Georgios was born to a well known Christian parents of Anici

Family in the mid Second century in Lod, Syria-Palestina. (Gorgios is a
Greek name) His father was Gerontius and mother was Polychronia.
Georgios meant Farmer. It is not known why they called him Georgios,
probably they might have been agriculturists. Nothing in detail is recorded
in the history. Georgios real life and the meaning of his name had
absolutely no connection. People often change their names based on
myth, numerology, luck and so forth.
By the time Georgios reached adolescence, his father died and some
time later his mother also died. Nothing much about his family is recorded
Georgios father Gerontius was a Roman Army official and was well
acquainted with the Emperor. So Georgios decided to see The Emperor
Diocletian for a job.
Emperor Diocletian was very happy to see Georgios, knowing his
intention he was taken in to the army. Georgios was handsome, smart,
daring, chivalrous, gallant and very impressive. Soon Georgios was
promoted to the rank of TRIBUNUS and was inducted in to the imperial
guards at NICOMEDIA. In most of the pictures he is depicted as wearing a
steel-armor holding a long spear riding on a horseback. This outfit was
widely used by knights in the later years.
Diocletian was a remarkable and unique type Emperor. He was born
to a slave parents. He joined the army and rose to power by his might,
cruelty, shrewdness and crooked intelligence. His full name was Gaius
Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus (AD 245 313)
Diocletian was influenced by Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus
Caesar Iovius Emperor (AD 305 311) and began to persecute Christians.
Though Diocletian liked Georgios very much, the Emperor could not
tolerate his religion. Though Georgios regarded the Emperor very much he
could not bear the Emperors Christian persecution. The gap between the
Emperor and Georgios widened. The Emperor tried to persuade Georgios
to worship Pagan Gods but he stuck to his parental religion and opposed
any persecution of Christians. Georgios was a firm Jesus believer and
nothing could influence or persuade a deviation from his faith.
Finally the Emperor was forced to take a very drastic action against
Georgios for the disobedience of his imperial orders. Georgios was
removed from all the military ranks and was imprisoned. Georgios was
persecuted several times; even then the Emperor could not change his
mind. At last after severe persecution Georgios was beheaded in the

3
prison itself. Diocletian Emperor feared a public execution could be
disastrous to him. The public might turn against the Emperor, because
Georgios was loved by all and was very popular.
It is believed that Georgios was executed on AD: April 23, 303.
Georgios body was given to his people and they buried him without
any military honor. Though the Emperor was very much upset and
regretted over the execution of his best friends son he had no choice but
to execute him to keep His prestige. Emperor is Emperor and the subject
must obey his orders no matter what other human relationship they had.
Georgios died as a Christian martyr stuck to his faith.
Georgios would have been spared from execution provided he
denounced Christ and worshipped pagan Gods, but that never happened.
Georgios Life and faith has influenced millions of people from the
time of his death and continue to do so. Nothing in this world could
change Georgios faith and belief not even all the gifts and honors offered
by The Roman Emperor. Georgios wealth was his faith in Jesus and his life
as a soldier was for his living. Like Joan of Arc, Georgios never killed a
human being when he fulfilled his life and duty as a soldier. There was no
bloodstain on his hands.
When Georgios was sure, that he will be executed, he gave all his
personal belongings to the poor. There are not many people who faced
death like Georgios for faith and principle, in the history of mankind.
Georgios was translated as George in English. This Christian Martyr was
proclaimed as Saint George, in later years. Millions of people were killed in
the name of religion from the time of Christ. They all are not recorded,
only disappeared in the vague numbers. Few are recorded without many
details. Georgios true story is one of the few true-stories got surfaced and
became popular. Somebody took the initiative to publicize about Georgios,
and spread widely around the globe.
In fact The Orthodox Church of England patronized Georgios, by
fourth century he was known as a great martyr; thereafter many
countries in the world also accepted him.
23rd April was named as Saint George's day in AD 1222
Georgios is considered as the patron Saint of sick, poor and needy
people and also for protection from all evilness and poisons.
He is a patron saint of England. Richard the Lion Heart of England
used Saint George emblem to the British flag, in 12th Century during the
Crusade. You can see the cross widely used by the Knights of the same
medieval chivalric century.
Pope Gelasius declared Gorgios as Saint in AD 494. From time to
time several people proclaimed Georgios as Saint.

4
Orthodox Churches in allover the world named many Churches and
institutions in the name of their Orthodox patron saint Georgios.
Later Catholics also began to establish many institutions without
Vaticans permission, since that was not required. At a very late stage
they realized that they were promoting a saint who was not approved by
Vatican. In fact they had no saints from the non-clergy category. By 20th
century Catholics conveniently accepted Saint George, if not they had to
rename many institutions that was already been in use. Now Gorgios is a
Saint for all Christians who believe in saints. There are many Christians
who do not accept anybodys sainthood. At least for them, he can remain
as a martyr.
Nobody knows who portrayed Georgios as an armored soldier
sitting on a horseback. No real pictures were ever been made or available.
Georgios armor reminds me of the armor of God as written below.
This
picture
is
the
symbolic
representation of a New-Testament
Christian. As you read the following
you will understand. What he wears
is the "Armor of the Lord" because
your fight is not with flesh and blood.

Ephesians 6:12. We wrestle not

against the flesh and blood, but
against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this world, against
spiritual powers of evil in the
heavenly world.
(Fight is against the evil powers only.
So you must prepare yourself with
the following armor)
Ephesians 6: 14-17. Fasten the belt
of truth around your waist, and put
on the breastplate of righteousness.
As shoes for your feet put on
whatever will make you ready to
proclaim the gospel of peace. With
all of these take the shield of faith,
which you will be able to quench all
the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Take the helmet of salvation, and the
sword of the Holy Spirit, which is
The Word of God.

5
Being a born Christian Georgios must have been good with the
word of God, which gave him courage to face his end with his faith.
Sculptors and painters has made and drawn all-important figures
according to their imaginations. Leonardo Davinci has drawn Jesus, His
disciples and many others whom he has never seen but from his wild
imaginations. Davinci drew the first century people in 15th century.
Likewise Georgios pictures, statues, medals, and shields came into
existence finally, after too many revisions, many beautiful final products
came in to use. They are just the shadow of the origin, reminding you the
actual existence of Georgios. Religious and other establishments and
institutions have made, and are making a good business out of it.

Everything written above is true to fact.

==============
What is the myth behind Georgios

One of the most popular pictures of Georgios is seen in his steel

outfits, sitting on a horse back with a long spear and killing the firespitting dragon. Dragon itself is a mythological creature. The existence of
such a wild creature in the third century does not match with the story of
the time. No one knows how this legend came in to existence.
Georgios was an ordinary man and no super-human or any
incarnation. If you describe Georgios as a lone ranger or a traveling
knight, that does not fit very much to his duty as a soldier especially as
an Emperors guard, because he was stationed in one place. He was also a
soldiers hero, an asset to the Emperors guards and was very famous.
Being so brave, the request for saving a beautiful Princess, of the
Libyan Kingdom, from the dragon monster must have reached Georgios.
The Libyan King offered the princess herself, as the first gift and
everything Georgios asked. He killed the dragon and saved the princess.
His fight with the dragon was not that easy. During his first attack itself
the spear broke and he fell down from the horse. The dragon was huge
and its immovability over a small prey was advantageous to Georgios. He
wrestled a lot like a rat with the mouse. He fell underneath the dragon
with the sword in his waist.
He managed to pull the sword out of the sheath and thrust it
through a weak spot of the dragon right in to Dragons heart.
For killing the dragon Georgios wanted nothing form the Libyan
King including the princess but he asked them to believe in Christ. Nobody
knows whether the Libyan king has become a Christian or not.
When the question of any princess comes, historians will describe
them as beautiful; like spices in the food. If it is a prince he will be
described as handsome, tall, charming, romantic and brave Etc. Etc.

6
The Christian Churches came up with some inner meaning of the
Dragon killing symbolism, probably to save themselves from their unrealistic legendary story and popularization of the picture. The Church
says, the dragon killing is mere symbolism of the victory over evil.
The dragon stands for the evilness and the princess stands for
Gods Holy truth. Though dragon has legs to move around, it is very
similar to a reptile or serpent. Though pagans worship serpent; believers
consider serpent, as mans born-enemy as it is described in the book of
Genesis in the Old Testament.
In Eastern countries Dragons are portrayed as a beautiful, friendly,
and wise angel. They are the angels of the Orient. The people in Asian
countries love them and also worship them. Temples and shrines have
been built to worship them. They are called pagodas. It is believed that
the dragon controls the nature.
I do not think, it is a bad idea to use symbolism to project and to
communicate a message. It is a misfit for any religious ideology.
Very often you have heard short stories used as an example when
big speeches are delivered. What will happen if the short stories swallow
the main theme? The so-called small story will become prominent and the
main theme will disappear as unimportant.
This is what happens in religious matter when symbolism is used,
the inner meaning or the message portrayed will never stay prominent but
the mythology; and it will lead the listener to pagan worshipping, rather
than true worshipping.
The Georgios picture poses as the deliverer from the dragon.
1) The first option is - this picture influence mans mind to worship
Georgios for his help. But the Bible says, You shall worship tyour God
only and not anybody else. This is the first and foremost of all
commandments.
2) The second option is to worship the Dragon itself and pray to it,
not to harm the one who prays to him. This is what pagans do; they
worship the serpents and dragons.
3) The third option is worship both of them.
If you wish sincerely to pray, pray to God himself, who is the
creator of everything, according to His first Commandment or do not pray
at all.
Pictures and statues are made to communicate some idea but that
does not work, it misleads the one who looks on to another direction that
has nothing to do with the original idea.
Personally I am not interested to degrade or elevate anyone; I
believe that I should not do it. That is not my style.

7
For religious people exaggeration and superstitious flavoring is part
of their performances to impress and attract people to them.
Mere truth is unattractive and boring; it is just a dry subject. Only
very few people would go for it. The day you feel this worldly life is just
vain and everything you have seen and accumulated is just waste and
never lasting; you will look beyond the clouds. You have to leave
everything behind when you die. That is what the Macedonian invader,
Alexander had to do. He left his hands outside his coffin; declaring that he
did not take anything with him when he died even when he conquered one
third of the world. He could not complete his mission and never sat on the
throne as an Emperor, not even for a day over the countries he ran over.
