Executive summary
This report records the development of the application ACE Translator. It is an application that utilizes the voice recording and voice detection mechanism to provide a translation which is quick in response and accurate. The ACE Translator is the perfect solution to language barriers and this will prove to be an essential tool for every profession. The ACE Translator target customers are from tourist, government officials and in the education sector although the development cost for this application is approximately RM4000, the cost promises to be a worthy investment as the expected sales are promising. The Idea Generation phase which marks the initiation of our project, involves the application the Brainstorming techniques which resulted in a generation of 40 ideas. The ideas are then evaluated based on the NAF (Novel, Attractive and Fee sable) criteria which reduce the amount of ideas to 8. In order to further evaluate our ideas we then applied the spend $100 technique in which every member is given an imaginary $100 to invest on ideas whether to spend the whole sum on 1 idea or distributing the funds according to preferred ideas. The amount of ideas was the further reduced to 2 in which the team agreed to perform de Bonos Six Thinking Hat technique to evaluate the remaining 2 ideas to determine its strengths and weaknesses. The Six Thinking Hats technique enables the systematic and procedural thinking based on each hats thus making judgment of an idea accordingly from different perspective mainly based on judgmental, emotion, positive, neutral, creative and statistical values. Lastly we referred to the Six Serving Men to seek related information to develop our prototype. In the Idea Diffusion phase our team presented the ACE Translator to a group of audience. The presentation involves collection of feedback through distribution of a feedback form and conducting Question and Answer (Q&A) session. The feedbacks provided us with comments and suggestions from the public which we evaluated with the PMI (Plus Minus and Interesting) technique in order to justify whether to adopt or discard the suggestion. We further evaluate the ACE Translator based on the Triple Bottom Line concept to ensure that our product is an efficient product that takes care of the welfare of the public and environment. To ensure the success in executing the commercializing of the ACE Translator, we constructed a Gantt Chart to aid our planning and preparation for future activities to make sure that we complete our task on time. In conclusion, the ACE Translator is a tested and well planned product that took long hours of research, evaluation and development which will satisfy the demands of potential customers and our expectations.

Introduction Background The main idea behind our group from the first day was to come up with an innovative product that is very unique and that can successfully be commercialized through the three stages of the innovation value chain (IVC). The result of our innovation was a very simple and effective voice translator (THE ACE TRANSLATOR). This voice translator was made to solve the biggest and the most common problem among people which is language. The ACE TRANSLATOR aims to mostly solve the language problems that are found among students, tourists and business men. . With this benefit in mind, we have determined our target customers to be within the range of tourist, government officials and students as all of these individuals require a mastery in various languages.

1.2

Purpose The purpose of this report is to document the progress of our team throughout the execution of our assignment. This report aims to explain all the steps, problems and progress our team encounter and achieve throughout the six weeks period. The report will explain everything from the range of team formation to product development which is arranged in order based on the IVC chain.

1.3

Scope Scope includes the three stages of the innovation value chain (IVC) Idea Generation team formation and brainstorming Idea Conversion idea selection and development (more info) Idea Diffusion presentation of the product, collection of feedback and the commercialization Methodology 1.4.1 Primary research We used magazines, newspapers and Internet for the primary research. 1.4.2 Secondary research Our group used survey forms, questionnaires and informal discussion sessions to gain more of the information about the public view on language problems

1.4

2.0 Idea Generation 2.1 Team Formation Upon the announcement of an Innovation and Change project our group was given the liberty to socialize and form our own group based on personal preferences. It was at this period that Abdul Najib Azhfar, Arslan Uthman Ali and Al-Mohaiminul Islam Khan decided to form a team together to complete the project. The reasons behind the formation of the team are as following : We had similar interest in the field of technology specifically computers. We had met each other a few times prior to the formation of our group thus we are familiar with each other. We speak a similar language- English- making communication easy among us. We had different backgrounds coming from different countries, speaking different languages, and had different traditions. We had different skills and knowledge that when combined broadened our capabilities. Dr Belbin (Ho, 2012, week 7, slide 23 ) stated that each individual has different abilities and strengths which can be personified into different roles. Based on that description our group consist of members with different roles. Table 1 Member Roles and Characteristics Name Abdul Najib Azhfar bin Aini Role Coordinator Resource Investigator Action Orientated Implement Cerebral Arslan Uthman Ali People Orientated Resource Investigator Enthusiastic Keep trying new things Many creative ideas High efficiency Ignore the factors Easily lost concentration Strengths Disciplined Reliable High efficiency Enthusiastic Many creative ideas Weaknesses Dominating Inflexible

In general our team is fulfils the characteristics of an idea generating team. Based on our knowledge of existing problems, our team develop ideas that could idea overcome the problems of reduce the issues raised by existing problems. Based on Robbins et al (Foundation of Management,2006) our team possess the criteria of an effective team as we have a clear goal, presence of individuals with relevant knowledge and abilities , good communication between members and an appropriate and efficient leadership. As a whole, the team readily put in extra efforts and time to ensure the process of completion runs smoothly throughout the period of the project.

The reasons behind the appointment of Najib as our group leader were based on a few criteria: He can easily communicate with people He has adequate leadership skills He is calm and democratic He is easy and outgoing He is responsible

According to Tuckmans Stages of team development (Ho, Week 7, Slide 22) the development of our team throughout the 6 weeks period is as described: Table 2 Tuckmans Stages of Team Development Stage Description

Forming

The team was formed during learning session in class following an allocated time. Abdul Najib Azhfar was appointed as leader in the first meeting which was followed by the distribution of tasks, the agreement of meeting time and venue for the period of project completion. Each member was assigned roles in order to ensure the involvement of everyone regardless of strengths and weaknesses. We faced some issues within the early quarter of project completion like conflicting ideas and disagreement of meeting venue and time. In order to overcome this situation a meeting was held to come up with a compromise among members regarding the goal of the team, meeting time and venue which is convenient for every member. After the 1st quarter of the 6 weeks, the relationship among team members developed. Due to this, the team works better and the teams synergy improved. The led to our friendship becoming closer owning to the fact that we were presented the opportunity to get familiar with each other and understand each others character. With the development of our relationship our team was able to work better as a unit. Being aware of each other weaknesses, we aided each other in areas where a member lacks the skills required in order to perform excellently

2.2

Brainstorming Our team has the objective to generate an innovative idea to solve current difficulties in the basic activities in life mainly communication and poverty so we carried out a brainstorming session. The brainstorming session was led by our leader, Najib. The session was conducted thrice in order to meet the aim of the brainstorming session. The first brainstorming session was conducted in Swinburnes Library resulting merely 10 ideas and the consecutive sessions were carried out at Swinburnes Male Hostels Common Lounge and produced 10 and 20 ideas respectively. The objective set for our Brainstorming sessions is to come up with at least 12 ideas per person and we agreed on the rule that no ideas will be judge pre-maturely as every idea is considered equal with another during this stage. The table below records the detail of our brainstorming session. Table 3 Brainstorming Procedure

Determining a clear objective

Our teams objective in our brainstorming session is to solve existing life problemsproblems stemming from miscommunication and the lack of quality of existing products-. This objective was set after compiling the aims suggested by each member to form an objective which satisfies every members suggested objective. Our sessions had verifying time lengths. The sessions were 2 hours,1 hours and half an hour respectively. Our team emphasize the importance of quantity instead of quality. In order to ensure that our team will be able to generate a generous amount of idea, the team unanimously agreed to suspend judgement of idea on this phase regardless of how absurd an idea sounds. Our team believes that quantity is better than quantity as it provides us with a variety of ideas. We took turns recording ideas generated and with 3 sessions each member had a chance to fulfil the role of being the secretary. Our brainstorming session was considered successful as the team managed to come up with 40 ideas exceeding initial assumptions by 4 ideas. Every idea was recorded systematically for further evaluation and consideration.

Idea Conversion Idea Selection Based on the 40 ideas our team generated our team applied several techniques in order to shortlist our ideas. We applied are the Item by Item (NAF criteria),Spending $100 and de Bonos Six Thinking Hats technique in order to determine which is the best idea for our team to develop. These technique ensure all of our decisions are impartial, free for external influence and bias.

3.1.1 Item by Item (NAF criteria) We evaluate our idea by characterizing each idea based on the NAF (Novel (N), Attractive (A), and Feasible (F)) criteria. A is marked to indicate the fulfillment of a criteria and the are tallied in order to determine the top 8ideas that fulfill the most criteria (Ho, 2012, Week 6, slide 22). From the table above we have recorded the evaluation by each member and the ideas with 6 and 7 are shortlisted for further evaluation. The advantage of applying this technique is that it will enable each member to be involved and it can be executed privately or publically thus making the evaluation of each idea free from external influences. From our evaluation we have shortlisted our ideas to 8 which are :

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

3.1.2 Spending $100 to evaluate ideas The shortlisted 8 ideas are then further evaluated by application of the $100 technique. Each member is task to invest an imaginary $100 on ideas based on personal preferences. The rule of these techniques is that every member is free to spend $100 on an idea or to divide it to fund several ideas. The total sum of investments will then be ranked to further reduce our list of 15 ideas to a list of top 2 ideas (Ho, 2012, Week 6, slide 24). Table 6 Spending $100 Evaluation Names

From our evaluation we have reduced the list of ideas from 8 to 2 ideas. In order to determine the 1 idea we will develop for our assignment the team agreed do further evaluation on the remaining ideas based on de Bonos Six Thinking Hats technique. 3.1.3 Six Thinking Hats Technique From the reduced number of ideas our team applied de Bonos Six Thinking Hats technique to thoroughly evaluate the idea our team will pursue. The advantage of this technique is that it enables each member to systematically evaluate an idea and also ensures the success of idea evaluation. The hats will help evaluation based on various perspective thus the ideas will be able to be effectively evaluated, differentiated and with all factors in consideration our team will be able to single out a good idea. The Six Thinking Hat evaluation is as follows : Table 7 Accomodation arround mosque Type of Hat Blue Hat Ideas Black Hat Determine the funds required and the people and organizations involved. To estimate the methods,to study necessary skills regarding setting up a foundation and to prepare the framework of this idea. There will be some problems regarding insufficient space and violation of the privacy of mosque users, visitors and surrounding

inhabitants Some people will violate this feature and there will arise some social problems This idea will improve our countrys image in the eyes of the world By applying this ideas across our nation we will be able to reduce poverty and starvation thus increasing productivity My gut tells me that this idea will be hard to implement. I have a feeling that we will gain huge support from the public . Instead of only liasing with the Government we couyld seek cooperation from private sectors and Non Government Organisations to raise funds and require professional assistance. Studies has shown that a huge global problem we face today is poverty. History records that the muslim view of a mosque ius that it serves various purpose as a place to perform worshiping,a place to seek education and as a place for commerce(arround the area surrounding the mosque)

Table 8 ACE Translator(Application) Type of Hat Blue Hat Ideas Yellow Hat Red Hat Green Hat Determine the required funds to construct and develop this idea. To estimate the required skills and materials to produce a productive system. The many languages, dialects and slangs will make this idea difficult to implement. Not everyone owns a smartphone and not everyone who ones a smartphone really knows how to use it. This idea will be an instatnt hit among bussines personals and among government officials. This idea will solve all problems regarding miscommunication and language barriers. I have a feeling that this idea will be a necessity in our community in a short period of time. My intuition tells me that this idea will be able to gain huge amount of profit. We can expand our horizon from being simply a translator to being an educational application to provide details regarding other cultures.

We could liase with various telecomunication services and providers and produce a standard application for every mobile phone which links to different application like the Nokia OVI Map. A census record that some 28 million U.S citizens speak Spanish at home and has limited understanding in English (Armas GC,2009,CBSNEWS) Studies shows that being billingual secures more job opportunities and a better salary (Davies C,2000,University of Florida News)

Based on this evaluation our team decided to pursue the ACE Translator as it is more affordable and this idea requires skills that our team have acquired in our previous study as compared to setting up accomodation arround the mosque which involves many formalities and skills we do not have at present. 3.2 Idea Development

3.2.1 Information Requirement To develop the idea, our team agreed that we needed in-depth knowledge and information regarding the ACE Translator. In order acquire sufficient knowledge our team used the Six Serving Men principle to gain information that satisfy all the aspects we require. Generally, our team benefited from both primary and secondary data. Our primary source is from magazines, newspapers and Internet whereas our secondary source is acquired from interviews and informal discussion sessions.

Table 9 Six Serving Man Information required How should we build our application interface like? Why is our product different from existing ones? What should our product cost? Why would the public use our application? Possible sources Conducting interviews with target groups. Gathering information regarding available translators and applications through the Internet

Research on the publics opinion on available translators and demand for a similar product.
14

Where should our product be marketed(distributed) ? How can we reduce or cover our cost significantly without affectiung the endproduct and our profit? Who are our target customers? Who will be placed with the responsibility of providing and maintaining our application? How shall our product be promoted to penetrate our target market? When will our product be available to the market?

Conducting informal meetings with members to share information acquired over past experiences and interviews with IT students. Research on the Internet on application markets Search for required materials and softwares online

This application can be used in various professional fields mainly tourism, government and industrial. Consult application creators and advertizing consultants Research on various domains for affortability and availability Consult advertizing agents who are experienced in marketing strategies and the techniques. After the application is operational and the domain has been set up.

3.2.3 Features and Functions The translator is used to perform voice translation. It is compatible on all operating systems s like Android (Samsung), Symbian (Nokia) and iOS (iPhone). Firstly, we recorded over 100 voices of each words of a specific language. Among them, the numbers of both male and female adults were 40 and rests of them were under 18. All of the recorded voices were stored on a domain (A cyberspace which is used to save all of those recorded voices with the info of those each recorded voice wave). To use the ACE Translator, the device should have 64 MB RAM and Internet access. Whenever an individual uses the ACE translator on their device, the user has to connect a headset to their device and at the same time connect to the internet. Though after starting the app, it will ask to do so if not done. After starting, the user has to press the record button and then it will be ready to get the input voice. After finishing the record, the user again has to press the same record button.
15

Subsequently the translator will then connect to the Internet to match the wave from the domain. The closest matched waves recorded voice will come from the domain via Internet to the user device.

After that, it will be played through users device speakers.

3.2.4 Benefits of ACE Translator Table 10 Benefits of ACE Translator The benefits of our application can be seen by comparison with existing translators as shown below: Conventional translator (available translators) ACE Translator

Expensive and unavailable for the general Affordable and available for the general public public Requires a lot of memory for storage Requires minimum memory and stores information online with basic memories stored on devices for convenience Easy to navigate and use Accurate and faster Languages not limited at a time(can be obtained through download) Utilizes voice recording and translate system Users need not know or spell intended language as intended languages will be detected by the application

Difficult to navigate and use Inacurate and slow Limited languages available at a time Utilizes the type-to-translate system Users are required to know the spelling and source of the intended language

3.2.5 Prototype model To present our idea to the audience we constructed a diagram that resembles our product. We used the paint software to create a few images

The mechanism of our application is simple. As it domain stores languages and their pronounciation, the application only records, detects and search for the translation of the intended language and play the translation through the phone. The selection of imput data undergo a series of comfirmation sequence in which if it the recorded voice has a 90% connection with the intended translated language the selected data is then transmitted to the device used by the user. If this is not achieve the application will do an on-going search until after 3 attempts,a match of 50% ill instead be used as an output.

Idea Diffussion 4.1 Idea Feedback After the completion of the idea development phase,we presented the ACE Translator an audience consisting of our target customers and organized a Question and Answer session before distributing Feeback Forms to collect responses from the public. The advantage of collecting feedback is that5 it enables us to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of our product and opens up path to improvements. 4.1.1 Feedback collecting methods The feedbacks on our producct was collected from 12 respondents who are the audiences at our presentation based on the methods as shown below :
18

Table 14 Feedbeck Collection Methods Method Question and Answer Session (Q&A session) Prosedures The idea is presented to the audience during the presentation The audience responds to our presentation with comments and questions. We respond to the questions and comments by providing answers and related informations. The responses are noted by Khan. Feedback forms were distributed after the presentation

Feedback forms

4.1.2 Analysis and feedback The team decided to meet to discuss, evaluate and analyse the feedback obtained on the day of our presentation. A variety of criterias such as pricing, design, features and improvements was set in order to systematically evaluate the feedback we collected. Based on the feedback we collected about 80% of our audience agreed that available translators dont cater peoples need. Several issues were raised including expensive prices, unreliability, inaccurate translation and difficult interface. Relating to this issue, about 85% of the respondends expressed interest and acceptance to use our product due to its simplicity, reliability, accuracy and affordable price. Overall, our products generated positive reaction from the public making the result of our idea positive .Thus it can be concluded that the positive feedback we obtain is mainly due to the price, features, reliability and simplicity of our product. Table 15 Analysis of Feedback Comments 1. Can you reduce the price? 2. Can you update the interface design? 3. Can you change the size of this application? 4. 21

From our evaluation the ACE translator will not be made cheaper as it is already extremely cheap with a price of RM1.00. The ACE Translator will be featured in a bigger size making it perform better and faster whereas pending research will lead to this application receiving future upgrades to include other functionbs related to its basic function.

4.1.5 Triple Bottom Line Concept Aside from the criterias stated previously, the development and modifications of our product also took in consideration of the Triple Bottom Line concept (Ho,2012,Week 11,slide 16) as stated in the table below : Table 18 Triple Bottom Line Elaboration Criteria Ecconomically viable Elaboration ACE Translator promisses profit for every download and purchase of the application. The domain we used to store and update languages will also serve as a source of income as potential advertistments activities at our internet related interface promise revenues. The Premier version of our product is also tiped to be a huge income generator due to its affordable price and functions. ACE Translator, being an application, does not pose health hazard and as the application does not deal with text based translationb the risk of deteriorating users eyesight is reduced significantly if not completely, therefore our product does not harm the society in any way. As an application,ACE tanslator doesnt produce any harmful effects to the environment.

In conclusion our product is set for commercialisation after the implementaion of approved suggestions.

4.2

Commercialization

22

In order tro ensure commercializing activities for our ACE Translatorrun smoothly, the team decided to draw up a Gantt Chart. In order to draw up a Gantt Chart our team prepared a table which has the specifications of the indicated tasks are presented on the left column while their respective assigned owners are represented at the colomn at their near right. The table records our activities for the past 6 weeks. The table ensures that every member is clear of their task and their respective due dates. From the table we constructed the Gantt Chart to represent our progress visually, this aid our monitoring of the teams progress.
