The initial development of C occurred at AT&T Bell Labs between 1969 and 1973; according to Ritchie, the most

creative period occurred in 1972. It was named "C" because its features were derived from an earlier language called "B", which according to Ken Thompson was a stripped-down version of the BCPL programming language. The origin of C is closely tied to the development of the Unix operating system, originally implemented in assembly language on a PDP-7 by Ritchie and Thompson, incorporating several ideas from colleagues. Eventually they decided to port the operating system to a PDP-11. B's inability to take advantage of some of the PDP-11's features, notably byte addressability, led to the development of an early version of C. The original PDP-11 version of the Unix system was developed in assembly language. By 1973, with the addition of struct types, the C language had become powerful enough that most of the Unix kernel was rewritten in C. This was one of the first operating system kernels implemented in a language other than assembly. (Earlier instances include the Multics system (written in PL/I), and MCP (Master Control Program) for the Burroughs B5000 written in ALGOL in 1961.)

Q :- Explain the components of Multi media .

Components of multimedia:1. Text: Any multimedia screen consists of some text. So text is the first step in multimedia. There are many word processors to type the text. Not only typing, we can also edit, format and perform special effects like Word Art, Water Marks, Outline and embossing etc., in a text. 2. Images : A picture is worth 1000 words. That is why pictures are extensively used in multimedia to discuss about the concept. The pictures are eye catching than the running matter and hence make the information to be appealing and attentive. The images can be used besides the matter or can be used as background in the screen. The images can be obtained in multi media from clip art, scanning pictures or from downloads from Internet or compact disks. 3. Graphics :

Graphics represent the messages in a convenient way of expressions in multimedia. The data can be converted into various charts and graphs. The graphics attracts the people easily. Instead of explaining the profit or sales performance in words, the graphics could be used to illustrate and explain about the products in an office. Various types of charts and graphs are available in multimedia to get the attention of viewers. 4. Animations: Let us imagine the flying letters and pictures in the screen. Examples of a Lion in shaping like a man and a man is changing like a famous cine hero etc., are easily attracting even the kids. Many advertisers are using now-a-days animations extensively in the form of films; slides etc. special effects can be made in animation with 2D or 3D dimensions. 5. Audio (sound): The above images, graphics and animations are effortless unless they are accompanied by sound recorder. A small kid can also easily learn A, B, C, D etc., through the sounds in multimedia. Many advertisers and educationists are using sounds effectively in multimedia to explain the concept. For example, a spoken English Learning institute uses sounds in multimedia to express the pronunciation of letters. 6. Music: Melodious music plays an important part in attracting the viewers. Many advertisers are using music to attract the viewers in order to buy the products. 7. Video: Video is the combination of above sound, images, animations etc. a video camera captures images, adds sound and animations and exhibits the same to the viewers. Now days the digital video software packages are extensively used for editing purpose. ********************************************************************

These courses are based on elements on elements of multimedia.

2. Business: In business, multimedia provides a lot of opportunities. a) Power point slides can be made and presented to the members of business. b) Video conferencing can be used for getting good response among the members.

3. Home: At home, multimedia offers a variety of opportunities. a) We can hear music through multimedia. b) We can view video through multimedia. c) Computer games can be played through multi media. 4. Training:

Through simulation process, multimedia offers training to the prospective employees. 5. Web: It is the multimedia that makes the web more attractive.
