A Study of Social Institutions of Sri Lanka as depicted in poetical works of the 19th century

This paper describes only caste system as social institution, changed the cast system in the 19th century in Sri Lanka. examine how to

Sri-Lanka suffered periodic invasions since the beginning of the 14th century by the super powers of the West. These invasions, subjected the traditional Sri Lankan social institutions society to substantial structural changes. Changes to social institutions became widespread and extensive and far reaching since the occupation of the whole Island by the British under the one rule. Although previously the country was invaded by the Portuguese and the Dutch, it was the implementation of the recommendations contained in the Colebrook Commission Report in the 19 th century that propelled Sri-Lanka into rapid change, in its social and economic progress. These social changes were the catalyst that brought about a significant progress and development in the economic, cultural, political, religious and educational progress of the country. The establishment of the printing press during the time of the British rule can be regarded as a profound social event in the history of Sri-Lanka. Introduction of modern technology into the country should be recognized as the greatest contribution by the British. It could be pointed out that this knowledge of technology changed the traditional social structures prevailing in Sri-Lankan society at the time. Poets began to depict the emerging contemporary society into poetry.

In this context how was Sri Lankan caste system through verses in 19th century.? Was there any different between caste and class.? Analyzing Sinhalese verses in 19th century can be find out various facts. Using Sri Lankan Museum Library , National Archives, and British library numerous original verses booklet can be find out. In this period verses were not represented classical tradition . It is absolutely written by the ordinary people. Thats why these verses were interesting . Changing traditional society and it shows that caste system was over come by class and and emerging new elite groups in this context. It is different to Indian caste system and Sri Lankan caste system. It is clear that new system of modern society caste system cant be existed . Rev.
