The RPG Group one of India's largest industrial conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai, India. It was founded by R. P. Goenka in 1979, and initially encompassed Phillips Carbon Black, Asian Cables, Agarpara Jute and Murphy India. Currently, RP Goenka retains the title of Chairman Emeritus, while the chairmanship and vice-chairmanship have been assumed by his sons Harsh and Sanjeev Goenka, respectively. Today the RPG Group is involved in diverse sectors of business, including power generation, power transmission, information technology, retail, and entertainment. The group recorded a turnover of INR 11,500 crore (equivalent to INR 115 billion) for scal year 2007.

Since 1863, Spencers has been a part of the Indian retail landscape. At one time, the Spencers Empire stretched from Peshawar to Cochin, from Karachi to Chittagong, spanning the length and width of undivided India. Originally owned by a British gentleman yes, there was a Mr. Spencer (John William Spencer, to be precise) it acquired Indian ownership in the 1960s, and became part of the RPG Group in 1989. Since inception Spencers has been a consumer-centric brand, constantly innovating, pioneering formats, evolving over time but always keeping consumer needs and satisfaction center-stage. Back in 1920, they were the rst grocery chain in India. In 1980, they became the rst supermarket chain, and in 2001, they introduced India to the joys of hypermarket shopping.

FORMATS
Spencer's began operations as a retail chain in the early 90's in Southern India. Stores are largely setup in one of 2 formats. Convenience stores, called Spencers Hypermarkets, called Spencers Hyper In Late October 2009, Spencer's opened its Largest Store in India in the southern Indian city of Bangalore. The store is spread over 75,000 square feet is part of their current expansion plan which involves the opening of 10 stores in the city (3 hypermarkets).

SPENCERS
Spencer's are neighborhood stores that cater to the daily and weekly top-up shopping needs of consumers. Ranging from 1,500 to 15,000 sq. ft. in size, they stock, at minimum, an assortment of fruits and vegetables, food and non-food Fast Moving Consumer Goods, staples and frozen foods. The larger of these stores, having a oor area of more than 10,000 sq ft sometimes oer a selected range of baked, chilled and frozen foods; personal and home care products; baby care; basic apparels and electronics.

SPENCERS HYPER
Spencer's hyper are megastores, which combine a supermarket with a department store. At least 35,000 sq. ft in size, they stock, on average, 70,000 items, giving shoppers fantastic deals across food, fashion, home and entertainment all under one roof.

Foodworld, previously known as Spencer's Daily, is a chain of supermarket stores. It was started in May 1996 as a division of Spencer & Co, a part of the RPG Group. In August 1999 it became a separate company. Currently it operates 73 stores in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Coimbatore & Chennai.

Launched in 2007 RPG Cellucom was the groups failed attempt at entering the multi brand cellphone retail arena. The stores on an area of 2000ft on an independent store format and store in store format failed to attract costumers to justify the business In 2010 the entire chain was sold to Spice Telecom.
