This experiment is carried out to study the effects of insulin on blood glucose levels in rats (in vivo).

The rat is injected with insulin and the concentration of glucose in plasma before and after injection is measured. The result then is compared to determine the effect of insulin on blood glucose concentration. Theoretically, the blood glucose level in rat injected with insulin will reduce due to the effect of insulin to body metabolism. Based on the experiment, glucose level in the blood of insulin treated rat is 100.1 mg/100mL and after the injection of insulin the glucose level is decrease to 42.4 mg/100mL. It is a result for our group. While for the average class group result, the glucose level in the tested rat before injection of insulin is 80.9 mg/100ml and the blood glucose level decrease to 45/6 mg/100ml after the injection of insulin. Both individual group and average class group obtained the result that follow the theory as both shows decreasing of initial glucose concentration in plasma after insulin injection. Muscle and liver start to take in glucose and store it in the form of glycogen based on the effect of insulin. Hence, it is causing fat cells to take in blood lipids and turn them into triglycerides. The difference in glucose level between our group result and average group result shown are slightly different. This is due to the ability to reduce glucose level in plasma depends on several factors such as the metabolism rates in rats and the weight of the rats. In addition, the results also may be affected by the wrong dose calculated. Saline has no effect on metabolism, thus it should be no or only slightly different in glucose level in plasma before and after injection of saline in control rat. The average class results shows a slightly increase in blood glucose concentration. This should be acceptable because other external factor that can be negligible. Whereas, our group result show there is significantly decrease of glucose concentration in plasma. We had to repeat experiment for the control rat because of our careless in handling the centrifuged process. The increment of the glucose level may be due to the error occurring while centrifuge the blood plasma and when the concentration of the glucose is being determined using spectrometer. Insulin-injected rats showed more decrease in their blood as insulin converts sugar into glycogen. Saline-injected showed low percentage of decrease as the saline will only make the blood more dilute, decreasing the concentration of the blood.
