By: Kwenie T. Andrada 2012

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Situation Analysis Mathematics education enhances the mind of every individual and makes it easier to acquire new knowledge later in life. It provides opportunity rather than knowledge s that students develop their skills in problem solving, critical thinking, analysis and cognition. An adequate knowledge in mathematics and adeptness in its skills enable a person to cope with situations involving math applications.

Theoretical Framework Education must help to build higher order cognitive abilities, strengthen processes of inquiry, enable collaborative problem solving, and prepare people to compete in global markets and become productive members of democracies. No single solution exists to address these immense challenges.

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Instructional materials and sources Valera (2007) cited that the significance of providing varied instructional materials for more active study attitude and dramatic participation on the part of the learner is found to be effective in all types of teaching. Instructional materials reinforce and add

effectiveness to other teaching procedure. The teacher himself is more effective when he has many good strings to his bow. When a variety of experiences are offered, each one gains freshness and impact and the multiple approach adds up to a whole that is actually greater than the sun of its part. Instructional materials can be the vehicle to attain veracity. It provides real experiences that are crucial in learning. These instructional material are priceless, on the associative level of instruction, not only to give meaning to words and symbols but also to explain thoughts concerning higher conclusion. The goal of using instructional materials in teaching with a prepared module is to build bridges from abstract knowledge to thoroughly understood facts and ideas that the teacher would want to transcend to his students. Familiarity with the concepts and ideas, supplemented with a concrete material that includes students activity,

increases the students understanding in this makes their learning meaningful and functional. This is due to the students attention and interest that are focus on the material given, (Dicang 2011). The use of instructional materials can ensure the students understanding of the concept since they are guided with the self-study materials including problems that they should understand and work on. Working accurately on these problems would improve the students performance of any subject. Manzano (2001) also stressed that the use of relevant materials is consistent with the objects of the Philippine for globalization. Teachers in the Philippines need to be innovative to keep in cadence with the times, to keep pace with the challenges in curriculum development and methodology, and the international, national, and local demands of the teaching profession. The only way to meet the challenges and pressures confronting the existing educational system is t keep oneself posted about educational trends. It appears that an alternative if one desires to grow in the teaching profession is to try out new things, carefully evaluating the advantages for a more rational approach to the educational tasks. The instructional materials should be designed and prepared so that the interest and effectiveness will be multiplies and the clientele would be motivated to learn. Thus, the selection of the instructional materials depend on the literacy level of the learners, the most suitable and effective content of the particular materials to be

produced; the learners interest and needs are also relevant. Utilizing the most effective and most suitable instructional materials to promote active and more participative learning is likewise important. As most educators say, one way to have teaching-learning is to use materials not only as instructional but motivational materials as well (Puyao, 2001)
