The Art of Leadership

Rockwood's flagship program is the Art of Leadership (AoL), a retreat workshop for social change leaders from the nonprofit, philanthropic, labor and socially responsible business sectors. Each participant receives a "360-degree" performance evaluation to clarify areas for skills development. In the Art of Leadership, professional trainers deliver a curriculum that provides leaders with (a) clarity of vision in their work; (b) partnership skills, including listening, speaking, conflict resolution and negotiation; (c) "personal mastery" and emotion allegiance skills; (d) teamwork development skills; and (e) performance skills. This program develops the 'art of leadership' with skills in three phases. Phase One develops personal power and effectiveness. Phase Two adds motivation and decision making skills to shift management habits from the Industrial Age to the Information Age. Phase Three enlists the creative support of all employees in building a vision for the future, and generate the commitment and loyalty to meet it. You can download a PDF file that proposes a New Supervisor Training Program. You can also view a series of articles on Leadership that we have written which communicate our approach to Leadership.

Leadership Styles
Leadership style is the manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people. All leadership styles can become part of the leader's repertoire. Leadership styles should be adapted to the demands of the situation, the requirements of the people involved and the challenges facing the organization.

Two types of leadership styles

Autocratic Leadership- Autocratic leadership, also known as authoritarian leadership, is a leadership style characterized by individual control over all decisions and little input from group members. Autocratic leaders typically make choices based on their own ideas and judgments and rarely accept advice from followers. Autocratic leadership involves absolute, authoritarian control over a group.

Democratic leadership- also known as participative leadership, is a type of leadership style in which members of the group take a more participative role in the decisionmaking process. Researchers have found that this learning style is usually one of the most effective and leaders to higher productivity, better contributions from group members and increased group morale.
