Adopted as a standard of tbe American Concrete Institute (October 27, 2004), the Strctural Engineering Institue of the American Society of Civil Engineers December 15,2004, and The Masonr Society (December 20,2004) to supersede tbe 2002 edition in accordance with each organization's standardization procedures. The standard was originally adopted by the American Concrete Institute in November, 1988, the American Society of Civil Engineers in August, 1989, and The Masonr Society in July, 1992.
SI equivalents shown in tbis document are calculated conversions. Equations are based on U.S. Customary (inch-pound) Units; SI equivalents for equations are listed at the end of tbe Code.

MINIMUM TESTS AND SUBMITTALS

Certificates for materials used in masonry construction indicating compliance with the Contract Documents
Verification off'm orf'AAC in accordance with Article

MINIMUM INSPECTION
From the beginning of masonry construction and continuously during construction of masonry:
a) verify that the following are in compliance:
. proportions of site-mixed mortar, grout, and

104 B:

prestressing grout for bonded tendons

. grade and size of reinforcement, and prestressing

. prior to constrction
. every 5000 sq. ft (464.5 m2) during construction

tendons and anchorages . placement of masonr units and construction of

mortar joints

Verification of proportions of materials in premixed or preblended mortar, grout, and prestressing grout as delivered to the site

. placement of reinforcement, connectors, and

prestressing tendons and anchorages

. grout space prior to grouting

. placement of grout and prestressing grout for

bonded tendons
b) Observe preparation of grout specimens, mortar

specimens, and/or prisms

c) Verify compliance with the required inspection

provisions of the contract documents and the

approved submittals

1.7 - Delivery, storage, and handling

1. 7 A. Do not use damaged masonr units, damaged
components of strctue, or damaged packaged materiaL.

a. Do not lay masonr units having either a

temperature below 20F (-6.7C) or

containing frozen moistue, visible ice, or

snow on their surace.

1.7 B. Protect cementitious materials for mortar and

grout from precipitation and groundwater.

b. Remove visible ice and snow from the top

surface of existing foundations and masonr

1.7 C. Do not use masonr materials that are

contaminated.

to receive new construction. Heat these

surfaces above freezing, using methods that
do not result in damage. 3. Construction - These requirements apply to work

1.7 D. Store different aggregates separately.

1.7 E. Protect reinforcement, ties, and metal

accessories from permanent distortions and store them
off the ground.
1.8 - Project conditions

in progress and are based on ambient air

temperatue. Do not heat water or aggregates used in mortar or grout above 140 F (60 C) Comply
with the following requirements during

1.8 A. Construction loads Do not apply

construction loads that exceed the safe superimposed

construction durng the following ambient air

conditions:
a. 40F to 32F (404C to OC): Heat sand or

load-carring capacity of the masonr and shores, if

used.

mixing water to produce mortar temperatue

between 40F (404C) and 120F (48.9C) at
the time of mixing. Grout does not require

1.8 B. Masonry protection - Cover top of unfinished

masonr work to protect it from the weather.

1.8 C. Cold weather construction - When ambient air
temperature is below 40F (404C), implement cold

heated materials, unless the temperature of

the materials is below 32F (OC).
b. 32F to 25F (OC to -3.9C): Heat sand and
mixing water to produce mortar temperature

weather procedures and comply with the following: 1. Do not lay glass unit masonr.

2.Preparation - Comply with the following

requirements prior to conducting masonr work:

between 40F (404C) and 120F (48.9C) at the time of mixing. Maintain mortar

temperature above freezing until used in

masonr. Heat grout aggregates and mixing

1.8 D Hot weather construction - Implement approved hot weather procedures and comply with the following
prov1slOns:
1. Preparation - Prior to conducting masonry

of mixing. Maintain grout temperature above

70F (21.1 0C) at the time of grout placement.

Heat AAC units to a minimum temperature of

work:
a. When the ambient air temperature exceeds

40F (404C) before installing thin-bed

mortar.
c. 25F to 20F (-3.9C to -6.7C): Comply
with Aricle 1.8 C.3.b and the following:

lOOF (37.8C), or exceeds 90F (32.2C) with

a wind velocity greater than 8 mph (12.9

minimum daily temperatue for grouted

2. Constrction - While masonr work is in

progress:
a. When the ambient air temperature exceeds

masonry and anticipated mean daily

temperature for ungrouted masonr. Protect
completed masonr in the following manner:
a. Maintain the temperature of glass unit

lOOF (37.8C), or exceeds 90F (32.2C) with

a wind velocity greater than 8 mph

(12.9 kmr):
I)Maintain temperature of mortar and grout
