Simple, elegant, unique...the hallmarks of a CMI design. In the last year, CMI has introduced three new ascenders, two new descent and rapid escape devices, fourteen new or updated pulleys and trolleys, a cutting-edge new take on wearresistant runners and a brilliantly simple new trolley lanyard. Heres a sampling of our latest work: Our new RP143 Knot-Passing Pulley (A) is the latest generation in CMIs tradition of making pulleys stronger, lighter, and better. With an incredible 15,000-pound minimum breaking strength (MBS), this 2-pound package has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any pulley in its class, and at a slender 8 by 4 it packs a lot of utility into a very small space. The unique design of the pulley sideplates enables the knot passing pulley to function as an edgeroller in a pinch, and the lockoff pin (included) keeps the wheel from turning for shear reduction applications. Numerous tie-in points offer added exibility, and the oversized aluminum sheave easily passes a knotted 1/2-inch rope. The sealed ball bearing guarantees a lifetime of smooth rope pulls. UIAA Pulleys (B). CMI has introduced modied versions of ten of our most popular pulleys, with designs tweaked to meet the stringent UIAA 127 Standard on Mountaineering and Climbing Pulleys, which are widely regarded as the most comprehensive standards in the industry.

CMIs Quick eXcape Device, or QXD (D), recognizes the natural tendancy to squeeze the descent device to slow down, and integrates this reex into a compact device designed for rapid escape. The QXDs cousin, the Guillotine (E), is another customer-inspired product. Two adjustment screws (not visible in photo; allen wrench included for adjustment) allow the friction to be customized for each individual user. Pulling down on the red body reduces friction and speeds the descent. Both are designed for use with 7.5mm Escape Tech rope (sold separately), and must be stored pre-rigged for rapid deployment. A foolproof escape when conditions become untenablewhether in the heat of a structure re or the heat of battle, the QXD and Guillotine are pocket-sized lifesavers. Our low-prole Edge E Roller (F) is nothing short F of revolutionary. No longer limited to easing rope around 90-degree edges, the 22-inch chain of ve articulated sections wraps cleanly over boulders and cliff edges, rooftops, even steel beams or any other obstacle you can nd. It is the rst to use sealed ball bearings for an incredibly smooth and low friction rope pulls, and its low prole allows litters to be easily raised over the edge. Constructed of highstrength aluminum alloy sideplates, aluminum sheaves, sealed ball bearings and stainless steel bolt axles. The edge roller measures in at 22 x 5 x 2 and folds into a compact 7 cube for storage, and at a featherweight 4lb 2oz it barely tips the scale. For added exibility, additional double roller units may be added to increase the length by 10. Our Trolley Lanyard (G) makes building zipline rigging a cinch, by offering total redundancy between the cable and the harness. Two contrasting 1-inch nylon runners that are sewn together, providing both a main lanyard and backup lanyard in one compact unit (trolley and carabiners not included). The same 1-inch polyurethane-coated nylon webbing that makes our Cavemaster harness so tough makes a new Anchor Rabbit Strap (H) nearly indestructible! This 22-inch long runner features durable steel D-rings at both ends, and an 8,000-pound MBS.

A new harness concept, redesigned from the ground up. Or is that from the underground up? The Cavemaster (C) seat harness is built from a new coated webbing, which provides the best wear and C abrasion resistance of any cave harness on the market today. The harness closes with a Maillon-Rapide half-moon screw link (not included, see website for details), and its low position works well with Frog climbing systems. Cinch buckles on the outsides of the legs and back ensure there are no pinch points. The three webbing gear loops wont catch on rocks while crawling like metal D-rings will. The Cavemaster is simple, effective and will outlast any other cave harness on the market! One size ts waists to 42-inches. Weight: 1lb 7oz. Meets ASTM specs (3,600 pound MBS).

8-Rings and Racks

More than anything else we have ever made, we are best known for our almost legendary Figure 8 Rings. CMI burst onto the descender scene in 1974 with the introduction of the rst forged aluminum hardcoated 8ring. Now, nearly a million eights later, our lightweight, versatile designs, backed by their awless track record, continue to win new followers. Our eights are hot forged out of aircraft-grade 6061T6 aluminum alloy. Why aluminum, when many others use steel? Aluminum keeps our eights light A and produces excellent friction, while maintaining the safety margins demanded by todays tough standards. Our exclusive hardcoat guarantees an exceptionally long life and produces smooth, even friction. The Standard 8-Ring (A) is quite possibly the simplest rappel device ever created. Now available in a rainbow of colors and an uncoated version. Versatile and easy to use, excellent for the casual climber or rappeller. Program users love the extended useful life. B Our Rescue 8-Ring (B) is built big enough to handle the largest rescue ropestwo of them. Extended horns on the upper ring make tying off a snap by preventing the rope from sliding up and locking off. Dual holes on the tie-in end allow the 8-Ring to remain attached to the harness while threading the rope, preventing loss of the device in extreme conditions. Our largest racks, the Sport Racks (C) and Rescue Racks (D,E) , are framed with 3/8-inch stainless steel and feature open stainless steel bars. The open bar design not only dissipates heat more quickly on long rappels, it also makes improper rigging almost impossible to miss. The bars have a full one-inch diameter to overcome the decreased friction inherent in stainless steel. These racks are available with or without bars, and the Sport Rack is available with the eye at or rotated 90 from the rack. Our MiniRack (F), HyperRack (G) and HyperRack NPFA (H) and HyperRack Extreme (I) make great alternatives for shorter drops or lighter loads, and are adored by cavers and rescuers concerned about weight. Crafted from 5/16-inch stainless, prerigged with solid aluminum bars. When sliding down a rope, the natural instinct is to squeeze the rope to slow or stop the descent. We took this natural instinct and built it into the Quick eXcape Device (K) . Unlike other devices, the QXD is designed to be used with a gloved hand and the natural instinct of squeezing the rope stops or slows the descent. This pays off in additional safety under trying conditions. Guillotine (J) follows the same concept, but allows each user to adjust the devices friction to suit their needs. The HyperBar, an option on all of our racks, makes tying off the rack safer and easier than ever. Dual Hyper Bars on the HyperRack Extreme make it impossible for the tie-off to come undone, giving you added condence during critical operations.

Designed with the most serious of users and the extremes of inhospitability in mind, CMI Ascenders are chosen by envelope-pushing explorers and demanding professionals alike. Our ascender bodies are extruded from aircraft-grade aluminum and stainless steel, and nished with a hard powder coat to permanently protect them from the elements. The cams are cast from chrome-moly steel and nished with a non-metallic nish that gives them the same corrosion resistance as stainless steel. Our springs are tested to over a million cycles, simulating lifetimes of the most demanding use. All of our ascenders easily accomodate 5/8-inch rope. We guarantee our cams, springs and safeties for life. If you can break or wear one out, well replace it for free! Large Ultrascender (A) An ergonomic safety mechanism and thumb notch on the cam make this an easy ascender to operate. Available in black and in red. Small Ultrascender (B). A shorter version of the Large Ultrascender, excellent as a mechanical safety in lifting rigs. Ropewalker Ascender (C). Offers the rst updates to the classic Gibbs design in years. Our enhancements include adjustable spring tension, a reversible cable and pin and mud vents to help prevent caked dirt from degrading ascender performance. Available with red anodized aluminum or stainless steel bodies, and in an Arborist Version (D) which has a bolt for xed application on arborists lanyards.

Ascenders

Foot Ascender (E) afxes to the instep of each foot with its specially designed harness (included, not pictured) to build a simple, efcient climbing system ideal for cavers and arborists. Expedition Ascender (F) A beefy ascender that features the most comfortable handgrip weve ever built, this versatile ascender is designed with the cold and inhospitable in mind. The large opening and beefy handgrip easily accomodate a gloved hand and provide a substantial handhold. The Double-Handled Expedition Ascender (G) lets you get both hands in on the climbing action. Ascender Slings (H). Designed around the Texas or inchworm ascending system. Sligns run from the upper ascender to the chest and seat harness, and from the lower ascender to both feet. Multiple tie-in points for easy adjustment.

The rst free ascent of the Salathe Wall in Yosemite Valley by Todd Skinner and Paul Piana would have ended in tragedy had it not been for a CMI ascender. Paul topped out the climb and clipped into a car sized boulder. Fortunately, he also clipped into an old pin just because it was there. Todd was following on CMI ascenders and had just reached the edge when a noise from above alerted him that the boulder was moving. For what seemed like an eternity, Todd hovered just below the edge while the rock slid toward him. Six ropes were hanging over the edge, and all but the one Todd was suspended by were severed. While all their gear fell to the ground, Todd was saved because the CMI ascender took the punishment dealt out by the grinding rock. To quote Paul, Im glad it was a CMI ascender, as the weaker cast ascenders wouldnt have withstood the crushing of the big rock...and we would have been sorry for it!

or bearing is needed. Weaker and softer than the other sheaves. Nylon: Lightweight, self-lubricating, stronger than GFC.

Bushings and Bearings

Sideplates and Beckets

Sideplates form the body of the pulley, and together with the axle are primarily responsible for its strength. Beckets are installed in multi sheave pulleys to provide a lower tie - in point. Most pulleys have sideplates that rot ate independently around the axle to make rigging easier. This allows the pulley to be rigged onto a rope midstrand, rather than only at the ends. Sideplates come in all shapes, sizes and colors depending on pulley function, but there are essentially only two choices of material: Anodized Aluminum or Stainless Steel. Anodized Aluminum (AA) is lightweight and durable, but not as strong. Stainless Steel (SS) is very strong and resistant to the elements, but heavy.

The Bushing or Bearing is the load bearing member between the sheave and axle. A Bushing spreads the load over a larger area of axle, sliding the load around the pulley. This results in greater transfer and very little wear and extremely long life. However, the greater area in contact results in increased friction, decreasing efciency. Bearings decrease the amount of surface area in contact with the axle, which creates a more efcient transfer. By rolling the load around the axle, load on the transfer point is increased, which results in faster wear, shortening the life of the pulley. In contact with all the other parts of the pulley, the axle is a primary determinant of the overall strength. Our special corrosion-resistant nuts round out the package, ensuring a lifetime of resistance to the elements. Steel: High strength, but heavy. Aluminum: Lighter, but not as strong. Hardened and Ground (HG): Longest lifetime of any axle. Zinc-Plated Steel (ZPS): A less expensive option.

Axles

Sheaves

While most folks know us for our legendary 8-rings and ascenders, its no secret that our real claim to fame is our tremendous collection of pulleys. We began quite modestly in 1982 by tweaking the best designs of the day and producing a line of four pulleys, each improving on the features of the last. Those rst four pulleys became so popular on rope that we modied the designs for cable. CMI found new and exciting ways to cut weight and increase efciency while packing more strength into smaller packages. Our Micro pulleys were the rst of their kind in mass production anywhere. Our Heavy Duty pulleys continue to be regarded as some of the strongest and most reliable pulleys available. Weve joined forces with rescuers, arborists and industrial users to produce thoughtful, innovative designs that solve problems unique to each eld. Today, our line has grown to include over 70 pulleys, each designed with a specic use in mind. Whether you need a pulley for casual top-roping or long hauls, everyday conned space entry or lm at 11 rescues, or any of the variety of applications created by the blossoming arborist and ropes course industries, CMI has a pulley designed with your exact needs and requirements in mind.

The sheave (the wheel of the pulley) affects pulley performance in two ways: rope capacity and efciency. Sheave width is the major factor in how large a rope a pulley can handlewider sheaves handle larger ropes. Sheave diameter, along with bearing efficiency, determines the overall efciency of the piece. Generally speaking, larger sheave diameters produce greater pulley efciencies. Steel (SS): Strong, but heavy. Excellent for use with steel cable. Aluminum (AA): Lightweight, but soft. Glass Filled Celcon (GFC): self-lubricating, no bushing

So Many Pulleys!

With over 70 pulleys in our line it is impossible to squeeze them all into standard catalog pages, so weve added on to the catalog! The next pages open out to a centerfold that shows all of our pulleys, sideby-side, to scale and grouped by function. Weve posted detailed specications underneath each model to make selection easier than ever. Enjoy!

Trolleys and Ropes Course Hardware

CMI Trolleys are designed with safety and high strength in mind. All of our trolleys feature a redundant rear tie-in hole that allows you to attach a second large steel carabiner through both sideplates and around the cable, a feature not available anywhere else. The Professional Canopy Trolley (A) features longer sideplates to keep the rider away from the cable. Handles are only to be held onto to keep the rider facing forward, and are not meant to be load bearing. Three tie-in holes provide capability for multiple riders. The Canopy Trolley (B) features a tie-in above the main trolley for applications where a second cable is placed above the main cable for redundancy, with the trolleys connected by a short tether. (The CMI Velocity Trolley [below], is a perfect choice for the backup trolley.) Our Heavy Duty Rescue Trolley (C) was designed from the ground up to satisfy the heavy demands of rescuers and arborists. Thick aluminum sideplates and stainless steel axles deliver a stunning 22,600 pound MBS. Aluminum sheaves contribute to the lightweight package. The Heavy Duty Rescue Trolley mates easily with our Maxi Rigplate (page 9) to offer eight rigging points for maximum exibility. (For rope only, not for use with steel cable. When mated to the Maxi Rigplate, the systems MBS is 14,000 pounds.) Trolley Brake Block (D). Mounts around cable and attaches to a static point with a bungee cord (not included). Crafted from dense Appalachian Hardwood and sealed with an environmentally-safe preservative, and a striking surface of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, with steel hardware and a galvanized eye bolt. Classic Cable Trolley (E). Hardened sheaves turn on sealed ball bearings for a smooth ride. Oversized stainless steel sideplates extend well beyond the sheaves to protect them from hard use. Velocity Micro Trolley (F). Two 1 stainless steel sheaves can accomodate 3/8 or 1/2 cable. The stainless sideplates and axles offer an unparalleled 14,000-pound MBS, and ball bearings deliver a ride that is ber-smooth at any speed. At just 12 ounces and 5 inches long, the Velocity micro trolley is poised to give its big brothers a run for their money. Ropes Course Cable Pulley (G). Two versions offer a secure way to provide a running belay on rope or cable. The RP126 has an aluminum sheave for a lighter, alternative on rope; RP127 ts a stainless steel sheave in the same package for high performance on cable. Shear Reduction Blocks. Our proven full-sheave model (I) features generously sized sideplates that extend past the sheave to protect the rope, and a locking bolt that allows the sheave to be reversed to extend the useful life. Creating Innovative Products...and American Jobs At CMI, innovation and American quality go hand-in-hand. Over the past several years, your business has allowed us to expand our factory and bring more machinery--and American jobs--under our roof. This, in turn, lets us prototype products more quickly, moving new ideas from the drawing board to your hands quicker than ever before, and create smaller batches of custom products at a lower cost than with traditional manufacturing methods.

Quality

Quality...Not Just Job One

When your life is on the line, you need to know that you can trust, without question, the gear supporting you. CMI has provided gear of unquestionable quality for over thirty-ve years. But its not enough to rest on the laurels of the awless track record set by the hundreds of thousands of eight rings and pulleys weve shipped. We spend every day working to ensure that every product leaving our factory meets the high standard set by those that came before it. The only way to be absolutely certain of the quality of each product leaving our factory is to test each one to destruction, a strategy that is obviously not possible. The next best way is to develop a quality management system that ensures each item manufactured is exactly like the one before it and the one after it, then subject a random sample to destructive testing. Data derived from closely monitored testing procedures can then be applied to all products manufactured under that system. CMI has chosen to benchmark its products and manufacturing systems against three world-class standards: The ISO. To that end, CMI has developed a Total Quality Management (TQM) system compliant with the widely recognized ISO 9001:2000 standard. ISO 9001 defines what procedures must be in place to ensure c o n s i s t e n t q u a l i t y, how those procedures are developed and implemented, and how
This Ultra 8-ring was pulled to 9200 pounds, when the steel carabiner supporting it failed. Deformed but not fractured, the CMI Ultra 8 survived.

Our custom built in-house harness test rig allows us to test all types of harnesses in a variety of positions.

and when we may deviate from them. It is important to note that the ISO standard attests to the TQM system, not the products manufactured under it. Each of our designs is developed to exceed applicable industry or governmental standards. The TQM system ensures that each individual copy of every product matches our standard of quality. The NFPA. CMI offers NFPA compliant versions of many pulleys, descenders, ascenders and other products. These products are manufactured side-byside with their civilian counterparts; the only difference between them is extra documentation and packaging required by the NFPA standard, and a slight cost premium associated with that packaging. The UIAA. This year, CMI has introduced a line of pulleys certied to meet the UIAA 127 Standard on Mountaineering and Climbing Pulleys. The Union Internationale des Associations dAlpinisme (UIAA) standards on mountaineering and climbing equipment are widely regarded as the most comprehensive standards in the industry. These pulleys have been slightly modied to meet the particulars of the standard, but remain in every way equivalent to their non-certied counterparts. The new pulleys were submitted to an independent, UIAA approved testing laboratory for certication. Just like the NFPA versions, the slightly higher cost of these models reects the additional documentation demanded by the UIAA standard. Compliance vs. Certication Traditionally, after developing a system that ensures compliance with a standard like the NFPA 1983, ISO 9001 or UIAA 127, a manufacturer contracts an outside auditor to review the procedures and issue a certication. This process can be quite lengthy and prohibitively expensive.

CMI has chosen to self-audit against the NFPA and ISO standards, an option allowed by both organizations. All our procedures were developed with certication in mind, and the system runs as though it might be audited at any time. After the TQM system was fully implemented, an extensive internal review veried each element against the standards and found our systems to be 100% compliant. Therefore, CMIs TQM system is advertised as being ISO 9001 Compliant and our NFPA products are marked NFPA Compliant. All that separates us from true certication is a costly third-party audit. (The UIAA standards do not allow for self-auditing, thus all of CMIs UIAA-certied products have been certied by an outside agency.) What the Numbers Mean CMIs product certication begins with rigorous inhouse testing of every component and nished product. A random sample is subjected to destructive testing on our Tinius-Olsen 60,000-pound testing machine, using an assortment of custom designed and built testing rigs to determine its failure load. The individual breaking strengths are recorded, and then the statistical mean and standard deviation are calculated. The Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) is calculated by subtracting three standard deviations from the mean, and then rounding down to the nearest hundred pounds. This procedure ensures that 100% of our products will perform up to their rated MBS without failure. Products are marked with the MBS in both pounds and kilonewtons, in accordance with different standards. We use pounds throughout this catalog in order to maintain a clarity and usefulness for our users; the equivalent in kilonewtons can be calculated by dividing the MBS in pounds by 224.9. Please remember that the MBS is not a safe working load; it is up to each individual user to determine an adequate safety margin for their particular application. Ascender springs are subjected to repeated exion and extension on our spring testing machine to simulate several lifetimes of normal use. The test is terminated after a million cycles have been completed. We test pulley efciency by building a lifting rig of identical pulleys in a conguration consistent with their intended use, then winch a 600 pound mass while taking continuous measurements with a Dillon Electronic Dynamometer. The efciency number we report represents the actual ratio of output force to

input force under real-world conditions, not a calculated ideal. Special Services Testing. CMI can perform tensile and compressive strength testing in accordance with national standards. Our testing equipment is maintained in a state of accurate calibration which is veried regularly by an outside agency. Custom rigs allow us to test hardware, soft goods, and harnesses in accordance with ASTM 1772-97. Design and Production. Dont see a product that ts your needs? Dozens of products in this catalog started as an idea from one of our customers.
