May has me thinking about mental health. I know theres a stigma. Why are we so afraid to talk seriously about it? According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in four adults approximately 57.7 million Americans experience a mental health disorder in a given year. So, given the odds, we all know someone who may be silently suffering. Maybe its your coworker. Maybe its your aunt. Or, maybe its your yoga instructor. If someone you care about is struggling, dont you want to know so you can show your support and concern? Yes, May is mental health awareness month. Its the perfect time for us to eliminate the stigma and get the dialogue started! Most importantly, if you are one of the one in four, please know that you are not alone. Reach out to family, friends or your healthcare provider for support. Visit nami. org or nimh.nih.gov for more information. As I look over the 2012 National Health Observances calendar, there are so many illnesses to command our attention: arthritis; hepatitis; lupus; skin cancer; asthma; celiac disease; high blood pressure; and more just in the month of May. Observing these awareness months not only educates all of us, but also pushes us to show more compassion and to focus more closely on a healthy, happy lifestyle. Wed like to help you on your journey! In this issue, Julie Rider has some advice if you are looking to make any type of change in your life. Melissa Seith shares some great information about coordinating your meals and snacks in order to maximize your workouts. And, Dan Dahle educates those of us who have arthritis on the benefits of physical therapy. Theres much more, so keep reading!
Happy Mothers Day to all of you moms out there! Take some time to pamper yourself. In health and happiness,

Sleep disorders
By Dr. Kelley J. Parnell
hile 84 classifications of sleep disorders exist, sleep apnea, narcolepsy and restless leg syndrome are among the most common. Symptoms of these sleep disorders include general tiredness, irritability, problems with concentration or memory, waking feeling unrefreshed, morning headaches and sleepiness throughout the day.
Sleep apnea is a problem with discontinuing breathing while sleeping. Some of the most obvious symptoms include loud snoring and significant weight gain. Sleep apnea can actually cause weight gain people who are at risk for having sleep apnea are more likely to have sleep apnea if they are overweight, and conversely, the sleep apnea can cause weight gain. People with sleep apnea often stop breathing during sleep and wake up gasping for air. Other medical conditions are more difficult to treat in people that have undiagnosed sleep apnea, including diabetes and high blood pressure. Additionally, people that have chronic pain syndromes will often have a condition of sleep apnea, which makes the chronic pain more difficult to treat. People that have symptoms that present themselves as depression may actually be a component of sleep apnea, such as poor energy and difficulties with motivation and concentration. Some medications can make sleep apnea more likely to occur, including those taken for chronic pain issues.
Narcolepsy is an inherited condition where a patient has a great deal of difficulty discerning the difference between sleep and wake. Most of us consider wakefulness as white and sleep as black, where people with narcolepsy spend most of their days and nights in the gray. Narcolepsy is very disruptive people can fall asleep at inappropriate times, and no matter how much sleep they get, they have a relentless overwhelming desire to go back to sleep.

Many sleep specialists, in fact, believe that the obesity issue in the United States isnt a calorie or food intake issue, but a sleep disorder issue.
People often develop narcolepsy when theyre quite young and it never occurs to them it could be a problem or abnormality, so the condition can go unrecognized in families. Its important to discern in people that have relentless daytime sleepiness whether or not they have narcolepsy because it is a condition that can be readily treated and can have a significant impact on quality of life.
Restless leg syndrome is where people have an internal sensation in their legs where they need to move them or rub them or get up to walk around. This can interfere with ones ability to get enough rest. Restless leg syndrome is a condition that is sometimes seen with other neurologic problems, such as Parkinsons disease and Alzheimers disease. Other medical conditions, such as iron deficiency or renal disease can also cause restless leg syndrome. People that have trouble getting adequate sleep will very often have relentless weight gain. Many sleep specialists, in fact, believe that the obesity issue in the United States isnt a calorie or food intake issue, but a sleep disorder issue. It is believed that we have lost our artificial ability to sleep adequately, and because of this, changes in the body chemistry are developed. Sleep disorders are also associated with diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

e are back again with our next segment in our 12-part series addressed Wellness vs. Wellbeing. As mentioned in previous months articles, individuals who focus on wellbeing are more likely to be healthy and whole. Wellbeing is the foundation for overall wellness. Just for Me Wellbeing Program is designed to enhance wellbeing, strengthen your relationships, expand your ability to manage stress and help you further enjoy what you do. The Just for Me Wellbeing Program has implemented successfully at Target Corporation, cities of St. Louis Park and Prior Lake (both in Minnesota), St. Catherines University in the Twin Cities and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Each participant in the Just for Me Wellbeing Program sets an intention at the start of the program and each week the focus is on one of twelve realms to encourage, inspire and ensure movement forward on that intention. Please join me each month as I introduce Wellness vs. Wellbeing, exploring the Just for Me twelve realms that will support our overarching intention of creating wellbeing throughout our lives:
Inner drive/motivation
Change comes from within. Setting goals and making changes in our lives comes from within, or what we call intrinsic goals. Can you remember a time when someone tried to impose a change on you? That probably didnt work because it was from outside of yourself, or extrinsic. We change when we are ready to change and that is impacted by the reality of the stage we are in at the time. In the Stages of Change Model we ask

or many people, there are times when anxiety can seem inescapable. In the workplace, social anxiety can destroy potential growth and job satisfaction. In the home, constant worry and unreasonable fears can take a toll on your relationship with your spouse, partner, friends and children. Worst of all, anxiety can make you feel like theres no escape from its effects. If you suffer from anxiety, at least know
that you are not alone. Approximately 40 million Americans are going through the same thing.1,2 Far beyond personal stress, it has large-scale monetary consequences, too. Anxiety disorders cost the U.S. more than $42 billion a year, almost one third of the $148 billion total mental health bill for the U.S.3

www.naturespathways.com
But happily, there is a way to break out of the cycle of anxiety. Best yet, it is natural, clinically tested and free of side effects. Along with lifestyle changes like cutting back on caffeine, practicing yoga or meditation, and getting regular exercise, this reliable botanical can help you deal with anxiety effectively. And its not one that youd normally expect. Certainly, many botanicals have been recognized in connection with anxiety reduction: valerian, alpha-linolenic acid, flaxseed, kava and gotu kola, to name a few. But oddly enough, there is one botanical that may come as a surprise Echinacea. Specifically, it is a unique extract of Echinacea angustifolia, and one administered at low doses.
Youd think that with all of the clinical studies and research that has been done with Echinacea and immune health, that someone would have seen a connection between the herb and some kind of calming effect.
But the reason more people hadnt noticed Echinacea reduces anxiety before is because the typical dosage for immune system support (the traditional use for Echinacea) is pretty high generally hundreds of milligrams per dose. But in lower amounts, the E. angustifolia species provides a dramatically different effect. This discovery came about when researchers at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences were analyzing different species of Echinacea and found that some of the plants contained compounds that were known to influence brain chemistry, including receptors in our brain that trigger anxiety. However, only one of the five extracts they tested Echinacea angustifolia, grown under specific conditions possessed high enough levels of beneficial compounds to show anxiety-relieving 17 effects.4

ell, its that time of year again when the fleas and ticks are starting to come alive and send everyone running to their vets with worry about heartworm and flea infestation; not to mention Lyme disease. With good reason! It can be a very serious situation to have your pet get any of these parasites. The almighty flea can not only be a real problem for your dog or cat, but it can also take what seems like forever to get rid of including all the work to get them out of the house and bedding. Even with bombing and a good flea comb, it can take weeks.
Lyme disease can be a very painful inflammatory disease and, of course, the mosquito can do a lot of damage carrying heartworm. There are drugs that can be given, and usually are supplied by your local vet, for such things as fleas and ticks. Heartgard and Frontline would usually be the two suggested. Some vets recommend they be given 12 months a year. But, what many vets wont tell you is how many dogs outright die from applications of Frontline and that the side effects from Heartgard can be awful.
The main ingredient found in Heartgard is called Ivermectin. Ivermectin is a prescribed medication that is often used to treat parasites in dogs. It has also been used to treat ear mites and as a heartworm preventive in dogs. Ivermectin can cause allergic reactions in some dogs. Symptoms can be wheezing, difficult breathing and swelling of lips, eyes and tongue. Symptoms of toxicity can be vomiting, tremors, weakness, blindness, dilated pupils and lack of appetite. Other side effects while taking the medication can be dizziness, fever, joint pain, rashes and more. Using flea control products at the same time may even increase side effects. The good news is, there are a few wonderful products that can be used that are totally safe and will repel fleas, ticks, flies and mosquitoes. Neem sprays are of a natural nature, are totally harmless and repel the worst of the insects. Neem sprays can be sprayed on from weekly to about every two weeks to be safe. If you are in an area that may be more infested, they are safe to use more often. Safe enough to use on yourself! Please consider using a safer product that can be used as often as needed with no side effects at all. Have a long and pest-free summer.

Clinical findings
In a scientific study, a variety of Echinacea extracts were compared to the prescription anti-anxiety drug, chlordiazepoxide (brand name Librium).4 Only the special extract from Echinacea angustifolia demonstrated significant anxiety reduction, comparable to the prescription drug. During these tests, there were no issues with Echinacea regarding sleepiness and impaired movement a side effect commonly seen in higher doses of chlordiazepoxide.4 This extract was then tested with individuals experiencing generalized anxiety disorder. After only one day of use, the participants experienced a significant reduction of anxiety, and a 25% reduction by day 7. This preparation of Echinacea angustifolia root extract was found to not only meet or exceed the drug anti-anxiety effects, but also did not cause drowsiness, which is only one of the many possible side effects of prescription anxiety-relieving drugs.5,6

Dosage levels are very important. Anxiety relief only occurs at low doses, and disappears when the dosage is greatly increased. So, just use one 20 mg tablet at a time, up to 4 per day if needed. Its a bit of a switch of thinking to realize that in this case, less really is more. But this actually makes the extract very handy it can be used several times a day if needed especially before a stressful event like making a presentation or air travel. So, while Echinacea usually brings cold and flu to mind, its time to consider this amazing extract of Echinacea angustifolia for fighting anxiety, too. Youll find that this great botanical can help guide you through the storms of worry and set you on a path to peace of mind.

Question: Well, its that time of year again. Any advice on sticking to my New Years resolutions now that we are several months into 2012? Answer: To be honest with you, I dont really like the whole resolution approach at all. Wasnt it Einstein that said doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is a sure sign of insanity? If thats true, I find it ironic that people set similar goals year after year, and yet fail to reach those goals year after year. Its clear you want to make some changes thats what resolutions are all about but it sounds like its your mindset that needs to change. You have to determine how committed you are to living a lifestyle of health. After all, it takes dedication and hard work to exercise consistently, make healthy food choices most of the time and get adequate sleep each night. And these are just some of the behaviors that define wellness. But heres the thing when you decide that revamping your lifestyle is more important than reaching some short-term goal for 2012, New Years resolutions will become a thing of the past! Question: Id love to run a 5K with some friends this spring, but I am not active at all right now. How should I go about training for something like this? Answer: This is a great question! There are actually several plans on the Internet that can take you from the couch to the 5K course in as little as 8-10 weeks. In fact, you can even use one of these plans if you have no intention of running a 5K, but simply want to start incorporating fitness (running) into your lifestyle. Most of the plans start with combination walk/jog/walk session, 3 days per week, steadily increasing the actual jog time from just 2 or 3 minutes to about 10 minutes by weeks 4 or 5. At this point, you also start to add an extra day of training, totaling 4 sessions each week. As you continue to increase your jog time, you gradually remove the walking warm-up, thereby finishing each workout

with just a basic walking cool-down. By the time you get to 10 weeks, you should be able to run consistently for 25-30 minutes without stopping. Not bad for a former couch potato, huh? Do a Google search for couch-to-5K training programs or check out www.halhigdon.com for more information. Good luck!
Question: Im looking to add some serious muscle mass and Im curious about the engineered weight gainers out on the market. In other words, do you think weight gainers should be used to gain weight? Answer: Weight gainer supplements can have a place when it comes to adding muscle, but heres my general philosophy on the matter. First of all, we know calories are of prime importance if gaining weight is the goal. We also know that some people simply cant eat enough to gain the type of weight that theyd like to. This means that liquid calories become pretty important because liquids obviously arent quite as filling as solid foods. But my personal preference would be to create my own weight gainer smoothies with real foods, like fruits, yogurt, protein powders, oats, milk and even things like peanut butter, frozen yogurt and a little bit of chocolate. Then, you can combine these beverages with some hearty meals, and youll be on your way to a bigger you in no time. If youve found a particular weight gainer supplement that you happen to like, and you can afford it, then you can certainly go that route, too. I just happen to be a food first kind of gal, and Ive always found my smoothies and shakes more palatable than what is on the market. In the end, do what you think is best, and dont forget to train for weight gain as well.

y first encounter with a homebirth mama and her 5-month-old son was during an Options in Childbirth class at the Mom and Pop Place in Neenah, Wis. Sure, Ive seen thedocumentarieslike The Business of Being Born and What Babies Want, soIve gotten some pretty great images of the process. But I had yet to see the end result the relationships of the family until now. They were the most bewitching pair I have ever seen and not necessarily because of physical attributes, though they were quite cute. It was the love they had for each other. I could see their connection as clear as day. So in tune with each other, they performed this amazing dance of bonding, breastfeeding, sleeping and playing and I observed this in a span of only 2 hours.
This baby was so very alert and happy, smiling at everyone in the room individually as if to say, This is what you can have if you choose natural childbirth. This is the reward. A baby like me who has absolutely no doubt that he is wanted and loved and came into this world KNOWING that. He was born gently with love into an inviting place his own home. His mom held him fresh without cleaning him off first. He wasntwhiskedaway for a vaccine or to get ointment smeared into his eyes. This mother and child were allowed to do what nature intended them to do bond, float away on the euphoria of each others scents, fall in love and nourish one another. Nothing else was necessary.
Since then, Ive met several more homebirth mama/baby pairs. Thomasa, a local natural parent, was kind enough to give her comparison of hospital and homebirth experiences, as shes done both between her four children. She felt that while in labor in the hospital, the restrictions were minimal aside from not being allowed to eat. For her, the big difference between homebirth and hospital birth was more glaring once baby arrived. The restrictive part was after I had the baby. This was all new to me. They kept wanting to take the baby away from me. When my first three were born at home, they

Many women choose homebirth because theyve had a hospital birth and felt it lacked the love and warmth that should come with childbirth.
were immediately placed on my chest and got to relax for some quite time. They checked the baby out while I was cuddling and bonding. In the hospital, I got a second for a quick hug and then they took her to check her vitals and everything. This freaked me out and after that I was labeled difficult because I wouldnt let them take her. They kept coming in and wanting to take her to the nursery so they could bathe her, let me get my rest and the list went on. Then, before we could leave, a pediatrician had to check her out to clear us. Because we do not vaccinate and I did not allow the Hep B vaccination to be given, he gave me a lecture that would make even a person that had not just given birth and had crazy hormone issues cry.
When I asked Thomasa what shed like every mom to know about choosing a childbirth method, this is what she said. I would tell a mom that she just needs to listen to her gut. If having her baby in the comfort of her own home feels right to her then she should go with that. Society has many women believing that the only safe place to have a baby is in the hospital. Granted they have their place, but we were giving birth long before hospitals ever existed. When women go into a hospital to deliver without a clear birth plan they can be more easily lead down the path of what is best for the doctor and the hospital over what is best for the mom and the baby. Homebirths are totally focused on mom and the baby, the way it should be. Our society has come to rely heavily on the hospital and less on the woman who is having the baby. The fact is women
know how to give birth. It is instinctual and it is intimate. If a birth experience ends up being scary or bewildering for either mom or baby, the trauma can indeed remain. Many women choose homebirth because theyve had a hospital birth and felt it lacked the love and warmth that should come with childbirth. Many women feel there is no way they could give birth outside the safe harbor of a hospital. It is your choice to make. My intent in writing this article is not to convince every pregnant woman to have a homebirth. Instead I just want to expose women to the idea that they have choices. Mothers know best when they know all their options, is my slogan after all.

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every three Americans is affected with arthritis. Most people over the age of 50 show some signs of arthritis, but it is not just an older persons disease. Nearly two thirds of people with arthritis are younger than age 65, and are affected by over 100 types of arthritic and degenerative conditions. Two of the most common forms are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and although they have very different causes, risk factors and effects on the body, they share a common symptom persistent joint pain. Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) have been found to be extremely effective at treating the pain and inflammation associated with all types of arthritis. TCM does not recognize arthritis as one particular syndrome. Instead, it treats the specific symptoms that are unique to each individual using a variety of techniques such as acupuncture, Chinese herbs, bodywork, lifestyle and dietary recommendations, and exercises to restore imbalances found in the body. Studies have shown support for the use of acupuncture for arthritis pain. A Scandinavian study of patients with osteoarthritis symptoms showed positive relief well enough that 25 percent of patients who had been scheduled for knee surgery cancelled their operations after acupuncture treatment. The same study showed followup treatments once monthly sustained the pain relief.
A University of Maryland study showed patients who received twice-weekly acupuncture treatments with conventional therapy for eight weeks had significant pain relief and had improvement in function. Patients who received conventional treatments without acupuncture showed no significant change. Acupuncture can stimulate the production of endorphins (natural pain-killing hormones in the brain) and anti-inflammatory hormones that reduce pain and inflammation. Acupuncture can be used on an ongoing basis to prevent re-occurrence of pain once it has been successfully controlled. Modern western medicine typically recommends non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as treatment for arthritis symptoms. Long-term NSAID use is estimated to be responsible for over 100,000 hospitalizations and 16,500 deaths per year in the United States, and represents 43% of drug-related emergency visits, due to its adverse effects on the gastrointestinal system. Arthritis symptoms manifest as pain, soreness or numbness of muscles, tendons and joints, and are the result of the body being invaded by external factors such as wind, cold, heat and/or dampness, according to TCM. These pathogenic invaders lodge in the bodys meridians (energy pathways) and obstruct the free flow of qi (energy) and blood in the meridians. This obstruction in the meridians causes pain, heat and symptoms typical in arthritis sufferers. Acupuncture and herbal therapy work to open the blockage

and balance the bodys energy to eliminate pain and inflammation, and increase mobility and range of motion in the joints. There are many Chinese herbal formulas that are prescribed for arthritis. Your acupuncturist/herbal practitioner will examine you, learn your signs and symptoms, and determine which herbs are best for you. Lifestyle and diet play a crucial role in helping you avoid or control arthritis pain. A healthy diet and exercise can help you lose weight if you are overweight, as extra pounds can cause additional stress to your joints. Vitamin C and vitamin D can help prevent bone and cartilage destruction, and a good multivitamin can help ensure that you get the nutrition you need. Some foods have natural anti-inflammatory properties. Here are a few healthy and delicious choices to include in your diet: ginger, fresh pineapple, tart cherries, turmeric and cold-water fish such as salmon, which contains omega-3 fatty acids. These foods all have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. The popularity of acupuncture and TCM for arthritis continues to grow as more people find relief from their symptoms without the negative side effects that come from modern pharmaceuticals.

ow would you describe the essence of America? Is it our attitude of self-reliance, or maybe the resourcefulness that helped create the wealth and stature that makes us who we are today? From the pioneers that settled from sea to shining sea, to the entrepreneurial spirit of Silicon Valley, America is what she is because people who had a vision of what they wanted their life to be like set out to create that life for themselves.
The WebMD article also cites the following: Forty-three percent of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress. Seventy-five percent to 90% of all doctors office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints. Stress can play a part in problems such as headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression and anxiety.
An article from WebMD titled How Does Stress Affect Health?1 sums up the effects of stress. According to the article, there are two kinds of stress, positive stress and negative stress. Employees who are better able to handle negative stress situations tend to be more productive at work and happier at home.
Jyutsu seem simple on the surface, but employees who are better able to handle negative stress situations tend to be more productive at work and happier at home. Some examples of workplace wellness programs/courses include health education classes, subsidized use of fitness facilities and internal policies that promote healthy behavior. When successful, wellness programs can: Improve presenteeism: This occurs when employees come to work but are not as productive as usual due to stress, depression, injury or illness.2 Reduce injuries: Healthy employees are at a lower risk for injury than unhealthy employees. Many modalities used in wellness programs focus on the physical or emotional aspects of complete health. Jin Shin Jyutsu, however, incorporates physical as well as emotional well-being. It is so incredibly versatile that it extends beyond proximity to a gym, potential adversity to needles, side effects from medicines or
herbal remedies, or even pain so intense that any type of massage pressure would be unbearable for the patient. Since Jin Shin Jyutsu is an all-natural, drug-free option that does not use any pressure applied to the surface of the skin, it does not interfere with traditional medical methods and can be used in conjunction with current exercise and wellness initiatives. It also does something that many other modalities do not it provides the opportunity to help ones self, rather than depend solely on the practitioner to alleviate all ailments. Jin Shin Jyutsu does not require any special or expensive equipment and can be administered anywhere, at any time. In a world where people are constantly searching for easy answers, and stress is becoming a serious health risk, corporate wellness programs are definitely a step in the right direction. Incorporating an all-encompassing modality such as Jin Shin Jyutsu could bring wellness to a whole new level, increasing employee productivity, reducing health care costs and maybe even bringing America back to those qualities that made her what she is self-reliant and resourceful.

olychrome means multicolored. Jasper means spotted or speckled. And this mineral, Polychrome Jasper, once seen, makes it understandable to see how it was named. Polychrome Jasper is a beautifully vivid multicolored specimen that reminds one of the Painted Desert. Perhaps thats why it is also called Desert Jasper. While searching for the now mined-out mineral, Ocean Jasper, a discovery of Polychrome Jasper was made in Madagascar. Jasper is found worldwide and in a dozen types. Polychrome Jasper, an opaque crystal, is usually banded or free-formed and found in red, yellow, brown and green. Blue Polychrome Jasper is rarer. It is the iron oxides that give jasper its color. Ocean Jasper or Orbicular Jasper generally has round concentric eye or orb patterns. These spherical patterns are inclusions developed when a crystal acts as the eye or seed of the formation. A variety of colors are found in Ocean Jasper. It is also called kinradite, oregonite, Owyhee Jasper and poppy-patterned jasper.

When it comes to earthly properties, these jaspers act as excellent crystals to ground one to the earth physically. It will also stabilize the aura and the electromagnetic field of the body. Jasper will align the chakras and assist in the healing process, balancing the physical and spiritual bodies to the ethereal plane. On a physical level, Ocean and Polychrome Jaspers may aid in the assimilating of minerals and help combat buildup of toxins in the veins. It is also said to cure a variety of dementia forms and senility, and increase mental stability. Native American cultures on this continent used it ceremonially. The circular patterns in the Ocean Jasper remind us that we are all connected as beings to one another as well as to the earth. Encouraging brotherhood among all, it symbolizes benevolence and good will, as the nurturing energy of the stone brings forth peace. encounter a lot of people that have been told the reason they have pain in a joint, or joints, is due to arthritis. Many of them feel that nothing can be done, that they will have to just live with it, try to manage it with medication and/or when it becomes intolerable, have surgery. What people dont usually realize is that physical therapy can benefit them by lessening arthritis pain and stiffness, and improving their function. First, it is important to understand a little bit about arthritis. There are many different types. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and it affects millions of Americans. Also referred to as degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis,
osteoarthritis is the wear and tear form of arthritis. It is usually a result of overuse or excessive stress on the joint(s). It can be a consequence of previous injuries, strenuous sports, obesity and/or aging. Osteoarthritis may occur early in the lives of athletes, overweight individuals and those who have suffered a previous injury to a joint. It most commonly afflicts weight bearing joints such as the feet, ankles, knees, hips and spine; but, can develop in any joint in the body. Osteoarthritis usually comes on slowly, over months or years, as the cartilage in the joint gradually breaks down. Cartilage, a smooth slippery material that covers the ends of your bones, is

there to allow the bones in the joint to glide over each other with very little friction, and to cushion the joint and serve as a shock absorber. But, as the cartilage starts to wear away, the ends of the bones begin to rub together people frequently refer to this condition as bone on bone. The affected joint becomes painful, stiff and weak. Excessive stress placed on joints can also cause cartilage to wear out more quickly than normal. Some people even develop painful bumps, called spurs, on the end of their bones. Regardless of the cause, the symptoms of osteoarthritis can be frustrating and debilitating. Although physical therapy cant cure or reverse osteoarthritis, it can help improve the symptoms of pain, stiffness, and weakness associated with arthritis. By identifying and correcting factors that put too much stress on the joint, physical therapy can help slow the progression of osteoarthritis as well as the severity of the symptoms. So, what are the factors? Some of the factors that increase osteoarthritis symptoms include imbalances in flexibility, joint range of motion and mobility, strength and balance. When there isnt enough flexibility or there is an imbalance in flexibility of muscles that support a joint, the stress on the joint can cause pain and the cartilage to wear out faster. If a joint is stiff, lacking range of motion and not moving properly, additional stress and friction are placed on cartilage. Conversely, if a joint is too loose or unstable, there will also be too much stress on the joint. Muscles help support and stabilize our joints, but if they are weak or theres an imbalance, extra stress will be placed on the joint. Finally, joints help provide our bodies with balance information and control. If you have poor balance, extra stress is placed on your joints as they try to stabilize. Sounds exasperating, doesnt it? The good news is that physical therapy can help correct these stressors on the joints. I frequently have patients come in with arthritis-related pain and stiffness that are relying on medication to manage their symptoms. Many of them are even contemplating surgery. In many cases I am able to help them improve their symptoms and function, eliminating the need for medication and oftentimes, they can forego surgery. Certainly, physical therapy is worth a try! A physical therapist is a well-educated and trained health care professional who specializes in evaluating, diagnosing and treating mobility dysfunctions. Evaluation should include a detailed history and thorough hands-on examination to diagnose all of the factors contributing to the symptoms, followed by a combination of hands-on manual treatment and a specific individualized exercise prescription to help correct the problems. If you are experiencing symptoms associated with osteoarthritis, consider seeing a physical therapist experienced in treating orthopedic (joint) conditions.

Work Services participant from the Green Bay East Goodwill Retail Store and Training Center has been named the Outstanding Achiever for April by Goodwill Industries of North Central Wisconsin (NCW). Cherie Greenwood of Green Bay was selected for this honor because of the strides she has made in this Goodwill program. Work Services is a longer-term training program for people with disabilities, and it utilizes Goodwill as a worksite to develop participants work skills and behaviors. Jeremy Pingel, store team leader at the Green Bay East Goodwill, has been working with Greenwood since the fall of
2007. When they met, Greenwood had already been with Goodwill for a few years after having started at the Menasha Goodwill store as a participant in the Work Services program. For a while, Cherie struggled to work independently and to feel comfortable with the changes in leadership at the store at that time to the point where she did take a bit of time off, Pingel said. But she came back and is a thriving, active member of our Green Bay East team. According to Pingel, Greenwood is always prepared when she comes to work and usually arrives 15-20 minutes early

so she can check in with the production leader to find out what her assignment is for the day and greet all of her fellow store team members. Although Cherie is a mainstay in our apparel department, she is quite willing to work anywhere she is needed, he said. She prefers to help rotate merchandise on the sales floor but is very proficient at any of the other apparel support positions. Pingel and the rest of the Green Bay East team say its a real pleasure to work with Greenwood because she always comes to work with a positive attitude and an eagerness to get as much done as she can in the amount of time her shift allows. In addition to working at Goodwill, Greenwood is active in the community and participates in many of Green Bays community events. She also recently discovered that she likes to take cruises. Although Greenwood was nervous about going on her first three-day cruise, she loved it so much that shes already looking forward to taking another one a sevenday cruise this time. Pingel and the entire Green Bay East team are very proud of Greenwood and all of her accomplishments, especially being selected as Goodwills Outstanding Achiever for April. Each month, Goodwill NCW names a program participant like Greenwood or

ver wonder how you learned to make eye contact when speaking with someone? Or how about why you speak casually with friends and formally with employers? Social skills are something everyone learns in their formative years through interactions with family, friends and the community at large. No one is born with an innate skill for understanding social skills or knowing how to interact with others. For children with disabilities, learning these fundamental social skills takes a little more time and effort.
According to the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH), the term disabilities refers to a wide range of symptoms, skills and levels of impairment that children can have. Some of the more common disorders include autistic disorder (classic autism) and Aspergers disorder (Asperger syndrome), but there are a wide variety of disorders that your child or a child you know may be diagnosed with. Symptoms of these disorders vary from child to child, but generally many children with disabilities face difficulties with
social and communication skills. In order to help children with disabilities learn social skills and apply them to situations everyone encounters on a day-today basis, there are many different types of therapy options for children and their parents to consider. Behavioral therapy is the most common route taken and is often based on Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and Applied Verbal Behavior (AVB).

One-on-one behavioral therapy between the child and the therapist is an important aspect of treatment, but oftentimes its hard to replicate the vast variety of social situations in such a small, intimate setting. Socialization with other children and adults, both with and without disabilities, can help children utilize the skills theyve learned in therapy and apply them to everyday situations they encounter. Socialization can begin in the home or at other familiar places for these children. Sometimes inviting friends over for a play date is a simple way to incorporate interaction with others in a non-threatening environment for the child. Eventually these early interactions will lay the foundation for interactions in the future, which will most likely take place with unfamiliar faces and places. Another resource for parents of children with disabilities is center-based therapy. In this setting, children are often taught skills in one-on-one instruction, and then are able to practice these newly learned sets of

skills in small classroom-like settings with other kids in their age group. Jessica Meyer, co-owner and center director at Connections, a center-based autism treatment provider in Kimberly, understands the importance of bringing kids with disabilities to a center-based treatment program. A center-based therapy center provides one-on-one therapy with the added benefit of small group social skills training in a center specifically designed to enhance learning for children with disabilities, said Meyer. Resources are more extensive, there is oversight of staff and children can engage in play with one another while immediately generalizing the skills theyve been taught individually. Outside socialization and center-based therapy also provide a chance for the entire family to spend some valuable time outside of the house. Oftentimes, families raising a child with disabilities sacrifice a lot of their time in order to find and maintain quality treatment for their children. Sometimes families even compromise their privacy at home when scheduling the necessary in-home therapy for their children. Increasing a childs social interactions truly helps promote and maintain their mental health, as well as keeps everyone in the familys well-being balanced.

As you lay out your garden this year, keep all the senses in mind, not only the visual.
1. Bring the inside out to create a special space within your garden. Use mirrors, dishes, pottery and furniture to create a vignette in your landscape. On your deck or plant pots or even on trees; use fabric such as ribbon, scarves and flowing fabrics in various ways to jazz up your space. Lighting, whether solar powered or candles, the use of illumination to enhance your space can really drive home the feel you are going for. 2. Bring art into your space with a sculpture or paver. Temporary art installations can be a fun and interactive way of bonding with your garden space. By using sticks, rocks, or leaves to stack and arrange in ways that are pleasing to you. Sand drawings are a lot of fun as well and can be easily changed daily if you want. Pavers that lead to a special location or just keep your feet out of the mud, either way they are practical and look great. Pavers can be made from so many products, including recycled objects imbedded into concrete. A fun project is to paint a paver with your children or invite them to use sidewalk chalk for that pop of color you are looking for. 3. Add sound to your garden space to add to your experience. I love the sound of water in any garden and there are so many options out there ranging from the table top to waterfall. The pocket book is your only limit here with all the choices of size, sight and sound of a water feature. But even colored water set in glasses at different levels on a ledge can be visually
interesting and attracting to birds. Music can be piped in, of course, but it is also great to have a variety of wind producing music in the form of chimes. I enjoy a variety of wood and metal type chimes to mix up the tone and attitude of the music. Create a space in your garden for some nature jams with nature-inspired drums, flutes or shakers. This can be a fabulous way of getting the entire family involved in garden enjoyment. So as you lay out your garden this year, keep all the senses in mind, not only the visual. Texture, sound, smell and taste can be enjoyed in the garden to make it truly interactive and assist in opening your creative spirit.

When the soul wakes up it may interpret the lifetimes symbolism in order to continue evolving just like we would interpret a dream to learn. Going back to your question, there may be many parts of you that are similar in each lifetime, just like in a dream. Our soul travels with the same clique called a soul family. Members of this family will experience lifetimes together over and over again. So you may feel like you know someone that youve never met. You also may deal with similar issues in many lifetimes, but the only thing that absolutely remains constant is your intuitive gifts. Those come directly from your spirit and you always use those gifts to fulfill your spirit, soul and each particular life purpose.

By Dr. David Janssen, board-certified plastic surgeon
f you entered the workforce in the 1990s you probably have noticed you no longer occupy a place among the young demographic in the labor pool. When you look at yourself in the mirror to get ready for the day, you are seeing the signs of aging. Places that were once firm now feel soft and your clothing does not cling to your body like it used to. For women, the bra and waist lines, which were once smooth, now bulge. Men who used to see signs of strong muscles in their abdomen now see fat protruding over their belts.

fit properly! Go to a department store where you can have some assistance with measuring. Shoes. Look for comfortable, yet stylish; trendy, yet functional brands. Do not wear shoes to work that are scuffed or worn. Act smart be smart dress smart. Okay, this is not really part of your closet, but a good quality haircut and makeup are essential to complete your look. If youve got this great outfit and feel like a million bucks, but your hair style is 10 years old and you look washed out, it kind of kills the moment. Ask a professional for help. Not sure where to go? When you see someone with a great cut and style, ask her who her stylist is! When you spot a woman with very nice, natural looking makeup, ask her what product she uses! Black pants/brown pants black skirt/brown skirt. Choose the ones that fit properly, flatter your body shape and are the appropriate length. If they fit great, but need hemming, pay the extra money for alterations. White blouse. Look for a good, crisp, stain-free white blouse that you can tuck in with a jacket, leave out with a belt or leave unbuttoned with a cami underneath. The wrinkle-free blouses are wonderful! Little black dress. I encourage you to seek one out that is versatile. Whether you need it for a wedding or a funeral, you are ready to go. Functional accessories. Invest in a good watch, a nice pair of earrings or even a quality hairpiece. These little touches can make a difference. Manicure/pedicure. Just because. Cardigan sweaters. These come in handy to layer over tighter pieces, to have at your desk, to wear outside on a chillier day, etc. The cardigan sweater is a very functional piece.

Invest in your jeans! If you wear them 2-3 times per week, you will get your moneys worth for a quality pair.
1. Jeans. I would be a millionaire if I had a dollar for every time
I heard a woman say, Jeans are the hardest thing to shop for. Look at the size you think you are, a size above and a size below. Consider the rise, how they fit and how they feel when you try them on. Jeans tend to lose their shape after you have them on for a few hours, so look to see if they have lycra or not. A dark-wash pair is great for dressing up for a night out. A stone-wash pair is handy for everyday wear. Invest in your jeans! If you wear them 2-3 times per week, you will get your moneys worth for a quality pair that might cost a bit more.

decision to choose between synthetic vs. human hair is especially hard now that there are so many different and fancy names associated to numerous synthetic hair types: heat resist; natural fiber; mixed fiber; human-like; and human hair blend, just to name a few. Some hair companies actually put human hair in the name of their products in hopes that the wording will help sell more units. They like to give the illusion that there is actual human hair in their product. We have been told directly by companies exactly what to say and how to market their synthetic products. Do not be deceived by the intelligent word play, no matter the name, synthetic hair can never be human. Synthetic hair blends are basically the same, with the exception of a few. Most synthetic hair is made from nylon, plastic fibers and other man-made materials that are processed in a factory, then colored to imitate hair fibers. Synthetic blends look realistic for a time, but if you need this hair long term (everyday use) your investment in a synthetic will be short lived. Heat resist wigs and extensions have become very popular over the years as a cost effective alternative to human hair. However, many have come to realize that you can only use minimal heat, which makes it virtually impossible to hold a curl or straighten to a desired style. All heat resist hair breaks down with each stroke of the flat iron, curler or other thermal tools, which gives them a life cycle of about 2-3 months without proper restoration. Human hair feels better, lasts longer and can be styled as your own natural hair. Human hair takes longer to break down because it still has natural nutrients within its strands, which gives it a life span of one year or more (everyday use) with proper care. Some human hair is better than others; the more live the hair and the less processed, the longer it will last. Human hair, as opposed to synthetic, can also be colored, permed or relaxed. If you decide on this, it is suggested that you have the hair processed by a hair

professional. Chemical processing has the same effect on human hair as it would on your own natural hair. Processing techniques such as coloring, perming and relaxing take nutrients, stress the natural composition of the hair and speed up the damage process. Live human hair is unprocessed human hair that has been preserved in its natural state (unchanged). I have experienced live human hair lasting three years and still counting. However, maintenance is always key, no matter which type of hair you choose. For those choosing a wig, hair extensions or hairpieces for necessity, human hair is the best option. Human hair is reusable and will be more comfortable, lightweight and manageable. Using the knowledge of a wigmaster is your best source for choosing a wig, hairpiece or extension service that best suits your needs. Wigmasters spend a number of years specializing in not only the wig-making process, but they also have extensive knowledge in hair types and textures. Most people cannot tell by just looking if the hair they choose is live, processed or even synthetic. Wigmasters have been trained to tell the difference and will be anyones best source of hair knowledge.

ummer is almost here, which means lots of fun in the sun, and undoubtedly along with that bare arms and legs. This year, when you first break out your favorite go-to summer shorts or tank, you may find your poor skin in need a little postwinter rehab. This year, I encourage you to incorporate organic sugar scrub into your daily or weekly beauty regime for fabulous, healthy, glowing, ready-for-summer skin. Sometimes using soap alone to cleanse skin
is not enough to remove excess oil, impurities or dead skin cells. This is where an organic sugar scrub can be extremely beneficial. Sugar scrubs are good for all skin types and will help to exfoliate, clean skins surface, unclog pores, turnover cells and even minimize ingrown hairs. It can also help you get THE closest leg shave that you have ever experienced leaving legs oh-so-silky smooth. Today there is a wide variety of organic sugar scrubs on the market, or you can
make your own. While sugar scrub in general is good for all skin types, confirm when purchasing or making any scrub that the oil base such as rice bran, olive or grapeseed is complimentary to your specific skin type. Most importantly, make sure that the sugar included is organic. Organic sugar is not refined as heavily as conventional sugar, and as a result, may contain more of the vitamins and enzymes that existed in the natural sugar cane plant.
At Hendrickson Chiropractic and Wellness Center you will enjoy state of the art facilities in which you will discover the true wellness lifestyle. We will show you the natural way to better health without resorting to the use of medications.

When you regularly exfoliate your skin with a sugar scrub, youll quickly find your skin becoming healthier in appearance and function.
One of the most amazing properties found in an organic sugar is glycolic acid. This natural alpha hydroxy acid is used in many anti-aging and beautifying skin treatments for its ability to improve the skins appearance and texture. Glycolic acid is believed to help reduce wrinkles, scarring and even hyperpigmentation. It also protects against toxins and helps to exfoliate the skin, weakening the binding properties of lipids that hold dead skin cells together, exposing fresh and healthy live skin cells. When you regularly exfoliate your skin with a sugar scrub, youll quickly find your skin becoming healthier in appearance and function. After dead skin has been exfoliated, your bodys largest organ is enabled to work more efficiently expelling toxins and taking in nutrients. Regular use of organic sugar scrub can also help to combat ingrown hairs that may pop up on your arms, legs or elsewhere on the body. By removing dead skin cells and helping the skin to become
more moisturized and pliable, hairs can more easily release and point back out of the skin. For the best results, use a sugar scrub on legs while taking a shower. After rinsing the skin with a cleansing body wash, use scrub to exfoliating and condition the body. Spend a minute or two massaging the scrub on your skin, paying careful attention to dry areas like elbows and knees. Rinse the scrub, and with it all of your dead skins cells and dirt will be removed. If shaving, next shave legs as you normally would. The oil base will help to lubricate the razor leaving your legs looking and feeling amazingly refreshed and healthy. Try a scrub with a fragrance and herbal additions for an even more enjoyable experience. At Oliv 426, our customers like
to build custom scrubs starting with an organic sugar base, and then selecting their choice of oil, fragrance and herbal blend for additional skin nurturing benefits. Try fragrant essential oils such as tea tree oil, known for its antiseptic properties to prevent or fight off ingrown hairs, or lavender oil, known to fight inflammation and redness, and herbs like heather or lavender, for detoxifying and balancing benefits. And last but not least, as with any beauty regime component, have fun with it! Your skin will thank you.

ou may think that exercise and arthritis dont fit well together, but thats simply not the case. A common myth is that if you have arthritis, you should not exercise because it could damage your joints. However, research shows that exercise is an important tool in managing your arthritis. Starting an exercise program can seem like a daunting task, so talking to your doctor or physical therapist about how exercise can fit into your current treatment plan is always the best way to start. What types of exercises are best for you depends on your type of arthritis and which joints are involved. Your doctor or fitness professional can work with you to find the best exercise plan to give you the most benefit with the least aggravation of your joint pain. Even though your joints might be sore when you first start, exercise can help you improve your health and fitness without hurting your joints. Along with your current treatment program, exercise can: strengthen the muscles around your joints; help you maintain bone strength; give you more strength and energy to get through the day; make it easier to get a good nights sleep; help you control your weight; and make you feel better about yourself and improve your sense of well-being. You might think exercise will aggravate your joint pain and stiffness. Lack of exercise actually can make your joints even more painful and stiff. Thats because keeping your muscles and surrounding tissue strong is crucial to maintaining support for your bones. Not exercising weakens those supporting muscles, creating more stress on your joints. Again, always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program, but whether you begin with a physical therapist, personal trainer or other fitness professional, these are the exercises you might begin with:
Resistance exercises help you build strong muscles that help support and protect your joints.
of movement, such as raising your arms over your head or rolling your shoulders forward and backward. These exercises can be done daily or every other day.
Strengthening exercises
Resistance exercises help you build strong muscles that help support and protect your joints. Weight training is an example of a strengthening exercise that can help you maintain, or increase, your current muscle strength. Do your strengthening exercises every other day but take an extra day off if your joints are painful or if you notice any swelling. Two types of strengthening exercises are Isometric and Isotonic. Isometrics can help strengthen muscles without bending painful joints. Isometrics involve no joint movement, but rather strengthen muscle groups by using an alternating series of isolated muscle flexes and periods of relaxation. Isotonics involves joint mobility. However, this group of exercises is more intensive, achieving strength development through increased repetitions or by introducing increasing weight resistance such as with small dumbbells or stretch bands.
Aerobic exercise
Range-of-motion exercises
These exercises relieve stiffness and increase your ability to move your joints through their full range of motion. Range-of-motion exercises involve moving your joints through their normal range

Natures Pathways | May 2012
Aerobic or endurance exercises help with your overall fitness. They can improve your cardiovascular health, help you control your weight and give you more stamina. That way youll have more energy to get through your day. Try to work your way up to 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week. You can split up that time into 10-minute blocks if thats easier on your joints. Examples of aerobic activities include walking, swimming, lowimpact aerobic dance, skiing and biking, and may even include such daily activities as mowing the lawn, raking leaves or playing golf. Walking is one of the easiest aerobic exercises to begin because it requires no special skills or equipment other than a good pair
www.naturespathways.com
of supportive walking shoes, and its less stressful on joints than running or jogging. Biking can be a good choice for people with arthritis because it places less stress on knee, foot and ankle joints. Hydrotherapy, also called aqua therapy (water therapy), is a program of exercises performed in a pool. Aqua therapy may be easier on joints because the buoyancy of water takes some of the weight off the painful joints while providing resistance training. Swimming is also often recommended because there is minimal pressure on joints while in water. Appropriate recreational exercise, including sports, can be helpful to most people with arthritis. These activities are best preceded by a program of range-of-motion and strength exercises to reduce the chance of injury.
Other activities
Gentle forms of yoga and Tai Chi can help improve balance and help prevent falls. Be sure to tell your instructor about your condition and avoid positions or movements that can cause pain. Regardless of the exercise program you select, its important to begin slowly and choose a program you enjoy so that you maintain it. Make exercise part of your daily routine so that it becomes a lifetime habit.

ne concern voiced by many people is that money seems to evaporate from their checkbook. Where does it all go? If youre plagued with this dilemma, you might want to consider grandmas old envelope system. Putting reasonable, predetermined amounts of cash into envelopes labeled for groceries, gas, entertainment, personal care items and allowances on a biweekly basis will give you tangible spending boundaries. It also gives you the freedom to spend up to the limit of your cash allocation without fear of sabotaging other parts of your
budget. You also have the freedom to trade money among the envelopes, as long as the total amount spent remains within the parameters youve set. This system will give you a sense of control over your spending habits. Yes, I really do mean CASH in actual envelopes. While some people get paid every week and others get paid once a month, a biweekly (or semi-monthly) envelope system seems to work well for most people. A month can be a long time to wait to reallocate spending money, while filling envelopes every week can turn into

ast Wisconsin Savings Bank is celebrating 125 years of commitment to Fox Valley people. Although the banking industry has experienced significant changes over the years, East Wisconsin has remained committed to their original purpose of providing a good, safe place for people to save while helping members achieve the goal of homeownership. They truly have been walking the walk for 125 years. As a local, member-owned savings bank, East Wisconsin has continued their commitment to the needs and lifestyles of local individuals. It all began in Kaukauna, Wisconsin in 1887 with a vision of Fox Valley people pooling their hard-earned savings together to provide homeownership for family and friends. Back then, when D. J. Brothers drew up the building and loan associations charter in long hand; this was not an area of satisfied homeowners as it is today. There were no electric lights, no waterworks or sewers, no improved streets and very limited school facilities. The industrial revolution was in its infancy and railroad stops were just being constructed in the Valley. At that time, Norman J. Brokaw, a local manufacturer, had a vision of providing an opportunity for local workers to own a home. Mr. Brokaw knew that if workers were given the opportunity to own a home, their families would be stronger, they would be better employees and the community would reap the benefits. He saw the necessity for providing a means of financing the homes, and the building

ould you be chronically dehydrated? Many people are and never realize it. Our bodies require at least eight glasses of water per day, more during exercise, illness and hot weather. People often think that even if they dont actually drink water, they are getting enough by drinking coffee, tea, soft drinks, juice or beer. The truth is that many of these beverages have a diuretic effect, encouraging the
body to excrete water through urination, rather than retaining it. Think about a grape versus a raisin. The one is plump and full and juicy, containing all its natural water. The other is small, dry, shriveled, its water gone. Although a grape in dehydrated condition is still a good and useful fruit, the human body,
when dehydrated, does not function at its best and may be at risk for many ailments. The body is composed of nearly 75% water, and water is required for many of its essential functions. Water is utilized as a solvent and provides a means to transport nutrients, hormones and other elements. It is used to produce hydroelectric energy, especially in the brain. It is essential for maintaining cell structure. Water also enables proteins and enzymes to function more efficiently. Chronic dehydration can lead to a loss or decrease in these functions and may ultimately result in disease or can exacerbate an existing condition. Contrary to popular belief, dry mouth or thirst is not the first sign of dehydration. All life began in water; even the developing fetus is surrounded by water. When the body is deprived of water, a water rationing system takes effect. Histamine, a neurotransmitter, becomes active and redistributes water throughout the body. The order of circulatory priority is the brain, lungs, liver, kidneys and glands, then comes the muscles, bones and skin. During periods of dehydration, histamine insures that these vital organs have enough water

Water intake and fluid balance are among the least understood and most neglected areas of health.
to function properly. If enough water is not supplied, it must be taken from within the body. Chronic dehydration can cause histamine to become excessively active. This may result in symptoms that may be mistaken for other disorders such as allergies, asthma, heartburn, colitis, constipation, rheumatoid arthritis and chronic pains in various parts of the body, such as migraine headaches. Most of the bodys water is found within the cells, and the next largest amount is in the fluid surrounding the cells. If water is not replaced frequently, this surrounding fluid may continue to accumulate waste material and other contaminates. The pumps in your cell membranes may not work as efficiently because allowing dirty water into the cell can cause cellular damage or cell death. You wouldnt bathe in the same bath water without first cleaning the tub and adding fresh water. Why would you allow your cells to be surrounded by waste material? In conclusion, water is vital to good health and there is no substitute for it. However, years of chronic dehydration cannot be reversed overnight by simply drinking a couple of glasses of water. Rather, water intake should be gradually increased. How do you know if youre drinking enough water? Your urine should be clear or lightly colored. Darker colored urine may be an indication that your kidneys are working hard to concentrate the urine. Water intake and fluid balance are among the least understood and most neglected areas of health that I run into as a nutritionist. Here are some helpful tips to begin increasing your intake:
In the morning, fill a 64-ounce bottle and finish at least this much by the end of the day. Leave post-it notes or set cell phone alarm reminders. Keep water containers that measure fluid ounces to keep track of how much you drink. Create a buddy system with your co-worker, friend or family member to make sure you are drinking your water. Add lemon, orange or lime slices for flavor!

oga is an ancient practice that creates a sense of unity between the body, mind and soul. It brings balance to other parts of our daily lives so we can lead healthier and happier lives. Whether you enjoy hiking, running, biking, golfing, tennis or ball games in the summer, a yoga practice will keep you feeling strong and in the flow of your activity. As you move your activities outdoors to enjoy the warmth of the sun, it is important to lubricate your joints and massage your muscles out of winter constriction. Yoga is key to reducing injury and enhancing athletic performance. Summer sports often cause tightened muscle groups from repeatedly engaging one set of muscles. This overuse of particular muscle groups can cause pain, misalignment and over compensation by other muscles in your body. Some of the areas affected are the hamstrings, hip flexors and hip rotators, and shoulders. Tight or imbalanced muscles along the hips often result in low back pain for cyclists and swimmers; tennis players and golfers have shoulder problems; and knee pain is common with runners. If you play golf or baseball for example, and consistently swing the club or bat with one dominate arm, you are increasing the strength on one side of your back while decreasing it on the other, emphasizing one side of the body. This can result in back and shoulder pain. You can add to that by having problems in the hip, creating imbalances in the pelvis. Outdoor activities are often competitive, which can lead to stress. Power yoga can grab an athletes attention because it is a tough workout and a good stretch at a faster pace. However, a slowerpaced flow or restorative practice is best for relaxing muscles and calming the mind. Taking the time to slow down and gently stretch your tight muscles gives you the insight to know what is going on in your body and what areas you need to strengthen and heal. Deep breathing (pranayama) practices teach you how to move in and out of the pose safely and mindfully. Learning to breath properly will help you deal with a stressful situation and is an important tool in enhancing sport performance. Yoga has an abundance of rewards when practiced safely. When you give yourself the time to practice and meditate, you will learn

to breathe fully, have a healthier body, be able to cope with your emotions and deal with stress, and to find peace. The only regret I hear from my students about the practice of yoga is, I wish I would have started this years ago! Maybe I would not be dealing with this injury and pain. So what are you waiting for? Now is the time to get on your mat and experience the amazing benefits of yoga!

he wide range of elaborate athletic watches strapped to the wrists of runners, cyclists, swimmers and even those working out in the gym, is a testament to the preoccupation of time amongst athletes. They are used to timing workouts, pacing a run, aiming to cut off a couple minutes to achieve a personal record or even determining when one will get to quit working out. It is evident that while training, time is clearly on the mind. This should also be the case when coordinating your meals and snacks in order to maximize your workouts.

If you fast before your event, you could impair your performance by depleting energy, stored as glycogen in your liver, which your body needs for aerobic exercise. If you eat carbohydrates too close to your event, you raise your blood sugar and signal your body to release insulin, which leaves you with low blood sugar and causes your workout to take a hit. This also hinders the release of energy from your liver. Both circumstances can lead to muscle degradation, lack of energy and the proverbial hitting the wall, which Im sure we have all experienced at one time or another (I know I have). To exploit your grub to the fullest, choose low-fat, low-fiber foods, medium to low glycemic index carbohydrates, moderate protein and plenty of fluids several hours prior to your workout. This will allow your body time to clear your gut of its contents so you can avoid cramping up while allowing for fluid absorption for hydration, maintaining an appropriate level of blood sugar and preserving glycogen stores, which are all integral components of achieving the most out of your workout.
For endurance athletes (>90 minutes), those in extreme environments (extreme heat, cold or altitude) or those with long, intense, interval training workouts, eating additional carbohydrates throughout the workout can prevent hitting the wall during a workout by maintaining blood sugar levels. It is also important to refuel the body within thirty minutes to one hour post workout. The stores of energy (glycogen) in the muscles are low because the body was feeding off of that energy. As a result, the muscles are more willing to replenish those stores with as much energy as possible. Eating a carbohydrate rich (high glycemic may be even more effective) snack or meal within thirty minutes to one hour of exercise can provide the muscles with the energy they need. This will help fuel the next workout while aiding an athlete in meeting their daily needs. It is also important to add protein to the post-workout snack or meal to enhance muscle protein building and repair. Snacks, such as our Trek bars, are packed with protein, whole grains and healthy fats, such as mono and polyunsaturated
*Remember, individual needs vary person to person. Find what you can personally tolerate and what meets your needs to sustain energy and a healthy body weight. fats. The protein will help build muscle and enzymes, and repair cells. The whole grains will fuel you up with the bodys preferred energy source, while providing you with a wide array of beneficial antioxidants and cholesterol-fighting capabilities. The healthy fats will work to improve your cholesterol, control blood sugars, decrease risk of heart disease, and aid in the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals. Not to mention that the fiber from the whole grains, the protein and the healthy fats should keep you feeling full during a long day of hiking, biking or just hanging with friends.

hat is all the buzz about tapping? Let me tell you! It is all about Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT. Its origins lie in ancient Chinese medicine from 5000 years ago and the development of acupuncture, a healing technique that uses needles on areas on the energy meridians or the path through which the life-energy of our bodies flows. Acupuncture was not developed to treat emotional problems, but physical ones. EFT has also been named emotional acupuncture, of course, using a tapping technique instead of needles. It was developed to heal emotional problems. What practitioners of EFT have found is that the emotional and energetic releases brought about by EFT frequently result in profound physical healings. The Discovery Statement of EFT is that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the bodys energy system. There has been a great deal of medical research done showing that stress causes chemical changes in the brain, and these changes influence the state of our physical wellbeing, as do unresolved emotional issues. More and more research on EFT has shown its positive efficacy on emotional issues. EFTs history is also based on Applied Kinesiology (which uses muscle testing to determine the appropriateness of any form of treatment), developed by Dr. George Goodheart. In the early
Life in Balance
LLC
1960s, he substituted simple manual pressure or tapping, for needles on acupuncture points and found that he could obtain the same beneficial results. In the early 1970s, Dr. John Diamond, a psychiatrist, took Dr. Goodhearts work a step further by developing Behavioral Kinesiology, which adds stating or thinking an affirmation (a positive statement) while at the same time manipulating acupuncture points. In the early 1980s, Dr. Roger Callahan, who specialized in anxiety and phobias, put tapping and focusing on the problem he was trying to help his patients resolve, together. He believed this technique would remove or lessen the fear causing the problem. His success was so great that he started to use this technique on other emotional issues. During his experimentations he found that he used specific sequences of acupoints for different emotional issues. He would use Applied Kinesiology to determine the sequence needed on an individualistic basis for each of his patients. He called these sequences algorithms. His method of treatment was known as The Callahan Techniques and later named Thought Field Therapy, or TFT, another form of tapping technique other than EFT. In the later 1980s, Dr. Patricia Carrington, psychologist, and Gary Craig, an engineer and personal performance coach who studied under Dr. Callahan, tested Dr. Callahans techniques and found that a single algorithm method could be just as effective as the more elaborate procedures of TFT. This single algorithm method is the basis of EFT and can be used for a myriad of problems ranging from pain relief, anger, addictions, weight loss, anxiety, trauma, depression, fears and phobias, allergies, respiratory problems, blood pressure, school, sports and sexual performance issues, serious diseases (from migraines to cancer), relationship issues, womens, mens and childrens issues, to name a few. In other words, for almost everything. Gary Craig gave this method the name EFT. Dr. Carrington named her technique Acutap, but after studying EFT she started to only use this method. In 2000, Dr. Carrington developed the EFT Choices Method, which changes
www.naturespathways.com
the process of EFT by adding individualized affirmations instead of the ones commonly used in Gary Craigs method. The basic recipe for EFT is: The Setup; The Sequence; 9 Gamut Procedure; The Sequence (again); The Reminder Phrase; and Adjustments for Subsequent Rounds. Your energy system is a set of subtle electrical circuits and is subject to a form of electrical interference that can block the balancing effect of the tapping. In the Setup Phase, the blockage (called Psychological Reversal) must be removed for the rest of the technique to work. A neutralizing affirmation is repeated three times while you rub your Sore Spot or tap on your Karate Chop point. The Sequence is the exact order of where to tap on the end points of the major energy meridians in the body and the method by which the energy block in the energy system is balanced out. You tap with your fingertips of the index and middle finger; tapping about seven times on each point while repeating a reminder phrase. The points are the eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone, under arm, below nipple, side of thumb, index finger, middle finger, baby finger and karate chop. You also repeat your affirmation while tapping. The 9 Gamut Procedure fine tunes the brain by using eye movements, counting and humming to stimulate the brain. Through connecting nerves, certain parts of the brain are stimulated with the eye movements. The creative side of the brain, the right side, is engaged when you hum, and the digital side of the brain, the left, is engaged when you count. After the 9 Gamut Procedure, you repeat the sequence again. The Reminder Phase is simply a word or short phrase that describes the problem and is repeated out loud each time you tap one of the points in the Sequence. Subsequent Round Adjustments are done when only partial relief is achieved. The technique of EFT seems to be very simple and can be used by lay people and professionals with their clients, but it is not to be taken lightly. Our emotions and particular problems have layers to them and each layer must be dealt with to resolve the problem. EFT can do this, but it should only be done with someone that is trained and skillful. There are not many side effects as this technique is not invasive, and Gary Craig reported that at one time with over 100,000 people using the technique that under 1% had complaints. These were in the form of feeling nauseous, feeling worse, crying or other forms of distress due to bringing up memories that have been repressed. Some people can have these results just thinking about their problem, or reliving a trauma or stressful memory, so it is uncertain if EFT was the cause of the complaints. If EFT is a technique that you want to use by yourself, then get training. It is not advisable to go on the computer, get the steps and do it. As a holistic psychotherapist, energy therapist and EFT practitioner that studied under Gary Craig, I have seen situations where only a professional who is trained in their field and EFT will know how to handle a person if they have abreactions due to their serious illness or problem. The best policy to take is, Dont go where you dont belong. Use common sense and do not try to alleviate ailments that are beyond your capacity or training.

e all experience grief. Unfortunately, at one time or another everyone will suffer a loss of someone dear to them. Although people grieve in different ways depending on the nature of their relationships and their past experiences with loss, the grieving process is quite normal and necessary. Grieving helps an individual adapt and accept the reality of their loss, work through the pain and adjust to all the life changes caused by the death of their loved one. Going through the grieving process is very difficult for people in general; but for people with dementia, the process can be far more complicated. People with dementia experience grief, but their reaction to their loss is largely affected by their own cognitive understanding of what has happened to their loved one, the connection they had with the person they are grieving for and how well they can express their sorrow. It is wrong to assume that because a person cannot remember the name of their missing loved one they do not feel that loss in their lives. Those with dementia generally live with feelings that things are not right, or a constant state of wrong-being, but are usually unable to put their finger on what the problem is. Most individuals suffering with dementia are somewhat aware of their confusion and live with grief over lost abilities, memories and understanding. Add in the loss of someone dear to them and their confusion can be compounded. Grief and the mourning process can be experienced by those with even advanced dementia, regardless of their cognitive ability to resolve or make sense of their feelings. So in most cases it is better to share the news of a death than to try to pretend nothing has changed. There are several considerations to keep in mind when helping a bereaved person with dementia work through grief. Choose carefully when to share bad news According to Melanie Bunn, RN and Alzheimers training consultant, consideration must be given to the bereaved persons cognitive condition when choosing when to share the news of a loss. Select a time of day when the bereaved is rested and feels comfortable and safe. Many people suffering from sundowners, a type of dementia, find late afternoons and evenings especially challenging and would be better able to process difficult news in the morning hours. Choose carefully how to share bad news Have a familiar and trusted person talk to the bereaved in a clear, calm and simple manner. It is best to have only one person relay the news of a death. People with dementia can be deeply affected by the emotional climate of grieving family members and respond with increased
Natures Pathways | May 2012
agitation and restlessness. Experts advise avoiding abstract phrases like passed away. It is much more effective to plainly state that the person died. Keep sentences short and do not overwhelm the bereaved person with dementia with too much information at once. Be prepared to frequently repeat the information as they will need time and repetition to process it. Do not be surprised by a delayed reaction or lack of response. Help the immediate grief process Those suffering from dementia can benefit by participating in the rituals of death. According to the article, Sharing Bad News, by Melanie Bunn, it may be necessary to modify rituals to make them more workable for the person with dementia. She suggests private visitations rather than participating in public gatherings, attending the funeral, but not the burial, or hosting a local memorial ceremony rather than traveling great distances to attend a funeral. After the funeral, it is helpful for the individual suffering from dementia to reminisce about their loved one. Talking about memories while looking at a photo of the deceased will aid in the grieving process. Often the person with dementia needs help expressing their grief and speaking to them using empathetic phrases will help them verbalize their mourning. According to Alzheimer Scotlands article, Loss and bereavement in people with dementia, phrases like, You sound like you really miss him. Tell me what you miss about him most. aid those who have a hard time finding words to express the emotions they feel. Help with long-term grief Constant assessment of the cognitive state of the bereaved is very important. Ignoring the mood of the day and trying to force a person with dementia to understand a death can be detrimental to the grieving process. Try to have all people in contact with the person diagnosed with dementia be consistent and patient as they work through their grief over time. By focusing on the person with dementia and validating their emotions, even though the source of the emotions are lost to them, the grieving process will be made easier for the person suffering from dementia and the entire family.

contains many nutrients necessary for plant growth. It stimulates beneficial soil microorganisms and attracts earthworms. Unlike chemical fertilizers, the benefits of which are a flash in the pan, composts nutrients are absorbed into the soil and plant roots slowly over time. Compost doesnt wash out if there happens to be a heavy rain after application. Besides adding nutrients, compost improves water retention in sandy soils and binds to clay forming larger particles that allow for better drainage. Does your lawn need a boost? Use compost as a top-dressing. Core your lawn first, then spread finely screened compost all over your yard. The slow release of nutrients means that compost keeps on working for weeks into months allowing for steady root growth. The compost in freshly cored yards also prevents soil compaction through aeration. Mixing compost with grass seed helps to repair areas of the yard needing improvement. Compost mulch protects the soil from extreme heat and cold while providing slow-release nutrients into the soil. Apply thick and chunky compost around trees and bushes, this layer of compost should go twice as far out as you expect the tree or bush canopy to grow. Do not have the mulch touch the tree or bush. The compost will slowly absorb into the soil feeding the tree or bush when the frost leaves the ground in spring. The mulched area will also keep weed growth down. Compost can be added to a potted plant at any time whether you are starting a new plant or transplanting. By mixing one part compost with three parts potting soil, you will supply many vitamins and nutrient-rich minerals to the potted plant. You may also continually top off plants with compost and then water through it. Compost tea is not a beverage, but
rather, a liquid form of compost that can be poured directly onto lawns and gardens. Place active compost in a porous bag and soak in water for several hours until the nutrients have seeped into the water. Compost tea needs to be used within 24 hours of creation. It can be poured directly onto the soil, sprayed onto the leaves (it creates a great shine) or poured into the catch basin of a planter. Regardless of whether you made your own compost or just bought a bag of quality commercial compost, your lawn, garden and plants will thank you. Remember these benefits are not just a one-time effect. As the compost slowly releases its nutrients, your plants will continually thrive. all the menu items Famous Daves is known for. We devoured the Texas Beef Brisket, St. Louis-Style Spareribs, Country-Roasted Chicken, Creamy Coleslaw, Famous Fries, Wilbur Beans, corn on the cob and corn bread muffins! The guys finished this quickly and had to try all the perfectly spiced Famous Daves BBQ sauces on the table. My personal favorite was the Devils Spit, which had a great amount of spice and tang. All of this is served in a metal garbage can lid to remind diners that the very first smoker that Famous Dave made was out of a garbage can! My favorite appetizer was easily the Smoked Salmon Spread. This is made with Famous Daves own Hickory Smoked Salmon, cream cheese, capers and chipotle peppers and is served with firegrilled flatbread that is cooked perfectly with just enough spice. If you like salmon, you cannot leave without trying this! The homemade BBQ chips come out to every table and are a great opportunity to try all the sauces provided at the table. There is a sauce for everyone, no matter the preferred spice level! One diner ordered the Citrus Grilled Salmon for his meal. After

finishing it off very quickly, he said, This salmon has a perfect sweet glazed taste and is done to perfection. His guest ordered the Citrus Grilled Shrimp and she agreed that entre was perfectly done. It melted in my mouth, with just enough spice and sweet mixed with a bit of lime flavor. One diner could not leave without ordering what Famous Daves is known for the ribs! When asked how they were, he was rendered speechless because he didnt want to ruin the experience of eating them. They were just that good! For me, the side dishes were as good as the entrees, as I enjoyed the crunchy corn on the cob and house-made cornbread. Im a lover of coleslaw and Famous Daves has some of the best Ive had, with a sweet and peppery flavor. As if we could eat anymore food, we had to finish the meal off with the house-made pecan praline sauce bread pudding. I normally do not even eat bread pudding, but I gave it a try and Im so glad I did! This reminded me of a southern tiramisu. All of Famous Daves desserts are made in-house and are delicious! Thank you for this fun and delicious dining experience! We had a couple diners that had never been to Famous Daves before and Famous Daves we will all certainly be back many 1170 N. Westhill Blvd., times. It is also great to know there Appleton is not only the traditional Famous 920.991.9700 Daves food, but also salads and www.famousdaves.com the new Citrus Grill healthy menu options available.

Aloe

loe is a succulent plant of the lily family (Liliaceae) that is indigenous to East and South Africa. It has been introduced across the warmer parts of the world and grows readily in the southern part of the U.S. There are quite a few varieties each offering varying amounts of active compounds. The variety Aloe Vera has been used for ages for its many healing properties. Having an aloe houseplant on hand is a must as herbal first aid. The best juices come from plants that are three years or older. The most common use for aloe vera, besides soothing burns, is for healing and soothing inflamed tissues, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. The effects on the gastrointestinal tract range from soothing

stomach irritation, removing toxins from the colon, stimulating bile secretion and peristalsis, and reducing bowel transit time. Because of these effects on the gastrointestinal tract, aloe is recommended for many complaints from stomach to colon irritations. Aloe vera helps improve allergy symptoms by enhancing the removal of allergens and toxins from the body. Aloe vera stimulates cell regeneration and has been used to heal and mend tissues after radiation. Aloe can also be used as a natural underarm deodorant, or it can be applied to an incision to prevent scar tissue from forming. Aloe excels in healing many skin and mucous membrane ailments. A database of studies collected at GreenMedInfo.com includes benefits for IBS, burns, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, oral lichen planus and much more. The aloe leaf can be broken open and the juice used directly. If the juice is bottled, it must be preserved to stay fresh. The capsules of dehydrated aloe are handy to have in a first aid kit. The opened capsules can be mixed with water forming a paste to use topically for sunburn. Or the capsules can
be taken internally to soothe the stomach or absorb toxins from the bowel. The powdered aloe has more of a laxative effect, whereas the juice functions more as a yin tonic. It is rare, but some people can have an allergy to aloe vera, so apply a small amount to the underarm before using. Pregnant women should avoid taking aloe internally.

Hair conversations

etting a great, new, salon look shouldnt be like winning the lottery. Or, a hit and miss situation. Great hair can be achieved! All it takes is a healthy exchange of talking and listening like any great relationship. Our job as hairdressers is to LISTEN to you about your concerns and styling needs. Then, we can give back information we need to share (this means the whole picture, not just from your neck up). Finally, we can collaborate in order to get a great cut.
covering them or its cut above them and doesnttouch them? Is an inch an inch or is it really two inches? Communicate clearly and make sure you both understand the meaning. Did you bring pictures? Pictures bring a visual aid into the conversation. They can be a great aid in determining the desired result, and how it will look with your particular hair texture and density. They provide information as to what your ultimate goal is for your hair. Hopefully your stylist can show you more pictures of what you like about that look and determine what isnt best for you from them. Use friends or people you see to get references for good hairdressers. Check out the salon first. Is it clean and inviting? What kind of products do they carry? Are they safe?Do they have style books on hand? Do they focus on one client at a time, or are they processing a color while cutting a head of hair? A great stylist will have asked you all of the above questions and MORE!It is our job to be good communicators. Its our job to give you a look you can wear and love. For me personally, I would have to also know how the products they use on me rate. Were they checked out on the Environmental Working Groups Web site Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database? Many of the products in use now can cause allergies, organ toxicity, cancer and irritation to the lungs, eyes and skin. Remember your skin absorbs and is not a barrier to chemicals!

How much time do you like to spend on your hair? Do you have 20 minutes or an hour? Maybe some days you have more time and would like to achieve a second or third look from the same cut. What problems need to be addressed? Do you have a pesky spot, a cowlick? Or, maybe dry, brittle hair? Is it too thin and fine? Maybe you swim or have iron in your water. Tell your hairdresser the things you love and hate about your hair. She should have explanations and suggestions for you on why your hair may behave a particular way. Do you have special length considerations? Bangs cut above or below the eyebrow, babydolled, straight across or U shaped? This kind of information is crucial. f you were to describe the difference between an older persons face and a younger persons face, the first thing you might mention is the natural wrinkling of the skin that occurs as we age. And certainly this is a noticeable factor. But there is another, more subtle factor that also determines how old you look. That factor is your smile. Many changes can occur with the teeth that can make you look older. First of all is the shade. Over time, teeth naturally tend to darken due to the years of exposure to things like coffee, tea, red wine, smoking, etc. This staining becomes imbedded in the teeth, and thus cannot be removed by brushing or cleaning in the dental office. Fortunately, we now have the ability to whiten the teeth back to a more youthful-looking shade with our professional whitening systems. The shade of the teeth is an obvious factor in how old you look, but there is another factor that you may not have thought of. That factor is the shape of the teeth. See, as you age, your teeth can slowly wear away. This can be dramatic or it can be quite subtle, but either way, tooth wear makes you look older. In extreme cases, teeth can wear down to half the original size or even more. In subtle cases, the edges of the teeth become flattened so all of the front teeth are the same length and look almost like someone took a file and flattened them out.

appily, I now enjoy walking into my home without getting a hideous feeling looking at my countertops! Since buying our home in 2009, we have made many updates and by far the best decision we made was going with Darboy Stone & Brick for our kitchen and bathroom countertops. It seemed that every update made did not make as big of a difference as this one. This is by far the best home improvement we have made so far, said my fiance upon completion of the project. Although the thought of paying more for granite versus a traditional laminate scared me a bit, the value it adds to the home is well worth it. I did some checking around at many granite companies before I went to talk with Mark Vanden Heuvel at Darboy Stone & Brick and they were by far the most professional and helpful company out there. Mark offered convenient financing options that made the home improvement very affordable for us. Becky was a tremendous help assisting me in choosing colors that would work with our cupboards. She allowed us to bring home a few samples so we could better see what looked best. They had many different colors and pricing tiers available. Along with the countertops, Darboy Stone & Brick offers different options for colors with their Kohler sinks and faucets. When we made our decision to go ahead with the project, I called Becky, who had a representative out measuring within two days. After that visit, my countertops were here within a week! Not only that, but Becky
Natures Pathways | May 2012
offered the services of a local plumber, who they trust, to help with the disconnection and re-connection of our plumbing. I didnt even need to be home the day the granite was installed. We just let them in that morning and by the time we got home from work, it was done! I was the first one home and got on the phone right away with my fiance and said, I feel like we live in After someone elses fancy, expensive house! He couldnt wait to get home and see it! Since putting in our countertops, we have had two friends go with Darboy Stone & Brick for their granite as well. Both were equally impressed with their service. And they leave you some polisher and a bonus cutting board to match! Not only does Darboy Stone & Brick offer many granite options, but this family owned business also provides brick and stone, fireplaces and stoves, and limestone and landscaping materials. Darboy Stone & Brick is Northeast Wisconsins premier dealer in all things fireplace. Their selection includes nine of the leading brand names in the industry; from wood to gas, inserts to stoves and custom surrounds. Their showroom features one of the largest collections of fireplaces anywhere in Wisconsin and they only employ professional and certified installers.

n a recent girls day in Madison, I was reminded of the importance of taking time for yourself to relax. You know, give yourself a little downtime. We become so wrapped up in our to do lists most days that we never even consider what we need to do for our own well-being! Here are some simple ideas to incorporate a bit of relaxation and enjoyment into your life. Try one or try them all. I hope youll find you enjoy the experience enough to make it a higher priority in your life. Try a walking meditation, its easy and very relaxing. There are CDs and downloads you can purchase for this, but it really is quite simple. Put on your walking shoes and head outside. You wouldnt want to have a pet with you. And if you are with another person, just agree at the start that you are meditating so you wont be visiting until you are finished. First, stand still and take in your surroundings. Then as you start walking, beginning with your toes, feel everything. Feel the air between your toes as you walk. Feel the fabric of your socks against your skin. Dont judge, simply feel it, experience it. Move up your entire body doing this. Feel the air against your skin and the sounds of nature in your ears. See the beauty around you. You can even make a point when looking at trees, to look between the branches rather than at the branches. This can be done with tall grass and flowers too. Its a fun new perspective to take. And when you are all done, chances are good that you never thought about that to do list at all! Try something new that youve always wanted to do. This is your

chance to express yourself creatively. It could be anything from painting, singing, taking photographs, playing music, dancing, drawing or even rearranging the furniture in your home. Anything that allows you to express yourself is a great way to add relaxation into your busy day. Again, steer clear of any judgment or criticism of what you produce. Its all about the process, not the quality of the finished product. Listen to your heart about where to spend your time. Dont let guilt dictate your schedule. If you have a parent asking you to come over for dinner but you really, really wanted to take that solitary walk in the woods, lovingly explain it just isnt going to work out this time. The other person may be disappointed, but why is it we put others happiness ahead of our own? The benefits of listening to and following your heart far outweigh the stress, guilt and animosity that can be created by decisions made out of obligation. Pay attention to topics or items that keep coming up in your life. There may be a sign in there of something new you could pursue for a hobby, pastime or craft. When I look back on how often the topic of meditation came up in my life going back to 1989 I am amazed. Of course it took until the past two years for me to actually connect the dots, there must be an openness and willingness to listen and see what messages you are being sent. Finally, go for it! As a dear friend often says, Let nothing stop you. Isnt that a fantastic quote? Another is, Just do it! While trying new things can be a little intimidating,
you will learn through the process and one must never regret having gained new knowledge. There are two things that can never be taken away from us: love and knowledge. Now lets let go of our stress and get out there and build some new experiences!

hen thinking about ones health, it is critical to consider ones fitness regimen. In the world we live in today, it is extremely easy to consume fast food on a daily basis, as it is the most convenient way to get it. People who eat a lot of fast food may not always think of the negative effects it may cause. Not only is weight gain a concern, but other health issues may arise by consuming too much salty, greasy food. Exercising daily, and watching how much, and what kind of food one consumes, are of high importance. According to the Arthritis Foundation, excess weight is known to aggravate fibromyalgia symptoms such as pain sensitivity and sleep disturbances and reduce quality of life among patients. New research now
Those who receive in-home health care can help prevent weight gain by going through rigorous exercises with their care workers.
shows, the more severe the obesity, the more severe the fibromyalgia symptoms; and those who have a body mass index, or BMI, of 35 or higher experience the worst symptoms. Those who receive in-home health care can help prevent weight gain by going through rigorous exercises with their care workers, which may consist of range of motion (ROM) exercises or physical therapy sessions. According to the National Association for Home Care & Hospice, physical therapists (PTs) work to restore the mobility and strength of patients who are limited or disabled by physical injuries through the use of exercise, massage and other methods. PTs often alleviate pain and restore injured muscles with specialized equipment. They also teach patients and caregivers special techniques for walking and transfer. When reflecting upon ones health, as one who may be elderly or disabled, it is important to consider exercise regimens suitable to ones needs. In-home health care providers can teach new techniques, and provide patients with exercises appropriate for them, in the comfort of their own homes.

am called Green Cedar Woman. All of my life, I have paid attention. Attention to visions, and to the dreams of sleeping and the dreams of waking. That is how I learned to ask the trees, stones, and insects to show me their beauty and healing powers. Sometimes I had to pay attention for a long, long time. Sometimes their answers came quickly as a deep inner knowing, a sensation of energy, moving colors or even words. I believe we all have these powers as children, but they become dulled with disuse, as we become so busy learning to think, believe and do what others expect of us or at least to pretend that the spider did not ask for and promise respect or that visions are only childish imagination. So perhaps you have forgotten knowing these things. But if you say you have never felt a stone on the beach or forest path urge you to take it with you, you are lying. I became Green Cedar Woman by loving and listening to the cedars growing around my home on the shores of Lake Michigan. Blackwolf and his teacher, Eagle Woman, invited me to healing and teaching sweat lodges on the reservation. Eagle Woman showed me the proper way to gather cedar for the Spirit Trail. Spirits enter the sacred fire and the hot stones within. Once the hot stones are brought inside, Spirits follow the Cedar Spirit Trail over the altar and into the lodge. Fifty-four cedars surround my house, a living rosary. Some form the tall, thick windbreak. These have great dignity and solemn power. At first, they declined my invitations. The small ones appear younger, but these have been kept trimmed for decades to fit the landscape. Their energy is light and playful, and they joyfully agreed to give me their green leaves for the Spirit Trail. So Joseph Many Horses gave me my Spirit name, Green Cedar Woman. Naming ceremonies are sacred. That name is not how Im known to family and friends. Its an energy identity by which Spirits know me. Blackwolf and I are both therapists. At one time we worked together at a beautiful small clinic sitting on a bluff over Lake Michigan. One day he rushed into my office and asked if I would leave work early to come with him to a naming ceremony. He was giving a name to a Mohican woman to honor her generosity. I couldnt attend, but decided to send a gift in her honor. My room held many treasures of pictures, feathers, stones, stone statues and stuffed toys.
www.naturespathways.com
The large, heavy stone buffalo began to speak. It had decided to depart from my office and travel to the naming ceremony. I resisted this. That stone buffalo was so beautiful. It was brown and gold and white, with a few tiny clear crystals. My mind began to make excuses and think of other things to send. But it continued to speak, quietly, but firmly, until I accepted its decision. I wrapped it in a piece of red cotton cloth and gave it to Blackwolf to take to the naming ceremony. As it left my hands, there was a brief fleeting sense of wonder. I felt faith that as we give freely and let go, we receive all that we need. No need to question or resist or strive or demand. I had no further thoughts of the stone buffalo. No one, but Blackwolf, knew that it had been gifted to a woman to honor her new Spirit name. But a week or two later, one of my patients came in carrying something heavy in a plastic bag. She said that it was something that had been very important to her, but no longer fit into her life. She thought I might like it. It was a green stone buffalo. I think it was Spirits humorous way of showing me a Truth about giving and receiving and listening to stones.

y healthy foods list consists of items that are super nutrient dense. That is, they have more nutrients per calorie than most other foods. They have also been proven to contain vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that will help prevent an array of chronic diseases. These super foods are perfect for heart-healthy, low-fat cooking and most fit perfectly into a lower-carb lifestyle as well.
3. Citrus fruits
The citrus bioflavonoids in oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit have anti-cancer and antioxidant properties. Many of these citrus bioflavonoids have also been shown to have antiinflammatory and blood clot inhibiting abilities.
2. Broccoli
Broccoli (and other cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower and cabbage) helps fight cancer, especially that of the breast, colon and lung. It boosts the immune system. Broccoli also contains antioxidants and a substance called sulforaphane, which research has shown to be a powerful cancer fighter and preventer.
4. Nuts

Tomatoes contain high levels of lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant and as such helps to protect the cells in our bodies from oxidative stress leading to free radical damage.
5. Salmon
The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon and other fatty fish help prevent heart disease and stroke by lowering the bodys rate of blood clotting. These fatty acids also smooth out the blood, helping stabilize blood sugar levels; thus protecting us against type 2 diabetes.
8. Turkey
Turkey is one of the leanest protein foods and is low in calories, making it an excellent healthy food choice. Turkey also contains selenium, which has been shown to inhibit cancer development, improve the immune system and aid in the stimulation of our thyroid hormone.
You can see that my list of super foods includes some of our favorites. By including these on a regular basis in a healthy diet, you can easily gain many health benefits. Making healthy food choices just got easier!

rain garden is a shallow depression that is planted with native wetland or wet prairie wildflowers and grasses, and that allows rain water to collect and filter naturally into the ground. Rather than letting rainwater wash pollutants into local water bodies, a rain garden captures that water and slowly filters out those pollutants. Nutrients are used by the plants and pesticides are broken down by microorganisms in the soil. Rain gardens allow 30% more water to soak into the ground than a lawn. They also attract birds, butterflies and mosquito-eating dragonflies. Rain gardens are best planted in the springtime for ease of plant establishment. Planting in the summer will work, but requires more care and watering for plant establishment to take place. Next, pick a site that has good drainage, is at least 10 feet away from the house, is not over a septic system, and has a slope between 1% and 10%. Full sun will allow the largest selection of plants. There are options
for part sun to part shade as well. Also, keep in mind that in the Fox Valley, we tend to have clay soils with more alkalinity than acidity. A soil test will let you know exactly what you have. To determine drainability, do a percolation test: dig an 8-inch deep hole and fill with water, allow to drain and refill; if it drains again within two hours, the drainability is acceptable. Before digging, call diggers hotline: #811 or 800.242.5811. Rain gardens can run anywhere from 100-300 square feet. A 10 foot by 10 foot by 6-8 inch garden works well in sandier soil. A 10 foot by 20 foot by 2-6 inch garden works well in heavy clay soils. The size and number of beds will depend on how much surface area there is to collect from, so observe the movement of water in your yard. Generally, rain gardens are placed on the perimeter of a yard to capture rain (or sump pump) water before it washes into a roadway. Use native hardy perennials that can
survive in wet and dry conditions. Rain gardens are not supposed to be flooded all of the time. They are obviously very wet in spring, but will dry out in the summer months. Plants should bloom at different times, and be of varied heights, shapes and textures. Here is just a sample plant list of the many combinations that can be created: Spotted Joe Pye (Eupatorium maculatum) Prairie Blazing Star (Liatris pycnostachya) Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) Ironweed (Vernonia fasciculate) Culvers Root (Veronicastrum virginicum) Sneezeweed (Helenium autumnale) Wild Blue Flag Iris (Iris virginica shrevei) Fox Sedge (Carex vulpinoidea) Palm Sedge (Carex muskingumensis) Plant spacing is relatively tight in rain gardens so that water uptake can happen more quickly and the good plants crowd out the weeds. Dig the area to desired 87 depth and use the extra soil to build

or decades, osteoarthritis has simply been considered a part of aging but not anymore. Recent research shows that older people dont have to suffer from osteoarthritic pain. Also, surprisingly, people much younger than 65 can develop osteoarthritis.
What is osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis (OA), or degenerative joint disease, affects more than 20 million Americans and is more common in women than in men. The disease affects cartilage slippery tissue on the ends of bones that meet in a joint. Normally, cartilage helps bones glide over one another. In an OA patient, however, the cartilage is broken down and eventually wears away. As a result, instead of gliding, bones rub against each other, causing pain, swelling and loss of motion. Although the majority of patients with OA are 65 and older, recent research shows that OA is not a by-product of aging. Family history of OA, being overweight, lack of exercise and prior joint injuries are suggested as OA risk factors.
OA is diagnosed through a combination of clinical history, patient examination and x-rays. Other tests, such as drawing fluid from the joint, are sometimes used. Signs of OA include: steady or intermittent joint pain; joint stiffness after sitting, sleeping or not moving for a long time; swelling or tenderness in the joints; and a crunching feeling or the sound of bones rubbing against each other. If you experience any of these signs, consult your health care provider. While the diagnosis is relatively easy to make, it is often harder to establish whether or not OA causes the patients symptoms. That is why the treating doctor needs to not only make the diagnosis, but also rule out other disorders and conditions that can make the symptoms worse. Timely diagnosis and treatment can help manage pain, improve function and slow the degeneration.

Doctors of chiropractic are trained to relieve the pain and improve joint function through natural therapies, such as chiropractic manipulation, massage techniques and physiotherapy.
Should osteoarthritis patients exercise?
Exercise is one of the best forms of OA treatment and prevention. It strengthens the muscular support around the joints and improves and maintains joint mobility and function. In addition, exercise helps control weight and improve the patients mood and outlook; important factors influencing the severity of the symptoms.
a berm around the lower perimeter. Plants should be watered twice a week after planting until established (about one growing season). Once rain gardens are established, they are very low maintenance, requiring only to be cut back in early spring to about 6-8 inches. While establishment is taking place, weeding is crucial. The idea is that the desired plants will grow, spread and crowd out the weeds. Some plant varieties may not do well and should be replaced with plants that have proven themselves. Fertilizing should not be necessary since native plants thrive without it and nutrients are already being carried into the bed by runoff. It would also defeat the purpose of installing the rain garden. When cutting back the bed, it is also important to remember to leave the seed heads in the bed to further discourage the establishment of weeds. One of the many functions of soil is to filter water. Let it do its job and help us clean our water!

Low-impact or non-weight-bearing activities such as swimming, stationary training and light weight training work best for OA patients. Use strengthening exercises if the key muscle groups that relate to the function of the joints are weakened by degeneration. If you are overweight, start exercising carefully, so as to not put too much stress on the knee and ankle joints. Stair climbing, water aerobics, Theraband workouts and similar exercises will help to keep the joints mobile without straining them. Learn to read the bodys signals and know when to stop, slow down or rest.
Doctors of chiropractic, by the nature of their work, can detect the earliest degenerative changes in the joints. They see the impact of degenerative changes in the spine, as well as in the hands, hips, knees and other weight-bearing joints. Doctors of chiropractic are also trained to relieve the pain and improve joint function through natural therapies, such as chiropractic manipulation, massage techniques and physiotherapy. Doctors of chiropractic can provide exercise counseling, helping you choose exercises that are best for you. If a sore or swollen joint prevents you from exercising, talk to your doctor of chiropractic about other drug-free pain-relief options. In addition, your doctor of chiropractic, dietician or nutritionist can help you choose proper supplements that may play important roles in OA prevention and treatment.

ccording to ayurveda, when the bodys natural functions work smoothly, all is in good health: easy menstruation, regular elimination, restful sleep and strong digestion. Digestion has an important role in healing. Our digestion extracts the nutrients we get from food to allow the body to function as a whole. Food is our medicine. There are some simple Ayurvedic suggestions that can have a profound effect on a persons whole well-being. 1. Eat in a quiet setting. Concentrate on eating and digesting. You will be able to savor the flavors often missed when reading, watching TV or talking throughout a meal. 2. Take a few minutes to rest after you eat. This starts the digestive process in a gentle manner. A sense of calm could really benefit digestion and general health.

3. Always sit to eat. Slow down, no eating on the run or in your car. Sitting down relaxes the digestive tract, focuses on the awareness of what you are eating and the pleasure of eating. 4. Do not eat when upset. Eating when you are feeling emotionally upset, angry or sad, can trigger gastrointestinal discomfort. Wait until you have calmed yourself with some wonderful breath awareness. 5. Avoid overeating. In ayurveda, it is suggested to eat only about three-fourths of our actual capacity. Eating beyond this does not allow the stomach to function properly. 6. Avoid cold foods and iced drinks. Cold drinks and foods put out the digestive fire, inhibit our digestive enzymes and do not allow our taste buds to really taste. 7. Do not talk with your mouth full. There is something to be said about this as the chewing and swallowing is what allows the true flavor of our food to be enhanced. Talking distracts us from really tasting our food. And certain tastes on the tongue send a message to the brain for healing. 8. Do not eat too fast or too slow. Putting your fork or spoon down in between bits allows us to steady the pace. Chew each bite about 32 times (one for every tooth we have). This helps to predigest with the enzymes in our saliva prior to reaching the stomach. 9. Do not eat until your previous meal has been digested. This is anywhere from 3-6 hours. Your mouth should be watering with that wonderful digestive saliva prior to eating. If it is not, it may be emotional eating. Have a snack, like fruit or warm tea. 10. Favor fresh cooked foods at mealtime. These foods will contain life force and intelligence. Sorry, no Big Macs. A wonderful, fresh meal stimulates the appetite and gets the digestive enzymes working on all levels, even before you have eaten. With all of this talk about eating and how to eat, it is now time to prepare a wonderful meal for my family. I look forward to us sitting quietly and eating our nourishing food together. May you have a peaceful, nourishing meal as well!

If the area is known for amazing, age-worthy wines, this can drive up the cost of the land and the price of the wine you sell.
Do you own your own equipment or are you part of a co-op and you share or rent equipment to help keep production prices down? After the grapes are picked, are you hand sorting them to make sure only the best are used? Are you using stainless steel or oak to age your wine in? If you use oak, are you using new oak? Is it French or American? They vary in price. And dont forget to factor in shipping costs of the barrels. Maybe you are using neutral oak barrels. Or passing the wine through oak chips or adding oak oil to mimic the oak barrels. Those oak barrels you are using to age the wine take up a lot more square footage than a stainless steel tank. They also require a lot more man power than a single tank. How long are you bottle aging the wine before releasing? That also requires square footage. Dont forget about basic economics: supply and demand. How much demand is there for your wine and how much did you make? Then you have shipping costs, possible import/export taxes, advertising, etc. to factor in for the cost of that bottle of wine. So as you can see, it is not an easy answer; and I didnt even cover all the items that can drive up the cost. Now some of you may be wondering if the more expensive wine is worth it. That is a whole other article!

hat is a question I get occasionally. My response is a deep sigh followed by, That is based on a lot of different factors. It is not a simple answer. Many factors have to be considered. So lets start at the beginning of the process. You need land to grow grapes. Has this land been in your family for generations with grapes or did you just buy the land and plant the vines? Or did you just buy the grapes and rent space to process it into wine? Or is it a combination of estate grown fruit and purchased fruit? If the area is known for amazing, age-worthy wines, this can drive up the cost of the land and the price of the wine you sell. This brings us to the next step. Can you machine harvest the grapes or do you have to pick by hand because the slope of the hill is so steep you cannot use machines? What about the soil? Do you have to return the gravel soil every year because it gets washed out from the heavy fall rains; like in the Northern Cote du Rhone area of France? But before you pick the grapes, did you have a great year like every other farmer and now there is a glut of grapes on the market, which just drove the price down per ton? Or did you lose half the buds to a bad spring with hail or frost? Washington State wines usually cost more because winters can be too harsh on the vines. The vineyards need to replace some of their vines every few years.

When you breathe, you inspire. When you do not breathe, you expire.Author Unknown
t seems that no matter where you are today, there is so much talk about the benefits of yoga. People of all ages and walks of life are participating in the practice, and doctors are frequently recommending it to their patients as a way to manage their health care in a more holistic and empowering way. To help you step into the world of yoga confidently, you may want to become familiar with some basic information. Connect with your breath is one of the first instructions a student new to yoga will hear. Breath is what energizes and guides us. It is what defines us as being alive. Yogas Ujjai breath is known as victorious breath. It is a deep, audible breath, considered to be both energizing and calming. The breath is so powerful, in fact, that a complete yoga practice could be to simply be still and breathe! Yoga is an Eightfold Path that aligns us with Consciousness, allowing us to connect with the Oneness. It is a true mind/body/ spirit practice. Asana (the poses) is the third step on the path. If youre looking to begin practicing yoga asana, there is a practice that is just right for you, regardless of current level of physical fitness. Everybody can benefit from practicing yoga! For the very inactive, elderly or sedentary, chair yoga may
be appropriate. Sitting in a chair, one can move through many motions to increase mobility within the physical body. Breath and circulation improve, which also helps to move energy throughout the individual. An increase in range of motion is possible, allowing for more ease in everyday movements needed to care for oneself. Restorative yoga is another form of yoga, in which blankets, pillows, eye masks and other supportive props may be used. This form of yoga is particularly effective for supporting the healing of those who are in recovery from surgery, mental/emotional challenges and addictions, and is also helpful in healing ones spirit. It is considered a more passive practice, where the goal is to turn inward and simply breathe. In a secure, relaxed position, healing energy is accessed from within. There are many more forms of yoga asana, and many variations on them, depending on the teacher, focus and philosophy. Hatha yoga, Kundalini, Astanga, Anusara, Iyengar, Bikram and Power Vinyasa are just a few you may have heard of. Some teachers have trained in more than one method, and will offer a combination of forms in their instruction. The types mentioned run the gamut from slower-moving to more active forms of movement. More active practices help us to burn up and release that which is no longer needed. Increased strength and flexibility are achieved through movement. The final word, Namaste, uttered at the end of a yoga class, is to honor those present. It translates to, The Divine light in me honors the Divine light in you. Honoring our highest selves allows us to function in the realm where all is possible, where there is no misunderstanding and peacefulness exists. It is a reminder of who we truly are: a unique expression of the One, the Breath, the Universal Life Force, the Light, Consciousness. Whatever you choose to name it, it all comes back to the Breath.

f the mind is indeed like a garden, as James Allen suggests, we can reflect on the types of seeds that are planted and growing in our garden and make adjustments as we see fit. A garden is objective.
Trish Poole
You can look at the garden and clearly identify what is a weed and what is a useful or beautiful plant. Many, if not most seeds in the garden of our mind are planted purposefully; such as the positive things we are taught as children, the good habits and attitudes, thoughts about what is required for success. Some seeds are a result of negative input from someone outside ourselves or a negative experience; any experience we interpret in a fearful or negative way. The accidental, negative thoughts and experiences that are like weeds in our garden can be removed or pushed out. It can take effort, much like the effort it takes in reclaiming an old flower garden that has been invaded by weeds due to neglect. Some of the weeds in a garden can easily be removed by pulling them out with the roots. Other weeds, like dandelions, are more difficult; one must trace the dandelion to the tap root and eliminate all the runners and check back in the next days and weeks to come that the dandelions are eliminated for good. The useful plants and flowers will likely need fertilizer and perhaps other attention such as dividing them up or giving the roots more room to spread out. Once the garden is cleaned up and the flowers and useful plants tended to, you can enjoy the beauty and all the good that the garden gives. When you start out with a garden you usually make a map of where each plant will go, so staying with that metaphor, draw a
large square on a sheet of paper as the map for the garden of your mind. In the square, make a list of the positive thoughts, attitudes and habits you would like to grow in the garden of your mind, and list any of the bad habits, negative thoughts and attitudes that you would like to eliminate outside the square. Just like if you pull weeds you put them outside the garden; so you put those old bad habits outside the garden of your mind where they can wither away. Every day, look at the garden of your mind and water your positive thoughts, attitudes and habits, and remind yourself that the weeds are drying up and withering away. If you have a garden in your yard, whether a flower garden or vegetable garden, any time you water it, weed it or tend it in any way, remind yourself of how you are tending and caring for the positive in your mind, how your mind is fertile soil for all that is good and that your tending to the positive in your mind is going to yield positive experiences in your daily life. Tend your garden of your mind all spring and summer long, just like you do a flower or vegetable garden and you will find your thoughts, habits and attitudes changing beautifully as you reap the positive things and experiences it brings forth.

et me attempt to explain soul release with an example. Its a Wednesday night and I am ready for bed. Same routine as most, Im sure; with the addition of a meditation session before slumber. All is seemingly well. I remove my headphones, place my hand-held CD player that holds my weekly lesson on the floor next to my bed, turn off my lamp, pull the covers up over my shoulder and lay my head on my pillow. I briefly listen to my husband and my puppy breathing in deep sleep. Its time for me to join them! Suddenly my heart starts to beat rapidly. I start to perspire. I am thinking, anxiety? Panic attack? Why? This doesnt make sense. My husband starts tossing and turning. It then occurs to me, this is not mine. This belongs to a lost soul. An earthbound spirit if you will, desiring a soul release. I give instructions on how they get to their destination. I reassure them that all is forgiven and that only love awaits them. I say a prayer requesting guidance and safe delivery of this lost child of God, and roll over to continue what I had started. Thursday night, same routine, followed by meditation and sleep so I thought! I let out a deep sigh of slight annoyance. I roll on my back, open my eyes and request we talk during the day, as I am very tired. See, the lost soul had not been satisfied with my crossing over procedure due to the fact they had more to say. Earthbound spirits, being they have not crossed over, still harbor their ego selves and are not very concerned if I would prefer to sleep than help them at that place and time. The spirit explains they have been trying desperately to get someone to listen to them. I then explain that I am no help to anyone without rest. I choose to turn over and sleep; disregarding the protests. At approximately 2:30 a.m. I am awakened by a very vivid dream. The three last things I remember are: a van, holding three or four people, rolling over several times; many dogs barking; and a date, or what I believe is a date 3.13.2008. There was a voice saying, I have tried to get someone to listen for four years now. I repeated the date 03.13.08. Okay, I can remember that.
Spirit:NO, WRITE IT DOWN! Me: I dont have anything to write on. Spirit: YOU NEED TO WRITE IT DOWN! So I get up gently, not to wake anyone, go downstairs and write it down. I attempt to figure out the clues, which turn out to be all they needed to share in order to let go and crossover. I am glad to report my room and mind have since been silent. The soul has been released to the light and is now at peace. This example illustrates one form of soul release. If you are interested in this topic and would like more information, feel free to contact me.

s the owner of a pole exercise studio, I am constantly meeting women who think they have something wrong with them. When women are thinking about starting pole the most frequent question asked is, Can I still do pole even though Im fat, old, out of shape, weak, etc.? My answer is always yes, because the focus of pole fitness is self empowerment. Pole is about finding your own inner strength and enjoying it! So I explain this and the women are curious enough that they sign up for a class. But then they get our introduction e-mail stating that they need to wear shorts and I get another panicked phone call. Shorts are required for pole because skin sticks to the pole. Even the most basic pole

spin, the fireman, requires that you use your knees for a grip area so you must show your legs. As your pole tricks become more advanced, the more skin will need to show. For example, to sit on the pole you need the skin of your inner thighs to help grip the pole. So as your tricks become more advanced, your shorts get shorter; advanced pole work is conducted in a sports bra and short shorts. Ladies entering Level 1 show up in yoga pants. They attempt to roll up the pants for the required moves and dance in pants the rest of class. Quickly they realize this is uncomfortable as a rolled up pant is often too tight at the thigh when bunched or cant be rolled up high enough. So for week two they walk in wearing what looks like their husbands gym shorts. The week two shorts are almost all the way down to the knee, so they can push them up just that little bit. My question is, WHY? Why are women so terrified of their legs? If shes got legs and she knows how to use them is any indication, we should be celebrating our legs, not hiding them! But that is my thought now, when I started pole in 2007 in Australia, I was one of the students terrified to show my knees. I had three knee surgeries and have the scars to show for it. I have cellulite. And in my pre-pole life I never wore a skirt that was above the knees
and youd never catch me dead in shorts. But then the empowered sport of pole came into my life. I went through the yoga pants, to gym shorts, to pole booty shorts transformation. After a few weeks I was comfortable wearing my shorts in the pole studio. The other women and I all had bonded and as I looked around all of us had imperfections and no one was laughing.
