Lesson Description of Classroom: This lesson plan is intended for 5th grade; age range: 10-11; small group of 4; 2 boys and 2 girls. Background: This is a guided word study lesson focusing on homophones. Content Objectives: 1. As a small group, we will discuss what homophones are. 2. Teacher will read Dear Deer: A book of Homophones by Gene Barretta to aide in students comprehension of homophones. 3. Given the materials, students will sort words into appropriate categories using their understanding and explain their reasonings. Language Objectives: Speaking: small group discussion, sharing Listening: teacher guidance, peer ideas, and story Reading: childrens literature Nevada Standards: L.5.5. Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. L.5.5.c. Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., synonyms, antonyms, homographs) to better understand each of the words. Teaching Strategy: Childrens Literature Small Group Discussion Word Sort Game Warm-Up Activity: 1. Teacher will read, Dear Deer: A book of Homophones by Gene Barretta. 2. Small group discussion: What do we notice about the words in this book? What about these words looks/sounds the same/different? Is there a word to describe the words used to tell the story?

Lesson Sequence: 1. Teacher will provide game instructions for Word Sort Game: Homophone Rummy 2. How to Play: Theres 26 Pairs of Homophones. Players are dealt 7 cards; they begin by checking for pairs in their hand. If players have a pair they place the two cards in front of them and provide a meaning for each homophone word (Example: Ant and Aunt- Ant is an insect, and Aunt is the sister to one of your parents). The remaining cards from the deck are placed in the center with one card beside it facing up as the discard pile. The person at the left of the dealer pulls from the deck first. Each player draws from the deck or the discard pile to form their pair of homophones. The game is over when a player has no more cards left. Closure Activity: 1. Teacher will summarize the lesson. 2. Students will provide a sentence for their homophones. Supplementary Materials: Dear Deer: A book of Homophones by Gene Barretta 52 Index Cards with 26 pairs of homophones on them Accommodations: Teacher will provide extra guidance wherever it is needed.
