About the Course

Description of the course:
Course Description This course is developed on the premise that information system knowledge is essential for creating successful, competitive firms, managing global corporations, adding value and providing useful products and services to customers. It encompasses the fundamentals underlying the design, implementation, control, evaluation, and strategic use of modern, computer-based information systems for business data processing, office automation, information reporting, and decision making. Emphasis is on managerial and strategic aspects of information technology. An IT background is not required as it not a technical course. Course Objectives In order to determine the value of this course and to ensure that the concepts, principles, and problem-solving skills developed in the course will be applied on the job or in future academic settings, a set of objectives has been established. By the end of the course you should be able to fulfill a number of roles that require competency in the following four areas: Understand Foundational Concepts Students should be able to understand the information age and role of knowledge workers in it. They should be able to describe the role of IT in common business environments; identify and describe business processes and suggest several ways IT can be used to improve business processes; and report with clarity what managers must know about their businesses, their personnel and IT in order to make effective decisions. Assess the State of Current Technology Students should be able to describe specific hardware and software technologies used in businesses and relate these technologies to business needs on a local, regional, and global level. This will include the IT infrastructure and E-commerce technologies. Apply MIS to Meet Specific Enterprise Needs You should be able to relate specific IT enhanced business processes to decision-making and strategy development; explain what specific features of IT can produce a competitive advantage; and develop plans and strategies for the introduction of IT to a corporate environment using problem analysis and problem-solving techniques.

Teaching Methodology
Students will be required to read the chapters and reference materials related to the topic for the week. Key topics will then be discussed in the class. Students will be encouraged to share their understanding with the class, listen to other peoples views, give arguments and examples where necessary to reinforce their understanding. I will facilitate students to look at the practical implementations and utility of technology and systems we are studying. We will discuss real life examples of systems we are studying. Case studies, quizzes and hand on tasks will be used regularly to give students first hand knowledge of the hardware and software they are reading about.
