Math Coordinate Planes Key: Accommodations Made To Meet the Needs Of All Learners Purpose/Rationale According to the common core standards 5th grade students are expected to study the coordinate plane as a focus of the geometry unit. This lesson is an introduction lesson to graphing on the Coordinate (Cartesian) Plane. Common Core Standard: (5.G.1) What 1. 2. 3. 4. I did to prepare to plan and teach this lesson: Researched appropriate common core standard. Created an end of unit assessment. Researched materials to supplement the teaching of this unit. Printed materials and planned progression of unit.

Objective(s): The students will be able to Define: Point, Line, Coordinate Plan, Axis Graph given points in the first quadrant. State the coordinate of graphed points in the first quadrant. Management considerations: Students may be overly excited after returning from specials class. Some students may need to move closer to the board in order to stay focused. Introduction/hook (scripted) Ok today we will begin learning about Coordinate Planes. Everyone say Coordinate Planes. This will be a fun unit and once you get good at graphing (which I know you all will) you will be able to graph and make really fun shapes. BrainPop video on Cartesian Planes via : www.BrainPop.com

Outline of your lesson sequence, including teaching strategies used. 1. Brain Pop Video 2. Terms & Definitions (students take notes) 3. Explanation of graphing in the first quadrant (students take notes) 4. Whole Group Practice (Students come to the board and graph points. Also students identify the coordinates of graphed points. Students who come to the board or answer questions are required to explain how they arrived at their answer). 5. Individual Practice (In groups or alone). 6. Students will take turns using the computers to practice graphing and identifying coordinates. (I I have specified websites for students to use). 7. Wrap Up and Explanation of Homework. What accommodations did you make to meet the full range of your students?
I will define mathematical terms for students.

When students begin to work in groups or independently I will provide an easy and a medium challenge sheet. Students will have the freedom to choose which sheet they would like to complete. (LEARNING DISABLED FOCUS STUDENT) For students who complete both the easy and medium challenge sheets, I will provide a hard challenge sheet. (ADVANCED FOCUS STUDENT) When students are on the computers I will provide three specified websites each labeled as easy, medium or hard. Students may choose which website they would like to practice on.

Assessment: Informal: I will collect student work and the conclusion of the lesson and use it to gage if students understand the concepts and if we may need to revisit concepts. Next steps Next we will move on to graphing in all four quadrants. If being observed: On what aspect(s) of your lesson would you like me to focus? Ability to explain information in a clear, logical and easy to understand way. Ability to engage all students.
