Artians retain cheering crown

College of Arts and Sciences
retained its title as the
defending champion of this
year’s Cheering Competition
held during the Opening
Ceremony of Sportsfest 2008
at the Coliseum this morning.
The College of Engineering
came to a close fight winning the
first runner-up trophy while the
College of Education took the
second runner up slot followed
by the College of Nursing and
the College of Business and
Accountancy as the third and
fourth runners-up, respectively.
CAS also won Best in
Choreography while the EDUC
took home the Best Bleacher
Performance.
“We are pressured. But we
changed our strategy. We
focused more on choreography,
gimmicks and not following the
traditional cheering routine.
Even if we do away with the
Artian trademark, we proved
that whatever genre and style
of cheerleading, we can do
it,” said Artian choreographer
Rodney Escalon.

hugging his/her stuffed toy

audience during their entrance

Asked how unique this year’s
performance compared to
the previous years, Ascalon
said: Every year is a special
year. Every year is for that
year only. You do not see it
[the same choreography]
from the previous years. The
performance and routine are
also more relaxed. We also
tried different kinds of genres
from salsa, African, krumping
to old school hip-hop.

One La Salle Through Sports: Preparations and Expectations

To promote unison among the five colleges and at the same time to promote

These are the main objectives of this year’s Sportsfest 2008 theme “One
La Salle through Sports” said University Student Government President Amy
Garce Gargar.
“Even if we belong to other colleges, we are into one goal of obtaining the
highest level of sportsmanship,” said Gargar.
The tagline was proposed by Sportsfest 2008 Opening Ceremony Director
Edu Pillora.

Preparation: Preparation is like the UNIGames. You could not see this
kind of sports preparation in other schools. Before the games, the rules and
eligibility were already presented so there will be no questions. The goal is to
win the games in playing not in protest.

Preparation: The College of Arts and Sciences started to prepare for the
University Sportsfest last two months. Our athletes had undergone various
trainings. The Artians Cheering Squad had a separate training gymnastics
and choreography. In sports, our goal is that none of our players will be left
behind versus the other colleges.
Expectation: Hopefully, CAS will elevate in this year’s Sportsfest compared
to being the 4th placer last year.

Preparation: We made sure that the resources are maximized. Students
are empowered to be part of the event and the various preparations. We
encouraged the different clubs of the college to mobilize so that the goals
will be achieved. We started preparing for the Sportsfest long before the 1st
semester started.
Expectation: Holding the Sportsfest Championship trophy, the College of
Business and Accountancy hopes to raise their yellow banner.
