your integrity and commitment to excellence.

C/Lt.Col.Cash.A.M..Upton. Commander,. Cadet.Training.Group

I am proud of all of you for your hard work and dedication throughout this week. When you signed your basic cadet contract the task ahead of you seemed daunting, and when you were directed from the room by the Sergeant Major, Im sure the week ahead of you seemed that much more difficult. However, the important thing to remember now that graduation is upon us is that you accomplished the tasks set before you, and you did not quitno matter how rigorous it felt at times. I commend you for fulfilling your commitment to yourself, your teammates, and the Cadet Training Group. Take what youve learned at encampment and apply it to your future endeavors. Never forget that your success was because of your confidence in yourself and the support and teamwork from your fellow flight mates.

C/CMSgt.Lucien.Banales. Sergeant.Major,. Cadet.Training.Group

For the past eight days, youve endured what could potentially be the most difficult, stressful, and high-intensity experience of your youth. At the beginning of encampment, each of you showed up clueless and unprepared, yet after only a week, you were able to walk away confident and proud. All this was possible only because each of you motivated yourselves to keep pushing everyday and not give upand more importantly, by not allowing those around you to quit. Now that you have completed my challenge, I charge you to carry on what youve been taught here and apply yourselves in life wherever it may take you! Now carry on...

CSSWhat the cadets had to say:

[The mental aspect] was by far the most valuable and challenging part of CSS because having to think when you are tired and hungry is a critical skill to have in a real survival situation.Even though I have been to PJOC I still found it to be a challenge This course forced me to think on my own, to break from the herd mentality and not only process my surroundings as an adult, but an adult competent in the ways of the world and well-versed in thought and logic. This is one of the few CAP activities where Ive really been expected to behave like an adult, to really take care of myself and my team. In my mind, CSS is ranked right up next to PJOC and COS in value to the Cadet Program and my personal growth. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

GRADUATION

The final day of training brought a frenzy of preparation to return the encampment area to its same state of eleven days earlier, when the first staff members arrived. The cadets packed up their belongings, stripped down their racks and readied themselves for graduation. A final Moral Leadership presentation gave everyone cause to reflect on their encampment experience. Having arrived at Camp SLO as individuals, the basic cadets came together first as flights, then as squadrons, and finally, as the Cadet Training Group. And as the Cadet Training Group they were presented to Pacific Region Vice Commander Col Larry Myrick, who reviewed the cadets as they marched in the traditional graduation parade where encampment honors for both individual achievement and flight accomplishments were awarded. And then, almost as quickly as it began, encampment came to an end. Cadets who were strangers just nine days before exchanged tearful goodbyes with their flightmates, then met their parents, families and friends as changed individuals, proud members of the California Wing Cadet Training Group.
