Military Children
April is the Month of the Military Child and in honor of these amazing children this newsletter will be focused on resources to assist our children in a multitude of areas. Our children first and foremost want to have friends and moving can be very hard on the social aspect of their life and so Military Kids Connect (www.militarykidsconnect.org) was born. This is a social media site designed to help military children ages 6 -18 stay connected with other military kids. For children of all ages there is MilKidz Club by Blue Star Families (www.bluestarfam.org/milkidz-club). This club was started to help our children connect with other military children and their families through blogging and attending sporting events their honor. Parents often hear school complaints about everything from teacher issues to classes to different grading systems. When an issue does arise parents can turn to the School Liaison Office, Treva Walter (678-3452), for assistance in working out these issues out. Also
become familiar with the InterState Compact (www.mic3.net). These are set guidelines that about 40 states have agreed upon to ease the transition from school to school for military children and it ranges from immunizations to high school exit exams. Another great resource just for military kids is tutor.com. School age children have access 24 hours a day to an online tutor for any subject. There is an abundance of scholarship and camp opportunities for military children. These are always posted on the Ombudsman FB page.
Future Programs
In the coming months there will be new programs for our children to attend. One is the Student 2 Student program designed for incoming high school students to feel welcomed and learn about the area from other high school students. For more information please contact the School Age Care CYP at 678-3310. Also, look for Vacation Bible School at the NAS JRB Chapel this summer. Dates will be set soon and all information will be posted on the Ombudsman FB page as well as future newsletters. A home school group is also trying to be established. The group would meet 1-2 times per month to swap ideas, play times for younger children, field trips and more. If you are interested please email me at nasjrbnolaombudsman@gmail.com.
