TECHNICAL NOTE EtherNet/IP Communication Products Listed Below

Date: July 2006 Dear Rockwell Automation Customer, The purpose of this Technical Note is to inform you of a functional issue that exists with the following Rockwell Automation products:

- Issue Description With the EtherNet/IP products listed above, hereafter referred to as the EtherNet/IP products, the following functional issue exists: Functional Issue Ethernet Communication Temporarily Stops IMPORTANT The functional issue described in this Technical Note only affects the EtherNet/IP products if they have been operating continuously for 825 days (i.e., 2.25 years). Each time power is cycled to the EtherNet/IP products, or they are reset, the count toward 825 days of continuous operation returns to 0. When the EtherNet/IP products operate continuously for over 825 days, the products stop responding to Ethernet TCP/IP packets for 20 minutes. The EtherNet/IP products return to normal operation after 20 minutes have elapsed. During the interruption, class 1 connections are also closed. The results of this issue are functionally equivalent to disconnecting the Ethernet cable from the EtherNet/IP products. If you cycle power to, or reset, the EtherNet/IP products during the 20-minute period where normal operations have stopped, the products return them to normal operation. To avoid this issue, upgrade the firmware on the EtherNet/IP products to the versions listed later in this Technical Note. -Temporary WorkaroundCycle power to, or reset, the EtherNet/IP products before 825 days of continuous operation to temporarily workaround the functional issue described in this note. In redundant systems with 1756-ENBT, initiate a commanded switchover (i.e., manual switchover) twice to reset both racks of communication modules.

Issue Correction

You must upgrade the firmware for your product to eliminate the functional issue described in this Technical Note. - Corrective Action Customers should take the following actions: Confirm that you have the affected products. If you have an affected module and want to avoid this issue, you must perform the upgrade to the appropriate firmware version listed above. Immediately contact your local Rockwell Automation Sales and Support office to determine the appropriate course of action. Together, you and the local office will determine the correction for your situation.
