Item Scoring Guide

The Y-RSKForm collects brief biographic and background information from adolescent admissions to treatment settings. It includes socio-demographic items (gender, age, race-ethnicity, education, and family status) as well as school, legal, and health status prior to the assessment. In that respect, it serves as the first part of a typical treatment intake assessment (see Joe, Simpson, Greener, & Rowan-Szal, 2004) and provides key linkage indicators for other intake and during-treatment progress assessments using TCU Short Forms or similar instruments. Behavioral status questions provide the option of calculating a general Youth Background Risk Index for use in classifying new clients according to background problems and risk level (see Knight, Flynn, & Simpson, 2008). The recommended scoring guide below should be cautiously interpreted if used for adolescents below age 15, and specialized scoring alternatives may be appropriate for some youth populations. Scoring Instructions for Y-RSKForm (range=10-50; higher scores more negative) 1. Assign selected item response scores of 0 or 3 as specified below: a. If Q6 is answered None or 1-6, assign a score of 3 (otherwise, 0), b. If Q7 is answered On your own or with friend or On the street or no regular place or In jail or detention facility, assign a score of 3 (otherwise, 0), c. If Q8 is answered None, assign a score of 3 (otherwise, 0), d. If Q9 is answered 1-3 months or higher, assign a score of 3 (otherwise, 0), and e. For any Q11-21 items answered Yes, assign it a score of 3 (otherwise, 0). 2. Sum the response scores for these 15 items, yielding a value of 0-45. 3. Re-scale this value by adding 5 (changing its range to 5-50), then replace any score below 10 with a value of 10, now yielding a Background Risk Index score ranging from 10-50. Sources: Joe, G.
