PREFACE In order to become a Chartered Engineer you must show that you have undertaken two phases of qualification:

an accredited engineering degree, at least four years of training experience leading to a professional level of responsibility. You can overlap these phases by no more than 18 months. At Imperial College, an industrial training period may be spent with a company, either as a deferred year before joining the course or a sandwich year later in the course. In addition any appropriate work during summer vacations may also be counted up to the maximum total of eighteen months. In Mechanical Engineering training may be recorded through the Monitored Professional Development Scheme logbook, provided by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. A period in industry will provide you with numerous opportunities to develop your personal capabilities, to explore some of the aspects of engineering as a future career, and to find out what it is like to work for an organization with fellow engineers. There are several immediate benefits: An opportunity to gain useful professional experience, and assess your interest and aspirations as a possible long-term employee of the company or in the same industry. An opportunity to mature by living in a more adult world. An early awareness of business activities essential to todays professional engineer. A survey, carried out a few years ago at Imperial College, showed that mechanical engineering graduates, who had taken a year of industrial training, consistently achieved a higher classification of honours degree than those who had not. The industrial experience gives you a number of other advantages when you are at university: Money in your pocket and a good chance of sponsorship until you graduate. A better understanding of lecture material especially when dealing with the more practical elements of the course. Practical experience gained is of particular value to you in design study classes and in individual projects. Students more readily appreciate the interaction between analysis and synthesis and understand the need to consider the importance of manufacturing capability, time, costing and marketing of products, etc. A source of company supported industry based projects for the later years of the course. A period of Professional Development to show on your C.V. The company benefits as well Companies find that the combination of practical training and academic study leads to well rounded graduates as potential recruits, who are already familiar with their products and operations. Firms are attracted by the early recruitment of students of high academic calibre. The company can assess, over a lengthy period, your suitability for possible longer-term employment, following graduation and find the most suitable post for your particular abilities. On graduation, the majority of your training will have been completed enabling you to take up a first appointment earlier than would otherwise have been possible. The fulfillment of a general obligation to help in the training of young professional engineers.

Industrial training periods and your 'mentor' Whilst in industry you should carry out a training programme in accordance with the requirements of the relevant Professional Engineering Institution. This will include a period of General Training carried out either within the company or by secondment, perhaps to a college, which specializes in practical training. There will also be a period of Company Specific Training completed within the organization. Usually, this will involve 'real work', often project based, and totally related to the company's business. You will gain experience over a very wide range of activities depending upon the industry your company is operating in. Typically, you might gain shop floor/manufacturing experience, undertake investigations into production and quality control, safety and reliability, design activities and commercial/business functions. Training programmes will obviously vary according to your needs and that of your employer. As you progress through the year, you will be given greater responsibility according to the increase in technical knowledge gained, and your own personal development. Throughout your training you will have an industrial tutor or Mentor allocated to you. Your Mentor will preferably be a Chartered Engineer, and that person has a very important role to play arranging and monitoring your training programme. If you remain with the company the Mentor may be giving you career development guidance until you become eligible to apply for Chartered Engineer status.

Pre-University Students If you spend a pre-university year in industry, you need to maintain your academic abilities. For example, we strongly recommend all pre-university students to continue studies of pure and applied mathematics since this is an area of study which gets rusty very quickly. Remember that when you do start your course you will be with students who have just finished their A-levels. You can usually attend a local Technical College, on a specially arranged day-release study course, or carry out private academic study modules in your own time.

Sandwich Students If you follow a 2-1-2 course and thereby spend your third year in industry you should also carry out some academic studies in your own time. You will be encouraged to do some pre-reading of topics and to choose any optional courses, which you are likely to study in your fourth year on your return to university. You should also be collecting data relating to any forthcoming individual degree project related to your firm's activities. Visiting Staff We will ensure that an academic tutor (a staff member from the College or a more locally based engineering colleague) will visit you at your place of work, several times during the industrial training periods. The academic tutor will give advice, liaise with you and your industrial mentor and generally help to ensure that a good working relationship exists between you, the University engineering department, your company and your relevant Professional Institution. Introduction to this booklet

Candidates who wish to seek an industrial placement to complement an engineering degree course programme at Imperial College will note from the College Prospectus or the Departmental brochures that there are several possible options. These depend upon the individual choice of the student and realistically, the availability of industrial places. With this in mind Admission Tutors and the staff who operate the programmes will help candidates to gain a placement, although success cannot be guaranteed. Students with an industrial placement may be able to enroll on either our, 1-4-1 or 2-1-2 programmes details of which are contained in the relevant Departmental brochures. Candidates who are unable to gain a placement straight from school will receive assistance from College staff during their degree course, when endeavouring to obtain industrial training during their first and/or second long summer vacations or when hoping to take a full year out. Then, at that latter stage they could, hopefully, gain an industrial sponsorship with a bursary for the duration of their chosen engineering course. This booklet contains names and address of companies who have regularly taken students in the past and to whom we recommend you should apply. The majority of these companies offer some sponsorships to students for the remainder of their course. These addresses are given in alphabetical order and annotated according to each firm's preference for a particular programme and degree discipline.

The Year-in Industry Scheme As well as the companies listed here, a number of students, who take a deferred year, find their placements through the Year-in-Industry scheme. This YiI scheme finds industrial placements for hundreds of students from various disciplines every year, often near to your own home. The scheme has its own visiting staff so only two College visits are usually made. For further details of the scheme and an application form contact your local regional office whose address is listed near the end of this booklet.

Engineering Careers Foundation Year - The Smallpeice Trust An alternative to a year with a company, for deferred year students, is to take a training course. One which is specifically aimed at prospective engineering students is the Engineering Gap Year run by the Smallpeice Trust. The course begins in September and includes an academic introduction to basic engineering skills, foreign language teaching and a three-month placement with a company in one of ten European countries. It is a broad based course covering electrical, civil and mechanical engineering. As such it might be particularly useful for students who are not sure which branch of the profession to go into. It can partially count towards your professional training requirements and includes workshop practice. It lasts about seven months and (at the time of writing) costs 25 per week, mainly as a contribution towards accommodation etc. Three students each year are selected to receive 1000 support for the first three years of their degree course. For further information contact The Smallpeice Trust, 74 Upper Holly Walk, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire CV32 4JL; ring 01926 333200; check the Internet site: http://www.smallpeicetrust.org.uk

Company Listing This is a listing of contact names and addresses for companies who regularly offer placements to students, either as deferred years, before your course begins, or as sandwich years, part-way through the course. They are coded as follows: A. Support a PRE-UNIVERSITY year of industrial training and WILL CONSIDER APPPLICATIONS BEFORE THE COURSE BEGINS from students applying to join undergraduate courses. These companies will often offer sponsorship throughout the course.

B. Support a SANDWICH year part-way through the course and WILL CONSIDER APPLICATIONS BEFORE THE COURSE BEGINS from students applying to join undergraduate courses offering some form of sponsorship throughout the course.

C. Support a SANDWICH year part-way through the course and WILL CONSIDER APPLICATIONS FROM SECOND YEAR STUDENTS. These companies usually offer some form of sponsorship for the rest of the course.

NOTES: Sponsorship is not guaranteed from any particular placement and may well depend on performance during the year with the company. This varies from company to company and with any changes in recruitment policy or the economic situation of the company. The information contained in these listings is supplied by the companies at the time of printing and should be checked with the companies concerned at the time of application or interview. Where possible look at the companies websites as a useful introduction to the type of work they undertake. The number of places available at any company varies considerably and may be taken up by students from many sources. You are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Many of the companies have websites which they feel give a useful introduction to their work. The preferred mode for applications is stated in small letters next to the companys name: (a) Online Applications (b) Standard Application Forms (c) Company Application Form
