GENDER DISCRIMINATION AT WORK PLACE AN OBSTACLE IN ORGANISATION DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT
Gender inequality is an acute and persistent problem, especially in developing countries.This paper suggests that gender discrimination is an ineffective practice.While our culture has made progress against sexism over the past few decades, the sad truth is that sexism and sexual discrimination still exist.It has been widely reported that women have a harder time getting higher position of authority at work.Gender Discrimination, in the workplace can occur in many ways.It may happen during the hiring process, when men are hired instead of women with equal abilities and experience .But on the contrary, it is believed that women get jobs much easily than men. When you are treated differently because of your sex and when different treatment negatively affects the terms or conditions of employment, it is illegal.Terms and conditions of employment include position, pay, title, being hired or fired from a job and advancement and training opportunities.

1. INTRODUCTION
Gender Discrimination refers to the practice of granting or denying rights or privileges to a person based on their gender. In some societies, this practice is longstanding and acceptable to both genders. Certain religious groups embrace gender discrimination as part of their dogma. However, in most industrialized nations, it is either illegal or generally considered inappropriate.

2. TYPES OF GENDER DISCRIMINATION


There are discrimination two main categories of Gender

Disparate Treatment Disparate Impact The first category Disparate Treatment, is simply treating an employee differently (disparately) because of her or his gender. Whereas, Disparate Impact is a more complex concept .It regards company policies or practices that exclude person of one gender from a job or from promotions although the policy or practice was not designed to do so.

Discrimination at work can come from either the employer from the colleague side, discrimination by colleagues can happen to new employees. They may face sarcastic stares or constant digs made at them by their colleagues during initial weeks. However, if it persists for a long time, it can affect not only the employee but also the employer. An employee who is being discriminated witness non co-operation from peers and negative feedbacks from subordinates. Discrimination leads to psychological and emotional disturbance, resulting in demoralization and descend in performance standards. It brings down the overall performance. Discrimination at workplace also affects the society. The socio-economic inequalities get widened and social cohension and solidarity are eroded. It results in wastage of human talent and resources. The main indicator which indicates that gender discrimination has occupied in the hiring process involves the qualifications of the job applicants.

3. EXAMPLES OF GENDER DISCRIMINATION AT WORK


An employee may be discriminated by being asked discriminatory questions during a job interview.
