Meters Vending Feature Description

PREFACE

This feature offers a discrete way of charging different prices based on: payment method (cash, cash card, or units card) the access code programmed on the card, in cases where cards are used.

A pricing table in the parameters allows the user to set one price for cash at each price level, and separate prices for cash cards and units cards under each of the four access codes at each price level. In standard mode (two price levels) this means two cash prices and 16 card prices. In steering mode (eight price levels) this means 8 cash prices and 64 card prices. PIN cards dont use pricing but count the number of vends at each of the price levels. All meter data is stored based on access code as well. The pricing table is shown on page 43.

The 55-Raptor Series Vending Access Control Terminal (VAC terminal) is a multifunctional credit and debit card reader that controls access to copier machines, microfiche readers, or any other device that can be controlled with a relay closure. Customers use pre-encoded magnetic stripe cards with units, cash, or PIN accounts to pay for products or services. The Vending Access Control Terminal is part of the Raptor series of products from XCP, which encompasses a full line of vending products.

Vending Access Control Terminal products accommodate multiple price tables for up to four different user groups according to card type (Cash or Units). A separate PIN card accounting system logs the number of vends at each price level. Patrons are charged either for each operation, or according to the amount of time they access the device (time vending). Prices are determined by the seller.

The type of cards your reader uses is determined by the model number of the Vending Access Control Terminal (see the table on page ix). The unit will accept Cash and Units debit cards and PIN cards, as well as program cards for administrative use. The reader saves the current value of a card in battery-backed RAM. When a card fails, an operator can later restore this value.

When a user card is inserted in the reader, the cards value is recorded in RAM and displayed on screen. As transactions occur, the displayed value is updated, but the value stored on the cards magnetic stripe is not updated until the card is ejected. When the user presses the Eject button, the reader pushes the card out while writing the new value to the card. To prevent a person from expending value on a card, then manually pulling the card out of the reader before the value is debited, we write a zero value to the card when it is first inserted. Since the cards value is recorded as $0.00 until all transactions are complete, anyone attempting remove a card during a vend walks away with a card that has no value.

The Raptor family of Vending Access Control Terminals supports an API command set through an on-board port that allows you to access PIN accounts, set parameters, and download meters right from your PC. Although the VAC terminal is designed for copier vending, it also supports much of the functionality of the Computer Vending Station product series. The API allows the terminal to communicate with a PC while connected to a copier, and to vend from both simultaneously. This makes it possible to: Use the VAC terminal with many of the multifunctional copier devices available today. Substitute the VAC terminal for a Computer Vending Station, if needed in a pinch.

In the event of a power failure, a power-saving feature saves all parameters (card type, card value, and escrow), and restores them when power is restored.

The Vending Access Control Terminal offers an extensive capability for tracking vend activity. Meters can be viewed on the display, printed out, uploaded to a PC, or imported into a spreadsheet.

Every time a customer makes a selection on a vending device, such as a copier, a pulses (signals) are detected by theVAC terminal through an optical isolator or opto. Optos allow theVAC terminal to see a particular condition inside the vending device. Based on the customers selection, individual optos are turned on or off. The debit price is determined by the collective state of the optos. The software determines whether there is enough money to cover the vend, and if so, turns on a relay (switch) that enables the device to make the vend.

The VAC terminal connects to the host device via a harness, which plugs into the DB15 connector. The terminal uses either standard or steering pulse detection to intercept signals it receives over that connection. Configuring the terminal to operate in standard or steering mode requires setting the jumpers on the Raptor board and enabling the respective mode in the software. An illustration of the Raptor board is provided on the next page.

Set jumpers JP2 JP5 on the Raptor board to pins 2 and 3. Enter the Timing Menu and set the Steering parameter to No (see Chapter 3 for instructions on how to set parameters.)

The VAC terminal monitors four different pulses from the vending device. Three of the signals carry information about the selection made by the patron. The other signal is the debit pulse.

When the patron inserts a card or cash, three optos (optos 2, 3, and 4) in the VAC terminal register the selection conditions in the vending device to determine the vend price. If the value on the card or in escrow is enough to cover the price level selected, then relay 2 enables the vending device. When a vend is made, a debit pulse is sent from the vending device to the VAC terminal. This pulse is registered by opto 1, and the appropriate price is debited from the card (or cash) or is logged to the customers PIN account. When the value on the card or in escrow falls below the selected price level or the patron ejects the card, rela y2 is disabled until either more money is inserted or a lower price level is selected.

* Opto 1 registers the debit pulse and does not affect pricing.

In standard mode, the vending device can offer only two price selections. Each selection transmits its own debit pulse, which is registered in theVAC terminal by an opto dedicated to that pulse. Two corresponding relays enable the vending device at the appropriate price level.

For this scenario, lets assume the vending device is a copier and that the price 2 selection costs more than the price 1 selection.
1 2

The customer inserts a card into the card reader. The value on the card is compared with both price 1 and price 2. If the value on the card or in escrow is greater than or equal to price 1, relay 1 is enabled. If the value on the card or in escrow is greater than or equal to price 2, both relay 1 and relay 2 are enabled.

Think of an opto as a switch that is turned either on or off, depending on the information it receives from the signal it monitors. The customer makes a selection and presses the copy button. The incoming debit pulse is detected by the corresponding opto. If the appropriate relay for that price level was enabled (i.e., there was enough value on the card), the card is debited and the copy is made. If a price 1 debit pulse was detected by opto 1, theVAC terminal debits price 1. If a price 2 debit pulse was detected by opto 2, theVAC terminal debits price 2.

The customer continues making copies. When the value on the card or in escrow falls below a price level, the corresponding relay is disabled, and subsequent debit pulses for that selection are ignored. The relays are also disabled if the user ejects the card.

Time vend is active only in standard mode; steering mode does not support this feature. Time vend operates from cash, Cash cards, Units cards, and PIN cards.
1 2 3

Set the reader and controller board to operate in standard mode (see instructions on page 7). Make sure all Timing Menu parameters are set correctly (directions for setting these parameters can be found on page 39). Set the Time Vend and Time Vend Delay parameters (see page 37).

Time vend operates in auto-debit mode, meaning that when each time-vend period runs out, relay 2 remains enabled, and a new time-vend period automatically starts. The cycle continues until the value left on the card or in escrow falls below the vend price, at which time relay 2 is disabled. The unit will beep as the last session begins, warning the user to wind things up. When using a PIN card, the unit will beep at the start of the final session when the Max Vend limit has been reached (see page 28). The no activity timer is disabled during the time vend sessions. If the timevend session terminates because the card value falls below the vend price, the card is not ejected. In this case, the no activity timer will be re-enabled.

After the customer inserts a card or cash, the time vend delay gives the vend device time to start without taking time away from the time-vend period purchased. Press Eject to remove the card or press the coin return to recover unused escrow. Relay 2 will disable the device, but the time-vend period purchased and already in progress will continue to count down. If another patron inserts a card, relay 2 will re-enable and the current time-vend period will run out (allowing that patron some free vending time). Auto-debit will then resume, and the cycle will continue until the value of the new card falls below the vend price. In this case, time vend delay will not be activated.

Optos 1 and 2 are still active during time-vend mode; if they receive debit pulses from the vending device during a time-vend session, they will perform a debit.

A convenient way to set parameters is with the optional keypad available from XCP (see page 4). Unlike the push-button method, this tool allows you to enter numbers directly, backtrack to a previously displayed parameter, and exit out of program mode at any time. The keypad also allows you to perform PIN maintenance. Check the card reader and remove any card from the unit. Check for and remove any remaining escrow before proceeding. Plug the keypad into the DB9 jack on the rear of the CPU board. If the keypad is enabled, the unit will automatically enter program mode. If an error message informs you that the keypad is locked, insert the Read Any card and press the Eject button when the display prompts you to. Once the keypad is enabled, exit this menu by flipping the card over and re-inserting it. Now unplug the keypad and plug it in again to enter program mode.

Step through the parameters using the keys, as described in the table below, to change and save values. The first parameter youll see is Keypad. Set this parameter to No if you prefer to leave the keypad port locked when the machine is in service. This security feature is meant to prevent unauthorized access to the parameters. It will not take effect until you exit program mode. If you have stepped through all the available parameters, the display will read: Menu End. If you do not terminate program mode (by pressing Enter), the unit will do so automatically if doesnt detect activity for three minutes. All changes are saved in either case.

For units configured without a card reader, you can use the bypass key switch (a switch that is activated with a key) to: View non-resetable non-card meters Perform a manual payout of change from the coin dispenser Dispense free vends if the PC software allows it

Insert the bypass key switch where it fits in the slot on top of the Vending Access Control Terminal, and turn it once to the right. The non-resetable cash debit meters are displayed alternately on the display. They continue to flash until you turn the bypass switch off. If a printer is hooked up, the meters being viewed will automatically print at this time.

With the key turned, use buttons SW1 and SW2 on the expansion board as follows: To dispense a nickel, press SW1 To dispense a dime, press SW2 To dispense a quarter, press both buttons simultaneously. While the bypass key switch is activated, the unit is in bypass mode. During this time, coin and bill activity is registered only on the display; it is NOT recorded in the meters. Each time the operator inserts or manually dispenses cash, the net change is updated on the display. The Vending Access Control Terminal software does not monitor the coin sensors during manual payouts of cash. This means that is is possible to dispense change from an empty coin tube by accidentally pressing on the buttons. If this happens, the display will still show it as a coin paid out.

The Vending Access Control Terminal supports personal identification numbers (PINs) ranging from 09999. A terminal can store up to 1500 accounts at one time.

!MTQY UFTCE 0+2 QF YQ* UVPWQEEC 0+2 IPKVCXKVE#

PIN cards behave like credit cards. Unlike Cash and Units debit cards, which actually store a value that is decreased each time the card is used, PIN cards contain only an account number. Every time the PIN card is used, theVAC terminal records the number of vends made to that account by incrementing a counter. There is an internal counter for each price level. You cannot debit a PIN card.

A PIN account is activated in the terminals memory the first time the PIN card is inserted in the reader.

The maximum number of vends a customer can make with a PIN card is a programmable parameter; the default is 65,535 for all price levels combined. When the maximum number is reached, the counter (meter) will not roll over; instead, a message will be flashed momentarily and vending will be terminated. The card will be ejected and the customer will not be able to use that account until the meter is cleared. You can find out how to set vend limits on PIN cards by reading Set Max Vends (1 3) on page 28.

(Yes/No) Set this parameter to Yes to enter the PIN maintenance menu; set it to No to proceed to the setup parameters.

(Yes/No) This menu allows you to access parameters for setting vend limits on three groups of PIN accounts. Users with PIN cards that fall into a lockout range will be prevented from making more vends than specified by the lockout value (Max Vends) for that range. Max Vends keeps a running total of all price meters combined for that PIN account; you cant lock out individual price categories.

Setting the Set Max Vends (13) menus to No will allow you to skip to the next parameter, leaving the lockout ranges and vend limits at their present settings.

Change the Set Max Vends 1 menu to Yes. Define the lockout range by setting the lower and upper PINs.

CHAPTER 5: PIN ACCOUNTS

3 4

Set the Max Vends parameter to the number of vends you want those PIN accounts limited to. Use the Set Max Vends 2 and 3 menus to define vend limits for two more groups of PIN accounts.

To set a lockout value for an individual PIN card, see Price Meters on page 30.

If you dont want to define lockout ranges, you can reset parameters to their default settings. Follow the instructions above for defining a lockout range and value. Set the lower PIN to 0 and the upper PIN to 9999 for all three ranges. Set the maximum number of vends allowed for all PIN accounts to the system limit of 65,535.

Below is an example of how you can set vend limits on three groups of PIN accounts.

The maximum number of vends for PIN accounts not included in any of the three lockout ranges is 65,535.

(0 9999) The maximum number of PINs a VAC terminal can accommodate is 1500. You can delete individual PINs with the keypad. If you enter a valid account number when prompted by this parameter, that PIN account is deleted from memory. If you enter an account number that does not exist in the system, the unit will display a message that says the account was not found.

You can also type in the number of an account youd like to view, then press Enter. If the account you enter does not exist, the next highest account number will be displayed. Press the (+) and (-) keys to jump to the next highest or lowest account number in the system. Once an account is found, press the up and down arrow keys to view the lock status and meters.

FGMEQ.

(Yes/No) This parameter will tell you whether the PIN account found by the View PIN parameter is locked. You can change this parameter from the keypad or from a PC. PINs are most commonly locked because a user has lost his or her card, and you want to suspend activity on that card until the problem is resolved.

Price meters are stored for each PIN account; they are actually counters that increment each time a vend is made at a particular price level using that PIN card. There is a counter dedicated to each of the price levels. All price meters are listed in the PIN maintenance menu, whether or not the corresponding price levels are used by the vending device.

CHAPTER 5: PIN ACCOUNTS

To reset a price meter, simply set it to zero. When a vend is made at that price level, the meter will start incrementing again.

You can limit the vending activity of an individual account holder by manipulating the price meter for an unused price level.
1

If youve set PIN lockout ranges (see Set Max Vends (1 3) on page 28), check the Max Vends limit for the range this particular account falls into. For this example, well assume the limit is 1000. Decide how many vends you will allow on this PIN account; lets use 100. Subtract this number from the Max Vends value. The result is 900. Now set the unused price meter to 900.

2 3

Subsequent vends made at each price level are recorded in the price meters. All price meters including the unused one are added together and compared against Max Vends. After only 100 vends, the limit will be reached. The customer is charged only for vends made at the valid price levels.

When you print out a terminals PIN accounts, information recorded for all active accounts is printed whether or not an account has experienced activity.
1 2

Insert the Read Any card. Press the Eject button when Print PIN Account is displayed. The PIN number, locked status, and price meters for all valid PIN accounts is printed.

You can write the PIN account information to a file, which you can later import into a spreadsheet program. This data is written in comma-delimited ASCII format. Follow the steps for writing meters to a file. See Writing meters to a file on page 13 for instructions.

If the machine is programmed with low value (VC) software, you can format your own cards. User cards with a medium or high value license (see User cards on page 5) must be encoded for the first time at the factory. You can later re-encode them as needed.

Insert a Cash or Units program card. The unit will enter program mode. You can back out of this operation at any time (see below). If youve inserted a Cash program card, the first message displayed is Prog Amount : $xx.xx, where xx.xx is the cash value encoded on the program card. If youve inserted a Units program card, the message reads Prog Amt: xxxx, where xxxx is the number of units encoded on the program card.

Increase the value to be encoded on a user card by pressing the Eject button repeatedly until the desired value is displayed. You must start the cycle over again to decrease the value. Insert the user card that you want to program. The new card will now be automatically encoded with the newly selected value, the VC code, access code, and the card type (cash or units) of the program card you just removed. The unit displays the value being programmed on the left of the display, and the number of cards successfully encoded on the right side of the display. The unit keeps track only of cards encoded in the current programming session. For example: $1.00 #Cards: 50 shows that 50 cards have been encoded with a value of $1.00.

To finish programming user cards, press the Eject button.

If, after inserting a Cash or Units program card, you decide not to program any cards, simply insert a card upside down. When the unit has tried unsuccessfully to write to that card (the unit beeps and the screen displays the message Invalid Card , press the Eject button.

The PIN maintenance menu is the only menu that allows you to set parameters as well as to view and edit meters. The parameters and meters contained in this menu are described in Setting up and maintaining PIN accounts on page 28.

(Yes/No) You can use a keypad to program XCP products equipped with our Raptor-series controller board.

To enable a keypad, set the parameter to Yes using the expansion board or PC. Then simply plug the 4-by 4-character keyboard into the serial port on the CPU board. The unit enters program mode automatically. See Using the keypad to set parameters on page 12 for instructions on using this product and dealing with error codes.

Set the Keypad parameter to No. If youve set the parameter using the keypad itself, the change will not take effect until your next programming session.

(. / ,) This parameter toggles between the two currency separators. This separator will be seen in all menus, displays, and printouts, except the commadelimited ASCII file. In this case, the separator will default to a decimal point so that the commas can be used to distinguish between meter fields when read into a spreadsheet program.

(Yes/No) Set this parameter to Yes to display the dollar sign next to currency parameters; set it to No to disable the dollar sign.

This is the maximum cash value a patron can insert into the bill acceptor if a card was not inserted first. (If a card is inserted first, the Max Cash Card or Max Units Card is activated instead.) The maximum allowable value is $99.99 for low-value and $999.99 for high-value licenses.

This is the maximum card value the machine will accept. The maximum allowable value is $99.99 for low-value cards, $999.99 for medium-value cards, and $9999.99 for high-value cards.

This is the maximum number of units the Vending Access Control Terminal will accept on a Units card. The maximum number of units is 9999 for lowvalue cards, 99999 for medium-value cards, and 999999 for high-value cards.

APPENDIX A: DETAILED PARAMETERS

(9600 or 19200) Rate of serial communications transmission between the host PC and the unit, and the keypad and the unit. The keypad automatically detects the units baud rate and adjusts itself. If the baud rate is changed via the keypad, it takes effect only after program mode is terminated. Software running on the host PC might set this parameter automatically to achieve optimal performance.

(0 60:00) Allows you to set the amount of time for one time-vend period. Setting this parameter to zero disables time vending. Time vend works only in standard mode.

(0 5:00) This parameter is visible only if Time Vend is set to something other than zero. This delay period starts just after a card has been inserted and relay 2 enabled, but before the money is debited from the card or escrow. The purpose is to give the vend device time to start without taking time away from the time-vend period purchased.

(030:00) This is the amount of time in minutes and seconds that the Vending Access Control Terminal will wait when a patron has left either a card or escrow in the unit. Keep in mind that this feature is included to prevent patrons from walking away without their cards and to keep the unit from reverting to the idle state too quickly. If there is escrow alone in the unit, a timer will sound 15, 10, and 5 seconds before the No Activity timer expires. Then the fate of that escrow is dependent on the state of No Activity Payout (see below). If there is a card in the unit, an alarm will not sound. Remaining escrow will be transferred to the card, and the card will be ejected.

(Yes/No) This parameter is visible only if No Activity is set to something other than 0. It determines what happens to escrow when the no activity timer expires.

(Yes/No) If this parameter is set to Yes, the unit will act as a change machine. A patron can insert dollar bills and press the coin return to receive change back. If it is set to No, the patron must perform at least one vend before receiving change.

If set to Yes, the unit writes the balance to a card or pays it out in change. If set to No, the escrow amount is left on the display.

Set the parameter for the amount of time you want the unit to wait before taking action.

Setting No Activity to 0 will disable it. The card will stay in the unit indefinitely, and escrow will remain on the screen until someone comes along and revalues a card with it.

(Yes/No) This parameter determines whether the unit can be used for revaluing user cards. Set it to Yes to use the unit as a revalue station, permitting patrons to revalue their cards via the bill or coin acceptors. Set it to No to prevent the user from revaluing a card. The coin and bill acceptors are disabled if a card is inserted; or the card transport is disabled if cash has been deposited first.

(0 2.00) This parameter determines the amount of change that will be paid out when a patron inserts a card and presses the coin return. This parameter applies only to Cash cards. The Vending Access Control Terminal does pay out from Units or PIN cards.

APPENDIX A: DETAILED PARAMETERS

For example, assuming this value is set at $1, if a patron inserts a Cash Card and presses the coin return, $1 is dispensed in cash and that amount is removed from the cards value. The unit then ejects the card. If the value on the card is less than the $1 the patron requested, the unit dispenses the remaining value on the card, reducing its value to $.00.

(0-9999) Unique number used to identify individual Vending Access Control Terminal units. When the unit is configured at the factory, this parameter is set to zero. You should assign each machine at your site a unique number. This number is displayed at boot-up and printed at the top of a meter print out and ASCII file.

This is the delay between lines of text sent to the printer. Since the printer port does not use handshaking, it is necessary to put a delay at the end of each line of text sent to the printer to allow it to write the text before receiving the next line. The default setting is 175, which translates into a 1.1-second delay between each line. If this setting is too low, the resulting output will show lines running together. For example, if line 1 were to read Meters for Machine: and line 2 were to read Cards Sold: the resulting output might look like Meters For Cards Sold. Appendix D contains information on attaching a portable printer.

(0 3) This parameter turns on one, two, or three custom messages, which are displayed while the terminal is in the idle state (i.e., it is not processing any transactions). You need to download custom messages over the serial port using XCPs API protocol (call XCP for details). Set this parameter to 0 for the standard message to appear.

(0 50,000) This is the weight assigned to each pulse sent from a pulse bill or coin acceptor. If each pulse is worth $1.00, for example, you would set this parameter to 100.

(0-255) Access codes are a discreet way of differentiating between user types. For example, in a university environment students, teachers, and walk-in customers could all have different access codes. The Vending Access Control Terminal allows up to four access codes. Access codes are assigned by XCP and set at the factory. In most cases, they should not have to be changed. If you must change an access code, you can do so using your Cash or Units program cards (see Setting the units access codes on page 10). The access code is read from the card and assigned to the Vending Access Control Terminal. If you want to define more than one type of access, youll need more than one set of program cards, each encoded with a different access code.

(Yes/No) Timing parameters are set to match the timing of the host vending device. The values should be published in the host products documentation. Set this selection to Yes to enter the timing menu. Set the parameter to No to skip the timing parameters.

IPKTGGV5

(Yes/No) Use this parameter to set the software to either steering mode (Yes) or standard mode (No).

(00.000 30.000) This parameter is set in 50-millisecond increments. This is the minimum length of time, in seconds, a debit pulse must be active for it to be considered a valid debit pulse. Sense time 1: This parameter applies to opto 1, which registers the price 1 pulse in standard mode and the debit pulse in steering mode. Sense time 2: This parameter applies to opto 2, which registers the price 2 pulse, in standard mode only.

Setting the parameter to zero really sets it to 5 milliseconds, which might be enough time to flush out any noise. If Sense Time is set too short, the vend device could interpret noise as a debit pulse; if it is set too long, the machine might dispense free copies.

APPENDIX A: DETAILED PARAMETERS

(00.000 30.000) This parameter is set in 50-millisecond increments. This is the length of time, in seconds, after a valid pulse when any further pulses registered by that opto are ignored. Pulses on the other opto in standard mode will be recognized if still active after blind time expires. Blind time 1: This parameter applies to opto 1, which monitors the price 1 pulse in standard mode and the debit pulse in steering mode. Blind time 2: This parameter applies to opto2, which monitors the price 2 pulse, in standard mode only.

Blind Time masks unwanted pulses (i.e., double pulses or glitches). If this parameter is set too short, double debits could occur, but if set too long, vends could be missed.

(00.000 30.000) This parameter is set in 50-millisecond increments. The Reset Delay is the length of time, in seconds, that the relays stay energized after the job is terminated (i.e., the patron pushes the Eject button or the cardor escrow value falls below the vend price). If escrow falls below the vend price, Reset Delay does not occur until after Sense Time has expired. Reset Delay 1: This parameter applies to opto 1, which registers the price 1 pulse in standard mode and the debit pulse in steering mode. Reset Delay 2: This parameter applies to opto 2, which registers the price 2 pulse, in standard mode only.

The host device must be kept on long enough for the job to complete (e.g., for the paper to get through the copier without jamming), but not so long that another job starts (and copies are dispensed for free).

(Yes/No) Set this parameter to Yes for trailing edge debiting and to No for leading edge debiting.
IPKV KDGF GIF G IP KN K CT6

With this type of debiting, the software delays the debit until after the debit pulse goes inactive. This makes the Vending Access Control Terminal work with any device that requires a long debit pulse period to keep the relays

corresponding opto to go inactive. It waits for an indefinite length of time for this to occur. After the opto returns to inactive, the corresponding price is debited.

With leading-edge debiting, the debit occurs right after the Sense Time delay is satisfied. Todays high-speed copiers generally work best with this type of debiting because their pulse lengths occur in very rapid succession. The Sense Time and Blind Time can be completed soon after the copier vend signal returns inactive, leaving the system ready for another pulse. If the Sense

(00.000 30.000) This parameter is set in 50-millisecond increments. This is the length of time (in seconds) between the end of the Reset Delay and the moment the card is ejected. Eject Delay ensures that the card is held until the vending process is complete and all debits are in. If Eject Delay is set too short, the card could be ejected while the vending device is still running, resulting in free copies being dispensed. If it is set too long, customers might become irritated, waiting for their cards to be ejected.

APPENDIX A: DETAILED PARAMETERS

Note: Setting this parameter to zero actually sets it to 50 milliseconds.

(Yes/No) Set this parameter to Yes to enter the price menu. The price parameters you see will depend on whether the machine is operating in standard or steering mode. If the software is configured to operate in standard mode, only price 1 and price 2 will be seen for each of the four access codes. If the software is configured to operate in steering mode, there will be eight prices visible for each of the four access codes.

You can load the coin tubes in one of two ways without impacting the meters: Enter bypass mode with the bypass key switch. Deposit the change and turn off the key switch. Escrow will be cleared. Deposit the coins and use one of the methods described below in Clearing escrow to remove the escrow.

In the event that unwanted escrow is left on the LCD, it is possible to remove it without impacting the meters. This can be done in a number of ways. If the unit has a card reader, simply insert a program card; the escrow will be removed when the card is ejected. If this product does not contain a card reader, you can remove escrow by entering program mode from the push buttons or by entering bypass mode. Changing parameter values on page 7 describes how to perform these functions.

If a patron has inserted money, then tried unsuccessfully to transfer it to a card, the investment is not lost. After the Vending Access Control Terminal writes to a card, it draws that card back in and verifies that the write was suc-

cessful. The reader will try verifying the card five times before giving up and ejecting the card. If, for any reason, the machine is unable to write to a card, the reader saves the following data to memory. Card value Access code Card type

Insert the Read Any card and choose the recharge card option from the menu. The reader displays the last failure amount (the value that the system failed to write to the card) and prompts you to insert a card to revalue. If you decide not to recharge a card, press Eject to return to the idle state. Insert a NEW card (not the failed one) into the transport. The card will be recharged with the value displayed. This amount, along with the access code and card type, are then erased from the card readers memory. The card is ejected automatically.

Note: The Vending Access Control Terminal saves only one write failure value at a time. If a second card is inserted (and fails) before the value of the first card has been determined, the card reader will report only the value of the second card.

When the unit regains power, the data listed above is restored. If there is a card in the transport, the data will be written to the card and the card ejected. If there was escrow and no card in the unit before the power outage, that amount will be restored and the display updated. The patron can then continue with the transaction.

Read-Write Head Maintenance

We recommend that the read-write device be serviced on a regular basis. Depending on usage, service should be done every three to six months. When kept clean and properly adjusted, the read-write head will last approximately three to six years, depending on usage. There are two methods used in cleaning the read-write head. The method you choose will depend on how dirty the unit is.

Use a cleaning card to clean readers that are not extremely dirty. These cards are available in kits supplied by various manufacturers. When using a cleaning card, be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions. Points to remember while using cleaning card kits: The cleaning card should not be used more than once. Most cleaning cards come with a cloth-like surface on one side, which youll run across the head surface. To clean the drive tires, orient the card so the cloth side runs across the drive tires and hold the card stationary for a few seconds, letting the motor run. This will remove most of the dirt and oil that builds up on the drive tires during normal usage.

If the unit is extremely dirty or has not been serviced in the last six months, a more thorough cleaning should be done to ensure reliable operation. All maintenance should be done with the unit unplugged.

Unplug the reader and remove it from the housing. Place the reader upside down on the work surface to expose the bottom. Disconnect the ribbon cable (and buzzer harness, if applicable) from the side board of the reader. Disconnect the yellow head wires from the read/write head. Remove the two #4 nylon nuts, two nylon shoulder washers, and two compression springs from the head mounting posts. If applicable, disconnect the extension spring from the rear of the head holder. Lift the head and holder off the mounting post. Ensure that the brown shoulder washers remain on the post. Clean the head surface thoroughly with a paper towel and a non-abrasive cleaner such as isopropyl alcohol. Be sure to remove all dirt and oil before re-installing it into the reader. If applicable, connect the extension spring to the rear of the head holder. Place the head assembly onto the mounting posts. Make sure the head assembly is seated properly on the shoulder washers, with the collars coming up through the tabs of the assembly. Install the coil springs on the posts, then place the nylon washers on the posts with the collar down so it goes into the coil springs. Install the nylon nuts on the posts and tighten so that the coil springs are compressed, but do not let the shoulder washers touch. Place a card into the card bed and watch the head rise up on the card. The head should be level. If not, tighten or loosen the corresponding nylon nut to make the head level. Remove the card and verify that the head doesnt come in contact with the drive tire. The head should be a paper width away from the drive tire. Clean the drive tire with alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
