EDUCATION CORNER
Leadership Training via Lucy and Charlie Brown
Lucy is upset. She tells Charlie Brown, Everywhere you go you seem to run into phonies. The people you think are sincere usually turn out not to be, and the people you think arent sincere, usually turn out to BE sincere! Lucy asks: The question is how you tell the phonies from the realies? Good question! At the heart of The Next Step program is the premise that authentic leaders are not phonies but are instead realies. But how do you become authentic, genuine, and real as a leader when faced with the demands and pressures of organizational life? During The Next Step Program, participants are asked to reflect on questions about their life story. As they probe into their past and create their life story, they are able to discern a path forward, a way to remain true to their purpose and lead authentically. Along the way, they learn how to tell the phonies from the realies. Working with Hammer I met Tim Nelson through my wife, Jean, and was immediately struck by how he could focus his attention and be absolutely present to the person he was talking to. I subsequently learned more about the kind of leader he was and the spirited team he built. He reminded me of the best boss I ever worked for, George Scarborough, Principal of Armstrong High School. My wife encouraged me to contact Tim and see if he was interested in having me work with his staff. As a result, I was invited to present my program, The Next Step, to six Hammer managers in early 2011.

Bill Gjetson is a consultant specializing in the development of emerging leaders. Bill has over 30 years of experience in teaching and coaching and is currently a facilitator for HR Connection. He has taught classes in human resources and leadership for Metro University, the University of Minnesota, and the College of Continuing Education at the University of Minnesota. Bill holds masters degrees from the University of Wisconsin in history and the University of Minnesota in human resources.

How Hammer Got to Great

I recently attended a great conference hosted by the Minnesota Planned Giving Council. For two days, I learned from expert professionals about wills, trusts, annuities and IRA rollovers. The presenters inspired us with stories about how great nonprofits become great. While soaking in their wisdom, I came to believe, once again, that Hammer is one of the great ones. Hammer got to great by doing just what these experts suggested: we have inspired others to do something worthwhile and of lasting importance out of a shared passion a desire for all people who live with disabilities to live satisfying lives. People connect to Hammers mission for a variety of reasons. You may have a family member who is thriving because of devoted staff members in our homes or you may be a volunteer who feels energized by interacting with someone we serve. Whatever your reasons, I trust you share my desire to ensure the people we serve live life to the fullest of their abilities. A planned gift is an amazing way to feel were contributing something of lasting importance to Hammers mission. A bequest in your will or a beneficiary designation on your insurance policy or retirement account is an uncomplicated way to make a gift, especially if cash gifts are difficult for you at this time. Your planned gift to Hammer is one very significant way you can leave a legacy to fund Hammers future success. Hammers giving guide on our web site is rich with information about planned gifts. To learn more, go online to www.hammer.org/giving/givingguide or contact me at 952.277.2433.

we continue to recover from the loss of our leader and friend, we have grown in our appreciation for the strong and vital organization which he created. A key element to Hammers current strength is the emphasis Tim placed on developing leadership throughout the organization. Earlier this year, we embarked on a new form of leadership development called Authentic Leadership The Next Step, referenced on page 1 of this newsletter. This approach recognizes not only what a person brings to the table professionally but also how we develop as leaders as a result of our personal life experiences.

I came to understand that through some personal difficulties, I learned to value more deeply the differences and unique talents we each bring to our leadership styles.
As part of the process, six leaders from Hammer gathered to share some significant personal experiences and learned more about the impact those experiences had on our professional lives. I found it to be a truly extraordinary experience. I came to understand that through some personal difficulties, I learned to value more deeply the differences and unique talents we each bring to our leadership styles. We have made a commitment to continue with this vision of leadership development and to replicate the process with other leaders throughout Hammer. I believe that as we strengthen who we are as leaders, we will create new models for greater independence and ways to value the needs and talents of the men, women, and children we support. In Tims words: People with disabilities, supported by their families and dedicated professionals, now hold a new vision for their lives - one in which they are afforded their full rights, they are respected and valued for the gifts they bring to the community, and their desires and dreams for self-direction are honored. It is my hope that this vision will not be lost, but built upon. *

IN MEMORY
April 1, 1942 March 26, 2011 Paul lived at Hammer for over 50 years. He loved his friends and his church, Ascension Lutheran. He looked forward to going to work at Opportunity Partners every day for over 30 before retiring in 2009. Paul loved the holidays and decorating his home to celebrate. He loved Christmas music, especially country versions. Paul went to Christ for People every Tuesday and to bowling on Wednesdays. He loved going out to dinner, watching wrestling and being with his best friend, Lynn Aase. Paul lived at his Sheridan Home for the last 20 months of his life with the help of hospice care. He left us on March 26, 2011. God bless you, Paul.

Harry Caloviras
2/10/1954 - 12/26/2010 Harry Caloviras was at home, surrounded by his friends and family, when he passed away in December last year. His unexpected passing was especially difficult for everyone who supported him at Hammer for the past 16 years. Harry had very special way of relating to the people he loved. He would ask people to write phrases or statements he thought of on a piece of paper. Then Harry would ask them to read the phrases out loud always adding the words HAVE FUN! at the end. He delighted in hearing phrases like, Harry will go to Grand Casino and HAVE FUN! or, Harry will go to camp and HAVE FUN! We will miss you dearly, Harry. Barb Matter and Claire Wolters

Lynn Mary Aase September 23, 1947 April 5, 2011 Lynn Mary Aase lived at Hammer for over 40 years. She loved her work at Opportunity Partners and was employed there for 35 years. Lynn enjoyed her family and friends and her big sister, Karole, her devoted conservator. Lynn loved to go bowling, to movies and out to dinner. She especially enjoyed spending time with her best friend and long-time housemate, Paul. Summers were her favorite time of year and she often spent a week at Camp Friendship. Lynn retired in 2009 after suffering symptoms of Alzheimers disease. She lived among her friends at Hammers Sheridan Home until hospice care became a necessity. She will be dearly missed. A Tribute to Tim: Leading by Example

by Joe Reis, Hammer Volunteer and Board Member Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim Heaven, Heaven, Heaven, Heaven! These were the words of Wentworth House resident, Mark, at the Hammer-wide memorial service for Tim Nelson. Mark has some difficulty communicating verbally but his message was clear as he took the microphone. In his own way, Mark spoke for all of us, thanking Tim and acknowledging his lifes work. Tim was a very special person who led by example. He was devoted to serving Hammer clients. His life was dedicated to their lives. He focused on abilities, not disabilities and inspired all of us to do the same. I first had the opportunity to meet Tim several years ago through my Hammer volunteer work at Holy Name Church. Over the years, we became closer and he encouraged me to join the Hammer Board. Ive never met anyone as gracious as Tim. When Tim thanked you for helping, he really meant it. His words were sincere, genuine and meaningful. I learned some lasting life lessons from Tim and I am a better person for having known him. Tims legacy will remain with Hammer, with those who are served by the organization, with those of us who work and volunteer here and everyone who has welcomed Hammer into their lives. May we all follow Tims example and do everything we can to serve with the passion and devotion he lived every day of his life.

Joe Reis has been an active volunteer at Hammer for 21 years.

Joe and Kathy Reis with Mary.

New York, New York: Part 2

In our last issue, we introduced you to Becky who lives with Cerebral Palsy and Arthrogryposis. Becky always dreamed of traveling to New York City. Her dream came true last month through the combined efforts of the staff of Hammer Travel and the generosity of Rory Albanese, an Executive Producer of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Here are some highlights from that amazing experience. New York City! Becky roared with exuberance as she savored the experience of being in Central Park on a sunny day in October. She was living a lifelong dream and felt like she was on top of the world! With the help of Hammer Travels trip leaders, Becky and five other individuals with developmental disabilities had a blast exploring the Big Apple. The whole group attended a taping of The Today Show and met many of the hosts including Al Roker, Matt Lauer and Ann Curry. They went to the Statue of Liberty, visited the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center and saw a performance of Wicked on Broadway. But the highlight of the trip was definitely when they attended a VIP taping of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, met The Daily Show staff and posed for photos with Jon Stewart himself! Becky was then able to meet her benefactor, Rory Albanese, who immediately gave her a big hug. When he asked if Becky felt like she was living her dream, she enthusiastically responded, Yes! The experience clearly meant a lot to the staff at The Daily Show as well. Rory Albanese sent this parting message to Hammer Travel: You guys are incredible. Meeting all of you was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life. Stay in touch please!
To see Hammer Travels NYC Video Journal including footage of meeting Rory Albanese and Jon Stewart please visit our website at www.HammerTravel.org.

State-Wide Organizations Honor Tim Nelsons Legacy

Lisbeth Armstrong, Hammers interim CEO, represented our organization at The Association of Residential Resources in Minnesotas (ARRM) annual leadership conference in September. ARRM is an association of 150 private providers of residential services to individuals with developmental disabilities. The photo (far right) shows Lisbeth accepting ARRMs recognition for Tim Nelsons work in disability services. At the time of Tims passing, he was beginning his term as the President of the Board of Directors at The Arc of Minnesota. Recently, Pat Mellenthin, Arc of Minnesotas CEO, announced a new award in Tims honor. The Tim Nelson Unity Award will be given to a person or organization that best exemplifies acts of bridging and networking within the larger community of people concerned for citizens with developmental disabilities. The award was unveiled at the Arc of Minnesotas annual conference in November.

The award recognizes an individual employed in community services for persons with developmental disabilities who has demonstrated sensitivity and the ability to provide an outstanding quality of service, which results in increased independence for people with developmental disabilities. Jan accepted the award with these gracious words: Hunter Sargent, Kim Hansen, Jan Hopper, Lisbeth Armstrong and Karen Larson We saw the need, and we went ahead and did it.This quote, from one of Hammers founders, is inscribed on the wall outside the training room of our main building. This one sentence describes Hammers approach to providing services for over 85 years. Although it is from the mid-1920s, it is a philosophy that continues today. It makes my job easy and inspires me and the other staff to think outside the box. We are allowed and encouraged to dream, to brainstorm, to indulge in wild flights of fancy, possibilities and what ifs. It makes us feel that nothing is impossible. It means our job is both fun and challenging. And it makes us realize that something as small as encouraging and supporting an individual to make cookies from a mix can lead to bigger things and better lives. This award might have my name on it, but it also belongs to the awesome staff team I work with and the company we work for. Thank You.

s this on the record? asked Nathan, a Hammer self-advocate, in quick response to Senator Al Frankens question. The Senator and everyone in the room chuckled He had requested more information after Nathan spoke at a June meeting hosted by Hammer on potential cuts to disability services. Nathan made a lasting impression on Senator Franken at that meeting. When the two met again at a Special Olympics Event, a lasting friendship had begun. Shortly thereafter, Franken visited Nathan at his home with an exciting proposition. The Senator invited him to Washington, DC, to advocate for the preservation of Medicaid and Social Security benefits. Senator Franken had become a champion for disability rights in Washington and wanted Nathan by his side. He happily agreed. In November, Nathan flew to Washington along with his parents and Hammer support staff. The trip was a huge success and an amazing experience for Nathan. He stood alongside other self-advocates and congressional members who were there to introduce the Achieving Better Life Experience Act (ABLE). ABLE has been championed by the National Disability Institute and other disability organizations as a key to providing a pathway to a better economic future for persons with disabilities and their families. The next day, Nathan visited Senator Franken at his office near Nathan, Tim Janssen, and Peter Berns, CEO, The Arc of the United States Capitol Hill. He also attended the Senators porridge breakfast hosted every Wednesday. Afterward, the two met privately and the Senator presented Nathan with a very special coin, saying it represented his commitment to their friendship. Needless to say, Nathan was thrilled! You can see the entire trip unfold when Nathan and Senator Franken are featured on KARE 11 with Rena Sarigianopoulos this winter. Receiving the USO coin
