Adjutant/Treasurer Report
Our checking account balance as of March 16th was $2,985.57. Attendance at the March meeting was 22 members and 10visitors. At our March meeting we raised $104 in donations. We also received $85 from John Henry and Darlene Taylor toward placing an ad in the Chesterfield Fairs catalog. We took in $25 in donations at Chesterfield Countys Confederate Heritage Program for Confederate History Month on April 7th and made four contacts. Ken Chandler had his display of War Between the States artifacts, and our chaplain, Don Price, was the master of ceremonies. Commander Bill Brown, Ken Chandler, and Matt Barrett served as the honor guard. Dues reminders will be sent out in July. The Virginia Division Sons of Confederate Veterans 53rd Annual Convention was March 30th through April 1st 2012. Several of our members went, including our Commander Bill Brown, and our camp has won the Outstanding Camp Award for the third year running. Four votes were taken by the membership. First, the camp voted to accept Mr. G.B. Spencers application for membership. Second, the camp voted to withhold the camps membership to the Museum of the Confederacy due to the current directors no longer flying any Confederate flags externally and other actions of disrespect to the memory of those who served the Confederacy. Third, the camp voted to cover half of the cost of the Confederate Medal of Honor for Private Lawrence Berry, the other half to be covered by the National Executive Council. To date, this has been $30 paid and the cost of having the medal and accompanying certificates framed. Fourth, the camp voted to buy an ad the Chesterfield Fairs catalog. It was later decided this would be a one-eighth page ad costing $190. All votes passed unanimously. Mike Thomas and his brother, William, are transferring their memberships to the Private John S. Bird, Jr. Camp #38 in North Charleston, S.C. Mike will be their new adjutant. Mike especially has made many contributions to the SCV and Camp #1589 including three Confederate Medals of Honor and the creation of the Va. Division Outstanding Camp Award. Camp #38 is getting two great guys. Respectfully submitted, Blair Perrow Adjutant/Treasurer 04/19/2012

Confederate Medal Of Honor Ceremony

Many months ago, our previous Camp Adjutant, Mike Thomas, did considerable research on a young solider named, Pvt. Lawrence Berry of the 3rd Company of the Washington Artillery (Louisiana) who was killed in action at the Battle of Fort Gregg, Petersburg on April 2nd, 1865. Pvt. Berry was just a teenage boy when he enlisted in the Washington Artillery. He listed his occupation as a barber on his enlistment record. Being a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Pvt. Berry found himself a long way from home on that fateful day in April 1865. Not too many months before, he found himself in a hospital in Richmond suffering from a gunshot wound but as soon as he healed up, he was back in action at the lines around Petersburg. General Lee knew that it was just a matter of hours before the union invaders would break the lines at Petersburg and that Richmond would fall. His only hope was to evacuate the army west, but in order to do that, he needed precious time. Pvt. Berry was one of only 334 Confederate defenders left to stand against 5,000 Yankee troops sent against their position. The order of the day was to "Hold at all costs". There was little doubt in the minds of our troops that day as to what was expected of them. It was hoped that they could hold off the Yankee horde for at least two hours to enable General Lee to evacuate and save the army. Out of eight Confederate cannons that began the battle two hours earlier, only Pvt. Berry and his six pounder remained in operation. Having just loaded his piece with double canister, Pvt. Berry stood in the open holding the firing lanyard when dozens of Yankee troops came swarming over the parapet. The enemy shouted to him to drop the lanyard or they would shoot. Pvt. Berry could easily have saved his life by dropping the lanyard, but instead, he replied to the invaders, "Shoot and be Damned!", as he pulled the lanyard inflicting heavy causalities on the enemy. Pvt. Berry was immediately shot down and his body riddled by musket balls. Compatriot Thomas, realizing the outstanding heroism of this young soldier, compiled all of the records and paperwork necessary to submit a recommendation to the National Sons of Confederate Veterans Medal of Honor Committee for consideration. Recently, the committee voted to award the Confederate Medal of Honor to Pvt. Lawrence Berry and we have the medal, ribbon, and citation in hand and ready for the framers. Commander Brown has contacted the director of the Petersburg Siege Museum and we have an appointment with them on May 2nd to discuss the SCV putting the medal on permanent loan to the museum. We have scheduled a Medal of Honor Ceremony in conjunction with the Jefferson Davis Memorial Service to be held at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 2nd, 2012 at the Hollywood Cemetery. The Commander in Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Michael Givens, will be coming from Tennessee to award the medal and present it to the Siege Museum representative. We need every single camp member to turn out for this very special occasion. Be sure to bring the family - there will be a uniformed color guard, uniformed honor guard, artillery company, bag pipe band, and great speakers. The firing of the musket and artillery volleys is quite an impressive sight. All of the service will be held at the Davis Circle (the grave site of our only president and his family). Camp members are asked to be there at least by 8:00 A.M. to help with setting up the folding chairs & flags.
