UNIT- A

READING: Exposure to a variety of reading materials, articles, essays, graphic
representations, journalistic articles etc. Controlling factors for the choice of reading
materials will be (a) the level of the learners (b) relevance of material to the learner's
needs and (c) appropriate passages for imparting the desired skills.

Skills to be Developed: Skimming , Scanning, Increasing and varying reading
speed, Word-attack skills for solving vocabulary problems, and text-attack skills for
getting conceptual, prepositional, contextual and pragmatic meanings. Note-Making

UNIT-B

Writing: Exposure to a variety of writing activities. Controlling factors will be the
learner's level, needs and expected terminal behaviour.

Skills to be Developed: Express ideas, concepts etc. in an unambiguous,
grammatically acceptable and logically coherent manner (in general terms): and ,in
particular, skills in sentence construction, paragraph-writing, professional writing such
as letters, reports, process writing, graphic representations, description and
avoidance of idealisms, complex and confusing style and other errors. (15 Hrs)

Speaking: Exposure to a variety of speaking activities: general social conversation,
communication through telephones, official conversation, group discussion,
interview and public speaking. Speech training in the areas of faulty pronunciation,
stress and intonation patterns: phonetics to the extent of enabling the students to use
the dictionary for the purpose of correct pronunciation: Use of dictionary for a variety

Listening: Exposure to listening for improving listening comprehension in a variety
of contexts : lectures, social conversations, presentations, public speeches, group

Coatings: Concept and structure, types, classification, potential and service properties of
coatings, geometrical and physico-chemical parameters of coatings, significance and
directions of development of coatings, characterization and evaluation of coatings.

Techniques for producing surface layers: Mechanical, thermo-mechanical, thermal,
thermo-chemical, chemical, electro- chemical and physical techniques.

Process fundamentals and applications of newest techniques of producing surface
layers: Electron beam and plasma coating processes, Laser assisted surface modification
processes, ion implantation techniques, glow discharge methods and CVD technology,
vacuum deposition by physical techniques (PVD).

1. INTRODUCTION :
History of air pollution, Problems and solutions.

2. AIR POLLUTION:
Air pollution sources and effects in relation to chemical industry., Behaviour and fate of air
pollutants, Photochemical smog, Effects of air pollution onhuman beings, plants, animals
and materials.

3. METEOROLOGICAL ASPECTS OF AIR POLLUTION:
Ttemperature lapse rates, Adiabatic lapse rate, Atmospheric stability, Inversions. Wind
velocity and turbulence; Topographical effects, Plume behaviour, Dispersion of air pollutants:
Fixed box models, Diffusion models, Gaussian plume model, Plume rise.

4. AIR POLLUTION SAMPLING AND MEASUREMENT:
Types of sampling and measurement, ambient air sampling: collection of gaseous air
pollutants, collection of particulate air pollutants. Stack sampling: sampling system,
particulate air pollutants. Stack sampling: sampling system, particulate sampling, gaseous
sampling. Analysis of airpollutants: Sulphur Dioxide, Nitrogen Oxides, Carbon Monoxide,
Oxidants and ozones, Hydrocarbons, Particulate matter.

5. AIR POLLUTION CONTROL METHODS AND EQUIPMENT:
Source correction methods: raw material changes, process changes, equipment
modification. Cleaning of gaseous effluents. Particulate emission control: collection
efficiency, control equipment like gravitational settling chambers, cyclone separators, fabric
filters, ESP and their constructional details and design aspects. Scrubbers: Wet scrubbers,
spray towers, centrifugal scrubbers, packed beds and plate columsn, venturi scrubbers, their
design aspects. Control of gaseous emissions: absorption buy liquids, absorption
equipment, adsorption by solids, equipment and the design aspects.

6. CONTROL OF SPECIFIC GASEOUS POLLUTANTS:
Control of sulphur dioxide emissions: extraction of sulphur from fuels, sulphur reduction
during combustion, desulphurization of flue gases. Nitrogen oxides: modification of
operating conditions. Modification of design conditions, effluent gas treatment methods.
Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, Pollution from mobile sources and its control.

7. SOURCES AND CLASSIFICATION OF WATER POLLUTANTS:
Water resources, origin of wastewater, types of water pollutants and their effects, water
pollution laws and standards.


8. WASTE WATER SAMPLINIG, ANALYSIS AND TREATMENT:
Sampling and methods of analysis. Determination of organic matter: dissolved oxygen,
BOD, COD, TOC. Determination of inorganiz matter: Nitrogen, Phosphorous, trace
elements. Physical characteristics: Suspended solids, colour and odour. Bacteriological
measurements. Water quality standards.

LINEAR PROGRAMMING :
Formulation and graphical solution of LPPs. The general LPP, slack, surplus and artificial
variables. Reduction of a LPP to the standard form. Simplex computational procedure, Big-
M method, Two-phase method. Solution in case of unrestricted variables. Dual linear
programming problem. Solution of the primal problem from the solution of the dual problems.

TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS :
Balanced and unbalanced Transportation problems. Initial basic feasible solution using N-W
corner rule, row minimum method, column minimum, least cost entry method and Vogels
approximation method. Optimal solutions. Degenracy in Transportation problems.

QUEUEING THEORY :
Poisson process and exponential distribution. Poisson queues - Model (M/M/1):(/FIFO) and
its characteristics.

ELEMENTS OF INVENTORY CONTROL :
Economic lot size problems - Fundamental problems of EOQ. The problem of EOQ with
finite rate of replenishment. Problems of EOQ with shortages - production instantaneous,
replenishment of the inventory with finite rate. Stochastic problems with uniform demand
(discrete case only).
