Description: The chief nurse is an administrative position at a hospital or any medical center. Registered nurses advance to this position after proving great responsibility and providing excellent service. Generally, a chief nurse is responsible for mentoring and supervising the entire nursing staff. Essential Functions: 1. Carries full administrative responsibility and authority for the entire nursing service of the hospital; 2. Participates in formulating hospital policies, in developing and

evaluating programs and services; 3. Assumes full authority and responsibility for development of nursing service policies; 4. Organizes, directs, coordinates, evaluates activities of the Nursing Service Staff which allow for satisfaction and profession growth; 5. Provides means and methods by which nursing personnel can interpret the goals and policies of hospital and nursing service to the patient and to the public; 6. Initiates and directs studies, evaluates procedures for the

improvement of nursing in relation to the total care of patients; 7. Directs planning and implementation of staff development programs for different categories of nursing personnel;

8. Directs nursing personnel in functions related to the clinical training program of nursing students and other affiliates; 9. Prepares with her supervisory staff budget proposal for the nursing personnel; 10. Defines job description for each category of nursing personnel; 11. Recruits and recommends personnel for appointment, promotion or dismissal depending on staffing needs of the services.

Specific and actual functions and activities 1. Plans, organizes and supervises the nursing service in order to provide adequate nursing care to patients. 2. Coordinates all activities of the nursing service department with other services. 3. Prepares nursing service budget to provide adequate personnel, equipment and physical facilities needed and submits to Administrative office. 4. Interviews and screen all applicants for the nursing service and evaluates their qualifications and experiences. 5. Observes and evaluates the performance of personnel, as well as analyzes and evaluates the nursing activities to determine whether they are meeting desired standards.

Formulates and recommended policies for improvement of patient care, participates in planning of personnel policies, and interprets to the Chief of Hospital the needs and interests of the nursing personnel. 7. Promotes individual growth by maintaining a program of staff education; conducts monthly meetings of nurses and nursing aids. 8. Promotes and maintains cordial relationship with patients, their families and the community and provides opportunities for nursing staff to work with other groups so that the aims of the hospital can be interpreted to mean good interpersonal and interdepartmental

relationships. 9. Participates in the hospitals outreach program. 10. Participates in professional meetings as the representative of the nursing service personnel, and provides for healthful living conditions of nursing personnel. 11. Subject to call as the need arises. 12. Daily ward rounds. To gain an insight to the problems and needs as presented by the patient and the family, the nurses and other health disciplines. 13. Supervision: This position receives direction and supervision from the Hospital Director. Education and Experiences: Bachelors Degree in Nursing. Preferred: Masters Degree in Nursing or related field. Experience in clinical and administrative practice. Five years experience in health care management and in the practice of nursing in a clinically complex tertiary care center. Working knowledge of Quality Improvement Process and Joint Commission standards. Others may also require an additional degree related to management. Skills, Characteristics, Personalities: A chief nurse must possess strong communication skills, patience, and self-confidence. This trait is critical to work effectively with clinical and administrative staff. He/She should have the makings of a leader and display strong leadership skills and commitment to service improvement in all departments.

The ideal chief nurse should have a sense of urgency and presence of mind to act on emergency situations and resolve them rationally. He/She should be knowledgeable in his profession and must be familiar with every aspect of health care in various departments. They allocate duties and evaluate the performance of other nurses. They also train any newly hired nurses. Head nurses also work directly with patients. They ensure that patients' conditions remain stable and that doctors' treatment instructions have been properly carried out. Essential Functions: 1. Makes patient rounds and sees to it that all patients in her ward get the necessary care. 2. Sees to it that all equipment are in order and properly kept and supplies are available. 3. Makes weekly schedule and daily assignment of her staff. 4. Checks and countersigns recording done by staff nurses.

5. Assists the clinical instructor, prepares the students assignments for their clinical experiences and assists in the evaluation of their performance. 6. Observes sign and symptoms, institute remedial action when

appropriate and records in chart. 10. Reports observation to the physician. 11. Observes and responds to patients emotional and spiritual needs. 12. Acts as a liaison between patients and hospital personnel. 13. Interprets to the patient and his family their roles in promoting successful therapy and rehabilitation. 14.
