TEACHING EXPERIENCE
BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL (BHS) Berkeley, California The only public comprehensive high school in the city of Berkeley, BHS has an enrollment of approximately 3300 students of diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds who study as part of six distinct learning communities (including Communication Arts and Sciences [CAS] and Berkeley International High School [BIHS]). Student Teacher, CAS Senior Composition/Genre in Literature January-June 2012 Team-taught and co-planned two highly diverse classes. Collaboratively designed and implemented two units: Equity and Education and Models of Justice: Restorative vs. Retributive. Independently selected several texts, created activities and homework assignments, facilitated class discussions, and promoted critical reading and thinking skills. Engaged students in creative writing activities and offered weekly opportunities for students to share their writing with peers. Supported students in semester-long process of researching, drafting, and editing cumulative Senior Thesis manuscripts. Acted as Senior Thesis Advisor to five studentsincluding three English Language Learners (ELLs)and offered them individual support in honing their research questions, finding reliable and valuable sources, analyzing expository texts, and properly applying MLA style guidelines, etc. Fostered personal relationships with students and maintained high expectations of their academic and personal behavior. Co-led Open House Night and connected with parents. Communicated frequently with parents of one student in particular, including conducting a visit to their home. Student Teacher, BIHS Junior International Baccalaureate (IB) English September-December 2011 Assumed full responsibility of one class for fifteen weeks. Assumed full responsibility of additional class for three weeks. Differentiated class work, homework, and instruction to support a diverse range of students, including ELLs and students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Collaboratively designed and implemented six-week unit on Tim OBriens The Things They Carried. Independently designed and implemented eight-week unit on Nora Okja Kellers Fox Girl, a controversial novel that addressed several thematic concerns: youth and identity; the intersections between race, class, and gender; violence and war. Taught multiple reading annotation strategies to increase students interactions with text. Offered varied and non-conventional reading and writing assignments that drew on students life experiences. Engaged students in weekly vocabulary lessons and review activities in preparation for the SAT. Adhered to strict IB standards regarding use of cross-cultural and rigorous curriculum. Prepared students for IB Individual Oral Presentation assessments. Co-led Back to School Night and interacted warmly with parents. Communicated with parent regarding one students disciplinary suspension. Held one-on-one meetings with students outside of class to discuss problematic classroom behavior and/or scaffold assignments to support higher achievement. 1

MISSION HOUSING DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION San Francisco, California Mission Housing Development Corporation is an affordable housing non-profit located in San Franciscos Mission District. Resident Services Coordinator 2010-2011 Offered bilingual support and enrichment services to low-income residents (primarily youth and families) in the form of community resource referrals, onsite English as a Second Language (ESL) and fitness classes, partnerships with other community-based organizations, and community celebrations. Conducted interviews with multiple prospective employees and singlehandedly created department-wide Resident Services Handbook. CASA DE LA SOLIDARIDAD San Salvador, El Salvador Casa de la Solidaridad is a study abroad program centered around community living, spirituality, simple living, and fostering meaningful relationships between U.S. students and native Salvadorans. Community Coordinator 2009-2010 Mentored students from various U.S. universities in their transition to El Salvador by offering opportunities for them to collectively and individually engage questions of discernment, vocation, and social justice. ESL Instructor Taught ESL part-time to secondary students at Fe y Alegra, a low-income, urban school near downtown San Salvador. DOWNTOWN COLLEGE PREP (DCP) San Jose, California DCP is a charter high school whose mission is to educate their low-achieving, urban minority students to be the first in their families to go to and truly succeed at four-year universities and colleges. Program Coordinator 2008-2009 Coordinated SCU student volunteers to tutor DCP high school students in Homework Center after school. Planned and organized new collaborative projects, including a weekly writing workshop in which SCU students fostered creativity and pride in DCP students writing. Homework Center Tutor 2005-2008 Helped struggling students build study skills, understand homework assignments, prepare for tests, draft and revise writing assignments, and appropriately prioritize academic tasks.
