In most plays (especially Shakespearean), soliloquies are used to illuminate a characters inner thoughts to the audience. We have read a number of soliloquies in Hamlet, most notably, O, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt and To be or not to be, that is the question. Your job is to assume the identity of a character from Hamlet other than Hamlet. Your character should be conflicted about something that is going on at a specific point in the play (select a specific event for the character to react to). Write a soliloquy that illuminates the characters thoughts, feelings, plans, and motives regarding this scene. For instance, if this assignment were for Romeo and Juliet, you could write a soliloquy from Mercutios perspective about Romeo and Juliets upcoming wedding. Requirements:

Length: 25 40 lines of blank verse (unrhymed iambic pentameter) Include o Antithesis (at least three examples) (this will help demonstrate the inner conflict) o Extended metaphor (at least one example) o Alliteration or assonance (at least three separate examplesthe sound must be repeated at least three times in close proximity to count as alliteration or assonance) Stay true to your character Use Shakespearean language to the best of your ability o No, I dont expect you to master Shakespearean dialect overnight (Of course, if you want to.) o You should, however, make some effort, such as: avoiding contemporary slang, using blank verse, and attempting to pick up on some of the Shakespearean words youve seen this character (or others) use.
