ENTREPRENEURSHIP REFLECTION ESSAY IN HEALTH CARE Entrepreneurship Reflection Essay in Health Care Health care is dynamic and ever-changing environment for entrepreneurs to thrive. The current cost of health care continues to rise at a rate faster than the economic growth of the

nation. For a health care organization, large or small, entrepreneurship development and success depends on the openness of the organization to accept the idea from the beginning to end. In health care increasing productivity and decreasing the cost to the consumer can increase job growth or hinder it. The health care organization has to be open to communication without any barriers that prevent the flow of creative ideas. The effects of entrepreneurship can be positive or negative; the challenge is how the organization deals with the failure, or success. An entrepreneurship that is current in the health care market is electronic medical records (EMR). Discussion will follow on how EMR is changing the health care delivery service, good and bad. Health care entrepreneurs in a large health care organization thrive in an environment that is open to communication. Larger organizations have the manpower, and resources available to mentor the entrepreneur throughout the process. From the beginning to the end, the entrepreneur has available resources to build a successful product. Large corporations have pitfalls too. The pitfall can come by smothering creativity, or embracing a culture that does not cultivate innovation. The positive can be allowing the company to grow, cultivate creativity, and reward small advances towards the product. When looking at EMR, a larger health care organization is able to pursue new opportunities in the innovation of EMR. The advancement can include the interfacing of EMR with other health care organizations, cutting down on the time to transfer information regarding the treatment of the consumer, and prevention of repeating similar examinations or tests. The negative is that many of the EMR do not interface with other forms of EMR, thus causing delay or repeat of examination.

Many entrepreneurs working for a small health care organization start from the bottom up on an innovation. The creativity of the individual and ability to communicate effectively will influence the success of the innovation. The individual will do whatever it takes to make the product succeed. The organization may not have the flexibility of seasoned employees to draw advice, may have to increase working hours, and perform all the functions necessary to make the end-product. The advantage of a smaller heath care organization is being able to see the innovation throughout the entire process, from start to finish. The disadvantage is the possibility of not having the financial resources available to cultivate the innovation, thus stopping the process. Smaller health care organizations are beginning to struggle with the EMR conversion. The financial strain is causing many smaller health care organizations to try and combine resources with other health care services. Although many are able to send EMR information, it is very limited and restrictive. The positive side is the ability to share EMR information throughout the local health care organization, but not with others that the consumer may visit. The electronic medical record (EMR) is the word-processor of the consumers medical record (Sujansky, 1998). EMR offers the health care profession or organization the ability to effectively improve the quality of care, and the documentation of the delivery of health care services. EMR can improve the efficiency, quality, and communication between the health care professional and others. The disadvantage is that there are many different types of EMR and not all interfaces with each other. Health care has been slow to convert to the computerized version of EMR. The entrepreneurship development of the EMR has to focus on design to communicate with other systems, thus increasing the delivery of health care information for the consumer. EMR has a positive effect on the health care delivery system by improving communication between health care professionals. EMR can cut down the confusion of written communication

The EMR can give health care professionals a reminder to order examinations in the future and keep track of examinations in the past. Another disadvantage is the time the health care professional has to learn how to use the system. Health care is changing the way health care organizations retrieve, send, and communicate the consumers health records with each other. EMR is an innovation that an entrepreneur envisioned years ago and is now coming to life throughout the health care world. EMR has the ability to impact the health care delivery system in a positive and negative way. The possibilities are endless in changing the delivery of health care. Larger organizations are looking at ways to integrate throughout the health care organizations, while smaller health care organizations look to communicate effectively within the same organization.
